IMac G5 vs PowerMac G5

I currently own a dual 2GHz PowerMac G5. I'm still paying it off (darn you MBNA) and am thinking of selling it and switching to a iMac G5. I would be using the computer for every day activities as well as editing with Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD.
Will there a noticeable speed difference? It is my understanding that Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD doesn't utilize both CPU's so I don't see how there will be much of a speed difference.
The main reason I'm interested in the switch is to reduce my debt.
Thoughts? (regarding the two computers, not my debt.

Hello Marc Buhmann,
Your decision should clearly depend on how much use your getting out of FCP-HD and what type of production your involved in. Home movie(s), either Mac.
If your producing long DV, rendering etc will be signifgantly longer and may slow the single G5 to a slow crawl.
It also depends on the amount of RAM your system can use and if your using external HD's for the process.
But to make this simple, Glorfindeal was spot on.

  • Booting an iMac from a PowerMac??

I have an old PowerMac G4 and a newer, intel-based iMac. No monitor for the G4.
Just was wondering, is it possible to boot an iMac from a PowerMac?

It may be possible, but the following IF conditions must be met.
    1. The Power Mac G4 is capable of starting up in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    2. The startup disk on the Power Mac G4 has Leopard. Leopard is universal. Tiger has separate PowerPC and Intel builds. You won't be able to start up an Intel Mac with PowerPC Tiger.
    3. The startup drive in the Power Mac G4 is the set to master, if it is on an IDE bus that has two drives (as master/slave). FireWire Target Disk Mode will only allow access to the drive set to master.
    4. The Power Mac G4 is able to start up (normally or in target mode) with no display connected.
If you can do 1-4, connect the Power Mac G4 (in target mode) to the iMac. On the iMac, select the Power Mac's hard drive as the startup disk in System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. Restart the iMac.
For point #4, if the Power Mac G4 is able to start up normally with no display connected, and it has at least Tiger as the OS, please post back. I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve, but there may be a better solution using the screen-sharing feature.

  • IMac G5 or Powermac for Graphic Design Industry?

I was wondering what kind of computer does the Graphic Design industry uses? iMac G5 or the Powermac? What do you recommend?
I heard that the Powermac is usually used by professionals. Is this true? How does the iMac G5 compare to it?
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi Angela...
As a design professional I can definitively say if you're working in the design industry with profesional applications such as Quark, Photoshop, etc., your only choice is a PowerMac. iMac's are consumer grade computers, and while quite elegant, and powerful, they are not up to the rigors needed in a professional work situation. Any of the newer PowerMacs will work, but IMO it's always best to buy the best you can afford. If you're working for a company, they should be able to buy top end for you, as it's a depreciable item that can be written-off as a company expense. Anything less and you're literally wasting your time, and the companies time, waiting for the computer to re-draw your screen or finish the task.
    good luck...

  • Connecting iMac 24 to PowerMac G5

I would like to know the best way to connect an iMac 24, model A1225 to a PowerMac G5 in order to share files between these two computers. As simple as this seems, my searches turn up very little that I can trust.
The OS on the G5 is OSX 10.3.9 which allows me to run Classic there.

If they are both connected to your internet connection, then you should just need to turn on sharing in the System Preferences.
In the Finder go to Help menu/Mac Help/Index/S/Sharing files and you can read all about configuring your Macs for file sharing.

I'm also going to upgrade the ram on the machine that I get so what one is the easiest to do the upgrade also can you upgrade the graphics/video card on them?
No video upgrades on the iMac, RAM upgrades are easy on both, but Mac compatible RAM is essential.

  • Will new iMac beat old Powermac???

I've had my powermac dual G5 1.8 since 2004 and am thinking of uprading to a new high-end intel-iMac with leopard.
My main reasons are that my Mac has become really sluggish of late especially with multiple application open and viewing video.
I mostly use my computer for photoshop, watching video and the internet.
I have 512MB ram and a dual 1.8GHZ CPU, the new imac i''m interested in is a 2.8GHZ dual core processor and 2GB RAM, will this give me enough power and performance to not have the beachball all the time when running multiple applications or is a powermac, even an old one, still a faster machine that an iMac??
also does dual 1.8ghz mean two 1.8ghx chips or 1.8 in total, because it it's 2 1.8ghz chips then wouldn't that still be faster (combined) than the new iMac, i'm confused???

That's the problem. That is not much over the minimum RAM required for Tiger. You should have at least 2GB RAM. Also, be sure there is plenty of space on your hard drive.

You have two 1.8 GHz processors. The Intel iMac also has two processors, but they are on one chip. Each processor is 2.0 to 2.8 GHz, depending on which model iMac you get. You should get it with 4 GB RAM.

  • Switching from iMac G4 to Powermac G4

    Hi all,
I am switching my main machine from an iMac G4 1.25 to a Powermac G4 MDD Dual 1.25. I wanted to get some advice on the fastest and most effective way to switch. I was thinking either to take out the hard drive in the iMac and install it into the PM G4 or maybe use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the iMac hard drive to the PM G4 hard drive. If I do it any of those ways, will the Powermac boot up OK, being that the drive is from the iMac? I want to keep all of my programs and settings intact and avoid having to reinstall anything. Thanks for any advice you have.

    What about Migration Assistant?

  • Connecting iMac G5 to PowerMac G4?

Hi if anyone can help on this, it would be great.
I have a intel based version iMac g5 and just bought a G4 (not sure why, ebay etc)
I know you can use the PowerMac G5 as a node so you can use its processor power for certain tasks (eg music production in Logic).
But can you do it with the G4 PowerMac? if so how?
    kind regards.
    wilson

No offense taken. I was too sleepy when I wrote that.
There's a Cat5e outlet in my living room. AppleTV doesn't recognize it. It's as if it's not plugged in at all, and defaults to wireless connection telling me I need to insert an ethernet cable to use ethernet. Until 2 weeks ago it worked fine. I was on vacation and so did nothing myself to alter the setup. There were no power outages either.
I tested the patch cable (ATV-wall) and then the patch cable by the router (patch bay-gigabit switch) by replacing them one at at time. No change.
I tested the setup as a whole by connecting an iBook and an iMac G4, both with Airport switched off. The iBook works fine. The iMac does not. (In my first post I said that fast ethernet worked but gigabit ethernet did not, but I've just realized that the iMac is not gigabit ethernet.)
The gigabit switch by the router has link indicator LEDs: 1 light for a fast ethernet connection, 2 for gigabit ethernet, 0 for no connection. With the iBook there's 1 LED, with the ATV there is 0.
Finally, the ATV itself is definitely not broken. I verified this by connecting it to my bedroom TV with another outlet. It worked fine.
I suppose there's a problem with the network cables or hardware, but these odd inconsistencies are confusing me and I don't know where or how to start troubleshooting.

  • Is an Intel iMac faster than PowerMac G4 1.25 Ghz single proccesor?

Hi, I'm owner of a PowerMac G4 1.25 Ghz single proccesor, working whit Adobe Creative Suite 1. I'm wonderin if the iMac Intel Core Duo is faster than my PowerMac G4? Thanks for your support.

I have a 1.25 G4 Mac Mini and the new intel Mac. The answer to your question is that the iMac will be loads faster for anything that is a native Universal Binary like iLife programs. It will also be faster for games that are not the latest thing, but that are accelerated by its fairly beefy 3d card - so faster for Halo, Call of Duty - Unreal Tournamaent1 etc. (other Unreal tournaments not good under Rosetta - but 2004 now has a UB so that should whizz when you download the patch, if you are into such things).
However it will be slower for power applications running under Rosetta - ie: Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Until the Universal Binary versions come - then it will be much faster for those too.

  • Question:  Run a business on an iMac G5 or PowerMac?

I'm in the process of starting a small business. I anticipate utilizing one iMac G5 up front for scheduling applications and light office work. On the back end, I'm debating whether to get an iMac G5 or a "cheap" PowerMac G5. I know the iMac can handle the demands placed on it, but my concern is reliability.
I would welcome any input regarding whether an iMac G5 is up to the task of running an accounting application, a scheduling application, MS Office apps, and a video surveillance app. My main concern is reliability. Anyone with experience in this arena?

    CDMacHead,
    Short Answer:
iMac (20-inch, 2GHz) + AppleCare + 2 GB of RAM (from someone less expensive than Apple) + two (2)FireWire external drives for backup.
    Longer Answer:
    1. Consumer Reports recommends that people purchase extended warranties for laptops. The iMac is effectively a laptop and is very expensive to repair. You can buy AppleCare at a discount from such stores as: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/ or http://www.smalldog.com/
    2. The iMac will cost a lot less than a PowerMac. I own both and the decision was easy for buying the iMac. The only reason I have a PowerMac is that we already owned the Apple 20-inch display. Also, the cheapest PowerMac is a used machine (eBay) and then you risk that it is out of warranty or getting one with problems. I bought mine on eBay and it was a brand new Single Processor 1.8 GHz whcih turns out to have lots of sleeping/freezing problems.
    3. Maximize the RAM (memory) because Mac OS X loves memory and it is not that expensive.
    4. Two (2) external FireWire drives. Why two? Because only one is ever in you place of business at any given instant in time. You back up at the end of the business day to drive A and take it home. The next morning, you bring in drive B and back up to it that evening. This way, if a disaster occurs, you will have all your data (up through yesterday) on a drive in a safe place. Yes, it will cost you $250-$400 for the extra drive. But, calculate the cost of resuming your business without that data.

P.S. Good luck with your new business venture.

    Bienvenido/a

  • Can my i use my powermac as my iMac

hi i have recently tryed out target display and target disk mode with my old powermac g5 dual 2GHZ/500GB x2/6GB ram/120GB Samsung SSD
and my new desktop a imac early 2009 1TB/4gb/24" lcd and a samsung 120GB SSD . so i want to plug the powermac into the imac with a firewire 800 cable and i want to put my imac 24" into target boot disk mode and boot my imac off my powermac G5 so i can use all the usb/firewire/pci cards/and audio ports Can i do something like this and if so will i be abule to use the video card on my powermac g5

No. Target disk mode only exposes the hard drive of a target machine, it doesn't give you access to peripherals in that way. Also, you won't be able to boot one computer from the other's drive since the G5 and your iMac have very different systems.

  • Surround sound on imac

I have never heard of any surround support on any mac whatsoever. Is there a chance the new imac will have surround sound? Id expect apple to have come out wtih something like this since a majority of their products are sound and music based.

Actually all the iMac G5s and PowerMac G5s have surround sound support on their DVD Players. You need a Toslink minijack connector which ships with the AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit with Monster Cables
, and that will plug into many 5.1 speaker systems like the Logitech Z-680 (which I have).
Edit: I corrected the Logitech Model after looking it up again.

  • Aperature on iMac 20" iSight

Has anyone loaded the new Aperature program on a 20" iMac? I am interested in this product but would like to know if it runs quickly on the iMac, or really needs the power of the PowerMac G5.
    Thanks,
    Kayjh
    iMac iSight 20, 1.5Gb RAM | iPod Video 60GB White   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

It says: "Aperature can be installed on this computer". The minimum system requirements on the Aperature page confirm that the minimum requirement is an iMac, but a Powermac is recommended. The question is, how quickly will it run on an iMac? I guess we'll have to wait until someone tries. Too bad you can't download a demo version like you can with Adobe Photoshop CS. It would make a purchase decision that much easier.
I'm really enjoying my new iMac (my first mac), so I'll learn the rope on this one and wait until the switch to Intel is complete and the bugs are worked out and then add a Powermac to my home network (probably) in a year or so from now and toss out the PC I use for a second computer.

  • IMac connected to a Windows 2003 Server: Authentication Issue

Hi. I was wondering if anyone in the community might have found a solution for this problem or could offer suggestions.
In our in-house corporate graphics department we are connecting three recently purchased iMacs to a Windows Server 2003 file server. We copy files over to the network to share with one another and for backup purposes. Everything was working fine until...the IT guys upgraded to new file server hardware and installed Windows Server 2003 onto it (they claim it's the exact same version of the Server OS as was used before). Now the iMacs cannot copy files to the network drive. The system displays a message that we do not have sufficient permission to change "folder name". I have checked "Get Info" on the file and/or folder and I'm not listed as someone having access to the item. I add myself but my name does not show up in the list. The exact same problem is occurring with all three iMacs. We can log-on to the iMac just fine--connecting to our corporate user account stored on the server (we're not logging on to a local account). All of our user accounts allow us to administer the iMacs. The PowerMac G5s in our department are unaffected by this glitch. This leads us to believe it's some combination between the Windows Server software and the iMacs. Any one have any ideas? Our IT guys don't know Macs. They are trying, but not making any progress. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!! Greg

Hi BH. Here's our IT Manager's response:
    "Greg,
I hear the change worked. This is an issue because what I essentially did was give you access to change permissions on the file server. What that tells me is that your Mac wants to copy it’s local permissions to the file server. That is a bit of an issue. Since Zach was able to copy over files under his login I have a feeling that you may have set a security setting on under your user profile that tell the OS to copy it’s local permissions to the SMB server. Can you think of anything along those lines that may be set? Did you alter the local permission on your folders in any way? I double checked the old file server had the same exact settings as the new file server up until just now."
Once the permissions issue arose (the morning after they installed the new Server) I selected my network folder and checked the permission settings under "Get Info." I did not see my name as someone having access to the folder so I attempted to add myself, but my name never appeared in the list. Do you think my attempt to add myself created the issue described above? They keep assuring me that the server settings are exactly the same on the new server as the old one. I have no choice but to take their word that they have checked everything that could be a variable on the two servers because I can't check myself.
Does the IT manager's response spark any ideas?
Thanks for your time and thoughts on this issue.
