IMac HD secure delete AFTER reinstall of original OS?

I transferred my data from old iMac (Mountain Lion) to new iMac.
I then reinstalled the original OSX 10.5.4 hoping to securely delete the HD based on info received!
But it only deletes the free space.
How can I now securely delete the Hard Drive?

I realised later what you meant by boot off the install DVD's.
I also missed 'Utilities' in the toolbar!
We live and learn.  Secure erasing is on the go.
Thank you both for all your help.

  • HT4413 Trying to restore my iMac from Time Capsule after reinstalling the OS X

Had to reinstall the OS after replacing the power supply and finding the OS corrupted. Originally the iMac came with 10.4.7 which we upgraded to 10.6.8. Now trying to restore the data from my time capsule using  migration assistant  only to get the message that the backups were done with a newer version of OS X. I checked the version installed and it's up to date.
How can I get the data and how is it possible that the version is newer given that the same disks were used??

  • Artist folder contents deleted after reinstall

This has happened at least 4 times in the last 4 years.
Every time I reinstall I Tunes and accept the defaults (enter, enter, enter, enter) as it adds my music (ITunes Music folder on my D drive... D/My Documents/My Music/ITunes Music) to make a new library it selectively DELETES the contents of 2 folders which are original music from 2 bands I used to do sound for back in the 70s and 80's, all it leaves in the folders are the song lists (.txt files) and in 1 case, a real cd that the band made. It deletes the .wav files and the mp3 copies. They are not "somewhere else" or moved,… they are GONE. I was devastated the first time this happened as none of this material has ever been properly recorded and is available nowhere else.
I finally stumbeled on a copy on my sisters old HDD last year so this time I monitored one of the folders as the library was re-built.
    Same thing.....BLAM gone.
What the heck, we are talking about YEARS that this has been a problem, over multiple versions of ITunes
Oh and they are not in the recycle bin either...
Please help, this is the kind of thing I would expect MS to call a feature, but not Apple.

I should also add that for the most part everything else is left untouched, some of the same problems as other reports but not much and not often. It's the originals that are killing me, could it be that *since they have No tag info* at all, or sometimes just the song title, that iTunes deems them not important?
As Katrina hints above, if you have iTunes set to *Keep the iTunes Media folder organised* and add tracks that don't have album & artist details then these will get placed in an *Unknown Artist\Unknown Album* folder. Since .wav files can't carry a tag this is a particular problem.
Assuming the tracks were originally organised into Artist & Album folders then the first thing to to is turn off the *Keep the iTunes Media folder organised* feature before you try to import the tracks into iTunes. You can manually populate the tags for the tracks one at a time, or use a third party tagging tool for files which can have a tag. Alternatively you can use a script I have created called TagFromFilename which reads the path and filename to determine the Album, Artist, Album Artist, Disc No., Track No., and Track Name and can then update this information in iTunes.

Your Mac comes with software that measures temperatures and adjusts fan speeds to suit the environmental situation and operational parameters.  It's part of OS X.
If you want to take over responsibility for this function by using additional software, then I'd suggest
    A) You need a good reason to do this, and I'd be interested to know what this is
    B) You need to equip yourself with the knowledge and skills to drive that extra software
If the software you are using is safe to use, it will provide guidance on its use, so that it doesn't get you into trouble.  If it doesn't do that and you're not a suitably skilled engineer, then I'd say, get rid of it quickly and let OS X do its job without interference.  Otherwise, you risk overheating expensive components as you've already discovered.

We are having problems with the forum software (I can't see any new thread), so you are very lucky if somebody reads your question. Personally, the forum are near unusable for me now.
Respecting to that question, you want to delete everything but leave Office. Is this correct? If so, you will have to contact with Microsoft to see if it's legal to sell your Mac with Office installed > http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support I would not sell the Mac with Office installed.
To delete everything, you will have to erase the drive and reinstall OS X. Normally, you should turn off the Mac after reinstalling OS X, but in this case, the new owner won't have Office. On the contrary, if you install Office, the owner will have to use the Mac with your settings, so there will be other steps to follow

I have a corrupt jpeg on my desktop. It has duplicated itself 450,000 times freezing my finder. I have reinstalled 10.6.8 but not freed up the desktop. I have managed to delete the corrupt jpeg from a shared imac but cannot delete the duplicates. Any ideas

This can be done from Single User Mode. You're going to need a little nerve though since everything is command line based.
    1) Enter Single User Mode by restarting and holding down Command+S on the keyboard. A whole bunch of UNIX stuff will go by on the screen in white text on a black background. When it's done, the command prompt will be sitting at:
    :/root#
    2) Above that, you'll see that it tells you to enter two commands. Run this one first by typing it in and pressing enter:
    /sbin/fsck/ -fy
This does a system file check. A good thing to do in your case as it may be damaged. It could take a while. When it's done, you'll be back at the :/root# prompt.
    3) Enter the second command and press enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    4) Type the following at the prompt:
    cd /Users/name/Desktop
Where it says "name" above, the short name of your user account goes there. If you're not sure what it is, first type:
    cd /Users
    Then type:
    ls
That's a lower case L, not a one. It stands for "list". You'll get a listing of all files and folders in the Users folder. So if your short account name is diane, then the command will be:
    cd /Users/diane/Desktop
After entering that command, the prompt should read:
    :Desktop root#
    Type:
    rm *.jpg
Be very careful to type is exactly as shown. rm followed by a space, then *.jpg. Press enter and all files ending in .jpg will be deleted from the Desktop folder. With 450,000 of them, you could be waiting a while for the prompt to come back.
    Type:
    exit
and press enter to boot back into OS X.

  • My iMac hard disk has crashed twice, needing reformat, but appears to work after reinstall. Is this a hardware problem or normal?

The hard disk in my late 2009 iMac has failed twice in the same way. The symptoms have been:
    * First, the system starts to "stutter", freezing up at random intervals for some seconds.
    * This goes on for days or weeks, increasing in severity until I verify the hard drive
    * The disk check shows the disk is in need of repair, and the repair attempt requires me to boot from install DVD
    * When I repair the disk from the tool on the Install DVD, the repair fails and the disk is no longer usable
    * Reformat, reinstall and restore from Time Machine and everything works fine again
This happened once in end 2011, and now again recently. Is this something that is normal, or an indication that the hard drive is failing in some subtle way?
If the latter, would it make sense to replace it or will that cost me more than the value of the iMac at this point? As I understand this is not something for the fainthearted to attempt on their own.

Could be that issue with a cable not reporting the thermal
sensor status, as equipped in the original hard disk drive...
•Proprietary Cable can put brakes on upgrading Late 2009 iMacs - OWC blog:

Thus the local recommendation to replace the HDD with
one of the same brand & model with internal sensor; &
often with a service if this type, the original cables are
inspected and replaced. Sometimes in the process of
disassembly the originals can be messed up, too.
    {iStat pro widget? handy if you can find it now}
But the sensor is inside the hard disk drive.
Your SSD has none. So the computer may
be overheating without feedback to run fans
at a speed matching the demands of CPUs.
If the iMac overheats (or is led to assume so) it will shut off.
A possible work-around is suggested, but may not work.
Matching parts with the model is important.
    Hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!

I had creative cloud installed in a parallels deskto virtual machine on my mac, I delete the virtual machine without deactivate the creative cloud. after reinstall a new VM running windows 8.1. pro 64 bits, I downloaded the creative cloud installer but it does not install ang give an Error code 72, it is assuming that I already are using the Creative cloud in 2 computer, but itis no the case, how to solve this situation?

Dave: I did the Microsoft Update two days before this happened, and rebooted as required.  I just created a new restore point and lauched Creative Cloud.  Now I get the famous white screen:
It just sits and spins (been 10 minutes now).
Fortunately, I saved away this command (which I've had to use 4 or 5 times already):
    del %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE\opm.db
Unfortunately now, I get this (even after closing the above window):
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
So I killed everything that said "Adobe" in the task manager and this time, the command succeeded.
Fortunately, the current apps seem to still work.  I can't seem to find the "Creative Cloud" app in the applications on my system, but I launched Photoshop CC, told it to look for updates, and got a list of the 5 prgorams that need updates in the Adobe Application manager:
I will proceed with the updates, holding my breath.

It's not Logic that can't find them, it's your Komplete apps, though if you did exaclty as you say I can see no reason why they can't.
Do you know where the apps installed them in the first place? I chose a non-standard locarion for mine, but I'm sure it installs sounds to your documents folder/native instruments/name of app.
Go into the prefs of each app and choose the library location button on the library tab and point it to the relevant folder in documents/native instruments and see if that works

  • MacPro (2009) isn't working after I tried to reinstall the original OS.  I was previously using Mavericks before I reinstalled the original OS.

My MacPro (2009) was running on Mavericks OS and I was having some issues with it so I tried to reinstall the original OS X which came with the laptop and then I was going to upgrade it back to Mavericks.  In the process of doing so, the computer isn't working properly anymore.  The install of the original OS X worked just fine and then I installed the Applications CD which came with the computer (iPhoto, Garage Band, etc.).  Once the applicaiton install CD finished (which was sucessful), it prompted me to restart the computer.  After restarting the computer I was unable to open anything (Safari, Calendar, iTunes, etc).  So I tried to restart the computer and now it won't even being me to the login screen.  I have tried to restart the computer several times and it just shows a blue screen and never brings me to the log in screen so that I can continue upgrading it to Snow Leopard and then to Mavericks.
Please help.  I would appreciate any feedback.  Thanks.

Boot an external Mavericks USB disk, wipe, and install, and see if Mavericks works.  (There've been reports of problems with some Mac systems; of attempts at downgrades that didn't work.)
It's also possible that the original and unspecified issues with Mavericks were being triggered by a hardware problem, and the underlying problem is becoming increasingly pervasive.
If the Mavericks problems were potentially triggered by hardware, then load and run the hardware diagnostics for the Mac Pro, and see where that gets you.

    hi,
I had OS 10.5.8 and I did upgrade it to snow Leopard, later after a year or so my mac has crushed where I forced to reinstall the original OS 10.5.8. now How can I upgrade to mountain Lion or at least to retreive my Snow Leopard?

You need to use the Snow Leopard DVD to upgrade your computer. If you can't find that, phone the online Apple Store and order a new one.

    No.
If not, can this be submitted as an enhancement as it makes email use very cumbersome.
Yes. You can submit feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html.
