IMac has trouble sleeping.

Okay, so I've had my 2.1 iMac for a while now, ever since the update to 10.4.7, the system will not sleep. I can put the Mac to sleep, however, several minutes after I put it to sleep, it wakes up again. Since my computer is in my bedroom, I've taken to shutting down rather than putting it to sleep, since it will always wake up on its own. Any thoughts as to why this might be happening? Thanks
~ Ian

What non Apple peripherals do you have connected to it, Ian? List everything other than an Apple mouse and keyboard.
Also, if you haven't already done so, boot up from your Tiger DVD and run DiskUtility from the "Utilities" menu. Get it to "repair disk" and to "repair permissions".
Have a look at the thread at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=558626&tstart=0 too.

  • My iMac has trouble loading fonts (and speakers) on startup.

Some mornings my brand new work iMac (running 10.7.2) has trouble loading fonts on startup. Sometimes the speakers don't appear to be connected/active either. Both problems go away for the day once I've restarted the computer once or twice. Any ideas on why this is?

    Ok, ready?
    1.  How many fonts do you have?
    2.  How did you install them?
    3.  Which version of InDesign?
    4.  Your speakers:  If external, is there a Lion update for them?
    5.  Have you checked your preferences for "Sound?

  • After software update, iMac has trouble booting

I have a 17" white intel iMac (bought november '06).
I recently had to archive and install (long story)
Everything works except after every software update that requires a restart, my mac doesn't restart right. I hear the startup noise a few times, getting softer every time until it is not audible. The iMac stays on the gray screen until I hold the power button down and manually restarted it.
I tried resetting PRAM a few times, but it didn't help.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks!

Are you sure you really had a problem? After a system update, it's normal for the imac to stay on the gray screen for a couple of minutes, then even reboot sometimes. If you've interrupted the process, you probably do have trouble now. I'd download the combo update from the downloads section of this site, run that, and give it time to restart itself.
If you mean it was stuck for like half an hour or something, that's not normal.

  • My 2009 Mac Pro has trouble sleeping under OS X Lion.

If it sleeps at all, it takes 5-10 minutes to go to sleep. Even sleeping from the Apple menu or the power button usually doesn't work. This is a problem because the thing uses like 150W at idle, and if I let it run all the time my electric bill doubles.

I haven't slept in way too many hours.... idle 150W is probably norm.
There use to be problems (2008) not being able to come out of sleep.
Issues with running on a UPS that was too small (less than 850W / 1100VA).
Tried SMC Reset once? unplug and press power on button 10 seconds, then release, and reconnect and try to power up?
Multiple members here with 2009s have said that they had to zap pram/nvram in order to get Lion installed.
my money is always to go for clean install and test new OS, migrate data, and keep SL around for awhile. Make sure no conflicts or driver issues.
USB cables and devices (and drivers, like for printer etc) can cause panics, sleep issues, as can FW800 (shorted port, bad cable) so I would only trust them when they have been verified and tested - the problem goes away or not when removed from the system.
I see LaCie and Seagate drives causing Lion issues. OWC are fine.

  • IMac has trouble discovering mouse

I turn my mighty mouse off each night to save batteries and when I turn it on the next day, it won't connect to the computer right away. I may have to turn it off and on 10 times to get the computer to discover it. I have to use a wired after market mouse to function until the mouse is discovered. Any secrets to getting the connection to respond sooner? If you don't turn it off, it really eats batteries quickly. Thanks, Bill

    Hello Tempe:
I turn my mighty mouse off each night to save batteries
I suggest you quit doing that. Bluetooth devices (Apple, anyway), go into a very low power mode after a short period of non-use. What you save is minimal. Battery usage is a function of your particular use, not turning it on and off.
I would trash the preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restart to be sure that there is not a corrupt preference file.

  • My iMac has trouble starting sometimes

I often have to try 3 or 4 times to get it to boot up. It just sits with a grey screen and beach ball. Is my hard drive failing?

  • My iMac has suddenly become very slow to wake from "sleep." Why? How can I fix this?

My iMac has suddenly become very slow to wake from "sleep." How do I fix this and what is causing the problem? Even the mouse wakes very slowly.

    Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
    1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Every morning I have a message saying my iMac has restarted due to a Sleep Wake Failure problem.  What is this and how do I fix it?

I have a new iMac14 with Yosemite.  Every morning I now find a message saying my iMac has been restarted due to a "Sleep Wake Failure" problem and that a problem report has been generated.  How do I fix this or even figure out what is wrong?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • My iMac has been acting sluggishly; taking unusually long to recover from sleep mode as well as it arbitrarily opening an app on its own. What is going on and can it be corrected?

My iMac has begun to act suggishly and unpredictably lately. It takes unusually long for it to wake from sleep mode and often opens with a particular app (PSE) for no reason. What is going on? Is there a clean-up procedure(s) in addition to clearing history & cookies or perhaps a upgrade I missed?

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • IMac has become slow and freezes up

For a few months now my iMac has been much slower than it used to be. Apps take longer to open, menu functions respond more slowly, folders and files take longer to open, pages longer to display, etc. Frequently the active window freezes and the colour wheel starts spinning for 10-15 seconds (it has been doing it twice since I started writing this sentence). This happens with all apps I am using, like Safari, Mail, Word and Excel, but particularly frequently in Logic Pro X. Sometimes when it happens (but not always), I get the error message "Disk too slow or system overload (-10010)". However, I upgraded to Logic Pro X about a year ago, and I never had this problem during the first number of months after the upgrade. I am aware that Logic uses a lot of CPU and memory, but, as mentioned, I also have the problem when Logic is not running. This leads me to think there might be something with the hard disk, although it beats me why it suddenly should have become slow. I am currently running everything from the built-in 1 TB hard disk. I have a 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU and 8 GB RAM. A full EtreCheck report with my system specifics is enclosed below. Can anyone help?

I am using a WD My Passport Studio external hard drive as a Time Machine. I get the error that a back up folder could not be created when my iMac has been asleep, any advice. The hard drive is set set not to go to sleep.

Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

  • Folder always opens when imac wakes from sleep

Don't think its a huge problem but when new imac wakes from sleep the same folder always pops up on screen(shaded in black). It always has to be closed before I can proceed with anything.Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also the folders name is always highlighted red. Thanks

Searching the web for "appcode.hex" the first item that I found was for something related to an Olevia TV.

  • Power USB Hub shutting down iMac while in sleep

    Hello,
First time using the forums here and I do apologized if this has been discussed before. I recently purchased a power 7 port USB hub (Newer Technology) from OWC. I plugged it in and everything seems to work great. However, when my iMac goes to sleep, it completely shuts off my iMac? I've verified that this is the issue and tested several times to confirm. I did a SMC reset and that did not work.
I was hoping if anyone who may have input in this matter or experience what I'm experiencing? I could return the usb hub and find a replacement but I was wondering if there is a solution for this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you installed Mac OS X 10.6.6 using Software Update then I would try installing the 10.6.6 Combo manually. Occasionally the Combo can install any missing pieces in your OS.

  • IMac won't sleep and freezes on shutdown

My iMac has developed an annoying problem. Most nights, when I try to put the computer to sleep, it goes to sleep and the immediately wakes back up. I exit all programs running in the dock and try to sleep it again, but the same thing happens. I will then try to shut it down, but it freezes on the screen that shows the wheel with the lines (sorry for the bad description there). Any ideas?

    Here's more on sleep;
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
    Good Luck!  DALE
