Imac getting slow

With an older imac (early 03) at some point should i no longer download some software updates as it could cause my imac to continue to get slower as i add things? These are the specs of my imac. or is it just an allaround slow mac. Is there anything in general i could do to help speed it up? I have about 52 gig of free hard drive space.

You really can't do an Erase & Install if you have nowhere to backup your data. The Erase & Install would remove everything from the computer and just have the Operating System in place. (Even if your computer is running OK, you should still have important files saved elsewhere--on CDs, DVDs or an external hard drive. Your hard drive could fail at any time!)
If things work OK in the new account, you can migrate your data from the old account to the new one, and I'll look for the article about that tomorrow (it's a bit late for me and I'm heading off to bed shortly).
This statement from my previous post:
"If so, you've got a software issue on your hands" basically means you could have a software issue with some part of OS X if an Erase & Install would clear up your web browsing problem.

  • IMac getting slower and slower....

I've had my iMac for just under a year and recently it has seemed to be getting slower and slower and more buggy. Today GoLive CS2 refused to launch. No error code, just bounced in the dock and then stopped. My Finder keeps "not responding" when I am opening a folder on my harddrive. I've had problems with external firewire drives, it's just getting frustrating, and it's been getting worse over the last week or so... Also I've been having font problems too... I haven't installed a massive amount of fonts, but all of a sudden it's telling me it can't find "Arial TT" when I open InDesign I've repaired permissions, zapped PRAM, and I'm performing the hardware test as I type this (on my PowerBook). I've used Macs for many many years and consider myself a pretty advanced user so I'm not thinking this is user error. Has anyone else had similar problems?? I don't use a bunch of third party junk software on here, it's basically apple apps, and the Adobe CS2 Suite. I maxed the RAM with Crucial RAM when I first got it, so all that should still be good. Help? Suggestions? I know I could always wipe it and start again, but unfortunately at this moment I don't have enough external HD to back everything up to do this...

    Hi rorydale,
Speaking of "not enough external HD to back everything up":
You know that Mac OS X needs a lot of free space on the boot drive, like at least 10%-15% free space?
Along with RAM, that's the only thing Mac OS X cannot do well without.
    Then,
before starting a good read of this article and its excellent links:
I would make sure some regular maintenance is performed, just to take a safe start.
    1) Nightly "periodic" maintenance tasks:
Open Terminal and paste this command:
    sudo sh /etc/daily
hit enter, password, enter, wait until you see the prompt again.
    OK now this one:
    sudo sh /etc/weekly
(this one takes a long time, especially if you never ran it. You can use your computer while it is running, but do not quit Terminal)
    Then, this one:
    sudo sh /etc/monthly
Again, wait for the prompt to reappear.
    2) Run Preferential Treatment, delete the corrupted .plist files if it finds some.
    3) Run a Disk Repair with Disk Utility from the Tiger install DVD (menu Utilities).
    4) Permissions Repair of course (from the boot volume, not the install disc)
    5) Fonts can get problematic. I would trash Fonts caches too. Read about Fonts also in the Troubleshooting KB articles...
    6) Users caches can be cleaned just to make sure. You'll see later if you still need to tinker the system and kernel caches.
That's for a start, let us know how it goes...

  • IMac getting slower -and Im getting more frustrated!

Like others it would appear....  I am finding my iMac is getting slower and slower with each day that passes since upgrading to Mavericks.  It is slow to open and close apps.  Slow to open mail.  Often hangs with the little ball spinning forever and I have to hold the start button to shut down.  I've even noticed that simple scrolling jumps all over the place as it is slow to respond. iMessage is often up to 4 minutes behind!  I noticed that others have used EtreCheck which has been helpful to those 'in the know'.  Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated, as I have no diea what's what! Thank you.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock all your user files, reset their ownership, and remove their access-control lists. If you've set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    B.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
    File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.
    C.
"BlackBerry Desktop Manager" is incompatible with Mavericks and should be removed.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Imac gets slower with iphoto

    Hello,
I own a imac g5 1.8 with 1gyg of ram. and im starting ti have around 8000 pictures...and my iphoto is getting slower.... (iphoto library is on a externat hd)
Besside adding new memory is there a way to either
    a. get faster result from iphoto
    b. build more then one library that i can open when i need it insetad of opening all of them?
    Thanks

    Hi Mysteriousmind,
I have a 3,000 image library at 3 gigs in size.
I use a Canon camera which does not make larger Makernotes in the EXIF data.
If you want to find out more about the large Makernote problem that slows iPhoto down to a crawl, visit this thread
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.68b4c129
    Apple Macintosh iPhoto 5 slowness
If you do have one of the cameras that have large Makernote files you may want to try (iPhoto) Exif Cleaner
-Will more memory help speed iPhoto up? It sure will and many have noted that it has.
-There are steps you can take to speed up scrolling in the iPhoto Library.
       do not use shadows
       do not use outlines
       use white for background
view by rolls and keep the rolls closed
when viewing images keep them around 5 or less across in the rows
choose not to "show photo count for albums"
If you have thousands of images it is also advisable to make multiple libraries. Smaller libraries will load and work faster. Use the Option key when launching iPhoto to create and switch between libraries.
You can also use iPhoto Library Manager or iPhoto Buddy to manage your libraries.
    iPhoto Library Manager
    iPhoto Library Manager documentation
this page will show you everything you can do with iPhoto Library Manager.
You can also try iPhoto Buddy
You should have a t 15% free space on your hard drive. Things get slow after that.

  • Imac getting slow and slowerrrrrr

My mac has been getting slower and slower.  Some pages take too long or don't come up.  Have to re-boot ofter.  Went to Utilities and did disk checking on the HD.   Reloaded my original Disc 1 while disk checking and nothing improved.   Have nothing big on my computer.    Just Internet mostly.   Do I need to buy a new and larger HD or what?

  • HELP: iPhoto 6.0.6 memory usage problem, iMac getting *slow*

    Hi,
    I have a 20" iMac with 2 Gig RAM.
I have iPhoto 6.0.6 with lots and lots of pictures and little movies (taken with an old digital camera) -- a "get info" on the "iPhoto Library / Originals" folder says there are 9836 items in there.
When I open iPhoto, the Activity Monitor indicates iPhoto is using 130meg real memory, 130meg virtual memory. With every "page down" in iPhoto (the thumbnails are running about 6 items across) about 50 meg of memory gets added to real memory, and even more gets added to virtual memory.
After just a few minutes of usage it now looks like this:
    Real Memory: 382.43 MB
    Virtual Memory: 1.18 GB
Eventually the computer gets extremely slow and unresponsive; I've seen the iPhoto memory usage as high as:
    Real Memory: 1+ GB
    Virtual Memory: 2+ GB
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can fix this problem?

I have to say that the Virtual Memory numbers compare quite okay with both my Macs here, the Actual Seems slightly higher but noting spectacular. That said, the highest you’ve seen do see quite extraordinary.
    Something to try:
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and make a library there. Import some pics and see if the problem is repeated there.

  • IMac getting slow, likely too full

    Hi,
I have an iMac Early 2008, 24" with 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 800 MHz SDRAM.  The hard disk has a capacity of 320 GB.  I have 50 GB of remaining space.  Almost all of this space is music and family pictures and videos, like my son's first soccer game or first school play.
I am running OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.1
My computer is getting very slow, and I've upgraded the RAM to the maximum that I can (two 2 GB slots).  iPhoto has become so slow that I think my computer has hung up and after 10 minutes I have to Force Quit the program and try again.  I regularly empty my Mail, iPhoto, and computer trash bins.  My computer has two profiles, one for me (the administrator) and one for my wife.  She uses iPhoto as well and dumps all of her iPhone photos on it as well.
It's a great computer and I'd like to keep this one going.
    Two questions:
    1.  Is my computer slow because of all the data on my drive?  or is it because of the computer is getting old and the processor is no longer adequate for today's processing needs?
    2.  Is there a good online place to upload all these valuable pictures, videos, music and other data where I can access it like an external computer?  I have an external WD drive for backups, but I've been told that these devices fail and are not a permanent and secure solution to my needs.
Regardless, because the computer is getting older, I suppose I need to back up all these valuable memories;  but I'm hoping that getting all of this data off my computer MIGHT make it faster and at least give me another couple of years out of it.
I love the new iMac, but it's just darned expensive.  Granted, my iMac has outlived any PC I have ever had.
To my knowledge (which is quite little), buying iCloud space from Apple does not allow me to remove this data off my computer and put in on cloud for easy access.
    Suggestions please.
Please note, I am not very tech savvy.  I know enough to follow simple instructions.
    Thank You,
    Nick

You have as much used space on that drive as you can tolerate. Buy an external drive of the same capacity or more to use as a backup drive. Clone your startup drive to the external drive.
    A. Prep the external backup drive:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    B. Clone the startup drive:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  Seagate and Toshiba both sell an external USB drive in a small enclosure with the drive already installed. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • IMac getting slower and apps keep crashing

    Hi there!
In Feb. last Year (2011) i bought my iMac 27'' and i was pretty satisfied with that. But in the last few months, I encountered A LOT of problems. I will list them afterwards. But before you start giving me some advice you have to know that I used Google a houndred times for each single problem, and none of the solutions that were given helped me out (mostly "delete file XYZ in "cache" tips"), so here is the list and I really hope to get some help!
    -Textedit freezes after opening
-Quicktime Player X freezes after opening
-Safari does not remember my passwords even though i checkedthe "remember password" box
-In Safari, youtube videos do not start loading if I watch in a lower quality than 720p
-the "Steam"-App launches on startup, even though I deleted it from the startup elements AND unchecked the "open on startup" in the Steam-preferences
-Since the installation of Bootcamp (Windows 7) my iMac starts up really slow (from 10 seconds (before) up to 2 Minutes!)
-the iCal app tells me that I don't have permission to access it
I got a 1TB harddisk, of which 200 GB are for Windows 7, and for the rest, onlye 300/800 GB are used, so it can't be a memory problem.
I'm running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 with an 3.6Ghz i5 Processor and 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Memory... the Startup Disk is of course Macintosh HD.
    Hoping for Help!
    thank you

Maybe try this.  Restart your computer in recovery mode (when you hear the chime, press and hold the option key until you are presented with boot options, pick the one that says recovery).   From there, open disk utility and select your Macintosh HD, do a disk repair followed by a permissions repair. Now you should have a known good file structure.  Reboot and see if things improve, from what you've described I think there are other issues but it is always good to start with a known file structure.
Many of the issues you describe sound like user level permission problems.  To fix these you need to reset the ACLs (access control list).  It also sounds like you need to flush your caches.  A program like Onyx or Cocktail will do these things for you.  Onyx is free, do some research on it so you know how to use it.
Finally, my son uses steam and I think it is a flakey program at best.  Look at users/groups in system preferences and then see what starts automatically? steam likes to put something there.  Also check your system for updates including updates for flash.
Your machine should be ripping right along, it just sounds like it got gummed up.

  • IMac getting slower

My iMac (3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 memory 8 GB MHz DDR3) starts more slowly then in the beginning (march 2011) and also is closing down more slowly. Is it possible to speed it up and if so, what can I use?

May I ask you a new question?  Suddenly I see the icon of my Macintosh HD on my desktop. Can I removed it?
Yes it can,  before I give you instructions I would STRONGLY recommend you bookmark and visit these sites often. They are designed for folks that have or have recently switched from using PC:
    Switch 101
    Mac 101
    Find Out How Video tutorials
How you remove the HD icon from your desktop is Finder - Preferences (keyboard shortcut is Command + ,) - click the General tab - unclick the box that says "Show these items on your Desktop."

  • IMac 10.1, OS X 10.7.5, 4 GB RAM, 201 GB free on 999.35 GB HD, gets slower the longer I use the Internet; very noticeable with online browser game Forge of Empires.  Turning iMac off and restarting it brings it back to full speed for an hour or so.

    iMac 10.1, OS X 10.7.5
4 GB RAM (2 of 4 slots used)
201 GB free on 999.35 GB HD
The iMac gets slower the longer I use the Internet - to the point that it takes several seconds for each typed character to appear.  This is very noticeable with the online browser game Forge of Empires.  But, it happens even if not logged on to that game.
Turning the iMac off and restarting it brings it back to what seems like full speed for an hour or so.  Then, it starts to noticeably slow down again.

1st thing : from my point of view upgrade your mac os to latest version.
(their is mac os x mavericks from apple its free for upgrade so download it and install it.)
2nd thing : then upgrade your all browser plugins to latest version.
3rd thing : and use ccleaner to keep clean your mac from junk data or other unuseable data that are created.
4th thing : verify and repair your disk permissions with the use of disk utility or ccleaner
i am sure your computer recover speed.

  • IMac early 2008 getting slow. EtreCheck summary in french

    Hello all,
I have tgis problem with my iMac for a while (I guess since I switched to OS X 10.9).
Some applications are getting slow opening and closing (Mail, Calendar, AddressBook, iPhoto, ...)
For example, active windows of Mail won't close immediately when I click onto the red button. I need to do it many times, switch to another app and back to Mail, and then try again. It is an erratic process. And this happens with other apps.
    Rather frustrating.
Here under is the description of my problem in french (pretty much the same as I wrote here in english) and the picture of my iMac by Etrcheck.
If anyone can help, that would be great.
    Thank you for your attention.
    Description du problème :
Depuis assez longtemps maintenant, mon iMac ralentit.

From comparaison with previous check, it appears i recovered Hard Drive memory: from 58.53 to 107.86  Go.
I don't see the Safari item anymore. Nor the Bit Torrent stuff.
Mail seems to be more efficient. But when OS X reinstalled, Mail opened at first with re-load of all mails; i saw 23 569 mails total reloaded from SENT, to DRAFT, RECEIVED, etc ... for the last 10 years. Some of the mails have files included. Could be the problem for Mail being so slow. Even now when I open Mail it takes time to order properly all emails by date (and this is only for the INBOX display)
I don't know for the RAM. Kind of expensive and the result might not be as expected.
I still can't take screenshot with the keyboard shortcuts... something went wrong i don't know what. If someone has a clue I could then send shots of some of my windows to make sure I have things right.

Uupgrading the ram will help, 2gb simply isn't enough with Mavericks. Your iMac will use up to 6gb of ram,
    Min. RAM Speed:
    800 MHz
    Details:
Supports 800 MHz PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM (200-pin SO-DIMM). Also see: How do you upgrade the RAM in this Aluminum iMac model? How much RAM does it actually support?
    Standard RAM:
    1 GB
    Maximum RAM:
    6 GB*
    Details:
By default, 1 GB of RAM was installed as a single SO-DIMM module. One slot free. *Apple officially supports 4 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB SO-DIMM module. In the US (and many other countries), site sponsor Other World Computing sells memory -- as well as other upgrades -- for this iMac. In Australia, site sponsor RamCity sells memory and other upgrades for this iMac.
Get ram form either OWC http://eshop.macsales.com or Crucial http://www.crucial.com to avoid problems with incompatible ram.

  • My iMac is getting slower and slower

My Mac (3.2GHz Intel Core i3 4GB Memory) is about 4 years old and has been getting slower and slower over the last 5 or 6 months. An earlier post recommended using 'Etracheck' which I have done and attached the information below. I think I may have a Ram issue but I would be grateful for any comments.
    Thanks
