IMac hanging unresponsive during Yosemite 10.2.2 update
This update began automatically while I was on vacation and has been hanging, with blank screen for hours. Although the hard drive seems to be running when I press the keyboard space bar, the machine is unresponsive to Command-L or any other input. Help, please!
Press the Power button down until the computer shuts off. Wait 10 seconds then reboot. If it's working then:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Try the update once more.

My iMac hangs when installing Yosemite.
My iMac hangs when "installing on HD about 22 mins remaining" I did not check to see if this iMac can support Yosemite. What do I do now?
You can try using the full offline Reader installer from

My iMacs (2006 + late 2007) occasionally lockup during shutdown. After the desktop icons are gone but the desktop photo remains with the spinning pinwheel. Eventually I force a shutdown by holding down the power button. On restart, everything is back to normal. Sometimes I have waited for 2 hours and the machine has not shut down - only gone to sleep.
Same problem here, but it hangs all the time, not only 10-20% of the shutdown. I let it there for about 2 hours, nothing changed.
I have no idea if this is time machine related, but if it is, it's a bug. Apple can't wan't me to check the sys prefs every time i shut down my iMac...
By the way it's a two week old iMac which replaced my older one. I moved all the data by reinstalling leopard on the new iMac and telling the installer to rebuilt the system from the time machine data of my old iMac... Maybe something went wrong there. -
Intel iMac stuck during Yosemite install
Hi everyone. I downloaded Yosemite and began the install process about six hours ago. Everything seemed to be working. I have a gray screen with a status bar in the middle, showing the progress of the install. But that screen has been stuck for hours. Should I attempt a hard reboot? I'm afraid doing so in the middle of the OS upgrade will render the computer inoperable. Advice please!
Thanks.
TomOK. I did the hard reboot, and it turns out the computer had finished installing Yosemite and was actually hanging up during the power-up. (It was stuck on the gray screen.) I disconnected a USB drive that often causes me problems during restarts, and the iMac is up and running with the new OS. Whew. Now to see if Yosemite makes my life easier ... or...

IMac 27" unusable w/ Yosemite
Hello everyone,
I'm barely writing this, being interrupted every 30 seconds with the spinning beach ball. I have iMac 27" (Late 2013) with Yosemite. Since the day I bought this mac I first had issues with itunes playing songs, it would stop during playback, I would have spinning beachball and after few seconds it would work again (that was on Mavericks). After update problem seemed gone, until Yosemite. Upgrade to the latest one 10.10.1 made my life miserable. Long story short, computer is unusable. Spinning wheel is triggered by random actions, like typing, listening to music, playing video on youtube, writing a document, and now it got to the point where it will jsut be on standby with nothing opened and still every now and then have the beach ball spinning. I looked into Console and had several "kernel disk0s2: I/O error". after running Disk Utility, Apple Hardware Test and S.M.A.R.T. result is that everyting, according to these programs, is ok. I don't know where to look anymore, I seem to have all of the symptoms and system works the best in Safe Mode, from which I7m writing right now, with spinning ball still showing up but not constantly as in normal mode. Console is giving me right now lots of logs "watchdog_daemon: cannot initialize daemon service", don't know if that is of any importance
here is what EtreCheck says, and thanks alot for any kind of help

Thanks for the help, and I hope this helps to others that might have the same issue -
Spotlight estimates 400 hours remaining. iMac completely unresponsive.
So, I've been having all types of problems with my iMac and finally had to resort to a SuperDuper! restore. I cloned the iMac drive from the backup, rebooted, ran permissions, etc. So, I can understand that Spotlight would need to index my drive again. I started fine, saying 30m, then 45m, then 2h, then settled back to a reasonable 45m. Until it got about 2/3 of the way through. Then it was 2h, 3h, 5h, ... 24h, 25h, 48h, 72h, 81h, 93h, 99h and counting (445 hours now).
The biggest problem has been that the iMac is almost completely unresponsive during this time. Can someone point me in the direction of a log or something?
Message was edited by: Xian RinpocheSounds like Spotlight is indexing both your Internal and External HD's, and you need to temporarily prevent Spotlight from searching one or both drives.
1. Go to: *System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy* and click the + box > select *External HD* from the list of Devices > click the Choose button.
2. Do the same and add the *Internal HD* to the Privacy list, at least temporarily until you get all the disk activity to settle down.
3. Then after your confident that the restore to the Internal HD is working properly and everything checks out. Then enable the Spotlight Search feature for the Internal HD by removing it from the list and let it complete before allowing it to Search the External HD
Note: normally I only allow Spotlight to Search my Internal HD and do not allow any searching of any my External HD's.

I can't set up iCloud drive on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite
I can't set up iCloud drive on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite - iPhone and iPad are updated but both say my iMac isn't (even though it is running Yosemite).
My iMac is OS X Yosemite 10.10 (14A389), memory is 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and storage capacity is 273.64 free of 999.35 GB.
When i go to System Preferences and click on iCloud. The iCloud Drive section is greyed out and says setting up and a spinning pin wheel. It stays like this the whole time. I have tried restarting the computer. i amanita sure what else to do to make it work. Any suggestion would be great.I found another way to correct this...
1) Select Message, then go to Preferences,
2) a window will appear with 3 options, General, Accounts, Audio Video, don't be surprised when you see a video of yourself, your camera just turned on.
3) Select Accounts (you may have several here)
4) Select the account that has "iMessage" under the account name. This may likely be your Apple ID ****@me.com
5) Look at what is checked under the "You can be reached for messages at:"
6) Select the one account (or more if you like) and deselect the others
7) Close the window and the problem goes away.
I'm not longer getting my sons iMessages. -
How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?
How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?
Hi,
Open the Messages app.
Go to the Preferences item in the app's Menu.
Select the account pane in the Preferences.
Each active account should have a tick in the Enable this Account box.
This can be unticked.
This will stop accounts logging in but will not stop the app Launching in certain circumstances.
First of all check the app is Quit before shutting down the computer.
The fact the app is open even if all windows are hidden can cause the app to restart when you Start up the computer.
Messages is a Multiple window app and using the red button on the top left of a window only closes that window and does not Quit the app.
Also check the System Preferences > Users and Groups > your account > Login Items tab.
This will list items that are set to Start up when the computer does.
I have a couple of External Drive on other computers, some Anti Virus software and the common iTunes Helper plus an old version of TextExpander that will work if I launch the Preference Pane this way.

Updated my IMAC from Lion to Mountain Lion. Processor 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 Mag 1067 MHz DDR3. Now (usually when I am running two software items) my IMAC hangs up about once a day or so. It seems like a short 1 sec repeat. At that point the only way to stop it is to shut down using the main power button. Is anyone else having this problem? I never had a problem until I upgraded. I'm 99% sure it must be in the operating system. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Has Apple found this glitch in Mountain Lion and will they be coming out with a fix?
I was having a similar issue, my 27" iMac would lose the Internet connection, but not the wifi, later I'd find that the machine had restarted giving me a notice that there'd been a kernel panic. It was happening persistently after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I used CCleaner to clear caches and now two days later I've had no problems.
I'm relieved that I didn't have to resort to more complex solutions. -
IMac stuck "restarting" during 10.9.2 update
During my 10.9.2 update, my imac is stuck "Restarting" for one hour. I'm going to let it sit a bit longer, anyone else come across this?
I just came across this thread, two similar experiences.@Erik
I wonder 'try'?
Why do you say 'try', whats this.
In my opinion trying is not something you do every day with apple updates, right.
I mean, apple update is not something to doubt about, 'apple' hello!
Is there a difference in the regular App store OTA update and this combo update?
I had about the same issues here, that LS mentioned these connection attempts.
I had weird internet failing issues in my LAN at home, even other devices where blocked from internet, really weird. Pulled modem power several times, internet was back for a while, but after few minutes of slow browsing internet was down again. LAN itself seem to be in order, could still connect to other media on LAN, but not to WAN. Did disconnect power of modem routine again, internet up...
Even when connection to outside was down (several devices) I was able to get from WAN to LAN by means of my cell phone, data connection, port forwarding at home... So it seemed all outgoing traffic was broken somehow..
Why would an official update connect with facebook twitter etc, this is the main question here I think.
So I was a bit desperate and couldn't pinpoint the internet outages.
This all was just after the 10.9.2 ota update.
I followed your 'try' advice, now it seems my MBA doesn't break my internet connection anymore.
Thanks, it 'behaves' correctly I think, it needs some time still, just did the update.
Power comes with knowledge, so why the trying, is this experience, your gut, or something in higher places, what?
Cheers I. -
I have an imac running 10.6.8, and want to update to Yosemite, but am unable to. What can I do?
hi alan i run a business on ebay selling photos and negs. i recently installed yosemite and it locked my entire library on iphoto. when i try to download the app to free it from ishop it tells me there is a fault with the app and my iphoto is frozen. i am basically out of work and finding it very hard to find someone who can help me unlock it.. look at the things being said about this yosemite locking this.....freezing that... be very careful if you need your business for your livelyhood. the actual performance is really good.....better display ...much faster and well presented but is it worth having parts of your compy put out of action i possibly think not. i am new to this community so hopefully someone reading this may be able to advise us both.....paul

Work-around for flash player hangs/freezes during initialisation...
Hello all,
Are you also facing the problem that the flash player hangs/freezes during execution of an xcelsius file? Try if the following work-around works also for you.
I am (was) facing the same problem: a swf file about 1474 kb with many components, generated with Xcelsius 5.3.2.0., trying to view with flash player 10.1.82.76. Did also hang/freezed! The file was originally build with version 5.3.0 and worked o.k. then...
The work-around which works for me is the following: I had all my components organized in groups. After ungrouping them all (which I think is a major drawback) and exporting it to swf, the report works! File size is more or less the same...
Maybe you can give this work-around a try for your own work....
So I think the SAP/Adobe bug has something to do with grouping of components or grouped components build in an earlier version of Xcelsius 2008... The following test that I will perform is ungrouping the components and then re-grouping them again in version 5.3.2.0....
Greetings
Erik-Jan VriensThank you for sharing this. Had a similar problem before and did some tinkering around with the file and all of a sudden it worked again. Fair bet it was exactly that as well.
In general Xcelsius performance goes down the drain if you start using many components. It is to be expected, somewhat, I guess. Various bugs also pop up because components do not always seem to play nice.
One thing I have found as well is that if you are doing a waterfall approach of constructing with a bunch of iterations in the implementation phase, you may end up with a bunch of components that were there early on. Sometimes they start messing up over time, because you've been playing with the data below or with the chart itself. E.g. on line charts label start distorting, or the frames flicker. In radiobutton boxes the boxes are not aligned properly. Checkbox labels are clipped at the end until you hover over them etc..
Solution: remove the components, add anew. If not too many components with a tough spreadsheet below, export Excel, start a new. -
IMac hanging caused by Safari (I think)
Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari.
Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button.
Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.
In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted.
Problem is common to all users.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
My iPhone 4 has become unresponsive during the latest update I have a progress bar about half way through the update and it hasn't moved for about an hour can anyone help???
Hey Ali.M27,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with your iPhone during an iOS update. If your issues persist, you may need to restore your device in recovery mode:

I’m using an iMac running Os X Yosemite, Photoshop CS5 Extended, R2880 Epson printer In the Print Settings dialog box, I can’t select Color, Advanced BW or Grayscale unless I select “Printer Manages Color”. The pull down menu is grayed out. Even with “printer manages color” the tif or jpg image comes out in color overlaid with black. (See example - printer1. image on left is close to what it should be). Photoshop has no updates pending. I’ve downloaded the latest Epson driver which was working fine just before the problem occurred
Is your Photoshop CS5 updated to 12.1?
Are you on Yosemite 10.10.1 or Yosemite 10.10.2?
Did you apply the recent Epson software 2.1.9 update?
What type of file is it (file format)? What bit depth and what color space?
BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too.
