IMac intel 10.6.8 will not shut down. Blue screen comes on and spinning wheel goes round.

My iMac intel will not shut down. The version is 10.6.8. To turn it off I have to use the the power off button. Is there any one who can help me to solve the problem.
The blue screen comes on and the spinning wheel goes round and round until I have to turn it off by the power button.

I am having the same problem on my Mini.  I found an earlier thread (now archived) that suggested that this spinning wheel on shutdown of SL has something to do with power management settings.  Another idea was that it is related to EyeTV (which I do have running on this Mac).
Any ideas from the community on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!  (I have done the typical steps of repairing permissions and (from the Install CD) running Disk Utility, which reported no problems.)

Please help, my iMac will not start up, the apple comes up and the wheel goes round but then I am left with a blank white screen. Has anyone any ideas.

Locate your original install disk (it's grey) and use it to restart your iMac by holding the "C" key during startup. Use the disk utility to repair your harddrive.

  • Final cut will not shut down stays in the dock and I have to reboot

Final Cut will not shut down ..... stays in the dock and I have to physically reboot

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by stuck in Dock.
You reboot your Mac. Is FCP trying to open automatically (the icon bouncing)? Or is it just visible in the Dock?

  • My iMac (intel based early 2008) turns itself off after the gray apple logo and spinning wheel

The other day was using my mac normally. Later on I noticed a pixilated horizontal black stripe on the desktop screen so I restarted. The screen ended up stalling at the gray apple logo with the spinning gray wheel. After a minute or two the Mac just turned off and I can never get beyong this point after restarting a bunch of times. I tried plugging in the power cord at another outlet with same result. Boot up disc did give me option to reinstall Mac OS X but then I'd lose my data (which is stupidly not backed up). Is this a power issue, or something else?

  • IMac G5 Intel Early model 10.4.4 will not shut down

I have just replaced the internal HDD due to hardware failure in my iMac g5 (Intel early model) reinstalled the OS, applied all updates successfully. Problem is the machine WILL NOT SHUT DOWN. If I chose shut down, it will only restart! (As it does if I choose restart) Only way I can power it down, is to pull the plug or hold the power button in. It will go to sleep, after preset time on sys prefs. but will not shut down. HELP!!!!!!!!

    iMac g5 (Intel early model)
    There is no such Mac.
It is either an Intel Mac or a PPC Mac.

  • IMac will not shut down or restart using the apple menu

I have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu.  The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer.  This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi...
Before you shut down, make sure you "quit" all open applications. Applications are running if you see the small blue reflection under the app's name in your Dock.
If necessary, you can force quit apps... several ways to do this.  One, from your Apple menu > Force Quit or using the Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities.
If it's not a question of open applications, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • IMac will not shut down or restart

Only a "hard" shut down works (holding the main power button for 5 seconds). I don't think that action does my directory any good! This started when my automatic software update launched and had an unsuccessful installation of QuickTime 7.6.2, and Safari 4 public Beta. I removed Safari and used Firefox to get Safari 3.2.x. I was then able to install QT 7.6.2 after several attempts.
But, my machine will not shut down! Any suggestions? Thank you.

    HI Kenny,
    Try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
If that doesn't help, try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Your computer’s PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values.
Make sure your important data is backed up just in case.

  • Leopard will not shut down?

    Hi,
On installing Leopard I had loads of issues so decided to do a clean install which did resolve all my issues. However, this latterly I noticed Leopard will not shut down, it runs through the process, as in the finder and any open applications disappear, then I just get winding down icon and it never turns off.
    Any suggestions?

It is unlikely any next update will fix this issue, because it is not an update related issue. If it were, no one here would be able to shutdown their machine.
Is this necessarily true? If Leopard shut down is hanging fora several people when Tiger did not then this strikes me as a software problem that will (hopefully) be identified, fixed, and rolled up in a future update.
I will caveat this comment though with the fact I'm new to the world of macs and very new to these forums so I don't necesarily know what I'm talking about(!) so please correct me if I'm wrong to believe this.
Let me throw my experience into the mix :
Having never had any software issues with my Mac's I upgraded to Leopard a few days ago and noticed two things:
    1) When booting up it gets to the desktop and displays Macintosh HD quickly but then spins the coloured wheel (what's this called by the way?) for about 15 seconds before displaying the dock and the rest of the desktop. I have a 2.8ghz extreme iMac intel so surely should be much faster.
    2) Shut down does not finish. The files/dock and everything go, but the backdrop screen remains with the egg-timer (again what is this called now it's not an egg timer)
    Thanks for any tips.

  • Mac Book Pro (OS 10.4.11) WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! HELP!!!

My Mac Book Pro 15", 2.33 GHz, 3 GB memory - runninfg Mac OS X 10.4.11 WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! HELP!!!
When I use the SHUT DOWN command in the Apple Menu - programs close, the screen goes to a blue screen with a revolving time indicator and then remains that way until I FORCE SHUT DOWN by pressing the power button - then after a it makes the sound the screen goes black. I have restarted the machine several times and run disk doctor from the start up disk - no problems are recognized. The problem started last night. I upgraded to Mac OS 10.4.11 today - hoping that the update would resolve the issue - NO LUCK! I keep trying to get a successful SHUT DOWN from the apple command - However I have not been able to get it to SHUT DOWN without forcing the power button. HELP!

"... and run disk doctor from the start up disk"
Please explain that one. Disk Doctor was part of Norton Utilities. NU is not supported by OSX and the faster you get rid of it the better. Boot from your Installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utilities. An optional way of shutting down is holding down control-option-command keys and pressing the eject button. When you are having problems address the problem. Upgrading to a new OS version will not solve the problem.
Wht you should try is running the 10.4.11 intel combo updater here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
    Repair Permissions before and after.

  • Computer can restart but will not shut down

    Hello All,
I have an iMac 17-inch Late 2006 model which is part of a computer lab which will not shut down completely. When I select shut down from the menu the computer will get to the blue screen and a spinning gear icon will appear. After a little while it will stop moving and just sits there. I have left the computer in this state over night and it does not finish shutting off. Only by holding the power button does it ever finish shutting down. It will however sleep and restart without any problems. The restart takes a little while but it does work. All of the other computers in the lab do not demonstrate this issue.
Things I have done in an attempt to fix this problem:
    1. Reimaged computer from known good computer after zeroing the disk
    2. Repaired disk
    3. Repaired Permissions
    4. Deleted login preferences from all user folders as well as library folder
    5. Reset SMC and PRAM
As I had noted earlier this machine is part of a lab in which none of the other computers which were imaged from the same base image are showing this issue. If you have any ideas at all I would love to hear them.
Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions that you may have.

I was looking in the console logs earlier and they are a real pain to parse but here is a section. I told the computer to shutdown at 13:13 for sake of convenience with locating the associated entries. Sadly comparing the notes in its log against a computer sitting besides it has yielded basically identical notation. I posted what I believe to be the shutdown sequence.
