IMac i7 won't go to sleep when idle

I've had my Mac for a couple of months now and this problem's persisted – my iMac won't go to sleep when idle (yes, I've checked my Energy Saver settings).
The screen saver comes on and shortly after display goes to sleep, but the computer never does; the fans are clearly still on. I've tried changing my settings so that the display and computer fall asleep after one minute (ie the minimum Energy Saver preferences allows). As usual, the display goes to sleep but the computer doesn't.
If I prompt it to go to sleep via the Apple menu or the power button, it doesn't have any problems going to sleep and waking up. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had tried everything in various help forums including the Please Sleep application to no avail. My problem was that my screensaver would not engage automatically nor would the computer go to sleep automatically. I could use the hot corner function for the screensaver or the Apple menu to put it to sleep. I finally found the above referenced link and followed the directions and now my screensaver and sleep functions work like they used to.

My computer won't go to sleep when I close the lid. I tried restarting which fixed it at first but then a few hours later it started doing it again. This has been happening for about a week now. It only goes to sleep when I manually select it from the Apple menu. Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • Mac not sleeping when idle?

Hello, my Mac isn't sleeping when idle.
I went in Terminal and typed in: pmset -g assertions (got that from http://www.adeepbite.com/lion-seems-having-insomnia-it-doesnt-sleep-easily/ )
    This is my result:

How can I get it to sleep without unplugging it from my computer?

I just did the pmset -g assertions command again, and here's what I found:
       PreventUserIdleSystemSleep   0 <--
    But ExternalMedia had 1
And I checked to see if the headphones were causing it, but nope, so I figured out its not my headphones.
I will get back to you to see if it sleeps.

  • HT1338 Imac won't wake from sleep when a facetime call comes in

My Imac will not awake from sleep when a FaceTime call comes in.

I've had this problem several times now, and I do no own MobileMe. I don't use any bluetooth peripherals, but I've noticed that the precursor to the problem is that my bluetooth icon in the menubar goes from normal to "Bluetooth Unavailable." Then at some point later on, I put the iMac to sleep and it won't wake up.
I've read elsewhere that the bluetooth unavailable problem may be connected to the power management unit, which may in turn explain what is going on with it not rebooting. But I'm not sure.

  • My macbook pro won't go to sleep when I close the lid

I've been having this problem for a couple of years now, and it's getting pretty annoying.
I got this MacBook Pro in April of 2011. Otherwise, it works great. It goes to sleep when I go up to the apple menu and select "sleep." BUT, when I close the lid, it stays on. Heaven forbid I don't have it plugged in, because then the battery will be shot! It also won't go to sleep automatically when I leave it for a long time. Yet another potential battery drain.
How do I fix it so that it goes to sleep automatically when I close the lid and when I leave it alone for a while?
In Energy Saver, I have checked all the boxes necessary: "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" "Wake for network access" and "Automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep."
Am I missing something here, or does my computer just have a defect?

    I had the same issue.
I used an external monitor but all of a sudden when I closed the lid my Macbook Pro did not go to sleep!
I solved the problem with a SMC reset.
    Try to do it...

  • MacBook won't go to sleep when connected to external monitor

    Dear all,
I have a MacBook connected to an external monitor via DVI to HDMI adapter. The MacBook is also connected to the power adapter and to an external aluminium Apple keyboard and a wired Mighty Mouse via USB. I use the computer with the lid closed. The problem is that, even though the system preferences are set to put the computer to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity, it won't go to sleep if it's connected to the external monitor, regardless of whether the monitor is on or off. Is this normal or is there a malfunction? If the latter, any ideas how to solve the problem?
    Best regards,

    Hello again, JasonFear,
Thank you for your help and I apologise for not having reply earlier, but I was trying and checking your suggestions. What I have done is safe booting my MacBook, and the problem disappeared, so I started tinkering with the login and the preferences. In the end, I replaced the preferences folder using a month-old version in Time Machine. And now, I don't know if my original problem was not external-monitor related or it is just that I have a different problem because, at the moment, the problem is like this:
My MacBook refuses to go to sleep by itself when iTunes (version 9.0.3)is open. However, I can make it go to sleep using the Apple menu, the keyboard or the remote control (pressing and holding the play button).
It doesn't matter if it's connected or not to the external monitor.
    I've checked this page
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
but the solution is not there. When iTunes is open, I make sure there is nothing playing or downloading (no song, no podcast). iTunes checks for new episodes of podcasts every hour, and the computer is set to go to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity.
    Any ideas?
    Best regards,
    Jobuscon

  • Macbook Pro won't go to sleep when lid closed

    Hello,
I'm sorry if this issue has been raised elsewhere, but despite numerous searches all I can find is people who want to stop their MacBook from going to sleep when the lid is closed. I have the opposite problem, I want my machine to go to sleep when the lid is closed, but it won't. I have a 2011 model MacBook Pro, with Yosemite installed. A couple of months ago the logic board failed and had to be fixed. I installed Yosemite before the failure, and the problem with the machine not going to sleep occurred then as well, so I don't think the problem is related to the hardware repair. Does anyone have any idea how I can make this machine go to sleep when I close the lid?
    Thanks,
    David.

I had the same issue on a Macbook Pro mid-2012. In my case when the display would go to sleep it would turn itself back on, display the login screen, go back to sleep and then repeat.
Reading through multiple posts I ended up with following observations/actions:
I ran pmset -g assertions and saw that the only thing that was set to keep my laptop awake was UserIsActive.
I checked my logs and noticed multiple entries for WindowServer: handle_will_sleep_auth_and_shield_windows: Deferring.
None of those gave me much information about what I can do. After that I read the post that fixed the problem:
I booted the laptop into safe mode. Waited for the display to sleep, woke it up and then restarted in normal mode. This seems to have fixed the problem for me so far.
Hope that might help someone else in the future.

  • Won't go to sleep when I close lid

I recently bought a Powerbook G4 Ti at a flea market with a broken screen that came with the replacement screen. I spent about 4 hours taking the powerbook lid apart and swapping out the screen (PAINFUL!) and after getting it all glued back together, there seems to be some problems with the lid-closed sensor. It doesn't seem to know when the lid is closed or opened because closing it doesn't put it to sleep and if I open it after sleeping and closing, it doesn't wake up. Does anyone know where the lid-closed sensor is on this model?

Hi, Beni_Rose. Sleep is activated by a tiny magnet attached to the back of the LCD panel. When the lid is closed, the magnet normally activates a magnetic switch in or under the trackpad or wrist rest, depending on the PB model. The following instructions pertain to most of the Tibooks: those with processors faster than 500MHz. If your Powerbook is the 400 or 500MHz model, post back for a different magnet location.
Using a small toy magnet or refrigerator magnet, hold it about 1.5 inches above the trackpad surface, over a point that is halfway between the center and the left edge of the trackpad and about an inch from the top edge of the trackpad. Slowly lower the magnet toward the trackpad until the Powerbook goes to sleep. If it does so, you'll know that the switch is functional, and in that case, the likelihood is that you didn't replace the magnet correctly (or at all) when you replaced your screen. Or possibly you used a screen from the 400 or 500MHz models, which have the magnet and switch in a different place. After what you've been through, I doubt that you'll consider it worthwhile to tear things apart again for the sake of getting the PB to sleep when you close it — it will be much simpler just to put it to sleep manually before closing it. The fact that it doesn't wake automatically when you open it is a blessing in disguise: it means the Powerbook can't wake up and cook itself to death inside your carrying case if the latch accidentally releases in there.

  • Powerbook won't wake from sleep when unplugged from power

    hi everyone,
    i have a 15" 1ghz titanium powerbook, running 10.4.6.
recently (maybe since 10.4.6?) i haven't been able to wake the machine from sleep when i unplug it from powering up in sleep mode, to open it up someplace else to run it on batteries for a little while. i always have to do a hard-reboot (holding down the startup button for several seconds). this usually destroys my dock and other preferences when i'm "back in".
does anyone know what might be causing this? it seems to be a recent development. it's unpleasant, because i frequently have the powerbook charge itself while asleep, and then i want to unplug it and quickly do something in another room running it on batteries. afaik sleeping and awakening works fine as long as i don't plug/unplug the power cable before waking it up.
any hints would be greatly appreciated...thank you!

    Hi A.L.,
I have a Cinema Display which I often use on the back of my Ti. I know the laptop will not wake if there is no power and it has an external DVI display attached.
Perhaps your computer thinks it has some monitor attached - perhaps checking the DVI port for damage would be worth it?

  • Computer Won't Go To Sleep When Closed

When I close my computer, it doesn't go to sleep, the light just stays on. This started last night -- my computer was open and I thought it was plugged in, but it wasn't so the power ran out. When I plugged it in, I had to wait a few minutes while the computer got a bit of charge (even plugged in) in order to turn on the computer. But since then, when I close it, it doesn't go to sleep. If I hit the power button and put the computer to sleep, it will stay sleeping when I close the computer. Any thoughts?

There are many possible reasons for this problem. Here one thread:

The best bet is, to check the error logs: open Console (Applications > Utilities) and paste here the last lines ... I am sure, there must be a daemon trying in vain to connect to the internet ...

  • PB not sleeping when idle

    Hi,
I have seen a similar problem on the boards but I have not found a solution, so I am posting my own question. My Rev. A PB 12" will not go to sleep if left alone when set on "Normal" in Energy Saver preferences. It will go to sleep if I close the lid or choose Sleep from the Apple menu. But for some reason it won't go to sleep on its own. Now here's the odd part: I did a PMU reset, and when I booted the computer afterwards and left it alone, it did go to sleep on its own, but all subsequent times, it didn't. I also tried resetting the PRAM, and again it did go to sleep on its own after the first reboot, but not on any subsequent times. I really don't know what else to do. I'm not sure what's causing the problem. I even turned off Airport thinking it was a network thing, but that didn't help. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Since no one responded to my question, and I had to struggle with it myself, I seemed to have found the answer to my problem. I discovered something very interesting: apparently, that strange cf#xxxxxx cache file that kept getting created/deleted in my ~/Library/Preferences folder is created by widgets. I turned off all my widgets, the file stopped being created, and the computer started sleeping on its own both on AC and DC power. I turned on each of my widgets one by one and discovered something else: when I turn on a widget (any widget - third party or Apple), that cache file gets created/deleted, but only for 3-4 cycles.
Then it stops. I found out that one of my third-party widgets apparently has a bug, and when it's turned on, that chache file gets created/deleted all the time. Once that particular widget was off, the computer went back to sleep normally. So I simply have to leave that widget off. What I'm not sure about, however, is whether or not the cache file creation/deletion thing is just due to that widget, or due to a bug in Dashboard, or both. The previous version of the widget in question seemed to work fine, so I suppose it is just the widget. So it looks like I solved this problem on my own, but I am posting this message in case anyone else has similar problems.

  • IMac G3 won't wake from sleep?

I have a iMac G3 500Mhz computer with 128Mb of ram and just recently added another 512Mb chip. My question is that my mac won't wake from a sleep, and when it is restarted it always goes to the disk aid whether the computer was shut down properly or not and that takes for ever. It never use to take so long. I also noticed that in some website, yahoo for instence it hangs while I try to receive my email. I have tryed to zap the pram I reconfigured my desktop I've fist aided it and it say's everythings fine. What could my problem be? I live in newfoundland and no one here know anything about macs. I had a guy over to try to fix an earlier problem but I think he made it worse. He uploaded a version of osx and I had os 9.1 but I couldn't retrieve any of my old files because it wouldn't classic share so I had to redo os 9.1 over everything. Could I have messed something up in the process to make my computer do all these funny things?

You should be able to get it from electronics stores (and probably from mega-computer stores) or from Radio Shack type stores. If they are charging more than $10, an online order may be cheaper even if there is a shipping charge. I have bought these batteries here with good results.

I don't have your type of iMac CRT, but it should be an easy replacement. You can find instructions online, or just ask here...
This article below lists things that are stored in PRAM, but people here have describe many different issues that where related to a weak or dead PRAM battery. Many had to do with startup issues.

  • Late 2009 iMac 27" won't go to sleep

I've got a problem on an iMac 27" end of 2009. When i put it to sleep it either wakes up straight away or goes black but HDD is running. Only keyboard is plugged in via USB and Magic Mouse is on bluetooth. The only suspicious console line after waking up is :
05.03.2012 15:15:39,000 kernel: Sound assertion "0 == fAudioEngineArray" failed in AppleHDADriver at line 3047 goto Exit
I disabled all internet sharing and WOL.
If i disable Wi-Fi and bluetooth nothing changes.  Please help! :-\

Look at the kernel log for likes that say "Wake reason =".  You will see a code.  Go to the following to find the meaning of the codes:
Determine Why Your Mac Wakes Up From Sleep
That may help shed light on why you machine is waking up.
If you cannot figure it out there's always utilities like PleaseSleep which try to force the system to obey the Energy Saver preferences.
Also, with respect to the Energy Saver preferences, make sure you don't have wake for network access checked.

  • Leopard 10.5.6 imac 24" won't wake from sleep

Hi - Recently my mac has stopped waking from sleep. This happens about 50% of the time and neither the keyboard or mouse will wake the machine... the only resolution is to hold the power button.
Is there anywhere I can check to see what's causing this or a quick resolution \ additional troubleshooting I can perform?

    Oh yes, trouble.
I too have an iMac 24", and the problem I've seen is that it doesn't even get to sleep fully. It will shut down the screen, but I still hear a faint fan noise from inside. That's when I know it wont wake again and will need a press-and-hold power down.
But it's not always broken. I'm on the track to find a cause, and *every time it fails it's if I've previously run VLC.*
I'm inclined to think VLC is not the problem, just the catalyst for the bug in 10.5.6.
Can any one corroborate this pattern?
(ps I've not tried Caroline's suggestions)
