IMac (Intel) & Airport Express, AirTunes only required, how do I...

Please help.
I have an iMac(Intel) with built in Airport and an Airport Express. I connect to the internet with an ADSL router connected to my mac by ethernet. I have plugged the AAE into my Hi-Fi and want iTunes to stream AirTunes. However I cant set-up the AAE correctly. If I set up a new network my Mac tries to connect to the internet via Aiport and fails. How do I stop it automatically trying to connect to the net via Airport instead of ethernet.
All I want is my iMac to send music to the AAE, nothing else.

Try not using the wizard, but the manual configuration tool, and try setting itup so that wireless networking is turned off, but AIrTunes is on.

Why should I have to spend money to solve this problem? Many others have the same concern, Airport Utility 6 does not support  older Airport Express units. This is Apple's problem. I've tried many solutions proposed on the net but none worked. I'm still trying for a work around.

  • Regarding a 2nd gen. Apple TV and existing Airport Express/AirTunes setup

alright, i think i'm going to make the jump now for the new Apple TV. but i do have a few questions, particularly re: my existing Airport Express/AirTunes and wiring since i'm really maxed out in terms of open ports that i have left.
—my HDMI will have to go through a new HDMI smart switch hub into my older plasma that has one HDMI input. no problem, i've researched the smart switch, and realize the Apple TV may go in the low priority input since it seems to throw a continous current. if anyone LOVES their smart switch, throw me a bone here.
--however, i will need to go audio optical out into my receiver based on my current setup. and my receiver's optical inputs are all currently used. however, one is in use by a nearby Airport Express. since that AE has been used for AirTunes for years, i assume i can now safely ditch it's optical out since i will now be running my music through the Apple TV instead, correct? and therefore i will have my receiver's optical input now freed up, and there goes my Apple TV wire instead. just looking for verification here.
--since this AE is right there, will I get any speed advantage to the Apple TV by dropping an Ethernet cable from the AE's output into the Apple TV's Ethernet input, rather than relying on a pure wireless signal? my assumption is no, since they are both receiving the signal from my Airport Extreme on the other side of the house, but i thought it was still a worthwhile question.

  • Apple AirPort Express - use only as wireless audio gateway

    Hello!
I use a Samsung Notebook (Q35) and iTunes extensively. My WLAN (801.11 g) connection is already set up with an existing access point and router - but what I really want to do is to make up a wireless audio connection between iTunes and my stereo system. Sounds like the AirPort Express is the right thing to do - but, please, can anybody tell me
    a) if I can use both my existing WLAN network and the AirPort Express as ONLY audio gateway to my stereo TOGETHER at the same time (I do not want to include the AirPort into my WLAN-DSL network - I only want to use it as audio gateway to the stereo),
    b) which performance I can expect in such configuration (does surfing the internet slow down the audio link in such configuration)?
    c) can I use the AirPort Express to take up an extrenal harddrive in such a configuration?
Do You have any suggestions of alternatives for a wireless audio gateway to the stereo? Are there other, generally useable ways?
Thanks very much for Your answer in advance.
    Björn
P.S.: Do You know - can I use the USB connector in the AirPort Express to connect to a USB hub - and use it to connect it to my iPod and synchronize my iPod wireless?

    hi Björn,
    a) if I can use both my existing WLAN network and the AirPort Express as ONLY audio gateway to my stereo TOGETHER at the same time (I do not want to include the AirPort into my WLAN-DSL network - I only want to use it as audio gateway to the stereo),
the Airpor Express can be configure to join your existing WLAN. so as a part of your local network, it will be an accessible device while you can still used your internet.
    b) which performance I can expect in such configuration (does surfing the internet slow down the audio link in such configuration)?
i haven't notice a significant slow down while i'm surfing internet and streaming AirTunes but i'm not able to tell you how much bandwidth AirTunes actually needs.
    c) can I use the AirPort Express to take up an extrenal harddrive in such a configuration?
No, only the new Airport Extreme n base station can support AirDrive but the Airport Extreme base station does not have the AirTunes features.
Do You have any suggestions of alternatives for a wireless audio gateway to the stereo? Are there other, generally useable ways?
personnally, i do beleive that the AirTunes features you will get with the Airport Express is the better alternative since you already use iTunes for your playback.
P.S.: Do You know - can I use the USB connector in the AirPort Express to connect to a USB hub - and use it to connect it to my iPod and synchronize my iPod wireless?
to my knowledge, the usb socket on the Airport Express can only be used by a USB printer or a AirTunes remote control. you will not be able to synchronize your iPod on the Airport Express.

  • When I connect my iphone directly to my receiver then connect to spotify, it plays through both speakers but when I connect wirelessly through airport express it only comes out through one speaker. Any thoughts?

When I connect my iphone directly to the receiver through a cable, it plays Spotify just fine but when I try to play wirelessly through Airport Express, it only plays through one speaker. Any thoughts?

yeah, that's what I figured.. I guess I'll try now to figure out exactly how to do that!

  • In my iPhone  wifi screen the setup airport express is  not visible  how I turn it visible in my wifi page

I'm not see in my iPhone 4s in the wifi the setup airport express the only see the wifi connections and ask to join network  I don't see the setup screen how I charge this in the wifi options

To administer the AirPort Express, you need to install the iOS version of the AirPort Utility. You can get it via the App Store app on your iPhone.

  • Software Download for Airport Express/Airtunes?

Hey all. I decided to hook my Sony speaker system up to my amplifier and hook back up my Airport Express. So I know I need to add the Airtunes software to my Macbook (iTunes) to be able to run it. Unfortunately I no longer can find the CD that Airport Express came with. How am I able to get the software now? I have searched alot of sites online and can't sem to find a download anywhere. Can someone help me out and point me to where I can get it. Thanks so much!!
    Jason

    Hi Duane
I'm still having trouble. I did as you said. I have connected the Airport Express to my Sony amplifier and have plugged it in. Amber flashed for a minute or two and now it is solid green. I went to the Airport Admin Utility as it suggests in the help URL you posted. However no base station appears when it scans. It is not seeing it or some reason. Did I miss something? Is there a setting on my Macbook that needs to be adjusted?I havent used the Airport Express in a couple years. I did reset it with a paper clip as another help area suggested and then trued to rescan it but still doesnt show up as a base station. I am using it in conjunction with the existing wireless network in my house and my Macbook that I purchased the end of last year. I have no prob connecting to internet on my Macbook. Please help!
    Thanks

  • Stream from my iMac via airport express to my Harmann Kardon AVR360

I want to stream music from my iMac via airport express to my Harmann Kardon AVR360, but without success. I'm using a mini jack -> optical adapter. Any recommendations on how to make this work?

The issue may be the adapter or cable that you are using. Since both your AirPort Express and Harman Kardon support digital audio optical connections, the simplest connection between them would be to use a cable with a 3.5 mm minijack to TOSlink optical connector on one side and a TOSlink optical connector on the other side.
I also have had scenarios where I had the right cable/connector but either the cable or connector was faulty.

Older AppleTV did not play well with some switches, so it'd be sensible to get advice about one that definitely works with the new unit. They may have ironed out HDMI glitches but too early to tell.

Yes, the AppleTV will replace the Airport for optical audio duties from your iTunes library. Add an iPhone/iPas Remote app and it should work very nicely as it did with the 1st gen.

I doubt it would be of any benefit as AppleTV has wireless n anyway.

In that case if it's an extender you may need it on for AppleTV to pick up the wireless, though I think I'd try and see if it receives the main signal adequately first.

    I know that feeling.

  • Airport Express/AirTunes Not Working with New Verizon FIOS Connection

I was just set up with the new Verizon FIOS high speed internet, and now my Airport Express/AirTunes will not connect to my remote speakers like it did previously. The option for them is still there on iTunes, however when I select them, I get the horizontal barber pole for a minute, then the speaker selction goes back to computer.
    In more detail:
Previously I had a Comcast internet connection which went through a Linksys wireless router. My Mini picked up the internet with this connection. Then I had an Airport Express hooked up to some remote speakers. They worked fine. Now, I have the Verizon wireless router hooked in directly to my Mini through the ethernet cable. I see the wireless network created by the Verizon router. I still see the wireless network created by the Linksys router. However, my iTunes can not connect to my AE/AirTunes speakers.
Note, I did reset the AE and then using Airport Setup Assistant, tried to locate it again, but it came up with nothing (other than my neighbor's new Verizon router).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Still no luck. The green light is on for the AE.
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Connecting the iPod Hi Fi to Airport Express / AirTunes

i've got everything set up correctly and it used to work before i moved. however, there is a slight difference in the set up now, perhaps this is why it now won't work.
i ONLY have a laptop that is connecting wirelessly to the (wireless) network. there is an airport express hooked up to the router in one room, in another room is a second airport express (the only other one) hooked up to the speaker.
can i not play music through my (wireless) laptop without having a hard-connected computer as part of the network? it doesn't seem to me that this would matter but it's the only thing i can think of...except maybe the wiring from the hi-fi to the AE is bad...
    thanks in advance-

You either need to buy another Toslink adapter online or just buy a normal male/male miniplug cable. What is the bit rate on your music? If it isn't really high then the optical cable is just going to be overkill.
Don't know why you would expect a cable for the AEX, why would someone who doesn't have one want to pay for what would be a superfluous cable?

  • Using Airport Express / Airtunes to play audio from Safari / OSX?

Just bought my first Airport Express. Can I use Airport Express / Airtunes to play out audio from Safari / OSX (or other applications) to my home stereo?

    Hi Fenneberg:
Welcome to Apple Discussions and congrats on your AE purchase!
You'll need a 3rd application to stream music to your AE from other applications like Safari. It's called Airfoil and it can be found at: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/
    I hope this helps!

  • Airport Express can only extend network, not create new one. Why?

I am sharing a flat with some friends. The shared broadband router is placed in the living room. To strengthen the signal and make it easier for me to manage, I bought an Airport Express, connected it to the shared router with an ethernet cable and set up a wireless network of my own in my room. It was working fine, until recently we renewed our broadband contract. The router had been replaced by a new one (I don't know why) and the network configration had been changed. Since then I was not able to use my own network. In the Airport Utility display, the light of Airport Express is green, but the light of Internet is yellow, and the status is disconnected. I tried to change various other configuration on the Airport Express, and all in vain. Until I switched the network mode from 'Create a new wireless network' to 'Extend a wireless network', the Internet connection was finally back online. But this merely extends the existing network and not what I want. Why this happens? Why my Airport Express can only extend a network, not create one?

Here is the situation on my Airport Express.
If I choose to extend the existing wireless network, the Airport Utility shows like this:
If I set up a wireless network of my own, what I get in the Airport Utility is this:
See my problems here? The Airport Express does not show anything in amble, but the Internet complains that there is no connection.
This problem did not occur before the broadband was renewed and the rounter was replaced.

  • How do you setup an Airport Express to only stream music???

+I have a Time Capsule setup as my base for the internet access, followed by an airport express for wireless usb devices and for my stereo. I have a second airport express to which I want to setup for streaming music only. When I leave my home and go to friends etc i which to stream music via this second airport express.+
When I setup this device I get "problem connecting to the internet" I have marked that I do not which to connect to the Internet and the following message comes "make sure your ethernet cable is connected" blah blah blah. All I need is a portable music streaming "Airport Express" device, no connecting to another network, no internet access ect. Please can someone help?????? Am I just chancing my tail???
    Thanks in advance.

So you want to set the AirPort Express (AX) up at a location with no wireless network and no Ethernet network?
Just configure the AX to create a wireless network and ignore the messages about not being connected to the internet... because you aren't. Have your computer join the wireless network created by the AX. Start iTunes and stream music.
