IMac Intel 17" Slow when installing software

Hi.
I've an iMac Intel dualcore 17" 1,5GB RAM and 160GB.
I've searched the internet for over 2weeks now and i haven't find the solution for my problem. I called Apple and they didn't know what the problem was.
My problem:
My OS-X Tiger started to lag and hang so i decided to format the disk and reinstall everything. The OS intallation took over 24Hours... then when the installation finally was over, the problem wasn't solved. OS-X still hangs and is very very slow.
I have repaired my disk, defragmented it, formated to MAC OS Extended(journaled) i have made almost everything.
I'm trying to install the software update now and at first it said "about 5 minutes left" after 5minutes "44minutes left" after 10minutes "1hour and 5minutes left".
It is the same problem in every installation that I try to make. Even when I formatted the drive and reinstalled the OS.. it took over 24 Hours!! I'm going crazy over here...
I hope someone will provide me with a solution for my problem.
Thanks in advance!

Hello IOO and Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I can't say for sure what the problem is, but reinstalling Tiger (both disk) should take under an hour!
I can only suspect that there might problem with your HD, run the "Apple Hardware Test" as out lined in the following article:

  • Incredibly poor performance when installing software (HDD problem?)

The computer was super slow (slower than any Mac I've ever owned) when installing software. The hard drive seemed to just space out (time out). Activity Monitor showed zero or little activity while installing apps from a DVD.
So I decided to format the HDD and reinstall everything.
I finished reinstallign the OS, and now I am using the DVD labeled "Bundled Applications" to install iLife and it's been over one hour and it has only progressed about 25%. The setup assistant says that the estimated time will be one hour and 44 minutes!!!
I changed the Power Options to not turn off the hard drive whenever possible, just in case, but it just doesn't seem to be doing anything at all (same problem that made me want to format and reinstall from scratch).
Why is this so slow? Anybody?
    Thanks in advance.

Here's some more useful information that I should have mentioned: I have 2 external hard drives attached to the computer via USB and FireWire 800.
Before installing I ejected the hard drives but did NOT unplug them.
I noticed that while installing some other software the Apple Installer which is used by all installations (aka Setup Assistant) automatically re-mounted the hard drives I ejected, so I unplugged them and the installation process sped up to normal.
So I think this is an issue with the Apple Installer searching for information in all drives connected to the machine.
I will try again tonight with the Bundled Software and see.

  • Imac intel only beeps when I turn on

iMac (Intel) only beeps when I power on as the monitor screen remain blanks.. Did my drive just crash and burn??

Please look over Start up tones iMac Mid 2007 and later and see if the tones match what Apple states in the advice letter. If not then I'd say your next stop is an AASP or Apple Store to be professionaly diagnosed.

  • IMac Intel Core Duo: Which Install DVD disks should I be looking for?

I have an iMac Intel Core Duo (2 Ghz, 20") model. This was sent to me from Apple as a replacement for my iMac G5 when it had problems a couple years ago. I just realized today that they did not send me OS install disks for it; I still have the iMac G5 install disks though.
What iMac install disks should be looking for to purchase? Are they specific to an Intel Core Duo? Would any iMac Intel installation disk work?
    Thanks in advance.

You may be able to contact Apple and have them provide a replacement set for a nominal fee.
If it's the Core Duo white iMac from +early 2006+, it came with Tiger (10.4). Therefore, you can get install Leopard or the current Snow Leopard on it. You just need the standard retail disc.
Would any iMac Intel installation disk work?
Usually, installation discs that come with Macs (the grey ones) only work with that specific Mac model. A retail disc (the ones that are sold separately) will work with any supported Mac model.
There is another difference. The disc that is included with Macs also have additional bundled apps, such as the iLife suite. The original included disc for your iMac would have iLife '06, which is two versions old, so it may not be that much of a benefit today (iLife '09 is the current version).

First, ignore the meaningless output of that program.
Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Hi jimp76, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!
Give the community a bit more to work on: Exactly what software are you installing? On what OS? Which machine type?
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • Pass word not working when installing software

My password works correctly all over the computer and at the Apple account, I can change details and so on. But, when I attempt to install software, in this case supplied with a camera, the username/password box appears, and my password is now wrong.
I suspect a mismatch between keychain and the apple password. No remebered previous passwords work, either.
    Help???

You might like to read this. Just for future reference. AFAIK, there's no way to set up an Administrator account without using a password. If you want just one password for both you user (Administrator) account and your Apple ID (which you used to log into this forum) then, I suppose, you could have the same password (although Apple ID's require, I think, at least one upper-case letter and (I really don't recall) one number? You could use the same password, but you can't just ignore the passwords.
You can, however bypass having to use your password on start-up by selecting your user account, unlocking the options, and set log-in options to "Automatically log in user clinton," for example. And things are just going to get worse in Mountain Lion! There, security is set-up, out-of-the-box" to not allow you to open any application downloaded from the Internet unless it's from the App Store or a 'trusted developer'. It's an option that you can turn off, but it's just another safety feature - as are Administrator account passwords.
I don't know of any tech note that deals with passwords - let me look around... they're just a necessary evil. I do find that I have to 'clean out' my Keychain every six months or so... always an expired certificate lying around. Don't mean to complicate matters more, but I like to keep a 'clean' Keychain.
Google "apple user password" and you'll come up with some articles. Do not ever set a firmware password - you can get really hosed doing that.
I don't think I really answered your questions too well - passwords are just a necessary evil in dealing with computers these days and OSX is amongst the securest OS around.
Sorry I couldn't have been of more help...
    Clinton

  • Panther.kext error when installing software

I installed software for my Cricket mobile usb modem a few months back and it turned out they had sent me the wrong link. I believe this to be the culprit but now when I install software I will many times get a message that says something like:

The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/DevGuruVsp_panther.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the vendor for an update.

  • User account/access rights/priveliges when installing software

I'm new to Macs and have read the odd post about disabling certain options/priveliges within accounts, with regards to installing software so as to limit virus damage and so on. Can anyone please advise me what I should or should not enable and so on?
    Thanks in advance.

so don't worry about viruses and the such.
While OS X virus's/trojans can be counted on one hand, I wouldn't go so far as to say not to worry about them. While there are several vendors that make antivirus software for OS X, a popular one is ClamXav, which is available from http://www.clamxav.com. You can set it up to do a daily or weekly (what I do) antivirus scan of your hard drive, as well as scanning any folder(s) where you download files too (I download files to my desktop, where they are scanned).
So far, ClamXav has picked up a phishing email and two emails that had windows virus (the windows virus can't harm a mac, however identifying them for action prevents sending them to others). Last year, MacWorld did several reviews of the various antivirus packages, if you want to see some comparisons. ClamXav is free, however if you use it, send a donation to the author (who is currently working on an Intel mini version, which looks like it's very close to being released).

  • Getting "try again" when installing software

I'm suspecting problem originated when installing (unsuccessfully) update MS Office; all was good before that. When reinstalling, gets to "installing files" then stalls, saying 'try again'. Also tried new installation of iWork, not previously installed. Same thing.
Tried Safe Boot and computer "went dark" and crashed. +Disk Utility+ confirms problems (e.g., "incorrect number of thread records") but cannot complete either permissions evaluation/repair or disk evaluation/repair.
Computer's "working" but I need to restore my copy of Office and other software as well. Help!

Boot from your install disk by holding down the c key. Get past the language screen and choose Disk Utility from the menu bar and hit the First Aid button. Highlight your volume in the left panel and then hit Repair Disk. If their are unrepaired errors then run again. If DU can't repair your disk then you will need a repair utility such as DiskWarrior.

There is no rollback feature on the OSX disc (which version of OSX is this, Leopard, Snow Leopard?) so I am unable to understand this unless you are referring to a restore from Time Machine, is this what you did?

    isis24680,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions? Do you have your eMac in display-only sleep overnight, or use a utility such as OnyX, or otherwise ensure the Unix crom maintenenace scripts run? OS X 10.4.2 (in 7/05) included provision to force the maintenance scripts when sufficiently oberdue; it's possible you're seeing the Mac trying to catch up on a year-plus worth of maintenance.
Do you have anything showing in System Preferences> Others, especially anything that adds to the menu bar? You'll need to check that any add-on system utilities or background programs are updated to run properly under 10.4.6; a quick way to check is to Start Up in Safe Mode and see if performance returns to normal.
Open Applications> Utilities> Activity Monitor, show all tasks, and sort the list by CPU. Is their anything regularly showing up at more than say 15% of the CPU usage?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

  • IMac Intel i5 slow

I Have a mid 2010 iMac running OS 10.7 which is running extremely slow. Every click gets the spinning wheel. I have done disk repair, verification, permissions, cleared Safari cache and cookies. Internet connection seems ok as I can use my iPad or iPhone ok. Any ideas what could be causing the slowness?

    Problem description:
My iMac has almost ground to a halt. I’m on an Intel i5 mid 2010 running OSX 10.7.5.
