Imac intel freezes while starting

Hi,
my friend's imac intel duocore freeze in the late stages of the starting process. This appeared after running latest software update package, including iphoto, ipod, itunes, quicktime, keynote ....
Next, I started from install disc, repaired permissions, repaired disc with disc utility, which reported some errors, but told me, it was able to repair.
Unfortunately, this did not change anything!!
What should I do?
- run diskwarrior (3.0.3)?
Or will I have to install a new system?
If yes, is there a way to keep the old data?
The other thing I missed: when booting from cd, I expected to be able to see the harddrives data, but it was not! How can I access it.
If nothing helps, I'll run the imac as a slave disk of my ibook to backup!!
I'll hope there is someone to assist me a little bit!
Thanks in advance!

oh, I'm sorry.
looking into one the lates threads I found a million things to check before asking questions in here - sorry!

It all started today while it was unsually slow. I verified the disk permissions and it took for ever.
I reset it abut it just freezed on the apple logo while loading. Any idea?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • New imac intel freezing

new imac intel freezing with filemaker and word. usually when multiple apps. are open. trouble with restart as well.

    Dear All:
After taking in your advise, and after looking at a lot of email threads elsewhere (including Dennis'), I decided that an "erase & install" is the cleanest and best solution. So, after making a back-up, I did exactly that; this whole weekend was gone for that, I am afraid. And, guess what happended: the iMac froze at the following instants:
    * when the screen says "welcome" in several languages;
    * right after it took a picture of mine to establish the Admin a/c.
    * not more than 2 minutes of listening to a radio station in iTunes.
After each inident, I had no choice but to switch off & on the iMac.
Note that, this is a clean install with neither any 3rd party app nor the latest Quicktime update (because this has been mentined as a possible culprit).
So, I have decided to return the machine. I am a college faculty member, and I am assuming Apple may agree to such an arrangement with our Technical Poduct Center team. Well, let's see how good their customer service really is.
So, there you are. A bit disappointed (actually, a lot). I am now working with my PPC laptop (Powerbook G4) until I get another.
Again, thank you very much for all your help.

  • IMac G5 freezes on start up after ITunes, Quicktime and Security update

On June 2nd, the following event occurred on my IMac G5 (model year 2005) equipped Mac OS 10.4.9
Upon completion of the automatic update for Itunes, Quicktime and a security update, the computer restarted.
However, the start-up sequence freezes on a grey screen with the logo for the power button displayed in the middle and a message inviting to hold down the poer button down for 5 sec to re-start.
the only way to complete the start up sequence is to hold down the apple key while pressing the power button.
Does anyone have any suggestions to regain control of my computer ?thank you in advance.

Welcome to Discussions - Hopefully, you repaired permissions both before and after updating, if not, it might be a good thing to do now. Also, you are not alone in having problems with the update, take a look at this.
Generally, it's better to install updates one by one, so that if you have problems, you know which one caused them.

  • CS5 Freezes While Starting Up. Can anyone help?

So I have had Photoshop CS5 for a few years now and about a week ago the program started to become slow and would sometimes freeze up while using the brush strokes, regardless of which tool and drawing utensil I used (mouse or tablet). So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it but now the program won't even start up! It starts and then gets to the "Initalizing..." part then stops and freezes, forcing me to close the program by force. I have uninstalled and reinstalled over and over again but with hardly any luck. And the one time the program did fully "run" it quickly froze and again, I had to close it by force.
I have installed the latest drivers for my computer, an ASUS G46V
    It has a Intel Core i5-323M CPU @ 2.60GHz
Memory (RAM): 8.00 GB (7.89 GB usable)
64-bit Operating system with a x64 based processor
and is running on Windows 8.1
Any help is appreciated. I have tried running Photoshop with and without the tablet but it always had the same results. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and I have run the program as an administrator.
I also downloaded the free version of CS2 and the same problem seems to be appearing...which makes me think this might be a computer problem, but again, I need help with this. I rely on Photoshop for my art and I have commissions to do and finish. So I would like to get this fixed as soon as possible.

I did get CS2 for free from here https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=cs2_downloads.
So unless I have to pay for this eventually then I guess it is free.
Yes you did were you honest when you agreed with the terms there? CS2 is not Free.
The serial numbers provided as a part of the download may only be used by customers who legitimately purchased CS2 or Acrobat 7 and need to maintain their current use of these products.

I have worked with brush sizes and it slows down for the large brush sizes regardless of the size of the canvas, but unfortunately I have a unfinished commission on a pretty large canvas, and resizing it not only freezes the program but it causes the picture to loose quality in looks. So I have tried all that.  And this is a problem be cause this program literately just randomly stopped functioning properly. For months it worked fine with little to no problems, and then it just suddenly getting issues.
I only see lag with large tipped wet mixer brushes when I paint on image where I viewing actual pixel.  Its a totally different story when you paint view fit on screen when you canvas size is large.  I looks like Photoshop is painting the millions of pixels on the larges canvas tile by tile and scaling the tiles theo the zoomed out scalde dowv image its displaying for you to see. You not seeing the actual image being painted..

  • TC freezes while starting - Network adapter damaged?!

    Hello everyone,
I have a TC 1TB, which worked fine a couple of month. Unfortunately, since yesterday, TC doesn't work at all, as it seems to be unable to start. From one minute to the other TC didn't appear in my Finder, TC showed a yellow light (not flashing). I tried to restart, since then, the following repeats after every restart (including those after resetting):
TC shows a "yellow light" => shut down the TC, disconnected any cables and start again; then, shortly after showing a "green light", the light starts flashing and than continues in yellow. After a few seconds, yellow light starts flashing, TC seems to restart, ten seconds later the green light appears, followed by the same flashing and continuing in yellow.... All along, TC's drive is running.
The Airport software recognizes my TC as soon as the green light appears, but cannot conntect because in the meantime, TC shows up with a yellow light and so on and on....
I tried to restart several times, including different types of resetting the TC (pushing the button while TC is running as well as when connecting to power).
    Can anyone solve this?
I do not think that my TC is dead (unlike many other postings....), because I still can start it. Anyway, I can't connect to it, neither wireless nor directly via ethernet cable....

    Hi!
I already tried this - but it did not help. Right now I am writing this lines while looking a streamed video from my iMac. You may ask, why it works - it's easy: I plugged on my old AVM Fritzbox 3070.
I will try this for another hour, but I guess that one thing is sure right now: the TimeCapsule is the problem, not any of my Macs or programs.
Well - and I decided one more thing: my Fritzbox doesn't work "apple-like" using "Back to my Mac". Sometimes I need this feature. So I decided to order an AirportExtreme today. It will arrive here in the next 3 days, so I can try this next Monday.
The TimeCapsule is very slow doing updates - so I never really liked it. Well - if the Fritzbox and the new Airport does a better job, the switch will be perfect.
Anybody out there interested in a nice TimeCapsule 500 ?
*EDIT - it does NOT work :,-(*
Well - my Fritzbox worked for 15 Minutes and now the Videostreaming freezed. BUT - the network does not freeze like it does using the TimeCapsule. However - I am really interested in the AirPort Extreme and if it will make a better job.
My "last idea": The TimeCapsule and the Fritzbox are both about 2 or 3 years old. Maybe the network-standard isn't fast enough for high quality video and causes a crash after a few minutes.

  • IMac powers down while starting in safe boot mode

My 2014 21" iMac powers itself down after about 10 seconds while trying to startup in safe boot mode. I'm not even sure why it is trying to start in safe boot mode. I shut it down after a power outage while plugged into an APS UPS. I'm guessing that since I interrupted the auto shutdown it is restarting in safe boot mode. Either way, I get a grey screen with a big apple and a progress bar. The progress bar gets to about a tenth full and the power just shuts off.
I've tried starting up while holding the alt key to select the Macintosh HD. The same thing happens.
I'm not particularly tech savvy. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thank you for the clarification and link. I ran the disk utility on Macintosh HD and it said it can't repair the disk, and that I need to reformat and restore. It has an invalid node structure. All of this happened just because I shut it down presumable while it was already trying to shut itself down after talking to the UPS?
At least I use Time Machine.
    Thank you again.

  • IMac is freezing during start-up from OS X installation disk

My iMac 27" is freezing during re-installation of the complete machine from Leopard OS X installation disk. The machine ends up (also in safe mode) with a screen showing something like "horse steps in the snow" as shown in both pictures, which can be seen on:
    http://whbakker.demon.nl/screen and http://whbakker.demon.nl/detail
I cannot find a thread or a good suggestion, what to do to re-initialize the complete machine.
Thank you in advance for your answers!

Can we assume you mean your Snow Leopard installation disc & that it is a grey one that came with this iMac?
27" iMacs are new enough that they can't run Leopard (OS 10.5), nor can they run some of the earlier versions of Snow Leopard. The installer on the disc should check for this & refuse to attempt an install if it is the wrong one, but if you are trying to boot from the disc to start the install it will never get that far. This is because the earlier OS versions lack the necessary extensions to support the latest hardware in the iMac. Thus, a safe boot won't help since there is still no source for them.
Also, if you have installed any aftermarket memory modules, it is possible they are not fully up to spec & incapable of running Snow Leopard. You may be able to verify this by starting up from the Apple Hardware Test, which you run from the original grey system disc by following the instructions printed on it. If you get an error with "MEM" in it, it means one or more memory modules is defective. If they are aftermarket ones, contact the supplier for replacements. If they are Apple-supplied modules they are covered by a one year Apple warranty (or 3 year one if you bought the Applecare protection plan).

  • Blackberry Tour 9630 freezes while starting up and won't turn on

A few hours ago I uninstalled an app on my Tour, and was asked whether to reboot now or later to complete the process. So I selected to reboot now.  The phone turned off and while the white loading symbol was feeling up it all the sudden stopped a little more than halfway loaded.  So I removed the battery to try and start the process over and it continues to stop at the same point in loading process and won't turn on.  I have never connected my Blackberry to computer before.  Not sure what to do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated,  I really can't go without a phone this week end.

Same thing is happening to mine. They said update the software but it wont do it while rebooting. Geez, what to do. Need my phone badly as well.

  • Imac keeps freezing Problem started with Snow Leopard

After I loaded in Snow Leopard, my Imac began to have beach balls and freeze ups. Then I loaded in Lion hopeing it would help but it
seems worse with constant freeze ups. I had the compauter in for a tune up at a Mac store but it was good for a few days, but now
it seems to happen more often. I dumped Flip for Mac thinking this was causing the conflict to no avail. I have run the utility program
and it did not come up with problems

Revert to Snow Leopard and solve your SBBOD issues. Upgrading never fixes underlying issues. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html for more details.

  • IMac constantly Freeze while watching Youtube or Flash-based clip

    Hi everyone
It is really getting on my nerves every time that I was watching Youtube or Website using Flash, the machine crashes and crashes and crashes!!!!
I did the Hardware Test and it didn't find any problem with Hardware.
I used the installation DVD to repair Disk Permission also
Could anyone please please help me how to trouble-shoot this seem-to-be-permanent issue???
Thank you very much in advance.
    James
P.S. My iMac was middle 2009, with Model identifier iMac9,1, SMC version 1.44f0

First do what whyisitsohard (HUH?) suggests. If that does not resolve the issue take a look at how much free space is available on your Hard drive. I would not recommend running Mac OS X with less than 10% free space remaining on your startup volume. The free space is used for hidden swap files that Mac OS X needs do to virtual memory, and for other temporary files used by the system. Once free space gets low, the remaining free space becomes more and more fragmented into small pieces. That makes it hard for Mac OS X to operate efficiently. This issue is most apparent when watching videos.

  • Why does elements 13 crash and freeze while starting up while using windows 8.1

Have had problems with crashes and freezing up with both elements 12 and now elements 13.   Thinking there are problems with Windows 8.1 and adobe premiere elements.   Can anyone shed any light on this issue?

Perhaps you also need to reset the preferences file for your both PSE12 and PSE13.  The suggested method for earlier versions (10 and 11) was posted here:
<can't get pse10 to take my styles, have had pse 10 since 2011 bought pse13 and installed, uninstalled pse10 inorder to get pse13 to install easer, I reinstalled pse10 but now the stules I have do not appear in the effect section. I have checked BOTh secti>
Read post number 3 to see if it works in PSE12 and PSE13.  Do 12 first and then 13.
