IMac gone buggy

Freezing every few minutes, crashing every 15-45 minutes. Never run any Windows OS on it, neither in Boot Camp or Parallels Desktop nor VMware Fusion. Canb't even scan for malware with iAntivirus; it crashes before the scan completes.
What's going on and what are my options?

HI,
There aren't any Mac viruses so you can rule that out.
Make sure your system software is up to date. Click your Apple Menu / Software Updates. If everything is up to date ...
Boot from your install disc, run Disk Utility to Verify and if necessary, Repair any errors on the startup disk.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let me refer you to an excellent website about maintaining Mac OS X. It also has great troubleshooting tips and ideas. The site is maintained by a regular contributor to the Apple Discussions, Dr. Smoke. The site is the X Lab.
Some of the things that you might try are Repairing Permissions from Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility. Resetting the PRAM. Also making sure that the Cron Scripts have actually been running on your Mac. The X Lab can instruct you in all of these ideas and more.

  • Dreamweaver 8.0.1 gone buggy!

After months of smooth-sailing with DW8, I am suddenly having
    three problems.
    1) Whenever I close the program, I lose my FTP settings for
the several Web sites I am working on. I re-enter the codes every
day, the save box is checked, but information evaporates as soon as
    I close down the program.
    2) Most recently, when I try to "save" a web page I have made
a new change on, it does not save the file properly. Instead, a new
window opens up saying "Save as Template." The only way I can
effectively save a page I have made changes to is to do a "save as"
and then replace the existing file.
    3) I have tried to download the updater to bring me to DW
8.0.2, but I am unable to do so. I am able to download the .exe
file, but when I try to open it, I get the following message:
"Contents cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to
run has been corrupted." I have tried downloading new .exe files
several times, but none of them will open for me.
Can anyone advise me as to a possible CAUSE of these
problems? Previously this week I had more general problems with my
computer freezing, no matter what program I was running. But that
problem seems to have resolved when I replaced my mouse. Have
checked for virus and spyware, and have found none.
Apart from the cause, is there a SOLUTION for these problems?
Would deleting Dreamweaver from my computer, then using the CD to
re-install it be a sensible way to go??
    Thanks. Phil in Boston

    Phil,
If you have been having other problems with your PC freezing
    etc, there may
well be other forces at work, not related to DW. Have you by
    chance
    installed Internet Explorer 7 lately?
If so, theres a technote on the Adobe site somewhere about
    it, you need to
get that 8.02 update working IIRC. Tried to contact Adobe to
    get ftp access
to the update? Tried to download it on another PC and
    transfer it to your
    dev. machine?

  • Right-click gone buggy?

When I right-click on a link, it sometimes gives me the wrong dialogue box; other times, 'open in new tab' will open a recently closed tab instead of the one I click. I also have to double right-click at times. What's causing this?

When i tap with 2 fingers, it triggers the primary click altough the settings aren't configured like that... really annoying...

  • My less than 5 month old imac 21.5 desktop is causing me some concern,it is slow to start, problems with bluetooth.problems with wi fi.whe its turned off i notice a graying in the four corners of the screen, this is i think the effects of overheating.

my imac is less than 5 months. old tommorow it goes to murcia for ¿repair?.a 25.1 1mac desktop is a formidable piece of workmanship but thatdoes not stop anything going wrong,as ive found out.in the last month it has begun to heat rapidly thus i think causing a graying in the 4 corners of the screen, this is ugly.as i keep my mac in pertfect grace ie free of dust and prints, also it freezes frequently and downright frustrating.has anyone else had similar problems.on a footnote i beleive apple care will come thru shining, but an answer to my question, wich is why in only 5 months has my imac gone wrong.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with your Mac, but just like pretty much everything else, things can go wrong.
The key is what Apple will do about it now that it has gone wrong. Because you are under warranty, contact AppleCare and explain the issues you are experiencing. There is a chance that your iMac may have to be sent in for repair.
My iMac has had issues since first bought in late 2009, in one form or another and has been repaired three times. AppleCare are going to replace the item sometime in the future, I have no idea when, but I have been without a working Mac for over three weeks now, actually it might be over four weeks.
As you said, AppleCare will sort the problem out for you, let's hope it's not a lengthy repair and they get you up and running quickly.

  • My iMac does not start up after Mavericks upgrade

    Hi,
I have a 2010 27" iMac with OSX.6.8 (if I remember well). Yesterday, I made a backup on an external drive with Time Machine, I downloaded Mavericks, proceeded to installation and when it restarted it got stuck on the grey screen.
I've tried every procedure from the Apple support, nothing worked.
Please help. I'm not living close to an Apple store and I'd love to figure this out by myself.
    Philippe

    Hi Philippe,
Has this iMac gone without AC power for extented periods?
If so likely the PRAM Battery is dead.
    Couple of things to try...
Hold alt key at bootup, what boot options show up?
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

    <Personal Information Edited By Host>

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Bondi iMac refuses to boot CDs, crazy workaround suggestion, any comments?

    Hi
Short question: can I bypass the CD reading process on my Bondi iMac entirely?
By 'cloning' genuine OS8 and/or OS9 CDs and/or Linux ppc distros onto a set of USB drives.
Then using these sticks to dd data onto a bootable partition of the hard drive using finnix (which is about the only distro I can get to work).
Boot from the new (and hopefully bootable) partition, and proceed with the install process from there; the target being a second partition.
Then just rearrange the partitions, tidy up and reclaim the space from the temp install, and there you have it, a working Bondi iMac which has effectively become a very lumpy netbook.
Anyone fancy spelling out in simple steps what to do?
Long explanation: So I bought a lime G3 iBook for spares. That worked out well, I sold the parts for more than it cost me, and I had some software left over. I should keep that; as I don't want to get into copyrighting difficulties, I thought.
So, I bought a tangerine iBook G3. Now by then I was starting to get intrigued. This seeemed like it could be saved, as a personal project. So I swapped the keyboard, battery, power supply, and even the memory for a while. Then I got into the software. Wouldn't load. Apart from finnix. So I put it up for sale - wiped - someone else's problem.
Except then I bought a Bondi iMac, same problem. CDs wouldn't load. Except for finnix, or I'd have given this up as a bad job ages ago...
So, I tried cleaning the opticals. No joy. I tried every OSX and linux distro I could lay my hands on. Nothing but finnix 86.1 worked.
I wondered about booting a net upgradeable distro on the USB, but it's USB1 and no firewire, so no can do.
But then, tonight, I think. What if... I can get (all of!) a genuine Apple CD contents onto the USB on a working CD-ROM, the USB onto a partition of the hard drive (using dd on finnix), boot the installer from the image partition, target the other partition for install, reboot, tidy up, reclaim space, and go about my business.
If that seems over-complicated, I know, I'm obsessive about old tech. And I'm very poor, so selling spare parts rather than buying them is key (or I'd just collect old CD-ROMs instead of the CDs to go in them). But when it comes to data I will not be beat, when I comes to electronics I can't change a lightbulb.
    What I've got:
    CD-R (lots)
Time (limited - my wife wants the iMac GONE or WORKING!)
A Bondi G3 iMac with a faulty (flakey - but very clean) CD-ROM.
A Tangerine G3 iBook with the same problem, but worse.
A working DVD/CD-R/W Windows XP machine.
A working Ubunbtu server with a CD-R (and with fairly tricky access - so no gymnastics please)
If you've got this far, you'll have had a similar problem.
I'm kind of at the meh, sell em, nah, fix em, erm, kind of stage. So sorry if I've wasted anyone's time.
Look forward to hearing from you.

I wondered about booting a net upgradeable distro on the USB, but it's USB1 and no firewire, so no can do.
The firmware doesn't support boot from a USB drive.

  • Spinning wheel of death suddenly in safari 7.1.3

Hi my Safari suddenly started spinning wheel of death today. It was fine this morning, but suddenly mid morning started with the spinning wheel of death. The only thing that happened was I had a pop up with some virus protection and a number to call. I couldn't get the pop up to go, so I force quit safari. Not sure if this is anything to do with it. (iTunes also gone buggy)
I restarted safari and mac, but problems still there. I downloaded etrecheck and attached is the report

  • ILL 10 selection tool not working

    I'm working in Illustrator 10 on a Mac, 10.3.9.
When I use the selection tool and click on an object or text block I no longer get the bounding box. If I select a circle it is selected as if I were using the direct selection tool. I can no longer scale an object using the selection tool or decrease the size of a text box. Any insight into this would be great. I don't know if I accidentally reset one of the preferences or if something has gone buggy with the program.
    thanks in advance.

  • Group Names Do Not Appear on iPhone

Yesterday, an anomaly occurred on my iPhone 3G (version 3.1.3) regarding accessing Contacts. I could not access the pages showing ALL contacts, nor could I even move off page of that one Group, which was the latest Group I had accessed. I was confined into seeing only Group's contacts.
On the theory that the Contacts software on the iPhone got corrupted, I went through all the trouble-shooting steps recommended by David Pogue in his book, iPhone: The Missing Manual, including resetting the iPhone's settings, and eventually doing a complete restore of my iPhone's firmware and software via iTunes.
The restoration fixed one problem, but there seems to be another problem with Contacts that I do not understand. After the restoration, I can now access the complete list of my individual contacts. That's a good thing. But when I click the button to move to the Groups page, the Groups page is blank, even though my Address Book has about ten groups that it should be sending to MobileMe for syncing.
As a test to force a change in my Calendar, my Contacts and my Groups lists, I added a new event, a new "test" contact, and two new "test" groups. Then I synced up my computer with MobileMe. The new names for the test groups show up fine on the MobileMe website, so syncing from my computer to the web is working OK. But, while the new event and the new contact show up fine on the iphone, the Groups page on the iPhone still is blank.
Anyone have an insight into this problem? Am I overlooking something here? Or has something gone buggy on my iPhone?

While waiting for a reply, I telephoned the local Apple Store, and I explained the problem, asking if I could get help over the phone, or if I had to bring my phone in. The person I spoke with was most helpful, and she solved my problem over the phone.
She explained that, when an iPhone is restored via the backup saved by iTunes to the source computer, the restoration process does not bring an iPhone back to its exact previous state all by itself. In my case, even though some syncing was occurring via my MobileMe account, I needed to add that account back onto my iPhone via the Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > MobileMe commands.
As soon as I had completed adding my MobileMe account email address and password, full syncing privileges were restored. The Groups page, showing all of my Group Names, together with the right-arrows leading to the contacts in each group, are now correctly showing up again.
I do not know what may have happened yesterday to cause the glitch, but the restoration of my iPhone via iTunes, and the adding back of my MobileMe account registration information, has solved the problem.

  • Release product serial number for final cut studio

i bought an imac. gonna take it back. installed final cut studio. how can i unlock the key for the next computer? do i have to contact apple to release it?

You can uninstall all of the FCS components from the iMac before you return it by using this: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm
When you install FCS on the new computer, use the serial number that was included with the FCS package - it is on stickers affixed to the front cover of the booklet titled "Installing Your Software."

  • SMART "failing" changes to "verified"--Is this normal?

A couple of days ago my PowerBook's hard drive began freezing up. I checked the SMART status, and sure enough, it was reported as "failing."
So, I called AppleCare. I was told to back up my data (if possible) and then reinstall the software to see if the trouble continued.
I did a clean install and, lo and behold, SMART status is now listed as "verified."
Is it normal for a drive's SMART status to be listed as failing simply because the software has gone buggy and a clean install is needed? Should I trust it now that it says "verified"?
    I'm concerned...very concerned.

    EddieC...
Actually, everything seemed to be fine prior to getting the "Failing" message. No spinning beachballs, slowdowns or other problems EXCEPT for the "buzzing while titled" noise coming from the hard drive. That problem--well-documented in these forums--had been with my PowerBook for several months. It was when the buzz became apparent even when the PowerBook wasn't being titled or otherwise moved that the drive went south.
There's a happy ending to this story, though: AppleCare's shipper picked up my machine on Sunday, AppleCare fixed it on Monday, and I just got it back a few minutes ago (Tuesday morning in Japan). The hard drive has been replaced and they also reported fixing a couple of internal cables. So, all is well!
The only disappointment--they replaced the old drive with the same 4200-rpm model. I was hoping to get a slightly faster drive! No complaints, though--AppleCare came through with flying colors.

  • Why is contact sync from iphone or ipad to local iMac address book gone?

An option for syncing contacts from iphone or ipad to iMac seems to be gone.  From searching other posts on this topic, I see where contact sync is now "through iCloud" but is this the EXCLUSIVE choice for syncing contacts?  In other words, there is no longer any sync of contacts NOT through iCloud; I cannot sync contacts from my iPhone to my iMac without it all being stored in the cloud.
This is absurd.  My iCloud was hacked (not a password issue on my iMac or any local trojan/etc there are support threads about this) and tons of spam sent to my contacts when I used to sync through the cloud.  I turned off iCloud sync for contacts and opted instead to sync from phone to mac and from iPad to mac and this was working just fine, keeping me nice and updated every day no matter where I modified any contacts.
Now it seems that is no longer possible.  Is this by design?  Why on earth was this removed?  Is it a "feature" of these new products to remove working sync methods and force everything through the cloud??

The ability to sync contacts, calendar and browser bookmarks directly from a Mac running Mavericks to an IOS device via USB or WiFi has indeed been removed. Synching through iCloud, Exchange, WebDAV or a similar cloud service is the only option now. You can comment to Apple in this issue via their feedback page, if you wish:
