IMac has stopped charging via the keyboard USB port when sleeping - why?

I have a 2008 model 2.8GHz iMac with standard size aliminium keyboard. Historically, I have plugged my iPhone in to the USB port of the aliminium keyboard via the standard iPhone cable and when I put the iMac to sleep it continues to charge the iPhone.
However, the keyboard USB port no longer keeps charging the iPhone when I put the iMac to sleep. The USB ports on the back still do, but not those on the keyboard. Has anyone else encountered this and found a solution?

Although I have never connected my iPod to the keyboard in the past, I can confirm this behavior. Previously my Mac was an Early 2006 iMac Core Duo with the white plastic Apple Keyboard, so the USB hub in the keyboard was USB 1.1 and not recommended for iPods. Now I have a new Early 2009 Mac mini with the aluminum Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad with the USB 2.0 hub.
I can confirm that, based on the messages/symbols displayed on the iPod;
1. an iPod connected to the USB 2.0 hub in the Apple Keyboard charges when the Mac is awake.
2. an iPod connected to the USB 2.0 hub in the Apple Keyboard is ejected and no longer charges when the Mac is asleep.
3. an iPod connected to a 3rd party, non-powered, USB 2.0 hub connected directly to a Mac USB port is ejected but continues to charge when the Mac is put to sleep.
4. an iPod connected directly to a Mac USB port is ejected but continues to charge when the Mac is put to sleep.
However, Benjamin, if you read the the 3rd comment from the bottom, of the discussion thread to which you have linked, the poster states that Apple engineers have confirmed to him that;
1. with Mac OS X 10.5.6 a new power management scheme was implemented.
2. an iPod connected to the USB 2.0 hub in the Apple Keyboard is ejected and no longer charges when the Mac is asleep, is now correct behavior under the new power management scheme.
The drawback is that folks in that thread are reporting that not only does the iPod not charge, but that it is drained of power.

  • How to fix the Superdrive from killing the keyboard usb port?

IF the Superdrive is plugged into the iMac USB port, the keyboard USB port indicates that there is not enough power for the thumb drive or other device.  If the Superdrive is unplugged, all is well on the keyboard USB port.
    Any fixes for this?

Hi there, I have the same problem on a 27" iMac: when the superdrive is connected to a USB port on the Mac, the USB ports on the keyboard seem to lose all power, even for a USB key.
I called Apple and they told me to reset SMC, PRAM and VRAM but to no avail.
I will try with another keyboard as they seem to say it could be a keyboard problem (which a very much doubt...)

  • Using the keyboard USB Port

Can I plug my scanner into the keyboard USB as it is 1.1?
There isnt any more room to plug it into the back of the mac.

I plugged my HP scanner in the USB port on the keyboard. The scanner kept resetting itself all time (self test). I moved it to an USB on the iMac and that solved it.

  • AT300se...can I connect to TV via the micro USB port?

Hi, I was wondering if I can connect to my TV using the micro USB port on the AT300SE model tablet. This version does not ahve the micro HMDi port so i was wondering if I could use an adapter to conenct to my TV via the micro USB? Thanks, Nikos
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Looking at the specs, this tablet does not have HDMI.  So I see no way you can connect it to your TV.  Some of the newer TV's may be able so share your network to play files that are on your tablet.

  • IMac Retina shuts off USB ports when sleeping

I have a new iMac Retina i7 with 32GB RAM running Yosemite. Approximately 60% percent of the time, when the iMac goes to sleep, it shuts off all of the USB ports. This includes dumping hard drives without properly ejecting them, as well as shutting off powered USB hubs. Switching the drives and hubs around to different ports does not help the problem, and it appears to be becoming more frequent. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I too am having hub issues with my 5K iMac. I purchased an Amazon Basics hub, that never worked at all. I returned it and got one made by vantec. I have two external hard drives connected to it, and they always are recognized after sleep or restart. But other things get dropped, like my two printers. I seem to be able to resolve the dropped hub ports by ejecting my external hard drives and then unplugging the power to the hub, then reconnecting the power. When i do, all the indicator lights come on again, and things work.
I am working with Vantec about this issue, they have been terrific by email, and they are offering to replace the hub. But now I am wondering if something more basic is wrong, like this SMC reset that has been mentioned in this thread. I was about to ask if that was hard to do, but I just looked at the link provided by Ralph, and doing it is easy-peasy. I will give this a try, and try to remember to report back.
    thanks, Peter

  • N96 has stopped charging

    Hi,
My N96 has stopped charging. The phone is out of battery but won't recharge, I've tried the cable with other phones and it works perfectly but not with the N96. Can anybody help fix this?

I don't know much about batteries and everything i "know" about them is from this forum. The post above this one is correct, apparently the batteries in late Nokia models don't like being run down completely and I think it's best to just turn the phone off when it starts complaining too much. I read on one thread that you might even even have to try plugging the charger in and out of the phone a couple of times for it to charge

  • IPad 2 can't reliably stay connected to the left USB port on my MBP

I was upgrading my iPad 2 to iOS 8 before (succeeded) and first wanted to do a complete encrypted backup to my MacBook Pro. But when I connected it to my left USB port it wouldn't stay reliably connected. It kept on disconnecting and I couldn't backup or upgrade.
However, if I connected it to the USB 3 hub connected to my right-side USB port it worked fine and I was able to backup and upgrade and backup again.
Even after upgrading to iOS 8 I still can't connect it reliably to the left-side USB port.
However, I don't think it is the port, because I was able to do the same backup, upgrade and another backup of my iPhone 5 via the same USB port.
So I'm wondering what it might be given these data points. The iPad 2? The cable? The USB port? Maybe the USB cable is wonky but works better with the hub than the port?
I have no problem connecting other things to the left USB port, such as my printer and USB headset. And the iPad 2 and cable work just fine for charging via the adapter.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    doug

There have been a number of reported problems with the USB 3 ports on the 2012 models. Several people  running Mountain Lion say that it 'fixes' the problems. Until then, see this Apple tech note - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Good luck - Mountain Lion is just around the corner and will hopefully fix some of the glitches.

  • Can i hook a external hard drive to the tc usb port and fire wire from the computer for faster movie transfer ?

Will i be able to hook a WD 3tb external hard drive via the TC USB port for network storage as well as a direct firewire to the same WD 3TB external hard drive for faster transfer of home movie for storage?

In general, no.  I do know of any drives that support simultaneous use of the USB and Firewire ports.  (Or eSATA, if equiped.)  I have several USB/FW drives from Seagate, Western Digital, Iomega and others that I used my own hard drive and none allow this.

This is most often faulty Charger or Battery. Find another good working Wall Charger, or try Computer USB, but USB port is inferior to Wall Charger. While connected to Charger try a Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to restart itself. If still problem, Apple Store can perform free quick (minutes) battery diagnostic testing, make Genius reservation to avoid long wait.

  • IPAD 2 Won't Charge on USB port on my laptop, my desktop Mac but will charge via the wall plug

I am confused on what to do with my IPAD 2.  It won't charge via my USB Port on my PC that I travel with.  Also I just purchased a new desktop Mac and it will not charge on that USB port either.  But it will charge via the Wall Plug that came with it.  I am worried when I travel to different countries to use the wall plug.  I have an adapter to switch power.  I am from Canada and travel oversees where the power is 240 vs the 120 at home.  If I use my plug adapter and plug in my ipad to the wall Will I destroy the battey in my IPAD 2.  I love my ipad to travel with but it is very frustrating when it will not charge on my PC or on the airplane.  Then I am afraid to use the wall plug in the airport because of the difference in power.  Would really appreciate some help here because I am oversees 2 weeks a month and only get a couple days use of my IPAD.  I have all my books and everything on it and need to be able to recharge it.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Confused!!!!

For better future reference, you should be aware that the voltage means nothing when it comes to charging power. All that that is telling you is that the Power Adapter will work across that voltage range, i.e., you don't need a transformer to plug it into the outlet (although you may need different plugs, which is a separate topic).
What matters is the amperage (A) and the power in watts (W). The Power Adapter puts out 2 A @ 5 VDC (volts DC), which means it's producing 10 watts of power. It will output that across the entire voltage range.
A high-power USB port on a PC will put out 0.5A @ 5VDC, or 2.5 W. Be aware that not all of the ports on any given PC are likely to be putting out even that much power, at may well be putting out less than half as much. That's why you'll often see the "Not Charging" when plugged into a USB port, especially on Windoze laptops, and why it will charge very slowly even when it works.
FYI, the charger which is sold with the iPhone looks identical, is called the same thing, but only puts out 1A. It will work on the iPad but will charge more slowly. By that same token, the iPad charger will charge an iPhone just fine, it will just charge faster.

  • My IPad1 has completely shut down. It has no power. I have tried a restart and a reset with no results. I have tried charging through the keyboard dock, the wall charger and my Macbook Pro with no results. Is this a complete battery failure?

My IPad 1 has lost complete power. I have attempted a restart and a reset without results. I have attempted to charge with the keyboard dock, the wall charger and connecting to my MacBook Pro. Again no results just a black screen. Is this a battery failure? I am in Mexico for another 6 weeks and hoping to find a solution.

    Cathi-
How long did you have the iPad connected to the wall charger?  A completely dead iPad battery may not work until it has been charged for some time - maybe a half hour or more.  I suggest leaving it on charge overnight, and then trying the reset.
The MacBook may be able to charge the iPad if it doesn't go to sleep, but it will be extremely slow.  the Wall charger is definitely the best way.

  • Droid Ultra has suddenly stopped charging from the wall plug-in

My Droid Ultra has suddenly stopped charging from the wall plug-in. I've tried every charger in the house. I've tried to plug it into a wall charger at work in case there may be an issue with my outlets at home, but it won't charge from a wall plug-in from any location. However it will chage if I plug it into the computer or my portable battery charger. Any ideas why it won't charge from a wall plug-in and how I may fix it?

Let's get your phone charged, chaseperil! You stated that you have tried every charger in your home. Have you tried the whole charger or just the cable? We want to make it is not the plug part of the charger. Are you using the charger that came in the box?

  • The startup sound on the desk top imac has stopped is this a sign of hacking?

The startup sound on my imac has stopped is this a sign of startup hacking?

The startup chime means the Power-On Self Test (POST) has been passed successfully, and that no hardware failure or issue has been detected. There are ways to prevent it from sounding, one of them being to put your sound output to mute. You can also use a Terminal command to keep it off, but it'll reset to normal next time your restart your Mac.
There's a neat little prefpane that keeps it off between restarts. It's called (brace yourselves) StartupSound. Available for free here.
Could it be that you just muted your Mac?

Does the onscreen microphone come up but it doesn't convert speech to text? Or does the onscreen microphone not appear at all?
In System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Dictation, is the microphone set to "Automatic"? You might try setting it to "Internal microphone" to see if it works.
