IMac High Fans - FIXED

Okay! This is my first post but I need to tell everyone what happened.
After I installed Snow Leopard my iMac fans were constantly running high. The temperature was also extremely hot. So, I called Apple. I live 150 miles away from the nearest Apple store so they sent a tech to my house. He replaced ALL three fans. About an hour after he left the problem reoccurred.
My next step was to take my computer to an authorized retailer which was about 45 minutes away. They kept the computer for two days. They replaced the power supply due to burn spots. I thought for sure they had fixed the heat problem. I was wrong. The problem still existed.
So, I drove 150 miles to the Apple store. They kept my computer for 6 days and then called me. They said they could not find ANYTHING wrong. I drove the 150 miles to pick the iMac up and then all the way back home. Sure enough, the problem still existed.
I was up until 2am and I finally found out what was wrong. There was an app in my preferences called "fan control". I removed this app and the problem was SOLVED. All from a third-party app. I guess Snow Leopard didn't support the fan control.
The process of my removing the "fan control":
1. In the preferences pane I right-clicked the fan control and removed it
2. I then went to my .../Library/StartupItems/... and deleted the fan control
3. Reboot the computer
4. Empty the trash (couldn't do this before because the files were still being used)
5. Reset the SMC
6. Do a PRAM reset (I did this twice...heard chime 3 times)
VIOLA! Mission Complete!

Glad to hear that you solved your problem.
I just popped in to share that I've been using smcFanControl (firmware app.) on my Early Core Duo for about 3 years and it gracefully made the upgrades from Tiger, to Leopard, to Snow Leopard without a single problem or issue.
I'm thinking that the upgrade to Snow Leopard may have triggered the smcFanControl app. into turning back on, but why it resurfaced running at full tilt will probably remain a mystery. Perhaps it was just an old incompatible version or corrupt because it was migrated from a different system.

  • Imac high fan speed and goes to sleep 10sec after wake-up

    Hi,
Since today my imac's fan speed is high (optical fan and cpu fan speed at: 4000rpm)
Done a hardware test wich gives me 4SNS/1/40000001:IDSR-0.000 indicating something with logic board. According to istat all my temperatures are below 35°C (95°F). istat has readings for the cpu and optical drive temp (both around 26°C)
On top of that if I put my imac to sleep after wakeup (give or take) 10sec later it would go to sleep again. tried the smc reset procedure. no success
Any other tricks to try or just go for an exchange? (imac was bought on 2feb2010)

I've had this problem since replacing the MLB in my iMac a few weeks ago. Initially brought in for repair when the CPU fan came on at 4k rpm and stayed on even after SMC reset and nvram reset. First replacement MLB was a dud, second corrected the fan problems. Now I'm having the sleep issue, I can't tie it to any particular process. Initially I thought it was graphics related as it would go to sleep during graphics intensive work, but yesterday it was doing it when just copying data to an external drive. The temperatures of the CPU and the GPU diode are within spec. I now use a fan controller to keep the CPU fan at 2100rpm and the HD fan at 2100rpm and I don't have the problem. From what I can tell now is that a sensor is incorrectly reporting temperatures intermittently. It may not be the MLB or the graphics card specifically, but the cable connecting the sensor to the board. I ran AHT after the last time it did this and it failed a sensor, but after running ASD on the machine it passed all the hardware. I'm bringing it back into my shop later this month and if i can remember i'll post here with the resolution, not much I can do at home beyond software diagnostics.

  • Black Screen, high fans, then restart

    Hi,
A few days ago, my iMac went to a black screen out of nowhere and began having three or four 2-second pulsations of extremely high fan spinning. When the loud fanning ended, the computer restarted and I went on without seeing any obvious issues with my computer. I was not running any huge applications, maybe a few safari windows at the most, and it just happened. I thought that there was no issue, but today the computer did the same exact thing about 15 minutes after I started Word. The screen went black and the 2(or more)-second pulsations were back, but they lasted 2 or 3 times longer, about 20-30 seconds in total. The second time in 3 days has me fearing more than just an unproblematic crash. Has anyone experienced an issue like this, and how did it get fixed? If not, does anyone have an idea about the cause, or may it just be a symptom of a greater problem? Any ideas help. Just to add, I recently posted a message asking for normal computer temps, and my GPU temp seems to be a bit above normal (consistently at 62 celsius).
    Thanks,
    Matt

Nothing wrong with iStat Pro, but I use Bresink's HardwareMonitor.
It monitors temps, fan rpm, volts, amps, etc. and can display charts
of the measurement trends over time. IIRC, it cost about USD $10,

    There's also a trimmed-down freeware version, TemperatureMonitor,

  • 24" iMac - noisy fan

Early 2009-model iMac 24" - previously fan was silent, replaced screen/HDD under Applecare and suddenly the fan is making a very obvious whirring noise which gets extremely high pitched at high fan speeds. Sent to AASP twice (two different stores), they say they can't hear it and will therefore do nothing- what can I do? This noise is driving me crazy, as I work in a silent room. SMC reset does nothing.

For the first one, they took it into their tech workshop and tried it - second one was in another country! Ambient temperatures are around the same too.
Fans make a noise from boot is the problem (even before the Apple logo appears) - temperature readings are normal, fan speed too (~ 38C/800rpm ODD). When I use SMCFanControl to increase fan speed, the noise increases proportionally - that's how I figured it was the fan (previously, I had no idea what was making the noise). Great idea though.
I only have access to one AASP in my city, and have to travel for 2-3 hours to get to my nearest Apple Store (and I don't drive...). I'm sure if I were there and *made* them hear it (ambient noise tends to eradicate any noise made by my iMac) I'd get my iMac back to its perfect state. Gah.

  • IMac G5 fan noise

    Hi MGW,
Baby Boomer recommended that I check with you about our iMac G5 fan noise since you used to have the same model. For a reference as to what all has been suggested and done go to: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9810894&#9810894
I've done some internet searches and come across some other ideas on what may be the problem and if it is not too much trouble I would be very interested in your thoughts about the suggestions by DeathStalker13 --- please scroll down to #19 at this link:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=50158
Here is another link that I've found information about iMac G5 fan noise. I'd also like your impression about the methods that these people have done to solve the issue:
    http://scienceman.com/legacypgs/00imacG5fanforum.html
I've also contacted a local AASP store and from just our telephone conversation they think just cleaning the fans and inspecting the computer which would take 1-1/2 hours at $95/hour should take care of the problem.
We'd really appreciate you opinion. Thanks!!!

Thank you so much for answering so quickly. I apologize for not being able to do the same. We had unexpected house guests and everything else was set aside while they were here.
This morning I have been researching trying to figure out how to disable Flash but so far I've been unsuccessful. We have a Power PC Mac OS X 10.4.11, Safari version 3.2.1.
Under the Safari "Help" it says, "Safari works with the plug-ins that are installed with Mac OS X. To see a list of installed plug-ins, open Safari and choose Help > Installed Plug-ins."
I checked and the Installed Plug-Ins list only has one "FLASH" listed - Shockwave Flash. I didn't know how to disable it or if I should.
You suggested changing to Firefox or Camino. We already swap between Safari & Firefox (version 3.0.12) for other reasons. Unfortunately, the fan noise is the same whether we use Firefox or Safari.
It was interesting that under Firefox "Help" they recommended disabling Adobe Flash plugin: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Usingthe+Flash+Plugin+withFirefox?style_mode=inproduct
They said something about, "vulnerable to an extremely malicious exploit" and that until Adobe has an update, you can disable Flash. I followed the instructions but the only plug-ins I found were the following:
    Default Plug-In
    Netscape Navigator Default Plug-In
    Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.6.4
Runs Java applets using the latest installed version of Java. For more information: Java Embedding Plugin. Run version test: Java information.
    Java Plug-in
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in
    Java Plug-In (CFM)
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in (CFM)
    QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.2
The QuickTime Plugin allows you to view a wide variety of multimedia content in web pages. For more information, visit the QuickTime web site.
    Shockwave Flash
    Shockwave Flash 9.0 r159
    Shockwave for Director
Macromedia Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 10.1.1
I haven't changed anything yet, as I'm not sure what I should disable. We have considered putting up with the fan noise since it isn't as bad since we cleaned the fans but if there is an easy fix we'd really appreciate your advice. Thanks!

  • No video, high fan noise on startup, for the THIRD TIME

For the third time in slightly less than three years, I have encountered the same crippling problem with my iBook G4 (1 GHz, June 2004 vintage). In essence, the screen will abruptly go black while in use (not screensaver) and no amount of keyboard/mouse activity will reactivate the display. If I power off by holding down the power button then restart, the screen stays black and the fans come on full speed.
Despite a bit of confusion on the details, this sounds like the problem described on the webpages below. In essence the Danish government has issued a finding that there is a design flaw which allows excessive logic board flexing, which in turn causes logic board failure.
This is, as I said above, the third time I have encountered this failure in less than three years. Worse, they seem to be coming closer together. The first was after about 1.5 years, the second 9 months later, and now seven months after the second repair. Since I didn't get Apple Care, paying for a third repair out of pocket would bring my repair bill up to the cost of a new iBook.
I do not abuse my iBook, and since the second repair I have been very careful with my iBook. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting Apple to acknowlege the problem or who I can appeal to? Apple's website doesn't seem to offer any e-mail tech support options and I'd rather not sit on hold for an age (again) if it can be avoided. While I don't want to abandon my iBook or Apple, I may be forced to if I can't rely on the hardware.
    Thanks

iBook G4 1GHz (early 2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   blank screen, high fan noise on start

Well it doesn't sound like the Danish power problem since it will start up.
The ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 4x AGP graphics processor chips in these iBooks have been problematic. Usually it's the reball problem and it can be reballed for ~ $78. I've done 4 this year and they work just great. A cheap way to get nice laptops. If they respond to the "shim fix" then reballing will work.
A more troubling problem is with the 9200 chip itself. My reballer says that this chip is in itself the cause of some of these problems. He knows it since it's also used in IBMs, Compaqs and many other laptops and he's seen a lot of failures. My only failed reball was a 9200. I have a line on a replacement board or finding the chip in a broken PC.

  • IMac G3 Fan outside ????

all imac have Fan in side.... my iMac 450 MHz G3 DV ( sage ) don't have Fan. it is possible to fit fan but not inside outside.( handle area ) sucking air from inside to outside . there is no air flow inside.?????

Keep in mind, i got this computer to just play with and expand, so i dont care if its necessary or not. It was fun taking it apart! I used a 3 speed fan with blue led lights and cut a hole in the case where the CRT compartment is. I was VERY careful around the CRT, baddd things happen otherwise. Anyways, i used a dremel to cut the hole. I set the fan on high, but its just way too loud for my taste, so i may go back and turn it down. It seems to be working fine and ***** alot of air through the case!

IMac G5 fan always at maximum speed after booting into single-user mode in 10.4.3
    Model: 1.6GHz iMac G5 with 10.4.3
I updated my iMac to 10.4.3, then booted into single-user mode to do some cleaning at the command-line level. I know, as others have discovered, that in single-user mode, the thermal control is off, so the fan gradually increases up to maximum speed and stays there until you reboot or go into multi-user mode. Well, I have never experienced this one before, and I'm freaking out about it... I went into single-user mood one reboot after upgrading to 10.4.3, and after all the println white text lines ended, the [1] fan shot up to maximum speed in 0.35 seconds (it sounded like a high-pitched DJ record scratch during the time interval), [2] the fan stayed at maximum speed when I left single-user mode, and [3] I cannot get the fan to slow itself! I rebooted, shut down, and even tried booting off the Tiger CD, but the instant I hit the power button to turn on the iMac, the fans blast up to maximum speed. They shut down when I put the iMac to Sleep, but then they blast up again in full when it wakes up. I checked my settings in the Energy Saver preference pane, and I have the performance set to "Reduced," which is the lowest possible.
I searched to see if anyone else had this problem or if the KBase had any info, but I didn't see any. I'm thinking about erasing and installing my stuff on the iMac, even though I just did that today.
Again, this maximum speed fan problem is freaking me out. It just started when I booted into single-user mode in OS X 10.4.3. I have booted into single-user mode before (10.4.2) and have not experienced this fan issue. I repeat, the fans blast up to maximum speed after pressing the power switch to turn on the computer, so they do not even wait for the Apple logo to show up on the screen before blasting away. How can I get these fans to not do this anymore?!

for the last few months my 20" 1.8GHz Imac has been very noisy - fans seem to run constantly and noisily. It might have been when updating to Tiger but I was never sure. Today, on the advice of a chat tech, I opened the case and reset the SMU to hopefully cure another problem. I noticed that all the air vents, intake and expel ones, were all quite heavily clogged up - not blocked but clogged with dust and fluff. I cleared it away mainly by blowing but also with a hand held hoover held close by. The exposed fan still as a lot of muck on it but greatly reduced and all the vents are completely clear. Having put everything back together again the iMac has been runnning quietly all day. May have been the SMU reset but equally might just be that the computer couldn'tdraw in cool air, circulate it or expel it properly and the fans had to work overtime to cope. Worth checking if you have noisy fans running at speed constantly.

  • IMac 27'' fan never below 1700rpm

Hello - I have a new 2014 iMac 27'' i7@4GHz but the problem is that - no matter what the temperature of the computer is - the fan never goes below 1700rpm (which is very loud compared to my old one) - not even in idle mood. Right now e.g. the tool smcFanControl shows 95 Fahrenheit and 1700rpm - there is no need for such a high fan speed. I reset SMC a couple of times (unplug power for 15 sec then restart) and also reset PRAM (cmd+opt+P+R until the second sound) but noting worked. Any idea...?

You should not attempt to modify the fan speed of your computer.  Apple's machines are finely calibrated.  If you have a reason to believe the machine is failing to offer the right amount of speed, take it to Apple or an authorized repair shop for diagnosis.     There are many reasons for slow down if that's the reason you were diagnosing in the first place, which my subscription FAQ covers*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html
Otherwise, don't give yourself more reason for headaches.  And keep your data backed up.

I took my iMac to be fixed and when I got it back, mail was not set, so I called Apple and they helped me set up mail. Now the new mail goes to trash and there is no number by the 'inbox' to tell me how many new messages I have. I cannot save a draft to 'drafts.' There is a large number by 'trash' (I think all mail went to trash - including drafts). When I send myself an emai, it goes to trash also. This is on both my iMac (the one taken in) and my MacBook Pro (same emails) which was not taken in.
I went to 'rules' but have no idea what to do there. There are no rules in the rule box. When I click 'add rule' it puts 'rule 1' in the rule box, but since that was not there when I took it in, I delete it to have an empty rule box.
Can someone pleasehelp me. I am completely stupid with all this. Do not under stand what is suppose to be set up in 'rules.'
    Thank you so much,
    Arudi

Now new mail is coming to both computer's inboxes but there is no number on the stamp icon on dock to show number of emails on the iMac. Nor is there a number by either email address under MAILBOXES/inbox (sidebar) on the iMac. This number is showing on MacBook Pro.
I also can save drafts now on both computers.
Seems the Pro is fixed and the iMac is only missing the numbers on dock icon and by addresses in inbox.
Now that the problem is less, I feel i am wasting your time but will continue so maybe I can get those numbers back.
Two emails > AT&T email and gmail.
Apple's Mail program for email - yes, and gmail.
    IMAP for both accounts.
Did not change mail configuration on MacBook.
The iMac and MacBook Pro have the same mail configuration except in Accounts/mailbox behaviours/store draft messages on the server was not marked on MacBook > it is now.
'Store junk messages on the server' was marked on one computer for gmail, but is unmarked on both now.
On the iMac, Accounts/Accounts info/Outgoing mail for gmail is smtpgmail.
On the MacBook Pro for gmail it is smpt.gmail.com (plus) my email address.
Rules/Add rule window, on the MacBook third line is 'Any Recipient', on the iMac third line is 'From."
The last box on that line has my email address on the MacBook.
The last box on that line has the last address I sent an emil to (last night), on the iMac.
On the last line on iMac, no box was selicted for 'to mailbox' > I choose 'inbox' because it is on the MacBook Pro.
Now I have a Rule #1 and am not sure I should have because there was no rules marked when I took the computer in.
Thank you. I relized I had done the labeling wrong when so much of my question appeared twice and no one else's did. I know how to do it now.
    Thank you so much,

    Hi Gillal,
If your the fans in your iMac fans are running frequently it may be that your computer is overheating for any number of reasons. This article should help you understand how they work -

If the iMac seems to be using the fans when it should not be, you may want to reset your iMac's System Management Controller. See this article for the steps to do so -

  • High Fan Noise and 100% CPU usage by Dock

My MacBook Pro 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.8 just started making a constant fan noise. When I checked the Activity Monitor, it shows my Doc CPU usage as 100%, and my Percent User Usage is about 52% System 2.5% and % Idle is 47%. These numbers are when there is nothing running except Activity Monitor. When I log out and log in as another user, the high fan noise stops, and the CPU usage of the Doc is <1%. I have tried restarting my computer, Rebuilt my Permissions, Emptied the Trash, and Reset the SMC (I think I did it correctly for the MBPro, but the Power Light did not change, and nothing seemed to be any different on my computer.) I think I recently did a recent Apple Update, but I don't know how long ago that was. But it was sometime in the past few days. Does anyone have any idea about what could be going on?

  • Possible solution iMac cooling fan stuck on high and loud

Had iMac go to sleep and just died, no lights or anything, power switch ignored me. Unplugging from wall, holding button in various ways on and after power up did not help in any way. Read articles on knowledge base and googled the web. Finally decided to pull out the round power plug on the rear of the iMac which to a regular user does not even look like it comes loose but it does. I checked the end with a volt meter and saw 120 volts ac and knew the cord was good. Plugged it into the Imac then momentarily touched the power switch and wham the iMac came on with a fury and the fan on super high speed. I'd never heard any of the iMacs in the house ever sound this loud, even on hot summer days. Pulled my hair out for a while but then repeated the steps removing the power cord from the back of the iMac, not the floor, and this time I pressed and held the power switch after plugging the AC back in and held it until I heard a beep, maybe 10+ sec. Of course I knew this worked because I could hear the iMac coming on quietly but making normal noises the moment I touched and held the power button. Now the system is working great again and I,m not looking at bringing it into a service center for no reason and injected more possible problems. I started another topic on the power on issue but I just wanted to document what I found and make it easier for someone else to get a search hit on a solution.
Here's the other thread and hope it helps someone else.

Do a SMC reset and if that doesn't fix it back to the store you go!
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • IMAC G5 Fans Cycle approximately every 5 to 10 minutes to higher speed

I have a 4 year old iMAC G5 which just started ( about 2 weeks ago) cycling the fan speed to high about every 5 to 10 minutes. I have checked using iStat the temps and the fan speeds, and the temps seem no different than they were before. I have checked to make sure there is no apps hogging CPU. I do notice that the fan cycling seems to happen with Safari 4 open. I have also reset the power control by unplugging all cables and power up the machine while holding in the on off switch and plugging in power cable. The machine has the latest software updates so I am at a bit of a loss as to what might be the problem baring a hardware issue.

If your model is NOT the iSight model, then you will be able to remove the back cover to clean off the accumulated dust from the fans. See Knowledge Base Article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300205 iMac G5 DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Instructions for your model G5 iMac.
