Imac going crazy

Help. My Imac (Intel) running OSX 10.6.7 has started going crazy - writing new file names, sending messages on MS messenger etc. Can anyone help? I tried rebooting after resetting the PRAM but with no luck. Is there anyway to set a safe mode? switch off automatically loaded programmes such as messenger? Has anyone else seen this problem? The machine is switched off pending help - I am writing this from another machine. Thanks

  • IMac permissions going crazy! Need Help!

When I turn on my iMac, it's fine. After I start using it for awhile, it starts going crazy on me, as if clicking back and forth between any window that is open and the desktop. Also, I try and left click on the mouse, but it acts as if it is a right click. Sometimes when I type with my keyboard, it will act as if I am holding down a key. Each action happens when I am trying to type, click, or just use any application.
I tried to solve this issue by going into Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and clicked "Mactintosh HD", then "verify disk permissions". Once it verified it, I clicked "repair disk permissions". The issue seemed to get resolved, but only temporarily. Everytime I log on to my iMac, it keeps going crazy agian, and then I have to repair disk permissions again. I'm hoping it's not a Mac virus. Can anybody help me resolve this issue permanently? Thanks!

Try to determine if it's a battery problem with a wireless keyboard, get a wired keyboard and mouse and reboot the machine with that and see if it continues.
Once you have ruled out the external hardware, then we can start looking at software issues.
Get a copy of your personal data file folders (Music, Pictures, Documents etc.) off the computer to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine) as soon as possible.
Read through this User Tip and report back what you have tried

  • IMac Problem - Crazy Curser

    Hey Forum,
I hope you can help with me this problem I have been having with my brand new iMac 27" desktop. Its only two days old and sometimes when I am using it the curser goes crazy and starts jumping all over the screen uncontrollably and clicking. I have tried turning the bluetooh mouse off when this happens but still no joy so maybe I am thinking its an issue with software?
    Any solutions would be great.
    Thankyou
    Eddy.

I now have a mouse mat which is black, the mouse originally was on the wooden desk so hopefully this will make a difference and stop the issue. I do have a wired mouse which I can try if it occurs again. The mouse setting is fine, nothing that would make it go crazy and start moving and clicking everywhere erratically.
The only reason I thought it wasn't the mouse is because when this occured I turned the mouse off manually underneath and the curser was still clicking and moving everywhere like crazy..
Hopefully this will solve the issue but if not I will try a wired mouse and if still no luck will come ask for more help.
    Thanks,
    Eddy.

  • Problem with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, the mac goes crazy!

I have a problem with mi imac g5 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) bought the last year.
During the last week the system are wrong because when I open a aplication like itunes, illustrator or another one like a simple navigator "Firefox", somethimes this goes crazy, the keyboard write diferent and the finder folder open and close really really slow, and sometimes not even that, and everything goes bad, so I have to close the session or to restart the computer, I already reinstall the software, but nothing goes better It´s the same...It`s really maddening because in the 5 hours more or less I have to restart 4 times! depend of the day...
I reed that The software Lion and Mountain Lion have many mistakes, it`s really?maybe it`s one of them?
Anyone have the same problem? Maybe I have to restart again all the computer with all the programs? Or someone Knows with is the problem and the answer?
    Thanks a lot!
    I hope you understand me...

Is OSX Lion not the same as OSX Mountain Lion?
Correct. You would need to upgrade to Mountain Lion to be able to utilitize AirPlay with your Apple TV.
Make sure your Mac can run Mountain Lion >  System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion
Moutain Lion can be purchased from the  Mac App Store - OS X Mountain Lion for $19.99 (U.S.)
A good way to discern one OS X from another is the version number.
    Lion   OS X v10.7
    Mountain Lion   OS X v10.8
To see which version your Mac has installed, click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.

  • Imac goes back to password request screen

imac goes back to password request screen over and over again after an upgrade notification " CS5 Service Manager needs Java 6 " . This happened yesterday after running a software upgrade, somehow after so many tries and repairing disk, using RP, etc it started to work. TODAY, another software upgrade with a "malware removal' file came and I thought Apple had found and solved the problem....WRONG I went to the same stae again....going crazy....please help. Thank you

    Hi Mauricio,
I remember a sim. problem on MacOS 10.6. I remember that by then it was Firefox which needed to be upgraded to use the systems JRE (Java Resource Engine) instead of some other floating around on the OS. Maybe the conclusions drawn in the thread (external link) can help you, as this sounds a little like your problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1153590
Furthermore, I urgently advice you to scan your computer for viruses and malware programs. MacScan is offering a trial mode, where you can do this for free. Hope that helped.

  • Have the specs increased or am I going crazy?

Ok I swear when the iMac G5 came out the specs were different. I remember for $1499 you got a 1.8GHz, 512MB, 80GB, Superdrive and a ATI 9200/Geforce FX 5200. I just decided to look at the specs again and saw for $1499:
    17-inch widescreen LCD
    2GHz PowerPC G5
    667MHz frontside bus
    512K L2 cache
    512MB DDR400 SDRAM
    160GB Serial ATA hard drive
    Slot-load 8x SuperDrive (double-layer)
    ATI Radeon 9600
    128MB DDR video memory
    56K internal modem
Were these the specs the entire time or did they just update them? Am I going crazy?!?!?

They didn't "just" update the iMac, but back in April Apple did release the Rev. Bs, officially known as Ambient Light Sensor models, with specs as you describe.
Don't play WOW so I can't help you there.
The ambient light sensor, by the way, controls the brightness of the power light, which some Rev. A users found intolerably bright, especially when the machine was sleeping. Now it dims in dim ambient light.

  • QuickTime going crazy

When I'm watching those Apple Special Events, the QuickTime sometimes goes crazy. The picture is bad and only sound comes. Like that the video is stuck for few seconds.. It's annoying sometimes. And if I open some other window, I have to load the video again, cause it goes nuts! It is really annoying sometimes. Is it just because I have stupid-Windows. I would really want to have new iMac G5! I'm intrested in making music ^^ But does anyone know why that happens in QuickTime?

Yeah, i am having the audio sync problem too. I work in native hdv, export to h.264 with quicktime conversion, set the frame rate to current, and when i get the finished clip it looks great but the audio is slightly ahead of the video.
This has to be an hdv issue because if i copy and paste into an uncompressed 8 bit sequence and render out then do the same quicktime conversion to h.264 my clip comes out fine with the audio synced.
    i am using fcs 5.1.4 and os x 10.4

My situation is improving a little.  When I returned home I found that my imac went to sleep during the match process (I would think that the process would keep the imac awake, but I recommend people with large libraries disable energy saving features while Match is working).  When it completed the process the second time I tried, a LOT of the greyed out tracks returned to my iOS devices.  The only ones missing right now are the ones pending upload to the cloud.  I have a few tracks that I've purchased and are on my iMac HDD that are greyed out, but that list is down to 10-15 out of 12,000... so I can work on those when Match is done.
I'm surprised that the iOS devices would restrict you from accessing sync'd content while Match is running - i.e. the content is already on the device.  However, it's error handling that must not currently exist in the service.
My biggest take away right now is the lack of information Apple provided on this service.  I'm using third-party tutorials online instead of a simple "what is Match and how does it work" document from Apple...  Documentation is still a must, especially for new and potentially complicated services like this.  I.E. tell me that you are going to restrict my access to my own content during this process, and that this process may take 2-3 days (still uploading).

  • Fan going crazy when booting

When I boot up iMac, the fan goes crazy. After a moment it stops and is quiet again. I unplugged my power and plugged it in again but that does't work. I tried to start AHT by holding D when booting, but that didn't work. I didn't get any discs when I bought my Mac so I can't run AHT using the disc. How can this be fixed?
I also have Windows 7 installed but I don't know if this is relevant. The fan goes mental everytime i boot up. It doesn't matter whether I do that with Windows or OSX.

OS X Mountain Lion- Use Apple Hardware Test
Intel-based Macs- Using Apple Hardware Test

  • Safari going crazy

    Hi,
Im an iMac user and my Safari browser has been going crazy for the past 2 weeks. Almost after every action i do, a new tab comes up and directs it to various pages. Most often is the mackeeper. Sometimes, some online casino page. That is problem one. problem two is at the tab on top where you enter the page address, i usually use it as a quick search tab and before, i've set it up to google as default search engine. now, it has changed by itself into some random and unfamilia search engine. i have tried changing the settings at 'preferences' but it just goes back to that weird search engine. how do i fix this?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Track pad is going crazy

I have been using track pad for my iMac for several years, but just recently, it has been going crazy by operating erratically so it's no longer usable. I looked up the apple community and I am not the only one. Also, there seems to be no solution posted. Should we just expect the life cycle of track pad to be just couple of years?

I went into the Apple store and explained the problems with the track pad. I also asked the employee to connect my track pad to the new iMac on display. My track pad behaved erractically as usual and the guy spoke with the one of the Genius' at the bar and they told me they would repalce the track pad as one time thing. This is why Apple is so awesome. I can not think of any other company that would do this after the warranty period is over. Thanks Apple!

My Finder is going crazy.  Keep getting a message saying it quit unexpectedly and asking if I want to restore windows, but I can't get it to stop.  buttons don't work.

    Something else you can try.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

My macbook seems to be going crazy. At certain points (and for hours) I get the oh snap page on chrome, safari doesnt work, macbook wont let me create any files or for example upload music to itunes. I restored my mac so im sure its not a malware problem. The only thing that solves it is switching off and on , but sometimes I have to do that for 6-7 times before its ok or wait for a few hours. Some help please

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
