IMAC G5 USB Ports

Are the USB ports on an iMAC G5 PowerPC USB 2.0 and compatible with iPad?

Hi oaktree2
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yes your iMac's USB ports are, but Tiger as indicated by your user info is not iPad compatible.

  • How "windows-ish" is an iMac's USB port?

    Hi there, Mac-cognoscenti --
I'm interested in getting a GPS. My son-in-law showed me a pretty powerful-appearing one by Garmin. But when I asked him how you go about updating its sw or map info, he said they only support PCs (yeccch) as the platform from which you can do this. Naturally I am hoping that they start supporting Mac access as well, and you can be sure that I'll add my voice to that request as soon as I get one.
I believe that it now uses a USB connection between PC (yecccccccchhhh!) and GPS.
I'm planning on getting an iMac soon, and I understand that it can boot into Windows (yecccchhhhhhhhhh!) as well as MacOSX, and that using Parallels I can even run that other OS (q.v.) inside a Mac window.
I'm not looking fwd to this possibility because that will tempt others in my family to stray back into the Bad Old Ways rather than staying on the good side of He Who Provides lifetime tech support for our home LAN (c'est moi). +(Before the advent of Windoze-compatible Macs, I threw out all our Windoze machines and substituted Macs for them... now life is good for me, the tech support service...)+
Question: If I boot the iMac into Windows and run some sort of browser or FTP SW to glom the GPS updates into its filesystem, can anyone predict whether that OS can address the iMac's USB port(s) such that I can successfully D/L those updates into the GPS?

Hi Dan Kalikow: I have a Garmin C330 GPS, not a top of the line unit, but still a Garmin, so the situation is similar. I have Garmin software installed on my Mac, not windoze software, Mac software, and it works fine. I haven't done any map updates, but have done a Garmin software update. It worked flawlessly, as all of the other Mac related software I have used. Check out the Garmin site for more info: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3499 I hope this helps to keep the family from straying back to the "other side"

  • HT204392 Just Made the switch from PC to a 27" iMac. USB Ports full !

After adding my iPhone charger, my Printer, a superdrive and the Bose Companion 5 speakers, my USB ports are full! Any good HUBs out there or other connection solutions? Not sure what the Thunderbolt connections are for, except additional monitors?  Is it possible to adapt those to USB 3.0?
I've been considering the Logitech Keyboard to pick up the numeric keypad but it requires a USB port as does my DSLR. Right now I remove the SD card from the camera, but firmware updates are a pain since I have to reach around the back of the iMac and choose one of the cables to temporarily remove. Not sure what others are doing to silve this problem and I know hubs can be buggy...

There are also USB hubs that will connect to the Thunderbolt port.
This one Thunderbolt™ Express Dock for Mac from Belkin also has a FireWire Port. There are less expensive ones out there search for thunderbolt usb hub

  • The WD My Passport USB3.0 portable external drive fails to recognise on 13" MBP Retina, why when it works off iMac 27" USB port?

Just bought a new WD My Passport Mac compatible drive, USB3.0 cable included.  The drive is not recognised on my 13" Retina at all, on disk utilitiy it comes up as a superdrive.  moved to the 27" iMac, recognised only as superdrive through USB2 hub, connected directly to iMac USB port and disk utility picked up the drive.  Updated all WD driver detail as described in WD manual, partitioned drive and copied data from iMac.  Move drive to connect directly to 13" Retina, and it is not seen anywhere.  Same cable used, smae HDD.
Is this a USB bus issue, power issue or 13" Retina USB i/f configuraiton issue?

Thought this may be the issue, problem is the USB3.0 connector is 2 micro USB side by side in a single plastic moulding, have searched for separate USB cables but cannot find them.

  • New imac doesn't locate old imac hard drive via usb port

I have an old iMac from ~2006 that recently stopped reading the harddrive.  I pulled the HD out and connected it to my new imac via USB port but I can't locate it.  The HD spins/powers up so I know the connector is strong enough to supply power.  We connected it to my husband's PC and he can see that there is a harddrive but cannot see any files to read.  He even tried Catacombe to try to read files but it didn't work.  My first issue is how can I locate my HD on the new mac?  But the main issue is how can I pull data/pictures off of the old harddrive and import them to my new computer.  I don't hear any clicking sounds from the harddrive so it seems to be working.  I can't reformat it because I don't want to lose the pictures on it.  I don't need the old harddrive to work/write.  I just need to pull the information off of it.  TIA.

I was not familiar with catacombae , but now I am .
You have a problem with either a corrupt file system on the hd or a hardware problem with the hd.  I'd say try mounting in disk utility.  Try reparing filesystem on hd.  Try one of the disk repair utilities.  Some have a free trail that let's you know if they can do anything.  You pay to get the data.  Seek profession help.  Pay $$$.

  • How do I send the iPhoto events from my iMac to my iPad when the two devices are connected by USB port?

I connected my iPad to my iMac via USB port.  I want to send my iPhoto events/files to my iPad.  I cannot find the right instructions.  It appears to me that the iPad sync only transmits data from the iPad to the iMac, but I am trying to send iPhotos from the iMac to the iPad.  Do I use export or sync?

You need to use iTunes to sync photos.
Connect your iPad to your computer. Launch iTunes. Select Photos from the menu. Click the Sync button bottom right side of the iTunes window.

  • USB ports have no power

It first started happening on my Late 2012 model iMac 21.5" a couple weeks ago.
What I found was that nothing seemed to work when connected directly to the iMac's USB ports. However, if you attach an externally powered USB hub, then all devices attached to the hub will work. So, it seems as if the USB ports are still working, but without power.
After I was able to get my USB keyboard to work using the powered hub, I was able to zap the PRAM by holding command-option-P-R while powering on, and then magically everything was back to working again. Unfortunately, this was short lived as the problem has resufaced again for me.
Has anyone else seen a problem like this? Do I need to send it back to Apple for warranty repair?

Call AppleCare & tell them exactly what you stated in your post.

  • USB ports seem to be underpowered

    Hello.
I have a Patriot USB flash drive that frequently cannot mount when plugged into my iMac (OS 10.4.11). The drive mounts fine in my Macbook and Dell PC. If I let the drive sit in the port long enough, it sometimes accumulates enough power to work. And this is with all other USB periferals (except keyboard and mouse) unplugged.
And I have other problems with other USB devices, where the devices cannot be seen by the computer because they are not receiving enough USB power.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions, but yes, I have tried all three USB ports, and the behavior is exactly the same.
Also, the drive is properly formated. It works absolutely fine on my Macbook. Never any problems.
I have also had erratic performance with my USB Hub (D-link DUB-H7). And a quick scan of the reviews for this product at Amazon indicates that those with iMacs have erratic performance also, while those using it with other computers seem to have zero problems. Perhaps there is an iMac specific problem that develops (at least with certain iMacs) and USB ports.
I wonder if resetting power management will help?

  • Keep USB ports powered when PC off

    Hi,
I got my first iMac a few days ago and am missing a feature that my PC had. I have a razor mamba wireless mouse that charges in its own dock via USB. I would also like to charge my iPhone 4 from my iMacs USB ports over night. But when I turn off my iMac the USB ports power down, unlike my PC where the USB ports would remain active and charge my mouse over night.
Is there any way I can charge my USB components overnight without leaving the iMac on?

  • EMac to iMac - How do I transfer data when USB ports don't work?

I just bought a new iMac to replace my old eMac and I need to transfer the data from the eMac to the iMac - here's the problem - the USB ports on the eMac aren't working, the devices work fine like keyboard & mouse but the USB ports are dead. I can't hold down any keys as it starts up to make it a fire wire device etc. So how can I do this??
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Why does my nook open iphoto when i plug it in the usb port on the back of my imac running 10.6.8

I have downloaded Adobe Digital Editions and downloaded Overdrive from the public library. When I plug the Nook eReader in the USB port in the back of the iMac, iPhoto opens immediately. I know this is not a forum for Nook eReaders, but I have to start somewhere and figured since iPhoto is opening automatically, maybe someone can give me a clue.
    thank you,

Most likely, because your Mac and iPhoto think that you have connected a camera or mass storage device that has images on it.
Not sure where to go from there, but I would start by looking at the setting in both iPhoto Preferences and Image Capture if I wanted iPhoto to ignore that device.

  • My External HDD is not working on 2 of the 4 USB ports on my iMac. It gets power but it's not reading the HDD.

    Hi,
I have an iMac Late 2013 model. My external HD is accessible only on 2 out of the 4 USB ports at the back. When you plug the HD in all 4, it gets power, but the HD's icon will only load on the desktop if you plug it in one of the 2 ports mentioned earlier. This is my first mac and I'm thinking that I should be able to plug my external HD to any one of those ports, right?
If this isn't normal mac behavior, how do it fix it?
    Thanks!

  • I have used all the usb ports on the back of my iMac desktop [2009] - in one I have a hub - too many?

The longer I have had my 2009 desktop iMac, the more I am needing usb ports.  I only have 3 on the back.  Currently 2 are used for the 2 printers I own and the other has a 3 branch hub in it for my mouse, keyboard and card reader.  I have the mouse and keyboard attached this way as the cords work better for me in my workspace.  I am using one of the ports on my keyboard for my mp3 player.  Now I am branching out into the computer world and have tried using a flash drive.  However when I tried plugging it into the other usb port on my keyboard, I get the message that there isn't enough power to support it.  Same message when I tried one of the three ports in my hub.  So the only way I could get my flashdrive to work was to unplug a printer, plug in the flash drive till I was done with it and then plug in the printer again.  Since I am sure that this plugging and unplugging constantly would not be a good thing, I am now contemplating getting a better hub so I could permanently have a usb hub open for my flash drive.  I figure I can always use a port on my keyboard for my card reader as I don't use that very often.  My question is: "If I do get a better hub to put on my 3rd port on the back of the computer, will that be too much for the poor thing?"

Generally, you should use hubs (of which the keyboard is one) for devices which don't need to get their power from the USB port ("bus-powered"). Portable drives (including flash drives) are bus-powered; printers and other larger devices which have separate power cables are not. So the printers should attach to your hub, and small devices should connect directly to the Mac.
Now, some hubs are actually powered themselves, and these are better suited for powering small devices.
There are some good options here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/usb+hub
Are both your printers USB-only, or can they be networked (either wired or wirelessly)? That would save you some ports.
