IMac, gray screen and beeping.

5 or 6 year old iMac running leopard. Don't know version, but always updated. I downloaded skype last night. Everything working fine. This morning, while going through Skype info and buttons, got a mask saying "need to restart" or "need to refresh" (not sure which). I had no mouse or keyboard controls. Held power button down to shut off. Restarted, then gray screen and constant beeping. Tried several times, same result. Unplugged from power then restarted, same result. Help?
(working from my laptop)

Sounds like you got a kernel panic. A kernel panic is usually, but not always, caused by hardware, with memory a leading cause. Once you're able to reboot, if they continue, see this kernel panic FAQ: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
On the gray screen and beeping, if your iMac has an Intel processor, see this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341?viewlocale=en_US .  If it has a PowerPC processor, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547 . If you're not sure, Intel-based iMacs were introduced in early 2006.

  • Stuck on gray screen and beeping

Yesterday my macbook was fine, i shut it down and today i tryed to switch it on, and it made that cute power on sound, so far so good, but then the screen turns kind of light gray, no icons, just plain color, and the thing starts gooing like "beep, beep" every 3 seconds or so.
No matter how many times i switch it on and off, all the times i get the same response.
I have done absolutely nothing different from what i am used to do, did not install any new programs nor downloaded any weird stuff. The last thing that i recall as unusual was an system update, i am not quite sure but i think it was 2 days before the problem started, so i dont really think the update was the problem ...
anyone got similar experiences and found solutions?

Sounds like a logic board failure or some other low level hardware problem, and to be honest, if that is the case, no matter what you do, or if by some miracle it boots, you should have no faith in it whatsoever. Unfortunately is sounds like you've just won a trip to the apple store. Is it 3 short beeps three long beeps, three short beeps? If you describe the beeps it could give us a better idea as to how to help. The only other possible thing I could think of is a firmware corruption, but to the best of my knowledge, that still requires a trip out. Sorry for the grim prognosis, best of luck.

If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, then from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
    Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.

  • I restarted my iMac and all I have is a gray screen and a color wheel .

I restarted my iMac about an hour ago and all I have is a gray screen and a rotating color wheel.

Follow the steps @ > Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • My iMac freezes at start. I just get the gray screen and apple symbol.

I turned it off and on and then nothing. Just gray screen and spinning wheel. I also see the mouse pointer.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Remove each DIMM and then re-install per the instructions.

  • 2007 iMac Gray Screen After Boot - Can't do anything

    Hello,
I have a 2007 iMac. When I turn it on, I hear the boot chime and see the light gray screen, and then it goes to a darker gray screen. It won't get past the dark gray screen, and the screen doesn't show any icons or anything. It's just a solid dark gray. I've tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, starting in safe mode, etc., and nothing seems to be making a difference.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, and how I can fix it?
    Thanks in advanced!

I've tried all of those things. I don't believe the peripherals are causing the problem. I forgot to mention that I have it connected to a TV via VGA adapter. The iMac's monitor doesn't work.

    Help appreciated.

Well, this is back with vengeance.
I've tried removing the Telestream software and the BlackBerry software and I still get a blank screen randomly. The last one happened last night when I tried to download AppCleaner to make sure all files from the above programs had been removed. As soon as I clicked 'download' it went blank and froze.
This is persistent, and the annoying thing is that I can't get it to restart when I want. I tried pulling out the power cord for a while, several PRAM resets, Safe Mode, try to get into recovery disk to check the drive, etc, etc.
Sometimes a few PRAM resets seem to work, other times it will go into the recovery disk, but most of the time it just seems to randomly boot up again after not working for ages. I can't find a pattern and I've tried this many times.
At the moment I can't get it working. I've just removed some Crucial RAM that was installed to see if that helped, but to no avail.
Bugging the life out of me.

If so, I would disconnect from power and let it sit until it powers OFF by itself. Then try starting it or connecting it to power (if the battery is drained).

    Hello,
I downloaded the "time machine update" and now my macbook pro will not boot, it stops at a gray screen and cursor.

    Any ideas on anything else?

    Thanks

The startup disk may need repairing ...
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery
