IMac headphone jack nonfunctional in XP (Boot Camp)

I recently installed Windows XP Home SP3 on my late 2008 iMac 20". I installed the Boot Camp drivers from a recent retail Leopard DVD, Boot Camp is version 2.1. Today I discovered that the headphone jack doesn't work. I plug in headphones, and sound continues to be played through the system speakers. These same headphones in this same jack DO work as expected in Mac OS X.
I have noticed in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, when I plug the headphones into the headphone jack, the "Line In (Realtek HD Audio Input)" icon lights up instead of the headphones icon (looking at the Audio I/O tab). If the driver was confusing the line-in jack with the headphone jack, as this observation indicates, it would explain why no sound is getting to the headphones.
The only relevant KB article I could find was this one relating to the MacBook Pro: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3588 , however it seems to be addressing Windows Vista (it doesn't specify), and in any case I don't have an MBP. I cannot find any place in XP or Realtek's software to choose between internal speakers and headphones or to disable either.
I am going to try installing the latest drivers from Realtek's website, but I am curious if anyone else is experiencing this problem.

I can confirm that the latest Realtek drivers do not fix the problem. I unstalled the Realtek driver and software via Add/Remove Programs, rebooted, and installed the newest version. It still recognizes the headphone jack as the line-in jack, and ignores the line-in jack altogether.
The Boot Camp driver version was 5.10.0.5713, the driver I downloaded today from Realtek is 5.10.0.5874. I found the drivers here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=24&Level=4& Conn=3&DownTypeID=3

  • Imac headphone jack stopped working!?

i have a 2.4GHz intel imac that is only about 6 months old and i had a headphone extender plugged into the headphone jack outlet on the back that i never touched. i unplugged it yesterday and re-plugged it in today and now the sound is not going through the headphone jack at all. i've tried using different sets of headphones without the extender, i've unplugged and plugged all cords, re-booted, etc. to no avail. i'm really frustrated as this computer is basically brand new! and i'm guessing to replace the jack is going to be a big job. has anyone else experienced this or know of a way to fix? i haven't run any disc utility programs...

I just bought a brand new 24" iMac and the jack worked out of the box for about 1 week. Then yesterday it stopped working. I did some research in these discussion threads and found one about using a secondary cable between the external speakers and the imac. So, I plugged in my Monster cable splitter for sharing your headphone jack with a friend. The connection was more secure than when the speakers alone were plugged directly in. The Monster cable had not static or wiggle. Everything seems to be working again. So it appears to be a defect in the headphone jack tolerance in the iMac. I've tested the external speakers in 2 different ipods and it works fine with both of them.
It ***** to have your new computer not work well out of the box, so if you truly want a mint machine, contact Applecare and see about replacement. Or you can try this easy fix. We'll see how long it holds up!
    Good Luck!

I have a 5 month old  iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...

  • IMac used as PC only through Boot Camp

Crazy question on behalf of a friend of mine who loves the form factor of the iMac, but is unfortunately completely reliant on Windows applications for his profession:
Has anyone used an iMac as basically a PC only...utilizing Boot Camp? Is there any downside to this? Apple hardware (especially in the all-in-one category) seems so much better than similar PC hardware. But I'm wondering if planning to completely relegate an iMac to being just a Windows box is a crazy idea. Any opinions appreciated.

Windows 7 on iMac Late 2009 graphic fix:
    Installing graphic drivers on iMac
iMac and ATI graphics with Windows is a PITA and real issue.
There are work around solutions people came up with.
Is a Mac OS better? I don't see it that way at all.
That's why I now use and built two PCs and turned Mac Pro into Windows 7.
Is a PC or a Mac better when it comes to Windows? No. Much better and easier to run Windows on PC hardware. Really.
Windows 7 support for Core i-family of processors is a step ahead.
OS X is so tightly tied to hardware, that can work against you.
And Apple doesn't keep Windows drivers (Boot Camp) updated.

  • IMac Headphone Jack broke - Can I switch?

The headphone jack on my old iMac Intel 2006 is broke. The red light is always on as well.
I've tried everything and read up on all discusstions on the board. But nothing gives.
Is there a way to use the audio-in as the audio-out? Somehow switch the usage of the 2 jacks? The in jack is fine.
    Thanks for the help!

Have you replaced your PRAM battery?  Sometimes that's all that is needed.

  • IMac headphone jack?

I have a 20 inch iMac - i believe it's the previous revision to what is currently offered. It came with the white keyboard and the machine itself is white instead of silver. ANYWAY, I was just curious about the headphone jack. For some reason, when I plug headphones into the jack, they don't appear to go in all the way. There is somewhere between 1-2mm of the metal jack sticking out. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or if it was normal? Thanks in advance!

    Hi harddeejr
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yes that is normal, as long as your headphones are working on both the right and left channels you have nothing to worry about.
My 2.1 speaker system and two different sets of headphones, all slightly protrude from the output jack.

  • IMac headphone jack sound drop

    Hi everyone,
My 27 iMac 3.06 GHz is dropping the sound from the headphone jack after a few minutes of playing audio. If I adjust the volume with the keyboard the sound comes back...for a few minutes again. If I use the on-board speakers for sound output the sound never drops.
Is anyone else experiencing sound from the headphone jack dropping on the new 27" iMacs? Any suggestions on what might be causing it?
I plan to take it to the apple store as I am multiple other problems at the moment with the machine, but I figured I would find out if this is an isolated incident or if others are having the same issues (a search of the forums did not reveal similar problems)

I have a whole lab (30) of new imacs and the headphone jacks need a lot to be desired. My headphones all worked on the emacs I had last year; they work on my laptops, but most are crackling and also in some cases causes Type to Learn to actually pause. When I pay $1000 dollars per machine I would think the headphone jack would work. After all how many years now have people been putting headphone jacks in computers? You would think they would have it down perfect by now. But each time I get a new set of macs I have problems: ibooks - the wire to the LCD was being pinched by the hinge - 15 out of 30 now don't work; macbooks- hard drive failures. It is interesting that I have imacs purchased in 2000 that are still functioning as they should - just can't update them past panther in most cases. Will Apple admit this problem with headphone jacks?

  • Tip of headphone plug stuck in my iMac headphone jack...PLEASE HELP

Stupid of me...I was there listening to music on my imac then decided to get a drink of water, forgetting the headphones was on my ears I got up...Then all of a sudden i heard some kind of snap then I saw the tip of my headphone plug was stuck in my headphone jack. I can still hear the music from my internal speakers but cant use any headphones or external speakers PLEASE HELP IN GETTING THIS OUT OF THE HEADPHONE JACK as soon as possible...
    Thanks

You have confused me, because you are posting in the iMac G5 PPC area, and you have an intel. I think that opening the case is quite difficult, you have to take the front of the bezel off, and the screen is taped down and is not easy to remove without damaging it. You probably will have to pack it up and send it to the nearest Apple repair center to be fixed.
    Sorry,

  • IMac 27" with Thunderbolt Display connected, Boot Camp Problem

    Hi everyone.
Let me start off by saying that I'm using a late 2012 iMac 27", 3.4 GHz i7, 680MX, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB Fusion, with a Thunderbolt Display connected.
I installed Windows 8 via Boot Camp, and it works just fine. Here comes my problem:
I have dual screens and I play Minecraft. Minecraft's full screen is basically crap, and therefore I disabled the iMac display. I used Windows-button+P to use only the secondary display. This turns the iMac display off entirely, and leaves the Thunderbolt Display on. Note: This is not possible in Mac OS X. Then I played a little Minecraft. When I was done, i wanted the main iMac display to come on again. I then used Windows-button+P again, to turn both displays on. Then bam, totally looked like the iMac display was broken. See the images below, to see how it looks:
    1) http://cl.ly/image/1p2e3c1Z1z1C
    2) http://cl.ly/image/2g0n1M1Y0t0g

    4) http://cl.ly/image/113b3K2O1Z43
    5) http://cl.ly/image/1q2v1s1n3w1f
This image-retention-like stuff stays there, even if I reboot into Mac OS X, and then it eventually disappears. I can reproduce this, by doing the same thing again, (windows-button+p) but only in Windows, because that you cannot turn of the main display in Mac OS X. Maybe this is the reason why you can't?
Anyone can tell me what I can do? I guess I could try reinstalling, but it seems more like a hardware issue, than a software issue.
Thank you for your time, and thanks in advance.
Another note: I'll try doing the opposite, and see if it happens on the Thunderbolt Display as well. (Windows-button+P, and then only using the main display)

Ok, I am marking this as "answered", as I have solved it myself, while I still have no clue what lead to the problem in the first place.
I've been on the phone with Apple Care today, and they were as clueless as I was and had never heard of this before.
After we tried the usual stuff (unplugging all wires, PRAM Reset, SMC Reset), to no avail, I was told it could well be a hardware problem and that I should have the iMac examined at the Genius Bar, so an appointment was made.
I'll cancel that one though, as I was able to cure it by myself for now (and carrying around a 27" iMac in Munich's busy downtown pedestrian zone is not really fun).
This is what I did (and I'm so happy I tried):
In Display Settings, I switched the external display back to landscape mode and selected "mirror displays".
Then I rebooted, and voilà, the problem was gone (Apple logo on white background was showing).
I switched it back to 90 degrees rotation and no mirroring, and it's still all ok.
I booted Windows 7 in Bootcamp, then back to Snow Leopard, and it's all still fine.
I can still only wonder what messed this up in the first place, but for now I'm happy.

  • IMac 27" DisplayPort Output Ceased after Boot Camp

I recently installed Windows 7 x64 via Boot Camp, which seemed to run smoothly... but the display drivers were not detecting the Radeon HD Mobility 5750, and forcing a resolution of 1920x1440 or something to that effect, something 4:3 anyway.
Looking at this link: http://www.feedmeastraycat.net/2010/08/11/installing-boot-camp-3-1-on-windows-7- 64bit/ I was able to find a link to the latest Win7 Catalyst Mobility Drivers (update, tip #1 -- http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=10806750&postcount=22). After uninstalling the previous Catalyst driver I installed (Catalyst typically doesn't overwrite newer drivers with old ones, but does not let you know...looking at the installer log) and installing the driver linked above, I rebooted back into Windows.
The displays were recognized, but the win7 catalyst driver reported "Fake" for everything (Resolution, Hz, etc) in the DisplayPort screen portion and would not display anything. Thinking it wouldn't be a big deal to not have dual screens in windows, I booted back into Mac OSX. The second display stopped working there. Unplugging and replugging in the DisplayPort does the customary screen re-configuration, but the screen remains black "DVI - No Signal". If I look at the Display Preferences pane, I can see that it detected both screens, at the proper resolutions (eyeballing the arrangement pane), and I can re-arrange the screen arrangement. The mouse disappears just like the dual screens were active, yet the screens remain black.
I dug out the DisplayPort connector for my MacBook Air (different dongle) and verified that the monitor still works... did I fry my DisplayPort somehow?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Ben

No suggestions? Is there any way to refresh the ATI driver on OSX and/or take the card back to default settings?

  • HT2494 iMac headphone jack stopped working

    Hi folks
The headphones are not working any more on my iMac and nothing has apparently changed. They were working yesterday.
Have tested several other sets of phones and an external speaker system too - no go.
The headphone output choice suddenly does not appear anymore in Preferences/Sound/Output, even though the headphones are plugged in all the way to the hilt. Only the 'Internal Speakers" appear in the window as an output option.
I have also changed and inter-changed all the setting choices on the Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup/Output/Internal Speakers function.
In addition, all the mute settings are unchecked.
I have shut down restarted and slept the Mac. Still nothing.
My operating system is OS X Mavericks. No upgrades of any kind have a link to the problem as I have not carried out any.
    So - I'm stumped.
Does anyone have any ideas, please?

  • IMac headphone jack stopped working (Part 2)

Following my earlier post 2 days ago, even though it seems I'm just talking to myself, - just in case anyone is interested out there:
I'm attributing this fault to a software error. The 'headphone' option re-appears from time to time for selection from the System Preferences/Sound/Output window.
One selected it works for an indeterminate time before reverting back to 'Internal Speakers".
    It is SOOOOOOO frustrating .
If any Apple tech guys browse these listings at all - could you PLEASE fix this obvious bug. My Op software is OS X 10.9.4. on a Mac 21.5 inch late 2012 model.
    Thank you in hope.......................................

    Thanks OT
I tried booting into the Recovery volume selecting Disk Utility and repairing both disk permissions and the disk. Still no change.
I don't have the nerve to reinstall the system, just in case I screw up something else!
Thanks for your reply. It's appreciated.

  • IMac headphone jack problem

I have a mid 2007 iMac which still works like a charm but recently, a buzzing noise is coming from the right side of any headset or earplugs i use. Anyone got an idea of what might be the cause of this?

Still waiting for some kind of help.

  • Black/Blank Screen with Boot Camp Win 7 Install on new 27" iMac

I'm having a problem getting Windows 7 on a new 27" iMac and am familiar with the Boot Camp Windows installation process. Here's what I've done...
    1. Run Boot Camp from OSX, partition the drive.
    2. Insert Win 7 cd, proceed with installation.
    3. Computer restarts and the 'preparing for initial setup' message displays with the Win 7 splash screen. When it switches to where it should be displaying the Win 7 desktop, the screen is black.
I can hear the Mac still running, but there's no display. It's like it's waiting for some type of user input for the intial Windows setup (haven't yet entered the key).
I've done a hard shutdown and restarted Windows with the exact same result. After reboot, I get the 'Windows was not shut down properly' message with the 3 safe mode options, where choosing either gets me the 'Windows cannot complete setup in safe mode'. And any key reboots it.
The Mac side still runs fine and holding the option key at start up gives the Mac/Win boot options.
I'm inclined to think that it's a video driver issue since the 27" is brand new. Maybe Apple used a new video card for the larger screen and haven't updated the Boot Camp drivers. I checked on ATI's site for an updated driver for the Radeon HD 4670 they say is in the new 27" model that's currently available. (not the quad core)
Is there any workaround for this? I was thinking of installing Vista instead, and upgrading to Win7 once installed, but if it's a driver thing, it would just be a long way to the same result and could have the same problem with Vista as well.
    Any ideas?

I think I figured out what is happening here with the video drivers on the new iMac's and Win7. I believe it's re-directing the video to the mini display-port output when you see the screen go blank. I installed my Win7 x64 with no issues but I had an external monitor hooked up at the time and while it was installing the O/S my iMac went black but everything moved over to my external screen. Once it finished installing then everything went back to normal after a reboot.
Not sure if that helps anyone but pretty sure that's what is going on. So if you have another monitor handy, get the mini display-port adaptor from Apple and connect your external screen before you install Win7. Cheers!
P.S. If you have one of the new iMac's and want to install the latest Radeon drivers (after you have installed Win7 on your iMac), try the following. Download and install the drivers from ATI/AMD directly. They'll try to install and fail (no worries) but now the driver/install files will be unzipped into an ATI folder on your main Windows hard drive.
Now go to this site: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php and download the tool and use the Vista instructions listed on the main page of the URL above. You shouldn't need to download the MSXML 6.0 and I don't think you need to disable the UAC stuff like they suggest for Vista (I didn't) and it works fine. UAC is not nearly as intrusive on Win7 as it is in Vista so I think that's why it worked for me and pretty sure the MSXML 6.0 is already in Win7. Once the program has modified the mobile Radeon drivers then you can run "setup" from your ATI directory and the new drivers will finally install correctly including the Catalyst Control Center. Voila! I now have 9.10 drivers up and running on my new 27" iMac and working perfectly so far.

  • No headphones under Boot Camp

When running Vista x32 under Boot Camp on my 13" MBP, I can't get sound through the headphones - only through the internal speakers. Based on previous recommendations that have been posted, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Boot Camp drivers - but the problem persists. I've tested several different headphones and none work under Boot Camp.
However, when running OS X or running Vista under Fusion, the headphones work as expected.
Any recommendations what I should try next?
    thanks!

Had the exact same issue. I would plug-in my headphones and the sound would continue to come out of the internal speakers instead of the headphones.
    HOW TO FIX
    -Plug in your headphones
-Right click on the little speaker in the system tray and click on "Playback Devices"
-Right click on Speakers (Cirrus Logic) and disable
-The sound should now only be coming out of the headphones
