Imac going to sleep intermittently while in use

Found this issue on many forums, but unfortunately I cannot find a solution.  Taking to an apple store for repair is not an option.  If I'm going to spend $300-$400 for repair, I might as well purchase a new PC.  I am not that attached to this mac, and now with operating issues, I'm even less so.  At least with a PC I can ctrl+alt-del and start all over.  I was expecting more than 4 years out of a $1200 imac, so if I have to replace repair every few years, I'm thinking I'd rather start with a clean slate for $400 every few years with a new PC.  Very frustrated not being able to find a solution online about this problem, seeing that it seems so common.
While working on imac and surfing the net, my screen will intermittently go to sleep.  I can wiggle the mouse and click it and it will come back on right where I left off, internet connection and all. Once it happens, it continues to happen until I shut down and walk away for a good length of time (overnight).  Problem seems to happen when the imac has been running for many hours at a time.  I have set up the activity monitor, but I don't know what the numbers mean or what to look for.
This initially started happening this past summer, and I thought it was a heat issue, but now that it's happening mid-winter, not so sure.  Also, in the summer this seemed to be prompted by streaming online, but now it is just from surfing.  Not sure if it would shut down if I was working in Pages or Numbers, as I do so infrequently.  Doesn't matter if it's Safari or Firefox and it's not a hot corners/sleep issue.  Also noticed my fan runs loud sometimes, but not always.  Not sure if it's a related problem.  Does not sleep because of fan, no consistency in shutting down, etc.
Someone who has had this same problem and resolved it, please respond.  I've seen many postings from people with the same problem, but responses are from people with the same problem.  Looking for a solution, please.
Thanks.
Sherry

It does sound like a heat-related issue. The fact that it takes a while from a cold start to begin happening, and that it contines until the machine is shut down for a while, and that it is exacerbated by streaming video (which tends to increase the amount of internal heat generation), and the increased fan speed, all point to a heat-related problem.
The place to start is to ensure the iMac's air vents are clean: http://www.ehow.com/how_12027325_clean-vents-imac.html
However, with a computer that old it's possible that enough dust has filtered through the vents and gotten built up on the internal components that it will need to be cleaned out to fix the problem. Assuming you don't want to do that yourself, you might check with the local Apple store to see if they will clean it for you at a reasonable price.

  • After Mountain Lion, iMac goes to sleep even while Quicktime is converting files

    Hello!
After Mountian Lion, I have had to change my Energy setting to NEVER put the computer to sleep. iMac has been going to sleep even while it is converting files. This never happened with the previous OSX.
Does anyone know why it goes to sleep even when tasks are being performed? It's very annoying.
    Thanks!

Same problem here on a Mid 2007 Core 2 Duo -- set to "never" but keeps dozing off.
Extra lousy since it's also the print and media server.

  • Windows 7 RC goes to sleep automatically while in use

    Hello everyone!
When running Windows 7 RC on my laptop it sometimes goes to sleep even when I am using it. For example, while playing a game the screen just goes black and Windows sleeps. That is very frustrating because I have to wake it up and see that the game I was playing is closed. This problem occurred many times and during several different games. Although not every game is affected by this. I am not sure it happens too when I run applications.
I pretty much turned sleep off in all the settings in the Windows Control Panel. It is only suppose to sleep when the battery has only 1% left but my battery is always charged when running Windows.
Maybe I should also mention that my battery is in a very poor condition. I use this battery since about little more than a year and it has run through 385 cycles with only 27% of health left.
I hope someone can help me with this because if I cannot even play games on Windows then there is no reason to keep my Boot Camp partition.
    Thank you!

I have the same problem you both have, and I have not confirmed this with Apple, but I'm almost positive it's an over heating issue. When your MacBook Pro goes to sleep while you were gaming, hurry up and touch the left fan vent next to the built in keyboard. Are we cooking eggs here or what? I'm presuming as a failsafe, once the CPU/GPU hits a certain temperature, an auto sleep function is triggered to prevent the system from cooking itself. As a work around I bought a laptop fan, which keeps it a lot cooler and has dimmed down the automatic sleeping issue. I think the main issue is that Apple's Bootcamp drivers aren't supporting fan control, therefore the fans are staying at their normal speed, when they really should be maxing out their speed when you're gaming.
    Hope this helps.

  • My imac goes to sleep even when in use

i ran the hardware test and got this message:logic board-error code 2 STH/1/2 CPU T-Diode
    what should i do/

This is not only a logic board problem.
I had the same exact problems as you and have even got the same exact message. I ended up having to get the whole motherboard replaced because of one very simple but troubling problem.
The motherboard is designed as such where Apple put the the temperature sensor running from the hard drive right next to the CPU processor. Over time, the high heat of the CPU processor causes the plastic/rubber surrounding the wire to become brittle and even melt. When this happens, the system gets a bad reading from the hard drive and thusly causes a louder, faster fan noise; and eventually, the computer starts to fall asleep even while in use.
Simply put, you will probably need to have your mother board replaced. Contact Apple with your error code, and explain the problem carefully to them because it is not in the usual problems they have faced. I had my motherboard replaced at the end of April and it seems to be running fine for now.

  • Imac goes to sleep when downloading and errors occur

I have a Imac and whenever i download largish programs from  the appstore which take a little while to download, the Imac goes into sleep mode and when i restart the imac, the download has stopped and says an error has occurred. I then have to restart it and resign in with my apple id and it start again.
This isn't a massive issue on programmes which take up to 30  inutes but larger programs which take a few hours to download (I am in a area with relatively low broadband speed) I cant leave it to download and go and do somehting else or leave it over night.
Does anyone know how to turn off the auto-sleep mode and leave it on conctantly until turned off ?
    Thanks

  • 3 Z's then Imac goes to sleep

I have recently had a problem that is extremely annoying. I happens even if I am using the mac at the time. What happens is that all of a sudden there are 3 Z's that appear in the centre of the screen then my Imac goes to sleep. This has been happening for about 4 days.
Does anyone have any idea about what is going on?

It may be an Apple Remote putting the iMac to sleep. Someone may be playing a trick on you. See this thread about someone else with the same issue:

  • IMac goes to sleep/hibernate multiple times per day after installing Maverick OS. I have to shutdown and power back on.

iMac goes to sleep/hibernate multiple times per day after installing Maverick OS. Moving the mouse or hitting the spcaebar will not wake the pc.
I have to shutdown and power back on. My iMac was purchased in January 2011 and no longer in warrenty.  The energy saver 'sleep' and 'display' settings are set at 10 minutes. When I changed to 'never' the machine got very hot and I changed the settings back.  I have checks by: Put hard disk to sleep when possible and wake for network access.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I have a year old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi.  No problem with the Macbook and iPad.  A lot of people seem to have the same problem.  What's the solution?

I have a year-old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi from  Airport Express.  No problem with the Macbook or my iPad.  It seems a lot Mac users are having the same problem.  Is there a solution?  Does Apple have a solution?

    Sometimes there are problems.
Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
I repair permissions at least once a month....
The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD?

How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD? I want to continue to back up my devices including those of my wife while travelling without using the cloud and not returing home for several weeks.
    Any ideas or solutions?
    Thanks for your help.

You can use any Mac with a recent copy of iTunes to back up an iPhone or iPad. It doesn't have to be the one you usually synch with, so long as you don't let it try to do a synch.
Just take fresh backups on the MBA. As for how to get the backups onto the external drive, I'll have to leave that to others; I've never tried.

  • IMac goes to sleep; won't wake up

After burning my first DVD I noticed the iMac goes to sleep, the light pulsating for a few moments then it disappears (screen is still dark) and it will not wake by touching keyboard or moving the mouse. (I had to unplug it and hit start-up button to get iMac back up & running).
It seems to run fine except for this sleep issue. I can re-awake it at the stage where the screen saver is still on; after that it's in a coma. I have deleted the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file (suggested by Dale in another post).
I know I can set the computer to "Never" go to sleep but is that a viable option? And, may this sleep problem be a symptom showing some problem exists w/ the power supply or the logic board as I've seen described in other posts. i.e. Should I be calling in the Apple Care people to diagnose my comatose Mac?

I called Apple Care; the tech ran through a process involving unplugging all peripherals, etc etc; the end result being that my iMac is diagnosed w/ a power supply issue. It will qualify to be repaired under the iMac G5 Repair Extension Plan, free of charge. (My iMac also needed a logic board to be replaced 6 months after purchase in Jan. 2005.) My advice: don't purchase the "first generation" of a product line; too often the kinks haven't yet been worked out. If you must make such a purchase, buy the extended warranty (the ProCare plan) and protect your investment.

  • My iMac goes into sleep mode, won't come out until I unplug and replug the computer then hit the power button. Just hitting the power button alone won't restart the iMac.

My Imac goes into sleep mode but won't come out.  The keyboard/mouse won't rouse it and the power button won't do it either.  I have to unplug the computer, re-plug it in and then hit the power button.  Help?

I looked around the internet and found an old post that seems to have solved the problem.  I had a relatively new USB port (powered) that I unplugged and, ta da, the problem disappeared.  I'm not sure why this happens (I'm not a tech person) but it seems like this should have been worked out in testing somewhere.

  • IMac going to sleep while I'm working on it

I will be working on my Imac, final Cut or Imovie or just simply surfing the internet and the screen will go blank. I move the mouse or a key and the computer comes back the way it was why is it going to sleep on its own?

You are describing the screen going dark while you are working. And you say that moving the mouse brings it back. That sounds like display sleep. Just moving the mouse wouldn't wake up the computer if it had entered sleep. You would need to click it or press a key.
    >I have the engery Saver set to 15 min.
Which one is set to 15 min? There are two "sleep" functions, computer sleep and display sleep. Fifteen minutes is much too short for computer sleep and much too long for display sleep.

  • My iPad randomly goes into sleep mode while I am using it?

All of a sudden, when ever I use my iPad 2 it goes into sleep mode. It did it three times while I typed this message.  As I am running an app it will just go into sleep mode with out me doing so and I have to press the home button to wake it up. Doesn't matter what app I am running. I have 4gb of storage available.  Most of the time it brings me back to the app I was using when it went to sleep.  Has anyone else suffered this issue. I am running the latest iOS 6.0.

What "issue"? This is perfectly normal. By default, all (fairly-recent) Apple products will go to sleep if left idle for a certain period of time. This is NOT normal, however, if in the app, you are pressing buttons on the screen. If you are doing something like reading, for example, try setting your iPad to not go to sleep that quickly.
(Google how, I don't completely remember.)

  • IMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, Finder issues with flash drives - related?

My iMac falls asleep for no known reason, often in the middle of active use. (Similar problem recently described in thread with messageID=11829917.)
Sleep onset is frequent but seems to vary based on both currently-running software and attached devices (particularly USB flash drives). It will almost always wake up when I hit the space bar afterward, but might sleep again within a minute or two, then not for an hour or more. The sleep occurs with little notice (brief stall of display, sometimes enough time to click on another app window and bring that forward before the screen goes dark), and 95% of the time the computer wakes up after hitting the spacebar. The other 5 % of the time the display reappears but the entire OS is frozen and usually requires unplugging the power cable. There are other symptoms in the Finder - more below. Once in a while the fan revs up like a WWII fighter plane taking off from a carrier, but this is unusual and all the really irritating stuff also happens without this symptom, which usually stops on its own. Immediately after reawakening error messages are displayed to report that flash drives were improperly disconnected (Tell me about it! This has been the case for several months whether the computer goes to sleep by itself or if I put it there manually.)
The computer seems to go into sleep mode most frequently when not-particularly-demanding graphics (Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader) and video (QuickTime Pro 7.6.4) apps are running. Turning these off makes nod-offs less frequent but doesn't stop it entirely. When video thumbnails are displayed in Finder windows a lot of time may be required to load the data and this often paralyzes everything else AND this also seems to be a trigger for a nod-off (i.e. QuickTime not necessary to make the computer choke). This is highly variable and some video clips load quickly (< 20 sec), while others take several minutes, and this doesn't necessarily correlate with file size.
Another factor is whether flash drives are connected - these seem to make the nod-offs more frequent AND Finder regularly loses communication to these both while just sitting there and also in the middle of file transfers. A very early 250 MB drive (Lexar - vintage 2004) will always communicate, but different USB2-capable drives all are either unreliable (Lexar 8 GB and KData 4 GB both < 1 yr old) or apparently dead (Lexar 2 GB ~ 2 yr old). The failures may be damaging the drives - they are inconsistent-to-bad at communicating with my MacBook Pro. I know this sounds like the drives are at fault, but there are things which make me suspect the OS (both computers use the same version): 1) different flash drives display the same on-again-off-again behavior AND the 2) the 2 GB drive that hasn't communicated with my Macs in over a month has no trouble talking with my wife's WinXP computer. When communication isn't working with these drives, they do not show up in either Finder or Disk Utility. When the Mac-dead 2 GB Lexar is plugged into either computer and I launch Disk Utility, the initial scan for drives never finishes so I have to force quit. (When they are working, on the iMac the large drives only appear in Finder if I go to User and press Command-uparrow (to go up a directory layer) - in columns display mode nothing appears in the left-hand column.
(The following describes a set of problems I've had a little longer and which may or may not be related):
At times the Finder loses some but not all functions:
    1) Sometimes files in the Trash can't be ejected* even when all apps are turned off
    2) usually when problem 1) is observed, no keyboard commands work: nothing happens when pressing Command-W, Command-uparrow or Command-N to open a new window. Text typed will not be entered to change filenames (but this can still be done by typing the desired text in TextEdit, copying there and selecting and pasting with mouse commands.)
<* I have downloaded an app for forcing file deletion, but haven't really needed it - the delete option and keyboard commands all return after shutdown and reboot, and there's usually enough annoying stuff going on by this time that that seems the best thing to do.>
Things which I've tried to fix it with so far (not in this order):
    - blowing dust out of the back with canned air
    - checking temperatures - CPU/GPU showing 72/73, HD bay 51, etc.
    - fixing permissions from normal boot
    - boot from install disk and running extended hardware test (no problems found during scans repeated several times during the past month)
    - fixing permissions and running Disk First Aid from install disk boot
    - getting files off the hard drive (was as low as 3 GB free space, currently ~ 35 GB and climbing)
    - clearing PRAM
    - resetting system manager (name? - hold down power button when reconnecting power cable, etc.)
    - Power Saver display and computer auto sleep are shut off (both on "never" - I regularly put it to sleep manually)
    - virus scans (Clam XAV)
I realize that this is a kitchen sink collection of symptoms, but these things may be related and if so, OS developers may want to be sure these problems are avoided in current versions. (Yes I will upgrade my OS soon...)

Thanks for checking in, Miriam - sorry to get testy about it.
The iMac's RAM is maxed out (2.5 GB)
Yes, the system log does report overtemp message to Power management prior to shutdown (today's log at end of post)
Where do I find normal temperatures for the system? What are the important parameters to watch and what sort of fixes are possible?
    iStat currently shows:
    HD 54° CPU 67° GPU 72° Incoming air 38° (???)
HD bay 54° GPU ambient 71° opt drive 49°
    ==========================================
Console.log was largely full of stuff about a bad flash drive I stuck in as a Hail Mary and failure of communication with a scanner (old HP, driver package installs a program which starts at launch which doesn't show up under Startup Items. Apparently the permission got mislaid, so I fixed permissions and this seems OK now. (Only included that because some of it shows up in System.log and it's not worth focusing on.)
[That all said, there is a software/OS component to the problem and it is graphics-related. The other night I was looking at some flash videos in a series and one in particular repeatedly caused shutdown, while others played normally: domain = jebhost.com /youtube/list.php?q=Henry+8.o&Submit=GO "The Tricycle Thief" only played through once out of about six tries.]
