  • Imac G5 will not start up correctly? invalid directory count 52 instead of 53

Hi, i have a Imac G5. it had been working fine for many years untill a year or 2 ago when it stopped all of a sudden and just would not start up as it should. instead, it went to this grey screen with horizontal lines. eventually after trying just about every combination of keys held down on startup, the only way i could get the mac to restart was by starting it in safe mode. (at this point i rescued all my photos and music and moved them onto my macbook pro) i thought it was working fine in safe mode untill i realised that it could not connect to the internet, the sound would not work at all, and when i went to preferances it could not find any output device for the sound. it also keeps coming up with a message saying that my internet communication device does not exist. allot of the programs worked fine, such as word, or photoshop, whereas others would not. i verified the disk, and discored that it would not let me repair it.

it should be 53 instead of 52)

it then came up with a message saying that he disk utility stopped verifying the macintosh hd because of it reporting the failure on exit.
i have tried doing this a few times but the exact same result is gained
i tryed using disk repair whilst starting up from the original install disk, but this also did not fix the problem. eventually, i decided to reinstall the os x 10.4.11. this had absolutely no effect, and i am at the same point. i would be very gratefull if anybody would be able to come up with any ideas of how i could fix this problem?
additional details: i have tried using the proxy reset
i have also tried running a apple hardware test
i have tried repairing the macintosh hd disk using the original install disks
also: all of the sockets at the back work fine, e.g. usb, but the microphone and headphone sockets do not work.
    it will read disks fine

but this also did not fix the problem. eventually, i decided to reinstall the os x 10.4.11. this had absolutely no effect,
I'd have guess you reformated at that time. The file system is messed up.  You need to reformat.
Format a disk using the installation DVD
To format  the startup drive, you will need to run disk utility from your installation DVD.

  • Notes App: I start a new note, start typing and the App creates numerous new notes every 3 seconds

Here is a strange problem I have with my Notes App which I am now using regularly in 10.8.2 since it syncs to all my Macs/iPad/iPhone:
I open the Notes App. I then wait for it to finish "Updating". I then add a New Note clicking the plus botton. As I type, after a couple of seconds it creates a new Note, so I have 2 notes. Then again as I keep typing - more notes. The "Top" Note has everything I typed and the ones below have 1 line less per Note! i.e. it saves a new note then moves on when I carry on typing!
This is a very strange problem and it is new to me - I have been using this App for the past few weeks with no problem.

Thanks for this, it really helped. I had just upgraded to 10.8 on this and the Notes app was installed - so it synced to my other Notes accounts.
The strange thing was that the default was to my Hotmail account even though I also have iCloud and Gmail accounts set up, too.
I have followed your suggestion and now only have iCloud Notes - and this works perfectly.
    Thanks!

  • IMac G5 will not start.

Hello folks, I believe I have quite a tricky problem.
I have an iMac G5 with OS X Snow Leopard (10.5.8) installed. This morning I went to reboot it all and re-install the OS, as it has been a long time since I had done so previously. This carried through well, and I proceeded to run boot camp assistant so as to partition my computer with Windows XP SP2.
It is at this point I should add that my disc drive on the mac is very faulty, and i have been using an external Samsung disc drive to install the software which has thus far seemed readable and compatible.
After putting the XP disc in and commencing installation, the computer restarted and did not recognise the disk. When I tried again, the computer restarted to the point where I was blocked by alternating images of the apple logo and a no permission symbol, as well as the occasional appearance of a folder with a question mark on it.
Now, I really need advice for simply how to get my computer to a point where i can start from absolute scratch. Unfortunately, I cannot do this as I can get no further than the original screen.
    I have tried the following:
Pressing 'c', to run through the disk.
Pressing 'x', as to force the start up mode.
Pressing 'shift', to enter safe mode.
Pressing 'cmd' and 's', which supposedly works occasionally.
Pressing 'alt', just in case it was confused between hard drives
Pressing 'cmd', 'ctrl', 'r' and 'p', which again is supposedly useful.
Unplugging from the socket for hours on end.
Unplugging all external connections to the iMac.
I have quite frankly, exhausted all my ideas. If any of you have any insight, it would be greatly appreciated. Remember that my disk drive is external, as i believe that part of the problem rests there.

    Hi Aaron,
When the family first got the computer (I inherited it, hence my need to run Windows OS primarily), it had the Tiger OS, meaning I had to install bootcamp separately so as to put Windows on. However, a few years later, we bought the Snow Leopard system and it had bootcamp in the program already, so it just made the process more convenient. As well as this, installing Windows or rebooting it had never been a problem.
Unfortunately, I do not have anything to use FireWire with. I have an iPod, but no other products in which to connect. I say this because somebody said that when they received the rror symbols, connecting it with a MacBook Pro through FireWire seemed to do the trick. However, I do not have this resource at my disposal.
I honestly believe that if my disk drive functioned correctly, therw would not be a problem, but perhaps the Mac can't quite adopt the external drive while in its preliminary loading stages. Getting the drive itself fixed would cost more than the value of the actual computer, so I do not wish to do that.
I am trying to put the disk on a USB, so as to try and reboot it all through that, though it seems improbable. However, I will ddefinitely let you know how that works out.
Thanks for your reply by the way, if you suddenly come up with any new ideas, please let me know!

  • Intel imac (white) will not start up, please help.

I have a 20" intel imac (white not silver) running 10.6.4.
I can not get it to boot up on its own, the farthest it gets is to the Silver Apple with spinning gear.
    I have tried:
    1. safe restart - the result is - I get a circle with slash and the a folder with ? and then the silver apple with gear spinning.
    2. booting from disk warrior and running it - the result I get is -"The new directory cannot replace the original directory because of a disk malfunction."
    3. reinstalling the OS from the start up disk, - the result I get is - "The contents of this disk can't be changed."
    4. starting from the OS 10.6 disk and running Disk utilities - the result I get is - "Invalid node structure, The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely. Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk." When I hit repair button I get this result, "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
All of these methods have failed me. Can anyone please help me? I really need to be able to at least recover some files from the imac. That is my main concern at this point.
    Thanks in advance.

The problem is I can not get my HD to boot up, I can start up with the install disk but disk utilities can not repair the disk. I can not dragNdrop, it wont let me select files. I can not reinstall the OS because it says their is a problem with my drive. It sounds like I'm screwed but my business related info is to important to just give up.
I was able to make a disk image of a folder that had I few files I need and was able to copy that disk image to my external drive. So I may have to do that (tideous but I am willing to do that to recover the data).
Any other thoughts before I take it somewhere?

  • IMac G4 will not start up from OS disk to upgrade

I am trying to upgrade the OS in a G4 iMac, the OS disk is recognized, am asked to restart, but it will not restart from the OS 10.5 disk.

Will it boot from the install disc that came with the G4?  If so, run
    Disk Utility
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
After that, reset the PRAM  and see if that helps.
    Please post back with results,

  • PERSONAL WEB SHARING ON iMAC G5 WILL NOT START

    hello:
i am hoping someone would be able to help me on this issue. i attempted to start the Personal Web Sharing service on my computer (iMAC G5 with MAC OS 10.4) from System Preferences > Sharing. however, after i highlight Personal Web Sharing on the list of services and click the Start button, the message changes to "web sharing starting up..." and simply remains that way (i've waited for a long time). it does not change to "web sharing on".
am i doing something wrong? is it possible that my Apache installation has been compromised? my goal is to be able to use my computer to create and run .php web pages.
any help / suggestions are greatly appreciated
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry, this still doesn't seem to be working.
Actually, it's me steering you wrong. It's been a while since I fooled around with the Entropy PHP installation and it looks like he's changed it.
He used to put the configuration stuff for PHP at the bottom of the main Apache config file, but now he's putting it in that separate file in the httpd users directory. That's why moving the default Apache configuration file into place didn't help.
You have two choices: one is to just forget about the PHP5 stuff for now and go with Apple's default PHP install. The other is to try to get PHP5 up and running.
The first option is very easy: just run this command:
<pre class="command">mv private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf ~/Desktop</pre>That will put the offending file on the desktop. Now try starting the web server. Most likely, PHP won't work yet, but Apache should start. In order to use the default PHP5, you need to make some changes to the httpd.conf file. You can use pico in the Terminal. It's pretty simple and the key commands are printed at the bottom. Where you see the up arrow listed, that means to use the "control" key, i.e., "control"-x to exit. You need to use sudo, though so you have root privileges:
<pre class="command">sudo pico /etc/httpd/httpd.conf</pre>Search ("control"-w) for "php". The first line you'll see is this:
<pre class="command">#LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so</pre>Uncomment it by removing the "#" from the start of the line. Search again until you find this line:
<pre>#AddModule mod_php4.c</pre>Again, remove the "#". Now search again until you find these lines:
    <pre class="command"><IfModule mod_php4.c>
    # If php is turned on, we repsect .php and .phps files.
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
    AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
    # Since most users will want index.php to work we
    # also automatically enable index.php
    <IfModule mod_dir.c>
    DirectoryIndex index.html index.php
    </IfModule>
</IfModule></pre>Just verify that they look like these. If they don't, copy and paste your corresponding lines into a reply. Now stop and restart the web server and see if PHP pages will work. You should be using OS X's built-in 4.x version.
If, on the other hand, you'd rather use the Entropy PHP5 installation, post back and tell me and we'll see if we can figure out what's up with that...

  • IMac DV does not start up

iMac DV with OS X 10.3.something that has been working fine for a long time.
Now when I push the power button, it begins the start-up process, it gets to the screen with the apple silhouette. At the bottom of the screen is an icon of some marks in a circle (not the colored pinwheel) that keeps rotating forever.
I booted from the Hardware test disc (by holding down C). The tests ran and everything seemed OK.
I booted from Install Disc 1 of Panther 10.3 . It warns me that I have a later version of the OS installed. It offers me the option of moving the current system folder to Previous System, and reinstalling. That looks like my only path forward.
Does anyone have any better ideas?
    tomG.

    Tom,
That would be an "archive and install" if puts your current system in a folder and installs a fresh one. There's always an inherent danger in any install. You could use FireWire mode to back up anything on the drive you don't want to lose.
Otherwise an archive and install will probably solve your problem.
The question is why this happened. While you're in the installer open disk utility and check SMART status your hard drive might be going bad. If not you could repair permissions from there and also verify the disk.
Then resetting PRAM and NVRAM in open firmware could get you back.

  • IMac (mid 2007) not starting up - HELP!!!

I'm hoping someone has some advice that means I can fix this for less than the iMac cost me...!!!
I shut my iMac down last night, and it was running without any issues. This morning I pressed the power button and the screen remains black. There is a faint noise of the fan turning but no beeps and nothing else.
Worth noting that I added 2GB of RAM to the default 1GB supplied originally. This was as a result of the computer crashing when I was running too many programs (typically Handbrake). This upgrade did the trick and has been running without issue for about a month.
In addition, I turned on the computer about a week ago and got the blue screen of death. Reinstalled OSX from the disk and that rectified the problem.
I have no idea if this issue is related to anything that has gone before but I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary last night to have caused it.
I have done a lot of forum searching this morning and tried a couple of things with no joy:
    - Removed power cable for 5 mins and reconnected
    - Removed and replaced the RAM, including just trying the original 1GB chip
But nothing seems to be making any difference. I fear it will need to go back to Apple but thought I'd post and see if anyone out there had any recommendations to try?
    Any advice really appreciated.
If there's any info I've failed to add then please post and I'll add.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the comments. Now resolved - took into the Genius Bar yesterday and the chap wasn't sure and said 3-4 weeks to send away for repair. At which point my wallet shuddered! Dropped off at 3pm, got a call at 7.30pm to say it was fixed.
Transpires it was a combination of a lot of dust inside, and a couple of the cables needed "moving" whatever that might mean. I don't really care as for £47 I am now typing this from a Mac and not Windows 7. Woo hoo.
Anyway, thought I'd post the solution in case anyone has a similar issue down the line.

  • IPhoto does not start up after upgrading

On my new iMac iPhoto does not start up after migrating. Upgrade from iPhoto 6/Snow Leopard > Lion 10.7.1 with iPhoto 9.1.5. When the conversion is finished I can see the new library, it works allright. And with packet-inspection (or how is that called in English) all maps & data seems to be OK; I can check the seperate pics.
But: iPhoto won't start up a second time (grey screen with infinite spinning wait cursor). The same thing is happening when I add a new library and drop in some pictures.
    What can cause this problem?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Brand new iMac 24 inch does not start

I went to best buy and bought the 24 inch 2.66 GHz iMac. We loved it when the apple guy gave us a demo. I brought the brand new iMac home and set it up. Pushed the power button - IMac does not power on. Tried diff options like changing plug socket, extension cord, removed and replaced power supply from back of iMac, but didnt work.
After an hour, I took the thing back to Best buy and they replaced it with a new one. Now this new one started right away and we really love this computer. Browed until late night, put it on sleep before going to sleep. Woke up in the morning, checked email and did some more browsing before I put it back to sleep and went to take a shower. After I come back and try to turn it ON, it wont turn ON. No matter what I did except this time I did not remove the power supply from the back of the Mac.
I called in for apple support as I was extremely concerned. The support guy asked me to hold the power button for 5 secs and try to power it back again. Nothing, didnt work. Next he asked me to remove all connections as well as the power supply from the back of the Mac and then turn it on. Lo and behold, came back up.
I asked the support guy as to what the heck is the problem and if this type problem has been reported earlier - he said he cannot comment on that. I really like this computer, but I am concerned as to its reliability. Anyone had similar problems? What was the problem and what did you do?

What the guy did was have you reset the SMC, the System Management Controller. It controls things like startups, shutdowns and sleeping.
Is the iMac plugged directly into a three prong wall outlet or are you using an extension cord or a cheat adapter? If you are using an extension cord, then it needs to be a proper three pronged utility cord and not a simple cord with a cheat adapter.

  • External startup disks will not start with my new iMac

My external devices which are startup disks will not start when connected to my iMac, although it appears in the bootable drive selections after the chime sound, using the option (Alt) key. I get the bootable drive selections and when selecting it all I get is a gray screen with the apple logo and that is it. No matter how long I wait the start up does not happen. I am sure that the external device is not damaged because there is no problem to use it as a startup device when connected to my MacBook Pro.
Otherwise the devices work as they should. If I connect them to my iMac then they will appear on the desktop, etc. The only thing which does not work is that they cannot be used as startup disks, even though they work fine as startup disks if connected to my MacBook Pro.

Based on your description it is very hard to tell what is going on.
You appear to have an i7 iMac. That model was delivered with Snow Leopard (10.6.x).
My guess is that your external disks may have a version of OS X that predates the version supplied with your new iMac. You cannot run an earlier version of OS X than what was delivered with your Mac.

  • Our brand new quad core imac will not start up.  We hear a drive and fan noise but the screen remains black. Any suggestions?

The computer shut down on its own while we were gone and will not start up again.  When we press the power button we hear drive and fan noises but no chime and the screen remains black.  Any suggestions?

A pretty common thing for computers that have been shipped is a RAM chip becoming dislodged just enough to cause what you are describing. Try re-seating your RAM chips. Basically just pull them out and push them back in. Take a look at this article if you need some direction on this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
