IMac Intel 20" with ATI X1600 256MB VRAM

I ordered my iMac Intel 20" with 256MB VRAM Video card. when I go to 'About this Mac', it does show that there is 256MB VRAM but when I ran the Hardware Diagnostics DVD, it only shows 128MB VRAM.
I was wondering if anybody else has this "problem".

yep... there have been some posts about this...most likely it is a bug in the hardware test.
No worries, mate.

  • How different is Windows Vista run on Macbook Pro with 128MB and 256MB VRAM

    Hi guys,
I am going to buy a MacBook Pro soon. But I am struggling picking the right model for me due to that I am not sure how differently Windows Vista is run on them.
I don't use much CPU intensive programs. CPU power is not an issue to me. RAM? I will install 2GHz of it regardless which model I will buy. The only thing worries me is the VRAM.
I would love to have smooth experience with the Aero effects. So how much will the difference in VRAM really make?

At this time Windows Vista is not fully supported by using Apples Boot Camp program. It has been done but people that I personally know that have done it have not much success. I currently am running Windows Vista (non beta) in a parallels session and it runs quite nicely. But I don't get the Aero effects. I would certainly suggest 256MB VRAM Microsoft suggests 128 and their suggestions are for minimal performance. 256 will give you the best performance. Hope this helps.

  • Leopard and Second life on MacBook Pro 2.0 with ATI X1600 card

    Hi,
I really want to get Leopard but am very hesitant given some of the reports and forums I have read about people having with SL in Leopard.
I have a 2.0 Macbook Pro with the X1600 Ati Radeon card and 1.5 Gig RAM.
Right now, SL runs perfectly in Tiger. I love it. Very smooth and fast.
However, I would like to upgrade to Leopard for some of the new features.
Has anybody had trouble running Second Life on a MacBook pro with the above specifications, with Leopard installed ? I am also concerned about Photoshop CS continuing to work but will make that another topic.
Please let know. I really don't want to get all the crashes and freezes some people have been talking about in Leopard with SL and don't want to have to run the different viewers to make it work.
    Thank you !

Since you use Aperture you must do a lot of photo work. Aperture really makes a lot of system demands so I suspect that you are spending a decent amount of time waiting. Aperture also likes a big screen and lots of RAM.
Hard drive size should not be that much of an issue. First, you should be moving those photos over to storage media for safe backup. (A smaller drive should make you more religious about doing this, right? LOL) Second, hard drives can be replaced with bigger and better models.
So, could you use an upgrade? Probably. But, the price seems a bit high at 1700. When buying used, the software included with the system means very little. Don't allow the price to rise because of it. Get some comps off of ebay for similar systems that have sold recently and negotiate. Don't be afraid to make a lower offer and walk away if the seller says no. You have a decent chance that you'll get a call a few days later agreeing to your reasonable offer.
PS: make sure that ATI Radeon card is a 256 and not a 128.

  • Slow wireless speed with new iMac Intel- problem with 802.11g?

There IS a problem with the new Intel Mac, I have tried both the Intel iMac and the new Intel Mac mini and they both have the same problem with slow wireless speed (or rather it variates, if I do a ping to another computer on the network the speed goes from < 1 ms up to 1000 ms and then down to < 1 ms and so on). The older mac minis, my Linux boxes and my Windows PCs don´t have that problem. I have also read reports on the net and it appears that most users experiencing this problem have wireless card firmware version 101.3 (3.120.28.3) . A possible "fix" is to change to 802.11b on the router and then it works. No speed fluctuations and a stabile network! I know it is a bad solution, I would prefer to use 802.11g and get the speed. However I think this points to a problem with the drivers regarding 802.11g. I am starting up a new thread on this and those of you with problems, please try to switch to 802.11b and if it works let us make Apple aware of this.

  • IMac Intel based with Snow Leopard

I believe that when I bought my new iMac, and transferred over files from my old iMac. Norton Security came with it, which I did not want. Everytime I boot my iMac, I literally get 12 different pop up windows saying the Norton Security won't run. There are 3 different icons in the System Preference window. I removed the program from my application folder, but these icons still are in system preferences. How do I remove them from system preferences??
    Thanks. Pamela

It tells all about the disc, and the disc isn't mounted on my desktop though ?
I've read where this is a major issue and some said to go out and buy a
external DVD Burner/Drive I don't think so I paid Apple for this one
And I expect it to work. I have the Apple Care Plan, but I'm disabled and at this

I just took possesion of an IMAC intel-based with 10.8 os. It is good so far but I'm not sure if alot of on/off power button usage is recommended. Is it better to put it to sleep for 1 hourish, or keep popping the power button. Thanks for reading. Double Thanks for an answer.

  • IMac which one with FCP 5.1.4 ?

Hello, I have been using a Powerboog G4 with my FCP no problem so anything would be better!!
Now that I have FCP Studio with Motion and would like to to upgrade. Can't afford a tower... So I'm getting an iMac but I'm stock with which modeel and graphics card is best.
The 20" it comes with 2 400firewires, the 24" with one 400 and one 800 firewire. Save the money or spent an extra $500??
I edit DV from a Panasonic DVX100. Except for Motion I have no other need for a super duper video.
    Three options ( withstudent discount)
    $1,900:
    iMac-20", 2.33GHz, 2GB SDRAM, ATI Radeom x1600/256MB-VRAM
    $2,336:
    iMac-24", 2.33GHz, 2GB SDRAM, NAVIDIA GeForce7300 GTO/128MB-SDRAM
    $2,449:
same as aboe 24" but w/NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB SDRAM
To the above I have to add Apple care plan. If I get the more affordable option I can also buy an exteranl drive. with the other option, I'll wait.
Thank you in advance for your feedback.
    iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It's always advisable to get the best that you can afford, but if you're going for the imac, you need an external drive so I'd recommend going for the middle option with a decent external HD.
Have you absolutely checked that you can't source maybe one of the earlier Mac Pro models via an authorized reseller or maybe the apple refurb store (the refurb store currently has one at $2199, I'm sure you could find one cheaper).
The imac is compromised in terms of expandability - do a search on this forum for more details.
Having said that, I coped for a couple of years with FCP 4.5 and a G4 imac and an external HD with no probs, so if you can cope without the expandability and you'll be sticking with SD you'll be OK - don't forget FCP 6 is just around the corner and you'll have to check the system requirements carefully to see if it'll run on an imac should you decide to take this route.

  • My imac intel 20" has died....

    Hello, i wrote from Spain.
I have a imac intel 20" with the next config:
    core duo 2.33 Ghz.
    500 gb hd.
    ATI Graphic Card 256 Mb.
    2 GB Ram.
Today after 4 months of happy use my imac show me a kernal panic....
Restart the machine, and the Kernel Panic was repeat.
I found in the forum, and I reset the SMC, the PRAM, the NVRAM...and the machine not start....
I feel so bad...I love this machine, but never thought that this issue ocurrs in a imac....
Well, in the third o fourth try the machine start, and make a backup and reinstall the OS, all ok, the reinstall, the install of bundle apps....everything shows fine....but...when I start to work with th iDVD app (simple task) the machine show me another kernel panic and not start....
Other thing I do it´s disconnect and connect the RAM that in the Apple Support Pages says...and nothing the machine not start...
    What can I do?
The better solution is call to service and get the machine to the technicians...or I can make anything..???....
    Thanks.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
    maybe this is helpful:
The XLabs have a good FAQ for resolving Kernel Panics.

If that doesn't help, calling Service is what I would propose.

  • New imac intel freezing

new imac intel freezing with filemaker and word. usually when multiple apps. are open. trouble with restart as well.

    Dear All:
After taking in your advise, and after looking at a lot of email threads elsewhere (including Dennis'), I decided that an "erase & install" is the cleanest and best solution. So, after making a back-up, I did exactly that; this whole weekend was gone for that, I am afraid. And, guess what happended: the iMac froze at the following instants:
    * when the screen says "welcome" in several languages;
    * right after it took a picture of mine to establish the Admin a/c.
    * not more than 2 minutes of listening to a radio station in iTunes.
After each inident, I had no choice but to switch off & on the iMac.
Note that, this is a clean install with neither any 3rd party app nor the latest Quicktime update (because this has been mentined as a possible culprit).
So, I have decided to return the machine. I am a college faculty member, and I am assuming Apple may agree to such an arrangement with our Technical Poduct Center team. Well, let's see how good their customer service really is.
So, there you are. A bit disappointed (actually, a lot). I am now working with my PPC laptop (Powerbook G4) until I get another.
Again, thank you very much for all your help.

  • Different between Ati X1600 128Mb and Ati X1600 with 256Mb

Hi!. I'm going to buy a new imac 20", and i would like to know if it is a really speed difference between the graphic card Ati X1600 with 128Mb and the one with 256Mb.
I've heard that the one with 256Mb is slighty faster, but not quite sure about this...
Note: Some 3D games will be played in this new imac too.
    Thanks a lot!

I bought the 20" with the standard 128 x1600 card, I've found it runs civilisation 4 perfectly well (the only game i've tried). Future 3D games will probably need a better card anyway. Look at the system requirements of the games you want to play, if they say minimum 128Mb VRAM then they should run ok. I guess it's not very expensive to upgrade to the 256 though. I just didn't want to wait for a CTO (mine arrived in less than 48 hours after I ordered it!)

  • Can I upgrade the video card in my 2009 iMac with the new ATI 2 GB VRAM card?

I am looking for more video RAM for video, CGI and animation work in Blender.
I may purchase Final Cut Pro X in the near future and I need to make sure there is enough video RAM to be able to work with this version of FInal Cut.
I, currently, use Final Cut 4 Express and though this runs fine, through Rosetta, on my current setup, I fear this much newer version may need more graphics power than I have, now.
I, also noticed some lag when working with Blender.
No where near as much graphics or video/animation lag as when I using Blender on my old G4m but it's still slightly noticeable.
I realize I may have to install this myself.
Can I purchase, somewhere, Apple's 1 or 2 GB ATI card seperately or from a third party vendor and install, myself.
I have seen posts that tell that the 27 inch iMac has a removable video card and is not soldered to the logic board like in the 21 inch models.
If true, is there a complete procedure for the iMac breakdown, installation of the video card and reassembly procedure?
My iMac only has the stock 256 MB VRAM graphics card.
If the take down looks more difficult than I feel I can attempt, I have an Apple authorized reseller, repair facilty here, in my area.
Could I purchase the card and have them install it for a fee?
ThanX for all of the info and advice, in advance
    Michel

You will need to check if your model originally was offered with a custom build option that included a different graphics card. If so, you may be able to have it done; here is a fellow who managed to do it on a 2011 iMac (graphics card not soldered) and the model originally offered a better card option:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18919734#18919734
    Is this yours:
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-3.06-27-inch-alumin um-late-2009-specs.html
In particular, click on the link in this section of the specs:
I'd check either with Apple and/or an AASP to see if it can be done with yours or if yours is one of those where it is part of the Logic Board/soldered to it.

  • IMovie 10 on an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB?

Will iMovie 10 ever be installable on an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB?

They updated iMovie to 10.0.1 so it will work with these Mavericks machines:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6023
"Installing iMovie (2013) previously required a computer with an OpenCL-capable video card. This requirement was removed, and you can install iMovie version 10.0.1 on any Mac with OS X Mavericks."

  • Viewing HD online video at 1080P with graphic card ATI x1600

I seem to notice that when I am viewing videos in HD at 1080 the video tends to get choppy but then it start to work again normally, mean while when I go to my new macbook alum it works perfectly fine there is this because ATI x1600 doesn´t support 1080 HD trailer movies at that res, which it ***** because back then it use to work fine at 1080 is this a leopard driver issues or is it that the card is not powerful enough to handle that res, even though I have 256 of ram just as the same as the nvidia 9400m which has shared 256 of ram.

this is the link where my ATI X1600 graphics card with iMac intel duo core 2.0 gigahertz with 2 gigs of ram and my graphics is 256 of vram
has problem viewing smoothly the HD 1080P trailers, but it doesn´t have any problems viewing with the new macbook with the nvidia 9400m graphic cards is this probably because of an encoding issue or codec issues with these HD trailers.
