IMac hangs on spinning color wheel when coming out of screen saver

Since updating to the latest version 10.5.5 my iMac hangs when coming out of screen saver mode with the spinning color wheel and I have to do a hard reboot.
I did some searching and it looks like this was also a problem back with and earlier version of 10.5
I use the pictures screen saver.
Anyone else have this problem since the last update??

I was so spoiled from not having to do anything with my iMac but enjoy it that it never occurred to me a little maintenance would be required.
Still compared to the Windows PC's I have around that I have to try and maintain once a day I think the Mac is a killer machine....
You should attend to your iMac. Even the best machines need periodic attention.
Like an iceberg, most of Leopard is "under the ocean" or as we say, "under the hood." There is an extremely powerful BSD OS down there and it is really that, not Leopard per se, that need an occasional "tweak."
Actually there are automatic routines that do much of the hidden maintenance but permissions repair is not one of them.
Again, you do not need to run permissions repair every day. Not even every month, but it's best to do it anytime you install new software - before and after installing the software.
Some, but not all of the issues you see here are the result of not maintaining the computer.

  • Screen goes black when coming out of screen saver. HP Pavilion,p7-1414 desktop, windows 8

the monitor shows the windows 8 screen with the apps, then the screen saver will come on. Then when I try to bring it out of the screen saver mode the screen goes black and nothing I do will get it to go back to the windows 8 screen. Then the mouse pointer will disappear. So I end up having to shut down the computer using the power button. If I have the screen set up for the old style windows 7 and it goes into the screen saver and I bring it back there's no problem.

    Hello fleamarketlady,
Your computer goes black when it comes out of sleep mode some times.
Make sure that you are only using one cable to connect the monitor to the computer.
Open up command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.
This will scan the system files and correct any errors that it can.
Here is a link to command prompt.
When you go to open command prompt, right click and run as administrator.
If you are still having the problem you can perform a system refresh.
This will uninstall windows 8 and reinstall it without affecting your personal information.
Here is a link that will walk you through the steps for a refresh.
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

  • Why is the color wheel always coming out?

I recently just bought a macbook (Intel 2.0ghz, 1gb RAM, 160G HD), coz my friends have macbooks and they run awesome. So I figured, I buy a macbook and it will run awesome. I'm starting to regret buying it. I opened the box, and it was ok, color wheel would come out once in a while. Now, even after a RAM upgrade (4gb), my macbook still keeps popping out that color wheel, everytime I'm browsing the internet to even when I'm just playing movies. I already took it to the mac store in short hills for the to see if there is anything wrong. I asked them to run a hardware diagnostics on it to see if there's any hardware problems, but they told me it's fine. I told them it's not coz I see how other macbooks run and that's what I thought what I was buying. Anyway, any information to help me out would be great. It just always seems like that color wheel keep popping out and my computer is always running slow. I reinstalled the OS several times already to make sure it's not software related. Any suggestions?

    HI,
    lets try simply:
The spinningwheel is an indication that your computer waits for some application to due a certain task. that can be loading a certain page in a browser, or that can be loading lots of info into the memory. both of this take time. So the diagnostics is meant to find out, which of your applications needs time, and for which reason, and then get the "therapy" to cure it. For example, if you load photodirectories of many thousand large pictures, or several dvd movies or games, then your MB's memory is overloaded, and has to write things to disk, which takes a lot of time.
As JasonFear said, go to your Login and make sure that no application is running at Login. Then restart your MB.
After restart, there should be no application in the Dock which is highlighted with a little point or similar, except Finder and Dock.
If there are other applications, click on them and quit them ("Cmd-q").
Now there should be no spinning wheel. right? if not, stop here and report back!
if things are fine, then start your browser. i understand, this is Safari. What kind of internet connection do you have? DSL (or ADSL)? what speed? are you connected by a wi-fi, or by a cable? just to know, so that we get the right diagnostics.
Still no spinning wheel after Safari has started and loaded the start-up page? If spinning wheel, tell us. if not, continue.
Surf a bit to places where you previously have experienced the spnnwheel.
are you playing games via internet? these can be timeconsuming (due to lengthy downloads) and will cause the computer to wait, so the spnnwl comes up. Tell us!
If everything works fine , continue. start the next of you favourite applications. iMusic? some DVD games? tell us which application you have started when the spnnwl comes up.
Please, do this, as we need more info to help you. N any case, you MB should not be the problem. Most likely is the problem in the way, how you use it, and by using it in the most efficient way will make out of it a terrible little machine!
    Cheers, Thomas

  • Spinning color wheel when try to open iphoto

Please help:  when I open iPhoto, the colored wheel spins and spins.  What to do??  Is there a simple solution, as I am not very computer literate.

The test resulted in a spinning wheel in the new, blank library, too.
    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot and try to launch iPhoto again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For  Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

  • Spinning beach ball when waking up from screen saver or sleep

A few months ago, my ancient (Quicksilver G4) Mac started giving me a spinning beach ball for a few seconds every time I wake it up from sleep or from the screen saver. It lasts anywhere from about 5 to 20 seconds. It never used to do this. The problem has continued despite a recent upgrade form 10.3.9 to 10.4.10. Repairing permissions and resetting PRAM hasn't helped. Any ideas?

Well... I tried many of those things in the search results, and nothing changed initially... i.e. after changing desktop backgrounds (which is all it seemed to take on my mini), and then changing passwords, I continued to not be prompted for my password until I restarted. Logging out might've worked as well, but I just went gung ho and went right for the restart.

  • Spinning color wheel when accessing iTunes and iPods Need Help

I hope somebody can offer some help. I have an iMac G5 running Leopard 10.5.6 and the latest version of iTunes and have several iPods ranging from an old iPod photo up to my newest 160 GB classic purchased about a week ago. My iTunes library is stored on a LaCie 1 TB external USB2 drive.
On to my issue. When I access iTunes I often get the spinning wheel but especially often when I try to hook up one of my iPods to sync anything. For instance I will hook up an iPod and then click on the books tab of the iPod in iTunes to select what to sync. I will get the spinning wheel for several minutes before it finally opens the tab. When it finally does, it let's me select what I want but then if I they hit apply button, I get the wheel again for several minutes before it finally syncs. It is driving me nuts. At first I thought it was my new iPod but it does it on my others as well.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • MBP and LED Cinema Display Color Washed Out After Screen Saver

When coming out of screen saver, often the color profile on either my LED Cinema Display or the MBP LCD is messed up. The color looks washed out. Simply going to the Color tab in the Displays preference pane fixes this.
How do I get this to stop?
    Thanks,
    Bobby

My 13" MBP has now started to do the same thing as described. The thing is, it has never done this since I bought it in late July 2009. I have iWork installed, Firefox, Skype, and Pixelmator. I may have a clue, however, for the Apple people: my MBP never did this until last night and this morning. The only thing I changed yesterday was removing the 2 gig of memory and installing 4 gig. I also tried the translation widget for the first time.

  • My imac keeps giving me a spinning color wheel and hangs up the machine for a few seconds and sometimes minutes. What could be the program and how can i get rid of it?

My imac keeps giving me a spinning color wheel when i open and close applications and also when I am typing in programs. It happens and spins and then releases. I have done the following: Run virus software and found no problems, I have reinstalled the operating system, I have reloaded Iworks software, I have checked system prefrerences and still the problem continues. What could the problem be and how can I correct the problem?

"the spinning wait cursor is displayed automatically by the window server when an application cannot handle all of the events it receives. If an application does not respond for about 2 to 4 seconds, the spinning wait cursor appears."

  • MacBook Pro with spinning Color Wheel - and Java?

My MacBook Pro has recently developed a spinning color wheel when it's "thinking". At the same time, my system seems slower now.  I have more than 60% storage still available.  Not sure if that has anything to do with it.  I live in a rather large town and have Comcast Xfinity which is satisfactory and has never gone out.
My other question is regarding JAVA.  Is it necessary?  What's it for?  I constantly get messages that Java need updating …is this something I can remove?  If so, how do I do this safely and completely?
    Thank you!

  • While using Firefox when I click the mouse or when typing like this I get the Mac spinning color wheel and any action is delayed about 10 seconds.

I'm on an iMac, 10.4, Firefox 3.6.20 and the problem is occurring with greater frequency. When I installed 3.6.20, it ran perfectly for a short time, but now the spinning color wheel happens on almost every mouse click and it makes using Firefox an impossibility. I tried the Apple installed Safari and had no difficulties. It does not occur when I use Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 either. I will appreciate any help because I rely on Firefox. Thanks.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

When I click on the proccess and quite, the CPUusage goes way down. Problem is that I have to then log back in to e-mail. What can I do to eliminate this proble.  thanks

How much FREE RAM do you have when this occurs. It's easy to tell, when it beach balls open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) click the System Memory tab and note how much FREE RAM is listed. If it's 500MB or less it's time for a RAM upgrade.

  • When I open iphoto, I only get the spinning color wheel

When I open iphoto, the window is blank and I just get the spinning color wheel.  I have OSX 10.6.8.  The last time I used iphoto I had deleted over 100GB of photos (they were backed up to an external hard drive). Now I just get the spinning wheel.  I have to force quit to shut it down.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    TD
