IMac - I get a black, grey, light blue or white screen sometimes

This has never happened to me before.
I wasn't doing anything unusual (browsing the web) when suddenly my screen turned all black. I tried to do all possible things, like putting the computer to sleep, hit random keys, or wait a while, but finally I had to restart.
I'm not sure why this happened and was hoping it would happen again.
I started a game and then, suddenly, the same thing happened, but with a grey screen. As you can see, this grey screen also has vertical lines:
http://imageshack.us/a/img267/2347/img7244m.jpg
After restarting the computer, I launched the game again. A minute after starting it, the image of the game started to go crazy, until the screen turned all light blue, with the vertical lines again:

A few seconds later it turned white:

Does anyone know what the problem is with my Mac? Why does this happen? I thought it may be related to the game, but the first time when it went black, I was browing the web. I hope it isn't some kind of Virus. I know they're rare on Mac, but you never know.
I'm mentioning this because yesterday or so I downloaded an app, which is the Sendspace Wizard. Basically it's a tool to upload files to Sendspace.com. It's by far the most honest file sharing service I had used, and I've been using it for 5 years now. But you never know... I had to download this app because I have videos of a concert of a friend, it's 700 MB and this app continues broken downloads. One of the files is at 99% but it doesn't list it as finished, it's stuck there. It's very strange, I thought I should mention it as it may be related. Usually I don't like all those uploading serives etc.
Another thing I was thinking of: the Mac was pretty hot. Usually it only becomes hot when I play the game that I have. But this time I wasn't. I heard that when it's too hot, it shuts down itself. So I thought it already did while I was browing (for whatever reason, maybe because the Sendspace tool was uploading all day long already and thus the computer was tired?) and then as I launched the game it turned it off as well because it became even hotter.
Here the specs: iMac 27" Intel Quad Core i5 3.1 Ghz 32 GB RAM, OSX 10.8.2
All help is appreciated !!! Hope it's nothing serious

Anyone know? :(

Just turned on my MBP 2007 and the screen gets stuck on the light blue before the normal log in page comes. Any Clues?
Worked fine last night. It's running Snow Leopard.

Does your iMac fail to boot every time or only some of the time?  Here are some things to try:
    - Boot into "safe mode", which will run the equivalent of Disk Utility's "repair disk" operation.
    - Boot from the system install disc that came with that Mac with the "D" key held down to run the diagnostics.  Run them several times to see if any hardware problems are reported.
    - If you can't identify the problem or fix it any other way, download and install the OS X 10.6.7 "combo" updater.
    - If that still doesn't help, try reinstalling OS X 10.6 over the top of what's on the disk.

  • My ipad gets a black bar over part of the screen then freezes up, please help

Just today my 16gb ipad 2 ,bought in December 2011, started to get a black bar over part of the screen.  Sometimes 3/4 of the screen sometimes 1/4 then it freezes up and will not do anything.  If I try to reboot it I get a faint backlit only.  Any help would be appreciated!

On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Toggle Documents & Data off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
On the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data then reselect it then restart your iMac.

Hi, I have an iMac which I just booted up and have a white screen with a blue folder with a question mark blinking on and off. Any help would be appreciated. Tommy

That means your iMac could not find a system to use for startup.  That may mean the internal hard drive has become faulty, or the hard drive mechanism is fine, but the startup volume ("Macintosh HD" unless you renamed it) may have some type of data corruption that makes it unbootable.
First, you should try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, use this procedure to reset SMC (power management).  If your iMac is from 2008, this is the procedure for Intel (not PowerPC) Macs.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
(This forum category is for "iMac (PPC)," so if this iMac is older (with a PowerPC processor), please post back.)
Disconnect all peripheral devices.  When you connect it back to power, if you have been using a power strip of some type, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet, by itself (at least initially).  Start up with nothing but the power cord connected, then add only standard mouse and keyboard.  If it works, run it that way for a while.
If PRAM and SMC reset have no effect, you should insert your Mac OS X installation disc (for the currently installed system) in the optical drive, and restart with the C key held down.  This should get you to the Installer screen, where you can run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
In Disk Utility, does the internal hard drive appear in the sidebar?  If so, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to the First Aid tab.  Use Repair Disk.  If an error is found, note if Disk Utility was able to fix it or not.
You can then quit Disk Utility and attempt to restart normally.

  • Od classic  all i'm getting on the display is a blank white screen, itunes recognizes it but is only displaying 127gb free even though it's empty and should be 148gb free

after replacing both the logic board and hard drive on my ipod classic all i'm getting on the display is a blank white screen itunes recognizes it after a restore but is only displaying 127gb free instead of 148gb. the hard drive is a brand new 160gb the logic board came from a working 6th gen 120gb ipod classic

    Will,
"I thought you bought the entire display and had two LVDS cables?"
Right, but I mean I think the connector on the logic board might be detached/broken. When I tested the old display, I completely removed the new one, cables and all, and connected the old one with the original LVDS cable. So these symptoms are independent of the lcd/cables that I use.
Yes that socket could be bad and this:
Even the random distorted coloration on the cracked lcd was replaced by blank whiteness.
would point to that problem. Did you try messing with that connector when it's powered up?
I'm not sure I follow. By "completely black screen" I meant no backlight...
Detached GPU a.k.a ball grid array ATi chip:
    -computer boots, with chime
    -distortions in color
    -flickering lines
-cycling through red, green and blue
-ultimately a blank screen (but still backlit?)
I have an ATI 9200 GPU chip that failed in a way I call "black moving shadows"
Detached U28 chip the Danes mounted a complaint about:
-computer will not boot, no chime
    -loud constantly whirring fan
Right that pin 15 I talked about. Relatively easy to solder back.
-maybe will boot if clamped on left of trackpad, but with intermittent graphical distortions
No there would be no graphic anomalies in this failure and clamping left of the track pad is a problem since that's where the hard drive is. The pressure should go on U28 as indicated in the Cory Arnold site better resolder pin 15.
I guess I just want to get this all sorted out for posterity.
OK. If you hit a wall you could send it up here and I'll take a look.

  • Have an iMac 2008/09 on starting today I have a white screen, an apple icon and a constant rotating sun, nothing else. I've tried turning off and disconnecting and reconnecting the power lead with the same results. Any thoughts? Many thanks Matt

Have a 2008/9 iMac on starting up today I have only a white screen, apple icon and a continuous  revolving sun. Have tried turning off and on and disconnecting and reconnecting the power with no affect - any thoughts or advice please. Thanks Matt

If your iMac came w/system DVDs, do the following:
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your DVD that originally came w/the iMac while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

imac 21inch 2010 on boot vertical green lines then white screen ,will not load can anyone help please

    Howdy carliosa,
If your iMac is not starting up normally you may need to do some checking to make sure things are working correctly. I would suggest starting with the steps in this article -
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support

  • IMac 27' (year 2010 - Snow Leopard) won't boot - white screen only

    Hi,
my 2010 iMac 27in running Snow Leopard won't start - when I switch it on, I can hear the chime, the screen goes white and gets stuck at this (no Apple logo, no question mark, no mouse pointer). I have waited for minutes but it's definitely stuck.
When there is a DVD in (tried both OSX Instal and Apps Instal), I can hear the drive reading for a few seconds, then it goes silent.
I have found a few similar topics in this and other forums - the issue was solved or helped by entering one of the special boot modes via keyboard shortcuts upon startup. In my case though, none of these shortcuts work - with the sole exception of Cmd+Alt+P+R to reset the NVRAM. What I tried was: C, D, Alt, Eject, N, T, Shift, Cmd-V, Cmd-S ...none of them has any effect.
I learned there are some issues with a wireless keyboard when using these shortcuts, so I got a USB one to rule that out - but it didn't help.
In the beginning, I heard "clicking" noise I am not used to hearing - so I suspect a HDD failure but it would surprise me the machine would not indicate that in some better way than a blank white screen. The clicking then went away - could be after I did the NVRAM reset - not sure.
I also performed an SMC reset by unplugging the power cord for a while - no effect.
As per one recommendation, I tried NVRAM reset a few times in a row. Didn't help but, interestingly, I found that after 3 such resets, holding D will eject the DVD (without the 3 resets, "D" won't do it). Prior to that I had no way of getting the DVD out.
The computer was running fine before I switched it off for the night on the previous day. There was no system update, no change I am aware of.
The only thing beyond default is extra RAM but that has been there for months now without problems (and just to be super sure, I removed the modules but no effect).
At this point I have run out of ideas - any suggestions are very welcome.

  • 2010 iMac 21.5 won't boot up , froze at white screen! HELP!

Hi, everyone I need help! This morning the batteries ran out in my wireless magic mouse so I put in new batteries... Then all of a sudden by computer began to freeze and the colorful pin wheel began to spin and it was unresponsive! As my mouse couldn't get connected to my Mac ...
Every time I start my Mac It won't load past the white screen :(
And so I turned off my iMac and restarted it, it turned on and I heard the chime, it looked ok although it froze at the apple logo for 4 mins and a loading bar came under it and then as it finished loading the apple logo disappeared and the whole screen just went bright white and it just freezes, I can't use it !
Although when I boot up my iMac in safe mode it starts after about 10 minutes ...  And everything appears ok  just laggy but I guess that's what safe modes like, well anyway I went into disk utility and I verified the disk and permissions and repaired the disk and all that... And still nothing works, i also tried resetting the PRAM and still nothing has fixed it
My Mac is backed up with time machine, although when I bought my iMac it only came with snow leopard and now it's running lion... Although my friend installed it onto my computer a week or two after lion came out . And it's been perfect until now...
Please help! I don't know what to do next!

Ok now when I turn on my Mac, I don't even hear the chime, just displays a white screen. That's it, please someone help me I'm desperate here, In less than 5 days my warranty is over! :(

  • Upgraded imac to mavericks, now won't boot, stuck on white screen then reboots in a loop

i have a imac that i upgraded to mavericks, it wont boot up now, sticks on white screen for a while the reboots and sticks again, if i reinstall osx will it delete all my data- i tried to start the new install in recovery mode but it kep saying incorrect username and/or password, but i ts not incorrect and when i hit the forgot password link nothing happens

If you can get it to boot once the first thing you should do is backup all your data using Time Machine or better yet create a Bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. What Apple says to do to trouble shoot is in Gray screen appears during startup.
I would also recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, if no errors appear the first time run the test 2-3 more times. Each Extended Mode test will take 30-60 minutes.

  • When i turn my macbook pro on I get a green apple then just a white screen

When I turn my macbook pro on I get a green and white lined apple then just a white screen anyone help please ?

    Hey there Petecaswell,
It sounds like you are seeing a green Apple logo, and then a white screen before the computer boots to your user. I would start by updating your computer:
OS X: Updating OS X and Mac App Store apps
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338
Then if the issue persists, I would perform a PRAM reset:
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Brief water contact; black apple logo blinking/flashing white screen

Ok, this idiot didn't take his phone from his pocket & it briefly was water submerged. Maybe 20 seconds; feeling stupid about it.
Phone has been in a bag of (uncooked) rice for a solid 48hrs. I thought that was long enough to plug phone into lightening cable charger into USB port for  iTunes...saw a white screen black apple logo that is blinking/flashing. Immediately unplugged it & put back in bag of (uncooked) rice. Did not have it plugged in longer than a few seconds.
Suggestions other than make an appt. with the Genius bar?
Is flashing/blinking a significant sign of permanent damage?

No where near long enough. Should be 5-7 days normally.

Genius Bar appointment is the best alternative. More than likely the device is trash. You should be able to purchase an Out Of Warranty replacement.

  • Why would my ipod touch 4th generation be stuck on a blue and white screen

i need help finding out why my ipod touch has a white screen with a blue line on it. I was reading then it started changing different colors now its stck on a white and blue screen

Things like that sometimes just happen. To try to resolve try:
    - A reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Connect to computer and restore via iTunes.
    - If screen stil shows that, and yu could not restore, let the batttery full drain. After charging for an hour try the above again.

  • Imac crashes after 3 weeks!!!!  White screen of death-- Hard Drive died!??

    Good day fellow Apple-minded,
bought my missus a 27" Imac with a 1TB hard drive in the mighty United of States, just the other day.
I have become quite an Apple fan recently........mainly based on the high reliability compared to the products from Bill Gates and his henchmen.
HOWEVER, I was less impressed when the white "screen of death" appeared the other day while trying to boot up. It was night, so I spent a good few hours in this forum, trying to look for a solution.........before finally surrendering to bed.
The next morning to the Mac-doctor and he confirmed--> the Hard Drive--> R.I.P.
    After 3 weeks only!!
Luckily it will be changed under warranty etc, but still--> my question is: how common is this for the Imac?????
FYI: I flew the Imac out of the States, checking it in at the airline desk--> booboo??
    Thanks,
    MXP 150 Patriot

IMO, mere coincidence. Mechanical and electrical things break. When, no one knows. For HDs, normally within the first couple of months and then years later at their end of life. Since it's being replace under warranty, don't worry.
