IMac Intel 17" 1.83Ghz *BUYING ADVICE*

Mac users,
I'm about to purchase an Intel iMac 17" 1.83Ghz with 1MB of RAM (DVD-R, X1600) - primarily for the iLife suite, especially Garageband and iMovie / iDVD. But BEFORE I purchase, I wondered if anyone might have any kindly advice, such as:
iDVD crashes ... audio in and out is fuzzy ... fan noise is too loud etc. etc.
I'm more than happy if it runs as smooth as butter, but given my knowledge of computers, I'm more wary than ever before. For example, I purchased a single processor G5 iMac a couple of years ago and the fans can be heard almost 300 miles away.
Cheers!

I bought the Core Duo version a year ago this month. It is the best Mac I have ever had! No issues. Quiet as a mouse.
But, I think you are describing the 2.0 GHz model. The 1.83 GHz is the stripped down basic.

You will need to ask the authorities in India and Canada, this is a technical help forum. I suspect you are simply trying to save your brother money however I suspect it would be easier and less expensive in the long term if he buys the system he wants in India.

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

  • 24" iMac Intel-Memory?

I’m going to order a 24” iMac Intel
How hard is it to put in your own memory?
I will buy from non-Apple source.
Second - should I get a 1 or a 2 GB for the extra slot?
I do know I will be getting a 1GB with the iMac 24”.
    - I use iM about 4 times a year
    - I use iDVD 1 or 2x’s a month (120 min long movie)
I use PHS CS twice a month.
I am getting the Video 7600/256m module.
    thanks-

Your comments made go to the memory’s Co. web page-
    This is what I found.
NOTE: The Intel iMac is built with the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and has two memory sockets which can be upgraded to a maximum of 3GBs using DDR2-667 DIMMs. If both sockets are loaded with an equal amount of RAM, you can take advantage of the dual-channel memory interface for an additional performance boost
I sounds like they are saying-put the same RAM in each slot.
I will also ask the Apple rep. if I'm going to get 2-512 or one 1-GB ram module.

  • Imac Intel will not boot up - 3 days old, light on, starts to spin...

I got an Imac Intel 20" from my husband on mother's day and it now will not turn on!! White light comes on, sounds like it is trying to boot and then nothing... blank screen, no beeps - have unplugged and restarted, tried a million key combination from the forums and still nothing... locked up once on "Garage?" software (according to son)... worked for 2 days...
Very dissapointed and sad... husband looking like the PC is still a better box even after breaking down and getting the Imac - can't help much because this is all new to him...
    Help!

If you bought your imac with a credit card anywhere in your home state(or within 100 miles of your home in another state), then you can return it within 30 days if you are unsatisfied. That is federal law, and a store cannot do anything to deprive you of those rights--no matter what they say (or what they print on the receipt under your signature). My Apple store tried to tell me they only allow returns for 2 weeks. I told them the were violating federal law and they were required to issue a credit for the amount of the return, and they reluctantly complied.
I believe credit card companies are now required to print those rules on your bill (mine does and I don't think it would do so voluntarily), so you can check the fine print on your last bill and read them.
So, if you meet the above requirements, take your imac back . Insist on a refund. Be firm. If the retail person won't do it, tell them you want to speak to a manager. Once they credit your account, walk up to another retail person and tell them you want to buy a 20" imac.
If the retailer won't credit your account, then call your credit card company, and tell them you tried to return a defective product within the 30 day limit that you bought in your home state, and you would like them to reverse the charges.

  • IMac Intel partition login problem

Since yesterday our iMac runs very slowly and refuses to log in to the primary identity, although it will very slowly load two minor user identities. When one tries to log in on the main original user one, the screen goes blue without wavy lines and after 2 minutes or so goes back to the user identity login screen without comment. The only comment from the console was as follows:
Jan 3 16:02:18 a-hs-computer/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Mac0S/loginw indow: Login Window Application Started
Jan 3 16:02:19 a-hs-computer(243): Login Window Started Security Agent
Mac OSX Version 10.4.1 (Build 8S2167)
    2010-01-03 +0100
    That is all!
At 15:38 there is a crash report mdimport server crashed: 'SystemUIServer not responding', 'crashdump crashed' which repeats for 4-5 minutes incl. an 'Isregister crashed' in the middle somewhere, but is too long to repeat verbatim here.
Checking with disk utility, the report goes as follows:
    "Checking HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking catalog file
    Invalid node structure (in red)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
(The program now demands I put in an administrative password but when I DO SO it stops the checking and just adds:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (in bigger red letters)
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair.
(But the repair button is greyed out.)
Macs used to have a disk repair utility SOSDisk (with ambulance graphic) that one could use from the OS System disk, when starting with this. Can one repair with the iMac Intel OS CD?
I saw our old AppleCare CD has TechTool on it. So installed it and tested the machine. The 2006 version reported that the Directory Scan had failed but the Drive Hardware had passed (so perhaps it is reparable). The Surface Scan was so slow that I skipped it once it had reported 4 errors. The final item, Volume Structure failed.
Techtool then says TechTool Deluxe can attempt to "repair the damage" or "reduce the chance of future problems" but I find no trace of a repair tool on it. It takes one back to Apple Support to download the latest version of TechTool Deluxe (2009) but I find no trace of a useable repair tool on that one either, merely a checking system. This time the test passed the Directory scan which had failed with the earlier version, and I let the Surface Scan run slowly to its end over 2 hours, when it reported Failed with 72 errors. Volume Structure failed too.
The newer Techtool is v. 3.1.3. As I did not put in the Apple Care identity when downloading (ours has expired) so is it possible I have a short version without the repair kit? Does anyone know Apple's policy on that? It seemed to download fine without the ApCare identity.
Techtool instructions say one should burn the disk image of TechTool Deluxe DVD on a DVD using Disk Utility but when I get the disk image up and click on the burn button on DU, the DVD starts burning but spits the DVD back out after 30 seconds of burning. I am doing it wrong or is the DVD burn device broke. The machine will still burn CDs as I made some last night. But I have never ever burned a DVD using Disk Utility (1st tries today).
Also, is it possible to start the machine using the Apple Care CD as system and repair with that? It seemed unlikely and this machine now takes so long to restart and really start working (2-3 hours) that I do not dare risk it yet. I use the damaged iMac still to contact you here.
    Thanks for any advice..!

Unfortunately we are probably the only Mac in this desolate corner of North Germany where the inhabitants have always massively opted for Windows as they always go for the cheapest option. As far as I know we are the only Mac owners in a school of over 1500 people with 150 teachers. Had I been able to borrow a Mac, I would have linked it to ours long ago, got our data out and run DiskWarrior from the healthy Mac. The Hamburg techies are extremely expensive as they wrongly assume that anyone with a Mac must be eating off gold plate.
I wd grab the opportunity to use a normal keyboard, if available. I see u are from California; that's a paradise for available Macs.
Don't forget that we can't use the normal means of getting a disk to eject as there is no hard drive left worth the name and therefore no system operating, except whatever the system might be (unclear) on the DiskWarrior application,
    but that is totally frozen.
Your feeling is that I want everything! Yes, another Mac, that would solve the problem. But if you mean that I need help for trifles you are quite wrong. I went through the lists of methods of ejecting disks listed on the web and by Apple before posting the request you have just replied to. And they look OS dependent to me, except perhaps the mouse button technique.
In any case my first concern is to close that DiskWarrior application to avoid it being damaged before closing the disk, but that looks increasingly impossible.
So far by my own efforts in this crisis I have largely solved a lot of problems worth at least 3500 dollars in techie bills had they done it. When we started by ringing the firm we bought the iMac from new, they said they could not help us over the jammed user partition problem, and merely provided the address of a data recovery service that would charge "between 2000 and 3000 Euros (3-4000 dollars)for saving the data on the HD". I refused and myself worked out how to hack into the user partition and was able to put most of the work and business data in the Documents folder onto sticks before the HD finally folded. Essentially the holiday pics in iPhoto remain still to do.
I don't like the idea of having to sacrifice a brandnew DiskWarrior program for 108 Euros but if no one has any suggestions... Pity all this happened one month after our Apple Care 3 yr warranty ended.

  • Iam trying to buy OS Lion to my Imac but i can not buy  because its saying Mac OSX 10.7 requires at least 2 GB of memomie and mine has 1 GB what can i do?

iam trying to buy OS Lion to my Imac but i can not buy  because its saying Mac OSX 10.7 requires at least 2 GB of memomie and mine has 1 GB what can i do?

If it's just a question of memory, you can buy and install more. It could also be that your iMac is just not compatile with Lion.
    Minimum requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Connecting non-powered speakers to iMac Intel

Is there a product that will connect non-powered speakers (that normally connect to a receiver), directly to the iMac Intel (mid 2006)? Either by a cable connector to the headphone port or USB?
I bought 2 Harman Kardon speakers super cheap last year, but have no receiver to power them. I guess I could buy a receiver but I don't really have the space for it. Today, I just bought the Griffin ProSpeaker Cable which connects non-power speakers to the iMac but found out it's for the older iMacs with 2.5mm port. The iMac Intels have a 3.5mm port.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi L.
Tried looking at the page your link directed me to but it was introducing a USB speaker. I know about the multimedia speakers for Apple computers but I'm looking at a way to use the speakers I already have.
I guess if there isn't a cable out there to help hook them up, I will have to purchase either a receiver and go through Airport Xpress or buy the multimedia speakers. (A bit more money than I was hoping to spend.)
    Thanks anyways.

  • Fastest CD & DVD external burner with both an iMac Intel & G3?

I have an iMac intel based computer with 10.5.7 and an iMac G3 computer with 10.4.11/9.2.2. What is the fastest burning drive I can get that will work with both computers? I'd love to buy 2 separate burners but that's too much money. I would prefer one with FireWire connectivity. What is the best available and where can I look for ones that are Mac compatible?

    Hi IcyCool7227
For Mac compatible Desktop DVD Drives look at OWC and LaCie:

  • Imac (intel) 2008 24" screen.

Hi there, I bought my imac (intel) in 2008 along with an Applecare plan which I forgot to register (a complete waste! silly me). Can I register it now? The box is still un-opened? Any suggestions?thanks!

In addition to Paul's comments the AppleCare for a MacBook and an iMac are two seperate products. You cannot use an iMac AppleCare coverage on a MacBook or MacBook Pro.
When you get AppleCare the correct product must be purchased and it is wise to register the same day you purchase it.
Sorry you're having troubles, however I'm sure the same thing won't happen again.
Regarding your BF as I mentioned your BF cannot use the iMac AppleCare on his Macbook however you could try to take the iMac AppleCare back to an Apple Store and request a credit if you buy AppleCare for his MacBook Pro. Bring the MBP with you when you do it and they will help you register it in the store. It's really up to the store management if they will allow the exchange but it's worth a try.

  • All New iMac Intel ?

Heyy Everyone. I am planning to buy a new iMac Intel 17inch. I really like its new hardware/software specs but i have a couple of questions first before purchasing. I have previously used G4 and G5 iMacs now that they are intel is everything still compatible with it. In other words if a software requires a "G5 - 10.4 or more " would that work with the new iMac Intel for example? Second question, if you have one of the new intel iMacs, are you satisfied by it? Any goods and bads? Anything i need to know before purchasing? Thank you sooo much guys!

MS Office is none the wiser that it is running in emulation with Rosetta. PPC programs usually either run in Rosetta, or they don't. Plus, a trial version of MS Office for the Mac is included on your Install disks, so you can try it without buying it!
If you get a PPC program that won't open at all, which will be the rare exception, it is just one of the ones that won't! (You can even make Universal programs run in Rosetta in case you wish to use a PPC plugin with it, but that's another story.)
Bootcamp will be integrated in the next OS X upgrade 10.5, so for now it is an add-on for 10.4.6, and they are still ironing out any of the bugs, hence Beta. It works fine. I had no problems installing it. Win XP Pro SP2 runs fine. I only did it for curiosity and to see if I could do it. I succeeded! I hate Windows, really have no use for it. I have been drinking the Apple Kool-Aid since 1984. Only used Windows at work, when I was forced to. There are those here in the Discussions who would know, who say it runs on the Intel Macs faster than it ever did on another manufacturers PC. Kind of adds new meaning to the Apple advertisement, "What's an Intel chip doing in a Mac? A whole lot more than it's ever done in a PC."
    jajajaja

  • Is there a virtual pc or Windows emulator for iMac intel duo?

    Hi there,
I just got a new iMac intel duo last week and its fantastic. Unfornatuly I need to run a stock market program that only runs on windows...
This is the only program that i need to run on the windows platform.
I was told to get the intel duo as it was the way things were going and that I may have to wait for the software side of things to catch up.
I currently have a workaround that is painfull, but I would like to have it all on the one machine...
Is there a virtual pc version for the iMac intel duo or are there other emulators I could use??
