IMac Hardware Advice

So I've decided to buy a new iMac (27 inch) in the next few weeks…
Can anyone suggest a good hardware configuration?
When buying the computer, they list a few customization options here:
http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac?product=ME089LL/A&step=config
For a graphic designer / exhibit designer who uses Adobe Creative Suite and FormZ (a 3D modaling software) on a day to day basis, what are my best options here?
NOTE: I render 3D models on a regualr basis. My number one priority is buying an iMac that can render 3D models fast.
- Processor?
- Memory?
- Strage?
- Graphics?
- USB Drive?
Thanks everyone!

• Apple recently tweaked Aluminum iMacs' hardware (IMO)

I bought one of the new iMacs a little over a month ago and had two problems with it. First, I encountered the infamous display freezing problem after the 1.1 update. Second, the SuperDrive became toast.
WIth a little prodding, Apple sent me a brand new one (same model and BTO options) while allowing me a few days before returning the old one. I've observed the following differences between the two.
· When I ran Software Update on the new machine, it didn't present the 1.1 update or the Keyboard update. I suspect these have already been applied at the factory. The new machine is perfectly reliable - no freezes, screen artifacts, etc.
· Apple has a new source for RAM. The old machine's 1GB module had a darker-colored circuit board and no manufacturer branding. The new machine has a lighter-colored unit made by "hynix Korea" (sic).
· The new machine is a bit noisier. The fans are noticeable (though barely), and all Hard Drive access is audible (but highly muffled). The old machine was completely whisper-quiet.
· The new machine's SuperDrive performs a brief mechanical function whenever the computer is powered-on. It also has more pronounced servo noises when inserting or removing a disk.
· The new machine is noticeably faster. Boot-up, already pretty speedy on the old machine, now happens in the blink of an eye. OS X overall performance seems snappier.
My first point makes me suspect that the 1.1 freezing problem might have a hardware component to it after all. And all of my observations lead me to believe that Apple has been tweaking the new iMacs' hardware.

I have had my new iMac now for 7 Weeks and had no freezes etc.
When the 1.1 update was available I downloaded it and worked better, for example the system became nippier.
Interesting what you say about the memory modules, As I examined the 2 1Gb modules that I took out a couple of weeks ago and replaced them with 2X 2GB modules I noticed that they are indeed the ones named "hynix Korea". The iMac is quiet with no apparent noise but with a very slight hum. However the superdrive does have a prounced servo noise when I remove or insert a disk.

• Can G5 iMac hardware be upgraded to handle Snowleopard?

Can the G-5 iMac hardware be updated to handle OSX v.10.6?

To enlarge on Niels' answer, you need an intel processor, SnowLeopard will not work on PPC machines.

• I have an early 2009 iMac need advice

I am new to this forum. As I mentioned in subject I have an early 2009 iMac with 4 GB of Ram. I am up to date with my operating system, running Yosemite 10.10.1.
My problem is that my computer is slow - very slow. It takes forever for the computer to start up and once it up forever for programs to load. Mail is the best example taking it a minimum of 5 minutes to load and in the mean time nothing else will load. RecentlyI started running the disk utility and repairing permissions. That helps a tiny bit. I also got CleanMyMac 2 and use it as well. In reading some of the forum I noticed someone suggested to run an EtreCheck report and post its report which I have done. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Pay attention to what rkaufmann87 is saying, because I agree.
Chrome is very resource intensive.
It is possible you are running other memory intensive apps.
You have a lot of 3rd party additions loaded at boot time. Do you really need all of them? Even after you get rid of MacCleaner (as suggested by rkaufmann87).
Do you really need the seagate and WD drive software? The Mac is fairly good at accessing disks without 3rd party intervention.
Any of the 3rd party additions listed by EtreCheck that you do not need, you should consider uninstalling.
That fact that you have
171.19 GB Page-ins
in just about 4 days, says you have about 0.5megabytes per second. That is a huge load on your disk drive.
Either cut back on the RAM intensive apps, or get more RAM. At least 8GB, but if your Mac supports it, 16GB. Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected by the long term forum contributes.

• Color correction hardware advice

Hi all,
I've been a video editor by trade for the past 3 years or so, but have only finally gotten around to investing in my own personal studio. I recently purchased a MacPro and am looking into broadcast monitors for color correction.
The main question deals with Intel compatibility and the hardware out there.. I'm curious what other user's experience has been. I'm going back and fourth between a Blackmagic card and a deck like a DSR-11. Anyone have any advice? The big thing to keep in mind is that I've been editing in-house at the companies I've worked for and have little experience setting up hardware. Thanks in advance!
cheers,
Adam Weinberg

hi Adam
its not all happening in the box alone. if my understanding is correct, you also install drivers which hook into the system to manipulate the DVI output in order to provide the necessary signal to the device. similarly, the drivers, allow FCP to hand off some of the processing to the extermal device, hence the hardware acceleration.
not sure this is the option you want though. if you're trying to set up a home studio, you may be better off looking for a suitable Decklink or Kona card as they will offer you far greater options for both input and output .
cheers
Andy

• It's possible change iMac hardware?

I want to buy a new iMac from from the apple store online but I want to know if in the future I can change the hardware of my computer like ram, hd, CPU, graphic card in an apple centre... Is it possible or my iMac will be always the same? Can I upgrade it? Thanks

Only the RAM is considered an upgradable part on iMacs. The harddrive however can be replaced if it fails by Apple. Unfortunately the graphics and CPU are not upgradable on iMacs. If you need to be able to upgrade the computer's major parts in years to come you should consider buying the Mac Pro, which is a far more versatile unit.

• JVC HDV Capture settings + Hardware advice for HDV capture

We have 6.02 FCP Studio2. We shot JVC HDV 720 60P footage (1280 x 720) and are trying to capture thru FCP. We have the JVC GY-HD200U camera and the JVC BR-HD50 outboard deck. Other than the AJA HD 422 device, what are my options (hardware and software) to capture with Log & Capture in FCP? I need In/Out points of course.
JVC HDV says it has a great HDV workflow in FCP, but they don't tell you how (at least where we have looked on their website)
Unfortunately, Blackmagic's Intensity Series cannot control the devices via the HDMI link (One HDMI output is on the JVC BR-HD50 deck). We thought that might work.
Can anyone give us advice on the settings in FCP to control our HDV deck or Camera? We would prefer to keep everything digital, via firewire
Thank you everyone for your help. I did search for this topic and found nothing. I am sorry if this has already been covered...

Connect your deck or camera via firewire to your Mac, and then select the easy setup in FCP's FCP menu that matches the format you've shot. I'm pretty sure for a device control setting either your camera or deck would use HDV Firewire Basic as a device control setting. Other than that it should use the stock preset for the format you've shot.

• Please Help! Broken IMac iCloud advice needed

Hi guys
Quite a complicated one but I appreciate all advice.
I currently have and iPhone 4 iPad 2 and had a 1st gen intel iMac until it passed away last week. Apple store stated it was beyond economic repair. I had roughly 230gb of data media etc on the iMac backed up to time machine.
ATM I cannot afford to replace the iMac and it never had iCloud capability
My question is: can I somehow send all my iMac backup to iCloud from the time machine back up so it can be accessed by my phone and iPad? Also if this was possible would all my media 80gb music 20gb pictures go to iCloud
If there are any ways or alternatives to this I would appreciate the advice
Regards
Chris

You cannot send the backup files from your time machine to the iCloud. An iCloud has only 5GB of memory maximum and it is used to share files between devices.
There are two possibilities:
1) You used the time capsule software and your back up appears on the time machine as one file only. In this case, you need to buy a new Mac to retrieve the files.
2) You saved your files into the time machine as if it was a hard drive. Thus, you can see all your files on the time machine even if you connect to it with a PC. In that case, you can plug an external hard drive via USB to the time capsule and with any computer/mac copy the files from the capsule to the hard drive.
You can be happy that you haven't lost all your files: they are all in your time machine.
I hope this helps.

• Hardware Advice for measuring sound

Hello,
My masters project has taken a turn and now I am using the speed of sound.
There are two arguments that have arisen. One from my supervisor who says that LabVIEW
is used in industry and that it is a real-time environment, meaning I would be
able to measure the time taken for sound to travel x metres (minimum 0.5m and 7m
maximum).
On the other hand the Labview guru on
campus has suggested that using a USB interface, and the fact that Windows XP
is not a real time environment would not return true times and there are other priorities
that Windows has to handle firs giving erroneous times.
Which argument is true, and which solution should I take.
Firstly, should I using a microcontroller with dedicated timers to time the
sound by starting a counter at 1.2MHz and take start value and finish value and
then working backwards to get the time, with the obvious hard part of setting
up communications with Labview through serial.
Or should I purchase some sort of serial/USB interface for Labview that would
be able to handle the job. If this option is best suited, are there any recommendations
for hardware? I'm using the SCB-68 which can only be used on a desktop
computer. I need something that is either Serial or USB as the final product
will be controller via laptop.
Cheers

Hello,
I'm just testing if I can use an external oscillator to timer. I'm using a NI-PCI 6229 and a SCB-68 interface box. I'm having trouble with the connections. Any advice for using the DAQx?
The is not wiring diagram, so I’m not sure where to put the signal in.
Cheers

• IMac upgrade advice

I want to buy a new iMac to replace a 2007 model. I have 300GB of files/data. Which soft/hardware, gadgets, and/or upgrades do you recommend? I want to spend less time staring at the spinning beachball!

Hey OT,
Thanks for responding to my question - I've run Etrecheck and pasted the results below. My technical expertise is minimal to nil - I don't know what you mean by "SWODs, booting, specific apps, when?" If you're able to describe how to find the information in an idiot-proof way, I'll give it a go!
Thanks again,

• IMac purchase advice

I intend on buying an iMac 27" soon, probably as soon as Lion is available. I'm a 54 y/o guy. I use my desktop for all basic computer needs, for communication with my employer (bidding work schedules, keeping informed about the co., training, etc.), Internet, banking, tracking/controlling investments, tracking family budget and finances, email, some gaming (not a rampant. gamer;-), news feeds, Skyeping, some word processing, I teach an occasional class & give occasional lectures, (is iWork enough for this, I wonder?), distance learning (completing a graduate degree online), and I plan on expanding my hobby on photo and video editing, in particular, digitizing old family photos and old family videos, an creating memorable slideshows and music videos for me and my family and friends. I also have a first generation iPad, my wife an I have small iPods, and intend to each get an iPhone as soon as the refresh happens.
Can someone give me some advice on how to equip my iMac 27" so that I am not getting too little or too much? I would like to stay under $2,100 if possible.
Thanks in advance!

For your needs the i5 would be fine, while the i7 is great and state of the art speed for what you're doing there isn't any real need. I would also stay with the base graphics card too. The ONLY reason I can think of to upgrade the CPU & GPU is if you intend to do 3D graphics such as online gaming, CAD/CAM and/or 3D rendering. From what you have stated I didn't see that was how you intended to use the machine. The slowest part of the machine will be the hard disk however again for your needs you would have a very nice machine.
I would upgrade the RAM (OWC is a very good choice) to 12GB. I agree going with the base $1999 machine would provide the best bang for your buck. Also don't forget to factor in additional costs for:
1. Sales Tax
2. RAM cost
3. Time Machine backup EHD
4. AppleCare BTW: you can also buy this discounted from Amazon or LA Computer Co for less than Apple charges direct. This is optional but a wise investment.

• Vocal hardware advice for L8 - Apogee Duet?

I realise this isn't strictly logic related, but value a lot the opinions & advice I've read here (& don't really use any other forums!!) so hope no one minds me asking...
After a few years of remixing I'm looking to start recording original vocals shortly, & wandered gearwise what my modest budget would best be spent on..
My set-up/situation is currently as follows:
I currently have a focusrite saffire LE, & am mixing 100% in the box. I've only ever used a stereo line in (for DJ mixes from CDJs) & stereo out (to dynaudio BM5a's) so my I/O needs are pretty basic - The few bits of vocals I have done roughly (guide vox etc) have been on a cheapish Audio Technica Mic straight into the saffire. I have some decent quality plugs (Inc Sonnox, URS) but only a budget (& now unused) outboard DBX compressor
My studio is in a single room, so vocals will need to be recorded in the same space, the room is treated with a dozen or so home made rockwool traps but is far from perfect.
I'll be working with a variety of vocalists, from MC's to Female R&B singers so a versatile/neutral Mic would be great.
My Budget is £600-800.
Because of the above, my thoughts initially were as below
1) An apogee duet card (replacing the saffire) OR an voicechannel like focusrite voicemaster PRO or TLA audio (2nd hand) to go into Saffire
2) An SE relexion Filter
2) Rode NT2a or SE3300 Mic (again 2nd hand if neccesary)
Would I get better results from the better A/Ds & inbuilt preamps on the duet, or outboard voicechannel... or voicechannel into a duet???? - any advice much appreciated.
Cheers.
Adam

Hi,
have you been looking into the t.bone mics?
If not - well - they are Neumann rebuilds... I own 5 Neumann Condenser mics . U87,TLM170,M149,M147. After comparing the t.bones to what I own and making the the a>b test looking like a random guessing contest I have stopped buying the brand and only pay for the mic. t.bones are amazing.... I can recommend the SCT2000 though it aint no tube mic.. T.bone also makes tube mics - check this link:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?sw=t.bone&x=0&y=0
THis will save you a bunch of money and I PROMISE you - that you are going to like them - If not - I will personally buy the mic from you to the org. price....;-))))
Since the t.bones are sooo cheap - maybe now you can look into the avalon.... I aint no avalon endorser but I know what a difference a great mic amp makes.... A great mic amp + a mediocre mic will give you a better result than a great mic + mediocre mic amp....
And by the way . t.bone is TOP notch... even their condenser mics for €40 are amazing...
Most people dont believe it - they wanna get neumann - as they think it's gonna make them a hit... Well neumann charges more than double just for the name...
I have a t.bone copy for any neumann I own - and this fare NO ONE has made the blind test...
Good Luck

• I'm ready to upgrade to an iMac. need advice, please.

i'm a designer/photographer.
i always have 3+ CS6 apps open, as well as lightroom, acrobat, and the web. i don't do video but am thinking more about it.
i store and manipulate a lot of RAW photos.
i am going to get an imac, but unsure how much to upgrade it. right now i have an early mac pro tower w/ 1tb drive that is almost full. i think that in the next 4+ years i'll need at *least* another tb.
Two questions:
1. i really only want a 21.5" imac but i'm not sure i can get enough storage without going for the 27".
can i?
2. if i *have* to go for the 27", which sounds better for my needs... the 3tb fusion or 512 flash?
thank you.

If you are a serious designer and photographer and want to get into video in the future, then your only REAL option is to go for a higher end, 27 inch screen iMac.
Get a 27 inch screen model with the fastest i7 CPU, either the 2 or 4 GB VRAM GPU will be more than enough for graphics, photos and video work.
I am on the fence on the fusion drives at this time as there have been postings about slowdowns when using for either video work and/or 3D animation work.
IF you can afford either the 512 GB or 1 TB Flash drive, go for one of those options.
Get a 27 inch screen iMac with the base 8 GBs of RAM and install cheaper, Mac compatible third party RAM.
The 27 inch iMac models are the only ones that still have user installable RAM and the 27 inch screen models can take a max. of 32 GBs of RAM.
IF you need an optical drive, you need to budget for one of these as the new iMacs no longer have bulit-in optical drives.
Make sure to budget for 3-year extended AppleCare.
Also, budget for two external drives. One either a large storage (2-4 TB ) fast data connected (USB 3.0 or THunderbolt) standard hard. drive OR another SSD in an external enclosure for normal everyday working storage.
The other external drive needs to be used exclusively for a data backup drive.
Good Luck!
