IMac G5 won't bootup, need help, Cap't J is in trouble!

Alright, Cap't J is in trouble, needs a commander.
My iMac G5 won't bootup.
I can hear the fans loud.
need help please!

Have you tried http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2094 ?
Also, before going to step 5 and taking a screwdriver to it, try:
Powering up with Option held down
Booting from an install DVD with C or Option held down
Booting from an install DVD into Apple Hardware Test by holding D down

New Itunes is not working because my imac is 10.6.8 need help ....

Because you require Lion to run it. You should not have installed it.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Hard Drive icon missing - Desktop folders won't open - Need Help!

I need help! I have a 400 MHz PowerPC G4 with 768 MB SDRAM, no DVD drive - was running OS X 10.3.9 quite happily. We became owners of a new iPod Nano - so we had to upgrade to 10.4.
(I'm writing this on my 800 MHz PowerPC G4 with 768 MB SDRAM, (also no DVD drive) that I upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 without incident.)
Installed 10.4 using a FireWire Hard Drive - installed software updates to 10.4.11 - ran Disk Utility - ran MacJanitor - ran DoktorKleaner - everything was working well.
Rebooted and the Hard Drive Icon had disappeared from desktop. Folders on desktop have all lumped together in the top right hand corner of the screen, and refuse to open.
Only programs in the dock still work - clicking on the Finder icon only gives the option to hide. New Finder Window does not work. Programs can be found in Spotlight, but if they're not in the dock they won't open. Trash won't open or empty.
I attempted to reinstall Mac OS X using FireWire, but now the Hard Drive is full and is telling me it will erase and reinstall. I need to save files off this computer now (Sadly no backup exists) before my wife readies divorce papers.
I tried using FireWire Target Disk Mode to copy files - with the 400MHz as Target I just get a spinning Beach Ball any time I click on the Icon. After far too long it opened up an empty window.
With the 800MHz as the target, the 400MHz does not show it on the desktop, so I have no way of copying files to it.
Anyone have some advice that doesn't involve a time machine?

Whenever something starts going wrong with the computer I suggest you first boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. Then repair the permissions on your computer. You can also repair permissions from DU on your main drive while booted, but to properly verify and repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive.
[Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214]
[Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672]
    [Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."
    A few questions:
Was this a retail installer disc that you used to do the upgrade?
How much free space do you have on the computer?
Did you use the [PPC Combo updater|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html] to get to 10.4.11?
Did you do all these updates in one single session or restart and check your computer had accepted them okay between each update? It is critical to repair permissions before and after each update otherwise the installers won't install fully and you end up with a mix of versions.
You can set the Finder Preferences, general, to display a hard drive icon, but it sounds like your problems are going beyond that?
You can also try trashing your Users -> home folder -> Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.finder.plist file and see if that clears up the issue. That sets the Finder preferences and if it gets corrupted it will cause Finder problems.

  • Exchange Active Sync won't work need help

I have been reading a few dozen of these post that people are having issues with there iphone sync with exchange. I am TOO!.
For some i can get into owa and from the iphone safaria.
The iphone was able verfy the ssl certificate, but nothing is syncing with mail server
    My network infrastructure.
    1. Clustered mail server . Running exchange server 2003.
    2. firewall- port 443 has been verified to be open and able to acces owa from iphone safari
    3. I have NO isa setup in my network.
    4. Called SSL verisign company and everything checked out to be fine.
    5. virtual folders have been verified to be correct.
    6. checked dns report no errors.
    7. AD exchange feature mobile services and protcols was verfied to all on.
    8. turned off wifi
    9. checked all creditals.
And it just won't push anything. I have come to the conclusion that is either IIS or Iphone is using a multiply protocol ports to access the exchange. But i don't know i need HELP
Simple troubleshooting steps to start with:
    1. Check your version of Exchange. Must be at least 2003 w/SP2.
    2. Check your security certificate. If you go to your "https://webmail.yourdomain.com/owa" or "https://webmail.yourdomain.com/exchange" and receive a certificate error, you may want to look into an external certificate from a recognized CA. I used SBS through my registrar.
    3. Check to ensure your "Front-End" and "Back-End" server are not both requiring SSL. That will cause issues with OMA.

You don't want to check OWA (Outlook Web Access) as it is a full mail client for a notebook or desktop.
The iPhone uses ActiveSync OMA for syncing. Thus, you want to check https://www.domain.com/OMA (where www.domain.com is the URL to the Exchange server - same URL as the OWA url) with a notebook or desktop. The "s" in https is needed at OMA requires SSL.
You should see a login prompt for username and password followed by a list of Inbox messages. If you don't, the server is not correctly configured for OMA.
Once OMA works from a desktop or notebook, it is an easy procedure to add an Exchange account to a phone. Just follow the iPhone on screen examples and provide only the path to the Exchange server and not the "/Exchange" following.
This information can be found on many threads in this forum using the Search feature.

  • Looking at buying an 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 iMac.....NEED HELP!

Ok so I'm thinking about switching to Mac from PC and I need help. Here is what I plan on getting:
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    2TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    My questions are:
    1. How long has this configuration been out? i.e. how soon will Apple upgrade the iMac to better CPU and GUI?
    2. Can you add a SSD later?
    3. Without being able to add a New GUI (and other upgrades you can do with a PC) how long would this iMac last with the way technology advances?
    4. What problems if any are the iMac experiencing right now?

    jbrownlow wrote:
I guess I should rephrase the question. How long has the 3.4 i7 and AMD Radeon 6970M been available in the iMac? What I don't wont to do is get the 3.4 i7 and next week a 3.6 comes out etc. I read the same thing from http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iMac
This machine was released in May 2011. The configuration you are quoting is currently state of the art for an iMac. Without knowing how you use your computer it's extremely difficult to say how long it will be useful. If you are professional musician or filmmaker where you tax the CPU's capabilities then spending the money when a significantly faster machine is released should make little difference to you. However if use the machine for basics like surfing the web, e-mail and some MS Office work this machine is overkill now and will be for many years. If you use the machine primarily as a gaming platform then you would enjoy it as long as the GPU keeps up with your gaming demands.
So the question back to you is how do you intend to use the computer?

  • Yosemite made my iMac  so slow. I Need help;-)

I have a iMac 2.5 chez  , 314 GB free memory, 20 GB ram and the poor thing is failing me :-(  It is a lot worse since i have installed Yosemite to the stage where it takes ages to load an application, it freezes and i get the spinning wheel. I have to walk away and come back sometimes hours later and it is still spinning. I am not a Tec with Mac, i can use them but all the stuff which goes on inside i need spelling out for me. Please someone help me !

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Bought a used iMac G5 with no OS - Need Help!

    Hello,
I recently bought an iMac G5. Specs:
    1.8 GHz, 1024 mb, 80 GB, CD-RW, DVD-RW
    Has keyboard and mouse
but it has no operating system installed. I was hoping I might be able to install OS X 10.4.11 from my old macbook, however I don't know enough about computers to figure this out.
Can anyone give me some direction? Do I need to buy a new OS? If so, which one? Do you know of a good place to get a decent deal on it?
Thank you for any help you can give me!

I'm afraid install discs are machine specific, you need to contact Apple and get the install discs for your iMac - 800-767-2775 and they'll send them to you for a modest fee. You can also try using a retail version of Tiger, which has a black label. Anything with a grey label is machine specific and won't work.

  • Usb 1.0 won't work - need help urgently

Happy holidays and hope Santa is working overtime
Got iPod nano for my son and mrs. and can't get them to work properly. Long time mac users, G3 iBook at home (mac 10.3.9), g4 iMac at office but neither have usb 2.0 as older machinese.
For some reason, even after downloading 7.5 iTunes, when we connect new nano with usb connector supplied in box, only get that apple icon popping up; can't connect for some reason, can't see nano on desktop.
Tried it with old Sony Vaio, running WinXP but a gain older model, no usb 2 and only usb 1 ports. Can't read there either.
Funny, when I plug with my old 3rd gen iPod charger, using firewire with common plug, it's charging fine.
Can someone explain if it's the usb port that's a problem? Mrs. leaving to visit mother for few weeks early tomorrow morning and I have appointment with genius bar at 10 am - but too late to help her.

Yep, on my iBook, got message finally that needed 10.4.8.
Re-tried with WinXp (not sure if SP2) and got it connected, trying to rip some CD to sync and completed about 5 cd. After ejecting nano, couldn't get it to 'turn-on' which is weird - so i'm leaving it connected to pc to charge (instructions say 3 hrs).
My suspicion is this is a lemon.
Btw, can i charge this generation nano with the 'traditional' firewire charger that came with my old iPod (3rd gen)? If we do get it to work, my wife won't have pc to charge with when traveling and I'd like to give her my charger to take along?
    Thanks,

  • IMac G5 problem...Need help

This is my first time posting to the IMac G5 discussions, and I hope someone here can really help.
Something weird is happening to my computer when it is being turned on. Nothing on the screen is displayed, and there is a constant beeping sound. Plus the white power light on the lower right, is flashing on and off, and the fan is at very high speed. I'm not sure what is happening, but here are some information on what I did, before I turned it on.
Basically I performed a simple 1 gig memory upgrade (crucial ram), and then when I closed the cover to put the screws back on, I accidentally inserted my screwdriver into the "speaker port", which I believe is adjacent to the lower fan. It is the hole, next to the first screw. I was mistakenly thinking that it was one of the three screws, that need to be tighten again.
Does anyone know what could be the problem or some kind of replacement that I might need.
I am using an IMac G5 17", which came with 256 mb standard, back in Feb 2005.

I never thought of bringing my computer to a service center. Forgive me for asking such a basic question, but can I bring this into my local Apple Store instead. This is where I made my purchase. I heard there is something called a genius bar. How does that work. Is there a fee involved?
Since I got the IMac G5, back in Feb 2005, will this type of assistance be covered by the limited one year warranty?

  • "add printer" utility won't work, need help

I have an IMac “Lamp”. After I upgraded to 10.4.7 the ‘add printer’ utility will not work and so no printer is available.
I had an older HP printer and one fellow at HP said that the problem was with the printer. I bought a new HP Photosmart 8250, installed the software and the same problem exists. The computer can see the printer and recognize it specifically as being plugged into the port but the ‘add printer ‘ utility still doesn’t work.
A nice Canadian lady who works for HP spent well over an hour on the phone with me guiding me through quite a few moves dumping various files but to no avail.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi..
I have a Poer Book G$ )S X 10.4.5. I am having the same problem with my printer utility....won't add printer. I am trying to install a new printer, HP 2575, all-in-one. With the instruction of HP support, I downloaded the latest driver, uninstalled all my other printers, re installed the HP 2575, threw out many files, etc., all with no success. My husband was able to install the printer on his PC (windows)...so it is a MAC problem. Now, there is nothing in my library/printer folder. My system does not list any printers either. When I plug the printer into my MAc with the UBS cable, it shows on the list of printers, but I can't add.
Someone please help if you can.

  • Beachball within 5 minutes of bootup, need help.

    Hi all,
I have an infuriating issue here, lot of issues popping up with my Early 09 iMac lately.
First of all I had to replace the HDD a month ago. It got a fresh/clean install of Yosemite nothing was restored using bootcamp or anything like that.
I haven't installed much on it since then but I am using some third party apps running in the background like Magic Prefs, Google Drive, Plex Media Server, and Adobe CC.
For the past few days it seems like I'm getting a Beachball within 5 minutes of bootup, sometimes if this doesn't occur it will beachball when I try to perform an action [click anything]. It reminds me of what was happening when my HDD began to fail.  It went from perfect performance to unusable very suddenly.
I looked for other solutions online and have tried Repairing disk & disk permissions [no issues], Keychain First Aid [no issues], Removed external drives, disconnected internet.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test [I wonder if it could be the RAM?] but I haven't been able to access it by holding either D or Option D [with internet access]. It did nothing, just booted up as normal.
    Thanks!

It unfroze for a minute and I've found that Spotlight won't open and the icon is missing from the menu bar since trying to use it. The dock is also not appearing.
I has been unfreezing periodically and every time I am inching closer and closer to composing in gmail so I can paste the proper console text. Anything of not above? I am seeing a lot of potential problems but don't know of their severity, or meaning.

  • IMac G4 1.25 GHz (Need Help)...

    Hey all,
Just come back from a long sabbatical, and while I was in the process of organizing I noticed that I haven't touched my iMac in a while and while running Tiger is okay, I felt like I needed  a serious upgrade to my ol' reliable here.
What are my options as far as Leopard 10.5.x is concerned??  I know about the RAM situation, I just need some amount of guidance for the OS part of it.
What part numbers/restore discs should I be aware of??
Thanks in advance for all the help.

The Drop-in DVD for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard that I used (and it will boot the computer, run a full install and gives access to its own disk utility, etc; and install a standalone 10.5 to a fully erased HDD without Tiger) has a verions 10.5 and this number: 2Z691-6040-A ©2007. A mostly black disc with big X, and lavender spiral galaxy behind the X... Check the booted installer's menu options carefully for this to work as a full installer.
And it prefers all the RAM one could throw at it. In the iMac G4 1.25 17"/20" that could be as much as 2GB if the computer were taken apart to access the difficult factory slot where one stick of standard 184-pin RAM hides; and the upgrade slot under the bottom tin plate where a laptop kind of PC2700 DDR333 200-pin SODIMM resides. Since the stock RAM was 256MB and the upgrade slot, empty when shipped, the total would only be about 1.2GB RAM with a 1024MB notebook chip. The same chip fits the bottom slot as the mid-2005 iBook G4 uses.
However, if you upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 there would be no access to use any of the OS 9.2.2 or earlier Mac OS applications. The iMac G4 1.25 can't dual boot, so Classic 9 wouldn't work anymore. But you could put a clone on an external HDD that supports Mac OS X booting (oxford chip) & has its own power supply; if you wanted to keep Tiger and perhaps the ability to use a Classic application on chance you may need one.
The convenience of a bootable backup, though, is also a kind of insurance if you update the backup.
    Anyway, hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!
