IMac hangs (sometimes) on wake up

Hello everyone
Over the last month or so, my iMac has sometimes started hanging on wake up.  The mouse still moves and I can click on icons to open programmes but they just bounce and never open.  I can force them to shut down and I can close any programmes I had left open.  It will not go on the wireless network when this happens nor will it let me turn wireless off and on.  I have to do a hard shut down to make it work again.  Normal shut down just results in it sitting doing nothing.
I copied the system log from this morning's hang up.  I have had my computer for over a year now but some of the inner workings of Macs are still very strange to me (I was a PC user before) so please be patient and do not assume that I will understand a reply.
Thank you for your help!
PS I have removed my name from some of the log entries so if a gmail bit looks funny, that's why.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.

  • HT1148 Installed Mountain Lion - Now my IMAC hangs in a short loop (1 sec) at least once every other day.

Updated my IMAC from Lion to Mountain Lion. Processor 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 Mag 1067 MHz DDR3. Now (usually when I am running two software items) my IMAC hangs up about once a day or so. It seems like a short 1 sec repeat. At that point the only way to stop it is to shut down using the main power button. Is anyone else having this problem? I never had a problem until I upgraded. I'm 99% sure it must be in the operating system. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Has Apple found this glitch in Mountain Lion and will they be coming out with a fix?

I was having a similar issue, my 27" iMac would lose the Internet connection, but not the wifi, later I'd find that the machine had restarted giving me a notice that there'd been a kernel panic. It was happening persistently after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I used CCleaner to clear caches and now two days later I've had no problems.
I'm relieved that I didn't have to resort to more complex solutions.

  • IMac hanging caused by Safari (I think)

Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari.
Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button.
Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.
In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted.
Problem is common to all users.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Why does my A to D hang sometimes?

I have been using a VXIpc-850 (200 MHz) controller and a VM2616 DAC with good success.  Now I switched to a VXIpc-872B (1.26 GHz) controller and I get a hang sometimes when I do an instrument write.  Here is the process I use: 1. Reset instrument, set voltage range and triggering.  2. Send data to instrument.  3. Write to instrument with following string: STATPER:COND?.  4. Read instrument.  5. Write to instrument with the following string: REG:ADDR 0,(@1).  Most of the time it hangs at the first write (STATPER:COND?), sometimes it hangs at the reset, sometimes it hangs at the last write, sometimes it proceeds without errors and gives me the data I expect.  I updated the drivers and added delays in various places to account for the faster processor but I suspect there is something else.
    Does anybody have any clues?
    Kendrick Krause
PS. That is supposed to be STAT colon OPER:COND?.  It is interpreting the colon O as a smiley face.

    Hello John,
    THANKS for the response.
I have tried adding delays up to 1 full second and boolean indicators all over the place to track the flow.
Still works with the other controller.
Ooops, forgot to mention that old controller and code is LV 5.1 - Win'98, new controller and code is LV 7.1 - WinXP. (yes, re-compiled)
Still, I don't suspect the code because of the "somtimes it hangs".
I can run it over and over several times with no problem, then... stuck.
70% of the time it hangs at the first write the other 30% is spread between Reset, the second Write and Read, once it hung on a config.
I haven't given up adding delays, I'll dig deeper but the system and its software are not mine.
Will keep you posted, unless you or somone else has any other ideas.
    Thanks,
    Kendrick

  • IMac hangs on spinning color wheel when coming out of screen saver

Since updating to the latest version 10.5.5 my iMac hangs when coming out of screen saver mode with the spinning color wheel and I have to do a hard reboot.
I did some searching and it looks like this was also a problem back with and earlier version of 10.5
I use the pictures screen saver.
Anyone else have this problem since the last update??

Still compared to the Windows PC's I have around that I have to try and maintain once a day I think the Mac is a killer machine....
You should attend to your iMac. Even the best machines need periodic attention.
Like an iceberg, most of Leopard is "under the ocean" or as we say, "under the hood." There is an extremely powerful BSD OS down there and it is really that, not Leopard per se, that need an occasional "tweak."
Actually there are automatic routines that do much of the hidden maintenance but permissions repair is not one of them.
Again, you do not need to run permissions repair every day. Not even every month, but it's best to do it anytime you install new software - before and after installing the software.
Some, but not all of the issues you see here are the result of not maintaining the computer.

  • My Satellite L650 sometimes hang sometimes

    Hello,
My Satellite L650 sometimes hang sometimes, most of time it happens when im gaming, the sounds "hangs" it makes wierd sounds when it does and also my video graphics are laggy. Never had it on any other pc/laptop before :S
    How can I fix this?
    Greetings,
    Arnie

    Hi buddy,
Can you post a little bit more details? Also some information about operating system would be nice, nobody knows what you use. Do you use a Linux distribution?
If you play games I would recommend high performance power plan as as*** already wrote. It offers best option and performance for games and other high CPU usage programs.
Furthermore keep your system clean: uninstall programs that you dont need and disable start up programs that you dont need. This can improve the performance a lot!
But you must understand its very hard to say something about sometimes errors.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previo' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • IMac is slow to wake from sleep, or doesn't wake at all sometimes

    hi guys
I have a mac from late last year, i have updated software to 10.8.3, and found another update to help wake the mac up.  I have enabled hot corners, so you can you the mac to sleep by touching the corner, then swiping the track pad to wake....this will work for about 15 mins or so.  If you leave the screen for 2-4 hours, approx half the time you need to push the button on the back to start it back up.  Sometimes you will swipe the track pad, it will wake but the keyboard won't be working.  So then have to restart and all is well again.
    Am i missing something?

Have you read for possible solutions over in the "More Like This" thread over here?----------------------->

  • IMac hangs before login screen - sometimes powers down

    Hi,
On Thursday night my iMac hung when I woke it up and tried to use it. I couldn't remember the last reboot, so tried that first.
When it came back up, it showed me the blue screen but the login window never appeared.
I tried booting in safe mode with the same result, and on the second attempt it simply cut the power and switched off.
Suspecting the hard drive, I booted into single user mode to run fsck, but this failed.
On advice from the apple phone support people, I tried to "Archive & Install" from DVD, but when I start the install disk it tells me that OSX can't be installed on the target volume.
Finally, in the installer, I tried running Disk Utility, and all of the options fail, including, Verify, Repair and Permissions.
Is my Hard Drive dead? Is there anything else that I can try?
    Many Thanks,
    Taff

Hi, thanks but this is not a fresh install... I've tried the other startup option and still no joy.
Next; I tried to run the iMac in target disk mode and connect it to my Mac Mini, but althought the disk showed in disk utility, it did not show on the desktop and the chap on the phone advised that this meant that it was inaccessible.
What I do have is an external USB drive with a full time machine history, so I am currently trying to restore from this after booting from the Leopard DVD... As described here:
    http://duncandavidson.com/2008/01/restoring-from-time-machine.html
It's been showing me the "restoring from backup" message for a few hours now - fingers crossed it is working away and not hanging?!

  • IMac hangs up during shutdown

My iMacs (2006 + late 2007) occasionally lockup during shutdown. After the desktop icons are gone but the desktop photo remains with the spinning pinwheel. Eventually I force a shutdown by holding down the power button. On restart, everything is back to normal. Sometimes I have waited for 2 hours and the machine has not shut down - only gone to sleep.

Same problem here, but it hangs all the time, not only 10-20% of the shutdown. I let it there for about 2 hours, nothing changed.
I have no idea if this is time machine related, but if it is, it's a bug. Apple can't wan't me to check the sys prefs every time i shut down my iMac...
By the way it's a two week old iMac which replaced my older one. I moved all the data by reinstalling leopard on the new iMac and telling the installer to rebuilt the system from the time machine data of my old iMac... Maybe something went wrong there.

  • IMac Hangs at loading screen or loads into os but crashes alot

I have had my iMac for 7 months now. This is the 1st problem I have had.
Sometimes it will hang on the loading screen with the apple logo and the spinning cursor.
Sometime's it would load into the OS but once I start doing anything on it like using firefox, msn etc it will just hang, freeze then it will crash and I get the beach ball thing spinning forever.
I took it to the apple store in UK, Westfield.
The guy turnt it on and it loaded, and he said there as nothing wrong with it, I told him there was but he insisted there wasnt anything wrong with it. Iv'e took it back home and now it crashes everytime it loads into the OS.
I ran hardware test and it came back with 0 errors I am now running an extended test just to double check.
Any ideas what could be causing the mac to behave like this? it just happened out of the blue 1 morning im very confused.
    Cheers.

Sure looks like it but since you've had your iMac for less than a year it might be covered by the one year limited warranty. Do you have AppleCare?
I can see why you would be confused since the information you got at that repair provider was iffy.
