IMac going to sleep while I'm working on it

I will be working on my Imac, final Cut or Imovie or just simply surfing the internet and the screen will go blank. I move the mouse or a key and the computer comes back the way it was why is it going to sleep on its own?

You are describing the screen going dark while you are working. And you say that moving the mouse brings it back. That sounds like display sleep. Just moving the mouse wouldn't wake up the computer if it had entered sleep. You would need to click it or press a key.
>I have the engery Saver set to 15 min.
Which one is set to 15 min? There are two "sleep" functions, computer sleep and display sleep. Fifteen minutes is much too short for computer sleep and much too long for display sleep.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "Previous Shutdown" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Computer goes to sleep while I'm working

    Hi everyone,
I was hoping someone can pinpoint my problem and help me fix it.
My computer goes to sleep while I'm working on it.
Just by itself. Sometimes right in a row.
Does anyone know any tips that I can use.
I copied the contents from Console.app
and here is what I found:
sleep demand recorded: Thu Mar 1 08:14:57 2007\n\n
    Mar 1 08:49:24 My-G5 EÊæÔ[137]: sleeptime recorded: Thu Mar 1 08:14:57 2007\n\n
    Mar 1 08:49:24 My-G5 EÊæÔ[137]: waketime is: Thu Mar 1 08:49:24 2007\n\n
    Mar 1 08:51:46 My-G5 EÊæÔ[137]: sleep demand recorded: Thu Mar 1 08:51:46 2007\n\n
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
    Cheers!

  • My imac g5 goes to sleep while in use. typically when im playing games

For the last several months, my mac has been going to sleep during use. Typically when im playing games, like second life, or in any type of programs, but it has also been going to sleep while im watching videos on youtube or hulu. It's getting worse and worse, and once it goes to sleep the first time, it doesnt stay on long afterwards. When browsing the internet, its fine. I've recently backed up 40,000 images that I had on my computer, and deleted for more memory space. but it didnt stop it from going into sleep mode, it just doesnt go as quickly as it was before. I was told that it was a memory problem, but since i deleted all of the images off of my computer, the problem still persists. I even turned sleep mode to "never". Here are some of my computer stats:
    Memory: 512 MB
    Processor: 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5
    Space Free: 104.18 GB
    Space utilized: 128.58 GB
My monitor stays warm, never gets hot, but sometimes i can hear the fan blowing loudly when it goes into sleep mode
If anyone could help, i would greatly appreciate it =)

The temps are a bit higher than I'd expect under normal circumstances, and too high while playing games, but what is the room temp where it is?
I def. think its a temp thing now. but why does it only raise when im playing games or watching videos online?
Games tipically press the CPU, Video Card, RAM, and everything else much harder than most apps.
It may be a Fan not working properly, or just dust buildup.
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    Report any errors it finds.

  • IMac goes to sleep/hibernate multiple times per day after installing Maverick OS. I have to shutdown and power back on.

iMac goes to sleep/hibernate multiple times per day after installing Maverick OS. Moving the mouse or hitting the spcaebar will not wake the pc.
I have to shutdown and power back on. My iMac was purchased in January 2011 and no longer in warrenty.  The energy saver 'sleep' and 'display' settings are set at 10 minutes. When I changed to 'never' the machine got very hot and I changed the settings back.  I have checks by: Put hard disk to sleep when possible and wake for network access.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Imac goes to sleep when downloading and errors occur

I have a Imac and whenever i download largish programs from  the appstore which take a little while to download, the Imac goes into sleep mode and when i restart the imac, the download has stopped and says an error has occurred. I then have to restart it and resign in with my apple id and it start again.
This isn't a massive issue on programmes which take up to 30  inutes but larger programs which take a few hours to download (I am in a area with relatively low broadband speed) I cant leave it to download and go and do somehting else or leave it over night.
Does anyone know how to turn off the auto-sleep mode and leave it on conctantly until turned off ?
    Thanks

Applications > System Preferences > Energy Saver
    set computer sleep to never
    set display sleep to never
uncheck put hard disks to sleep when possible.
or use Caffeine: Lighthead - Caffeine

  • IMac goes to sleep; won't wake up

After burning my first DVD I noticed the iMac goes to sleep, the light pulsating for a few moments then it disappears (screen is still dark) and it will not wake by touching keyboard or moving the mouse. (I had to unplug it and hit start-up button to get iMac back up & running).
It seems to run fine except for this sleep issue. I can re-awake it at the stage where the screen saver is still on; after that it's in a coma. I have deleted the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file (suggested by Dale in another post).
I know I can set the computer to "Never" go to sleep but is that a viable option? And, may this sleep problem be a symptom showing some problem exists w/ the power supply or the logic board as I've seen described in other posts. i.e. Should I be calling in the Apple Care people to diagnose my comatose Mac?

I called Apple Care; the tech ran through a process involving unplugging all peripherals, etc etc; the end result being that my iMac is diagnosed w/ a power supply issue. It will qualify to be repaired under the iMac G5 Repair Extension Plan, free of charge. (My iMac also needed a logic board to be replaced 6 months after purchase in Jan. 2005.) My advice: don't purchase the "first generation" of a product line; too often the kinks haven't yet been worked out. If you must make such a purchase, buy the extended warranty (the ProCare plan) and protect your investment.

  • IPod screen goes to sleep while playing

    Hello,
I have what I believe is either the 6th or 7th generation iPod 120gig. I just picked it up used and it is in good condition.
The problem I have is, while I have it playing on my Bose system, the songs play, but I can't see what song is actually playing like my 1st generation iPod does. This one, the screen goes to sleep while the songs play. is there a fix for this possibly? I have many songs and it's always nice to just look over and see what is playing.
    Thank you,
    JG

Your problem is that your iPod is not sensing that your headset is inserted. There is a pin inside the headphone port on the Nano that senses if it is inserted fully. If it does not sense anything, it will pause playback to save battery power when the screen dims. Here are the solutions:
Insert it fully. This will fix it for most of you. Press that thing in there all the way. You should feel and hear a full click when it is fully seated. If you can see ANY silver of the headset jack, it is not fully inserted.
Debris inside the headset port. If you are totally unable to push the headset jack all the way, the most likely problem is that you have crud inside your headphone jack. Try blowing it out or slapping it against your palm with the headset port facing your palm to try and get the stuff out. If you look into he jack with a light, you should be able to see to the bottom. The entire inside of the headset port is white, so if it looks dark at the bottom, that is the crud that is keeping your nano from working.
Headset jack or plug issue. If you cannot solve the problem with 1 or 2, then there is likely something physically wrong with either the headset jack on your headphones or the headset port on the nano.
If none of the above works, you need to take it to the Apple store or wherever you purchased it. I think they are still under warranty.

  • My iMac goes into sleep mode, won't come out until I unplug and replug the computer then hit the power button. Just hitting the power button alone won't restart the iMac.

My Imac goes into sleep mode but won't come out.  The keyboard/mouse won't rouse it and the power button won't do it either.  I have to unplug the computer, re-plug it in and then hit the power button.  Help?

I looked around the internet and found an old post that seems to have solved the problem.  I had a relatively new USB port (powered) that I unplugged and, ta da, the problem disappeared.  I'm not sure why this happens (I'm not a tech person) but it seems like this should have been worked out in testing somewhere.

  • 3 Z's then Imac goes to sleep

I have recently had a problem that is extremely annoying. I happens even if I am using the mac at the time. What happens is that all of a sudden there are 3 Z's that appear in the centre of the screen then my Imac goes to sleep. This has been happening for about 4 days.
Does anyone have any idea about what is going on?

It may be an Apple Remote putting the iMac to sleep. Someone may be playing a trick on you. See this thread about someone else with the same issue:

  • I have a year old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi.  No problem with the Macbook and iPad.  A lot of people seem to have the same problem.  What's the solution?

I have a year-old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi from  Airport Express.  No problem with the Macbook or my iPad.  It seems a lot Mac users are having the same problem.  Is there a solution?  Does Apple have a solution?

    Sometimes there are problems.
Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
I repair permissions at least once a month....
The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • Iphone goes to sleep while music is playing

iphone goes to sleep while music is playing
How can I play music without it going to sleep and stopping?

Going to sleep means the screen is off so music should not stop when the screen turns off.
Any change after powering your iPhone off and on and/or a reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release?

  • ATV looses connection because iMac goes to sleep.

Everything connects fine and I can stream a movie or music for about 30-40 minutes then it all stops when the iMac goes to sleep. The Mac energy save options have the 'wake for network access' box checked, but it still goes to sleep. What am i doing wrong?
    Setup: iMac-Airport Extreme - ATV3

You've reset the SMC, how about the PRAM?

  • After Mountain Lion, iMac goes to sleep even while Quicktime is converting files

    Hello!
After Mountian Lion, I have had to change my Energy setting to NEVER put the computer to sleep. iMac has been going to sleep even while it is converting files. This never happened with the previous OSX.
Does anyone know why it goes to sleep even when tasks are being performed? It's very annoying.
    Thanks!

Same problem here on a Mid 2007 Core 2 Duo -- set to "never" but keeps dozing off.
Extra lousy since it's also the print and media server.
