IMac Intel Core2Duo white - Lucent Firewire or not?

I have this iMac:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
Is my Firewire chipset one of the Lucent chipsets some have had trouble hooking up more than two devices to?

Hi AB
I've searched and searched and really can't find any solid answer to your question! I even looked at several take apart articles to see if I couldn't ID the blasted thing on the logic board.
In the [Developer's FireWire Product-Specific Details|http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/HWT echFireWire/Articles/FireW_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003892-SW61200331173], I did find where it say's +"The 17-inch and 20-inch iMacs provide two FireWire 400 ports supported by an _Open HCI FireWire controller with an integrated FireWire 400 PHY (Physical Layer)_"+ if that helps.
I then Googled: [Open HCI FireWire controller with an integrated FireWire 400 PHY (Physical Layer).|http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&client=pub-6263300333013957&cof=FORI D%3A1%3BGL%3A1%3BLBGC%3A336699%3BLC%3A%230000ff%3BVLC%3A%23663399%3BGFNT%3A%2300 00ff%3BGIMP%3A%230000ff%3BDIV%3A%23336699%3B&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&q=OpenHCI+FireWire+controller+with+an+integrated+FireWire+400+PHY+%28PhysicalLayer%29.&btnG=Search], but only found a twisted maze of FireWire controllers and links with no real hard evidence of exactly which controller is used in the Intel iMac?
*Are you having trouble hooking up more than two devices?*

  • Daisy chain Voyager hard drives & iMac Intel Core2Duo (white model)

It would appear that Voyager hard drive enclosures from Newertek won't allow you to daisy chain them via SATA. Yet they conveniently provide you with a SATA cable if you have an eSATA port on your Mac. Is there any sort of KVM switch/ hub that makes the SATA hard drives connect directly to each other via SATA instead of via the iMac's Firewire for data transfer.
I'm finding I large gobs of data to transfer between two hard drives, and a dual drive enclosure never likes to remain mounted on my iMac no matter whom I buy, so I'm dealing with these Newertek Voyagers. The other thing that's messed up about these Newerteks is if both are plugged in to the two Firewire ports of my iMac, when I wake up in the morning, I can't eject either one without a force eject. I'm hoping if I can daisy chain them somehow by SATA I'll get faster data transfers, not have to copy back to my iMac everytime I want to copy to the other drive, and have more reliable connectivity with only one Firewire port of my iMac in use.

You can get them - "firewire to sata bridges" is the term.
I don't think it'll make any practical difference - writes will still have to go from one disk, through SATA to the firewire to the Mac, then back out the firewire to the other SATA. There's no controller to handle the direct connection.

  • XP Service Pack 3 & monitor spanning iMac Intel Core2Duo?

I have a mini-DVI capable iMac Intel Core2Duo (second white Intel model), and want to install Boot Camp, Parallels, or VirtualBox on my Mac with XP Service Pack 3 because that's what my VPN supports. Do all give me the ability to do monitor spanning to a second DVI display on my iMac? I don't wish to have mirror displays.

I just got my VPN key. I was curious if this would work with any of the virtualization solutions:

  • Random error fills screen with colored pixels and then reboots, OSX 10.6.8 2010 iMac intel Core2Duo, help?

    Hi all,
random error I'm guessing something to do with video drivers that replaces the screen with a bunch of colored pixels.
I'm not sure if the computer is still responding and it's just a screen issue, but I do see a little square move when I move the mouse.
I'm uploading a picture of the error.
I've updated everything to the latest version of Leopard.
    2010 intel iMac
    OSX 10.6.7
    Any ideas?

I've updated everything to the latest version of Leopard.
    2010 intel iMac
    OSX 10.6.7
v10.6.7 is Snow Leopard not Leopard and there is a v10.6.8 update available.
Click your Apple menu  /  Software Update
Restart your Mac after the update is installed.
Same problem exists then run the Using Apple Hardware Test
Might be a bad graphics card.

  • I have an iMac(Intel) Desktop computer.  I cannot print anything as it is telling me that it is "offline" How do I start it working again?  My Lexmark Printer is in working order as I have just photocopied a document successfully.

I have an iMac (Intel) Desktop computer.   It will not send a message to my Lexmark printer because it says  "offline".   My Lexmark printer is in working order as I have just successfully photocopied a document on it.

That message means that the computer cannot see the printer on its network.
Is the printer directly connected to the computer with a USB cable, or is it a network printer (either wireless, or wired to the router with an Ethernet cable)?

  • Copying mail Preferences and Library from an eMac to an iMac Intel

I have copied the Preferences and the Mail folder of Library from en eMac to an iMac Intel.
The accounts appears but not the mailboxes I had in the eMac.
    Could anybody help me please?

    guillermo,
You may have to rebuild the Index. Within the folder <home>/Library/Mail there is a file "Envelope Index". Close Mail and then using Finder, move that file to the desktop and then re-open Mail. This will cause Mail to re-create the "Envelope Index" which will hopefully cause your mailboxes to be visible. If that works then you can move the file "Envelope Index" from the Desktop to the Trash.
    Post back with the results.

  • Imac intel start up problems and fan runs constantly on high

I got my Imac 17 Intel Duo Core on March 16th and 10 minutes after I started it the screen went black and a little light started flashing on the lower right. After holding the power button it finally turned off but would not boot up, just that black screen and blinking light. I was told by tech to unplug everything for a few minutes then put the plug in just the Imac, then hold the power button down while plugging it in. Well it started after that but the fan was on high constantly. This was remedied by unplugging everything for a few minutes and then starting back up normally. Now it runs in stealth mode being virtually silent. If your Imac intel is making noise it's not normal. Check out this site for noise problems.

I second Dave it needs to go back to service. What I have heard happens sometime is one of the temperature sensors is either not put back on properly during reassembly or it comes of soon after. With an incorrect temperature reading that particular fan will run at full speed. You can check the fan speeds by installing iStat Pro: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27037

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

  • Imac Intel will not boot up - 3 days old, light on, starts to spin...

I got an Imac Intel 20" from my husband on mother's day and it now will not turn on!! White light comes on, sounds like it is trying to boot and then nothing... blank screen, no beeps - have unplugged and restarted, tried a million key combination from the forums and still nothing... locked up once on "Garage?" software (according to son)... worked for 2 days...
Very dissapointed and sad... husband looking like the PC is still a better box even after breaking down and getting the Imac - can't help much because this is all new to him...
    Help!

If you bought your imac with a credit card anywhere in your home state(or within 100 miles of your home in another state), then you can return it within 30 days if you are unsatisfied. That is federal law, and a store cannot do anything to deprive you of those rights--no matter what they say (or what they print on the receipt under your signature). My Apple store tried to tell me they only allow returns for 2 weeks. I told them the were violating federal law and they were required to issue a credit for the amount of the return, and they reluctantly complied.
I believe credit card companies are now required to print those rules on your bill (mine does and I don't think it would do so voluntarily), so you can check the fine print on your last bill and read them.
So, if you meet the above requirements, take your imac back . Insist on a refund. Be firm. If the retail person won't do it, tell them you want to speak to a manager. Once they credit your account, walk up to another retail person and tell them you want to buy a 20" imac.
If the retailer won't credit your account, then call your credit card company, and tell them you tried to return a defective product within the 30 day limit that you bought in your home state, and you would like them to reverse the charges.
