IMac hooked up to my Hi Fi receiver

Hi
I wanted to be able to listen to all my digital itunes library on my Hi Fi system so i bought a cable at monoprice(PREMIUM 15FT 3.5mm Stereo Male to 2RCA Male 22AWG Cable - Gold Plated) to hook up my iMac to the receiver.
I notice that when i do not play any music, there is always this buzz/sound on the background that i do not have when i use the iMac built in speakers.
Does anybody have a solution to remove this annoying parasite sound?
Thank you very much

This one is a decent thing (I have that at home to hook an AirportExpress into my Stereo): http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=73347.0 (you'll need two 6.5mm headphone to cinch adaptors for the output)
Those look decent too (the 2nd looks rather small and can be hid behind your amp). I don't know either myself, but I somehow like the small one, because it has a decent converter chip and can be hidden behind the amp:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260512243085
If you want to spend more (probably worth it if your iMac is your primary source of music) I've only heard the best about this one, but it will probably only make sense if your receiver/amp itself is in the $1000+ ballpark:
http://www.computeraudiophile.com/Cambridge-Audio-DacMagic-Review
If your receiver/amp does have an spdif digital-in (i.e. just coax digital but not optical digital) a simple converter like this will do:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220527598143 (but really only if the amp has an spdif port)
When you buy the toslink cable, make sure it has one long and one short nose (as in the link Roger posted above).

After connecting my Apple TV this morning, I have no sound. It is hooked up to play through my television speakers. Any ideas on how to get sound? Also, I tried hooking it up through my surround receiver, but could not get it to come up on my ty screen, what can I do to correct this problem?

Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.
Also make sure that you have correctly mapped the input port on your sound system to the output, if you are unsure about how to do this, refer to the manual that came with your sound system.
Have you tried playing various content sources (i.e. podcasts, music, iTunes Store video, other video etc), do you have the same problem with all types of content? If you use optical you might also check that you can see a red light at the end of your optical audio cable. Is your optical audio cable plugged straight into your sound system, or does it go through a switch or other device?

  • Hooking up iPod to home stereo receiver?

Hi, all. I just bought my first iPod, a classic. I wanted to hook it up to my home stereo receiver, an NAD made back in '88. It has inputs for phono, tape, CD and video.
I went to my local Apple store and told the sales person I wanted to hook up my iPod to my receiver. He sold me a Belkin cable that goes from the headphone jack on the iPod to the RCA inputs on my receiver. Only problem is, I can't figure out how to make it work. So far I have questions:
    1. Which input should it go into--tape, CD or video?
    2. How loud should I set the volume on the iPod?
    3. Do I need to do anything with the "settings" such as the EQ or "clicker"?
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a dozen times in the past month. I ran some searches here before I posted. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    John

Whichever one makes the most sense for you (and is free to use). I'm assuming all the inputs are identical apart from the labelling to match the input selector on the front of the unit.
Hi, iBod, thanks for your answers.
The only thing I'm still unsure of is the assumption that all the inputs are identical in terms of the voltage or amperage that they can accept. For example, I know that the phono input is designed for a signal that needs preamplification and the tape input is designed for a signal that doesn't. I'm not sure about the CD and video inputs, and what I want to avoid is having the iPod damage the receiver with too much amperage or voltage or whatever.
    Anyone know for sure?

  • When attempting to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, I receive the message "This disk is used for Time Machine Backups" when I try to select the lone available hard drive.

When attempting to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, I receive the message "This disk is used for Time Machine Backups" when I try to select the lone available hard drive.  I have ensured that Time Machine is turned off.  Upon some Google research, some who reported this problem were told to delete the folder backup.backupdb, but I do not have this folder on my Mac.  Any suggestions?

The folder would be at the root of your hard drive. Double-click Macintosh HD and look there.
If it isn’t there, I’m not sure what it is seeing.

    Hi,
I also have a similar issue since upgrading from the 4s to the 5s.
The issue I have is, issue number 2:" If I do receive a text message/iMessage notification, it disappears within 5-10 minutes before I can even check (no other notifications disappear)"
Which also consists of the same events in the last message from monicash "So for example, if i get a text while sleeping... i wake up in the morning to check my notifications and there is nothing there because it disappeared (even though there should be a notification there with my current settings that are ON)."

Ok.  I've answered my own question.  For anyone else with difficultites with a receiver, please read.
    1. HDMI connection has sound, so despite the manual's dirction that you need an optical cable for sound, this is incorrect.
    2. When connecting an HDMI cable from Apple TV to a receiver, you often need to "assign" the input on the receiver.  On my Denon AVR-590, I need to o under the menu settings, then assign the input to Apple TV.
Example:  I have run the HDMI cable from Apple Tv to my receiver, HDMI input #2.  I then go the the menu option on the reciever and assin the HDMI #2 to being active.
That's all I needed.  Hope this may help someone out there!  danny

  • IMac hooked up to HDTV - display and colours

    Hi
I have hooked up my iMac to my HDTV Panasonic TC 26LX70
It works pretty well, i have 2 issues though:
Each time i hook up the imac to the hdtv, the display for my imac changes automatically. I tried to find the good setting in systems preferences but so far nothing great. I still have the display of the imac re-initializing eah time
The colours on the HDTV are not as good as on the iMac screens, they are more "HDTV" like, too bright, too flashy. How can i get the same ones than on the mac?
Please I would appreciate your opinions
    Thx

If you have it set to +Mirror Displays+ in System Preferences Displays pane Arrangement tab, you should uncheck that setting. Then, the two screens together will show an extended Desktop, as represented in the diagram on that preference pane, and you will be able to set the resolution on the two screens independently. So you can use the optimum settings for each screen; the standard HD resolution for most HDTVs is 1920x1080 (1080p).

  • My husband and I both have email accounts on my iMac using Mavericks. Often we both receive an the same emails. If one of us opens the email on their account it automatically considers the email as read on both accounts. I would like to change this.

My husband and I both have email accounts on my iMac using Mavericks. Often we receive the same emails. Now when one of us opens an email that has been sent to both of us, Mavericks considers the email as read on both accounts. Mountain Lion did not operate this way. Can I change this? Thanks

By the sounds of it you have linked Email Accounts, if so this means that you will both recieve the majority of the same Emails, and if you do and you read them on your account (which is linked with your husbands) then they will appear to read on the both of them because they are linked. With the majority of Email providers these days they're Emails are (simplified) in the cloud you could say, meaning that if you read or delete shared Emails then it will do the same on both accounts rather than just the yours.
I hope all that made sense, sorry that I couldn't be of anymore assistance.. If you havent already try googling your problem - you may find some answers on there

  • Hooking up MBP to home theater receiver: Surround sound for games?

I'm looking for a way to hook up my MBP to my home theater receiver to play games in surround sound. From what I've read, it sounds like the digital optical out will only provide 5.1 sound for DVDs, not games.
I have also read about the Griffin Firewave which supposedly provides 5.1 sound from the firewire port...however, it looks like there are five separate outputs from that device (center, and both front and rear speakers), and my receiver's inputs are not arranged in this way, so I don't think this will work for my setup.
Anyone know of a way to do this successfully? It's looking like it's not possible, but wanted to see if there were any solutions I was missing. Thanks!

In as much as this is really not a "Using Mac OS X Leopard" forum problem but more of an iMac display issue why not post in the appropriate iMac hardware forum?

  • IMac Compatibility w/Yamaha RX-N600 Network Receiver via CAT5 LAN?

I just purchased the new Yamaha RX-N600 6.1 Channel Network Home Theater Receiver. While I could have purchased the optional Yamaha YDS-10 iPod Dock, my iMac G5 already has all of my iTunes playlists, so I was hoping that I could connect the two through my CAT5 ethernet LAN system in my house. Upon reading the instruction book (after I opened the box) it states that I need to upload Windows Media Connect 2.0 from Microsoft's website onto my PC. Great. Going to that website, there does not appear to be any version available for Macs.
Assuming the Yamaha is not compatible w/iMacs (although the optional iPod Dock would seem to suggest otherwise), is Airport Express my only other option? Would Airport Express still allow me to use my CAT5 ethernet LAN?
FYI: Yamaha's website states: "Using a local area network (LAN) connection and Windows Media Connect technology ver.2 or better, Yamaha Network enabled receivers allow you to play MP3, WMA and WAV music from up to four (4) PC’s. The receiver can even be used as a client for Yamaha’s MusicCAST home music server, seamlessly integrating with the MCX-2000 digital audio server within your LAN. The Network Receiver also provides the ability to listen to any of the thousands of stations available on Internet radio when connected to a broadband Internet connection. By using the included vTuner data service that is enabled, looking for content on the Internet couldn’t be easier, from your favorite Rock, Pop, or R&B to Podcasts that cater to your music interests. Yamaha Network Receivers get you connected to the vast music content available anywhere on your LAN and on the web."
Any suggestions/idea/hints/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Will iMac work with Chromecast on a stereo receiver?

I see Google Chromecast dongles at Costco for $27.  I've never once streamed audio to any device, but I'm thinking this low price might be my reason to try streaming music from my iMac to my Onkyo receiver - which has an HDMI-in on the back.
Does it work that easily?  Plug the dongle into the Onkyo, set up some prefs, click play on iTunes and the music comes out the stereo?
Or is there some insurmountable format differences between Macs and Chromecast that causes them to not work together?

nah I don't see it being a good way or maybe even possible way
I have the chromecast and you activate it from chrome the browser there is an icon and you cast the browser tab to the hdmi port
other apps then chrome support it too like plex and others but all really circle around it being a visual thing so if you can get it to work
by proxy by a receiver acting the role of the middle man to get audio sounds like a freak chance which even if worked would likely not work
for many generations of software updates
so as I see it chrome cast is no cheap alt to airport express for airplay or logitech for their version or cronos

  • Cannot send email on iMac OS 10.8.5, but can receive email fine

    Hi there,
I cannot send email (SMTP) from my iMac OS 10.8.5, email version 6.6
I have checked all the settings and they are exactly the same as my MacBook Pro OS 10.8.5, email version 6.6
Email works absolutely fine on MacBook Pro (POP and SMTP) but only incoming (POP) works on my MacBook and not the outgoing (SMTP)
    Any ideas?
I have deleted all email accounts and set them up again, but that hasn't worked. I've tried changing ports per instruction sfrom godaddy (who hosts my email), but no luck.
As I said, all settings are the same as the MacBook Pro which works fine.
This is driving me insane, so any help would be most welcomed please.
    Many thanks,
    Lisa

It is also refusing to send from a gmail account as well. But here's the original POP account I am most concerned about:

  • IMac Startup Mysteriously Turns On Sony Stereo Receiver

Yup. That's right. Every time I start up my new 24" iMac, my 10-year-old Sony home theater system switches on as well, right after the chime. There are no wires or any other kind of connection between the two. There are no peripherals attached. They face each other in the same room, with about 15' between them. I'm guessing that it's some kind of IR remote control thing, but it still doesn't make any sense to me.
Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea what's going on here? It's driving me crazy!

Have no idea really but try "pairing" your remote and the iMac.
