  • MacTel iMac and the dreaded fan noise...

a buddy of mine bought an iMac G5 2 Ghz last June and mentioned having no problem with the dreaded fan noises of said iMac. fast forward to last week when we got together to do some nerdy stuff in front of same iMac when he casually mentions to me. "my fans have been going crazy lately" ... not that his iMac sounds like a jet turbine or anything, but it got me thinking about the new "Intel Inside" Macs. and with two cores inside, goodness!
so b4 i rush out and buy one of these babies -- i'm going to wait and see regarding the fans. but it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
    CMM.
PS.. i am a bit amazed (and elated!) that the Intel Inside Macs have already become a reality -- 6 months sooner than expected. (who would have thought!)
    YAY!

    Miriam,
Maybe I was a little premature. I just went to abc.com to watch the last episode of Men in Trees and here's the results.
With ABC video running (maybe quarter screen size), the CPU was running at a steady 65-70%, CPU temp 69.8, CPU fan 4791-4814 steady (very loud).
Didn't seem to be a high bandwidth download as net was clicking at 117 Kb/sec.
Oh well...don't really consider this very good performance. The fan went down to the 2700 range on reduced, but then the video was choppy. Good thing my capacitors are leaking...Maybe I'll get a Core 2 under my 3 year Apple Care.

  • Intermittent shutdown, fan noise

I have an iMac G5 ALS, 17", 1.8ghz that I bought new from Apple in August '05.
The serial # starts with W853.
It has always had an over active fan IMHO, but I've read of this complaint often on these forums, so I never paid it much mind. In June '07 the iMac started intermittently shutting itself down so I brought it in. I had Apple Care thankfully so they swapped out quite a few parts, including some sensors, the Logic Board, and PSU.
I brought the iMac home, and within a day or too the hyper-active fan noise was back. However, the iMac was not shutting itself down randomly anymore... until today.
The system log shows me, "AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110"
It happened once, I haven't been able to reproduce it yet, but it of course has me worried.
I have central air in the house, the room never gets above 75 degrees.
The CPU at rest/casual computing is around 65 degrees with the fan whirring away at 5600rpm.
Hard Drive at 44 degrees, fan at 3206rpm.
WDC 49 degrees, fan at 2500rpm.
What is the real story with the iMac G5? Are there things I can actually do to keep this machine running while avoiding intermittent shutdowns, and reigning in this fan noise?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your experiences and advice.

I'm having a similar problem with the sudden shutdowns but not with the fan noise. This just started today after being out for a few hours I noticed that the computer was shut down instead of asleep. I booted it up and it shut down within a few minutes. This continued for several attempts and now I can't even get passed the startup sequence before it shuts down. I can't run any tests on it 'cause it will shut down in the process if not before. I am still under the extended warranty so I guess I will be taking mine in as well. What could be the cause of this? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

  • IMac G5 17" Lower Fan Noise / DIY

    hi,
my imac rev. b makes loud fan noise, the lower fan (cpu?) should be replaced i think.
I try to order it by the apple diy program, but when the drop down menue appears where i must select it, there is nothing to select. so i can not go on ordering the fan.
chat agents and phone support are absolutely unwilling to help me with that issue.
what can i do? is there anybody out there who managed it to order a fan kit?
I tried it with all browsers i have on my system, i will not work

I have also had problems with a sound, more like a high pitched noise. I have had the fans replaced and a new mother board put in by Apple. (I have Apple Care and they have been great.) I had the computer down to a genius bar twice. The second time they did a re install for me. It seemed to fix things for about a week. I'm back to the noise being louder. (It wasn't like this when I first purchased the computer in Dec. 2004) This has all started in the past couple of months. Now I am back to the fans going full blast.(Just reading mail will start it going.) I put the computer to sleep, it stops. When I wake it up, it starts all over. I have to shut it down for a few minutes and then start up again. That solves the problem. The noise gets so bad it can be heard throughout my home. It's getting annoying. My next step is to ask Apple to replace my computer with the latest one that has come out. I'm still sold on the Mac and love it. I'm trying to maintain a positive attitude about getting it fixed.

  • IMac G5 bootup with fan noise but no display

Hi all the experts out there,
I'm new to iMac and need help to resolve the following issues:
    1) My iMac went on sleep mode and follow by a big fan noise.
    2) Able to power down but when I press the power button follow by the Command, Option, P and R keys, no response from the iMac (no screen display but power indicator is lighted)
    3) Anyway to eject the Disc manually from the slot? By pressing the eject key from the keyboard does not eject my CD. I'm trying to eject the music CD from the slot, so that I can put in the system disc to try on other mode of recovery.
    Any help is welcome.

  • My iMac monitor makes a "fan" noise that won't shut off. What is and how do I shut it off

My iMac monitor is making a "fan" noise. What is it and what do I do to shut it off?

Fans run to stablize temperatures on your iMac. The fans cannot be turned off.
If you think the fans run excessively, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Intermittent metallic fan noise

Occasionally, I hear this metallic fan-like noise going on in my Mini. I have heard this on and off before, not on a daily basis though; rather it happens every few months. I called Apple Support around a year ago about it (before it was out of warranty), but I can't remember what it is or if I should be concerned about it.
This morning, it occurred upon waking the computer up for the first time from it's overnight sleep. The noise built up slowly, then went on for 5 minutes or so, and eventually stopped. This is the usual pattern; however, it can last much longer. There doesn't seem to be any reason for it happening, as I hadn't done anything other than wake the computer, and there isn't any specific time it begins. Sometimes, it will happen after the Mini has been working for serveral hours, and not necessarily doing anything that's very taxing, such as researching on the internet or while writing a document or email.
Any idea what it is and if I should be worried?

Just to clarify, this is a mid-2007 built Mini that I bought new at my local Apple store, in June 2008. The Optical Drive, SuperDrive 8x, was replaced in Dec 2009, after repeated failures to read discs that worked fine in my MacBook Pro, would not seat discs properly, and would not eject discs after they got stuck inside the drive.
This can't be an Optical Dirve issue, as there was nothing in the drive when this noise happened. It is very much a fan noise, but not sure why it would be happening so sparadically.

  • 21.5 iMac i3 3.06 fan noise

Hello all. I am a longtime Mac user (going back to the first LCD iMac.
Anyway... I ordered the new base iMac and noted that it's fan was on all of the time and was quite loud. It always felt very cool to the touch. I assumed that was just the new reality with the intel processors (my last mac was a 1.5 gig g4 powerbook 12).
I ended up exchanging that computer with a new one since it had the yellowed screen (bottom right).
Anyway... the screen on my new iMac is great... but now the computer is dead silent. The back is pretty darn hot too.
Just wondering what the norms are? Most temps are in the 50's... and the GPU is in the low 60's.

Hello, I think it could be two things: one, the fans are very revolutionized or there's a problem with the GPU fan and the HD cable. I'll explain: My iMac was very noisy, I called Apple and they said me that I have to give the computer where I bought to change it. And the problem was that the HD cable wasn't in their place, and it was touching the GPU fan.
PD: Do you try to reset SMC? (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964)

  • IMac Intel 8.1 fan run on

I have acquired a pre loved Aluminium 2Ghz 20in iMac (Early 2008 I believe) model 8.1 according to the system profiler.
The system works flawlessly, however the system fans ramp up to an annoying loud level after about 2 minutes of power up. They do switch off when system enters sleep though.
As it has an upgraded HDD I thought that would be the place to start...check the temp sensor is there and connected.
The sensor is on the HDD and appears to be in correct location and is plugged in.
I have checked the sensor resistance and it is around 35M ohms and drops as the sensor is warmed up so it appears to at least sense the change in temperature. Checking the sensor on the DVD drive, I get similar results so either both sensors are fritzd or the HDD one is OK.
Checking these measurements directly on the board to eliminate possible connector issues I get same results so it appears the connection to the main board is good also.
I have done an SMU reset and PRAM reset and no effect on issue.
Any ideas on what to try next

    HI,
Hopefully you also acquired the install disc that originally came wih this iMac. If so, boot from that disc, run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairs. If the startup disk appears to be ok then that issue is eliminated.
Insert the install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode

  • IMac intel core 2 duo noise

I recently bought a new imac with core 2 duo cpu. But I notice a unwelcome sound out of the machine. Its not the standard zooooom you here but an other sound aswel it sounds like my fan dont spin in the same rpm but sometimes faster and lower , quick after eachother it isnt a nice sound. i only hear it in a silent room but its quite annooiiing. Some with the same prob? Or someone that can post his oppion with his/her machine?
Sorry for my bad language (belgian)

OK, for a followup: I moved it into another room and shut the door and ran it all day. No smell. I think it's my ceiling fan now...
The popping is actually more like a dull clicking. Almost like a cable is rubbing on a fan somewhere. I tried to upen it up like my old g5 imac and, well, there isn't any way to get it open, that I found (not like I tried that hard either). The days of popping the back and user replacing parts is GONE! It's a bummer... From a curiosity standpoint, I'd like to see what's 'under the hood' although my guess is that it would look more like a notebook with the screen as the top piece of bread in an expensive sandwich. The only thing 'user replaceable' is the memory, and I'm amazed that they allow lowly mortals even that close to the inerds. Memories of the original mac are showing...
I'll take it to the local Apple service hangout and see if they can figure it out. I got the vram upgrade so trying to return it to the local Apple Store is out of the question, and the 'local' Apple Store is over 2 hours away.
It seems a lot faster, but since my earlier one was a 1.8 G5, it's no wonder.
Funny thing is too that I was almost ready to order one of the now older core duo machines and somethig stopped me. Next day, I checked out the systems and saw the core 2 duo and more memory and with the proc upgrade, applecare and the vram, was less than the one quoted the night before... COOL!!! Jumped on that bugger... With standard shipping, had it just less than a week later. Chinese slave labor or not, the thing rocks... Just feel bumbed at having to take it in now for simple parts swaps, if any are ever needed (knock on wood)...

  • My iMac makes louder whirring fan noises and gets really hot.

Should I go to the service center and have it checked out?

Before you do, do a SMC reset and download and install iStat Pro (Google it) and post the actual temps.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • IBook or iMac? Fan noise?

Hey, I am thinking about getting either an iBook or an iMac.
I have read that the iMacs make allot of fan noise? Is this so? That might be a problem, as I will be using it for recording guitar and vocals quite often.
Anyone here use an iMac to record stuff in garageband?
    Cheers
    see ya

my G5 iMac sits in the only room in my house that does not have AC and even with the processor averaging about 165*F I barely hear anything over a purr. the room is a sun room, and I live in Santee, California, which isn't exactly cool during the day if you know what I mean. the SuperDrive is the biggest improvement, even though it is audible during use, my old G4 used to sound like it was trying to take off like a turbofan engine. while the heat of the thing scares me a little, I feel confident that it can handle it. I've not really tried to max it out, but in a room that averages 85+ degrees during the day she's holding up well I never used my G4 to record in garage band, but I've made simple techno songs, just by clicking with the mouse, and adjusting things, it took for-freakin-ever to do it that way, so I will be getting better equipment now that the new imac can handle things better.

  • 2 years of this fan noise....check my temperature?

so i've been battling the dreaded imac g5 (first gen) fan noise for the entire 2 years I've had the computer now. one midplane (out of 3 now? 4?) almost fixed the problem, but it had other problems. For the past year I have just let it go as it was in a room with a noisy window air conditioner and a noisy PC. Now I've moved and am back in a quiet room and the noise is unbearable.
Took it back to the apple store but they said it wasn't noisy (and it seemed less noisy there, not near as much "whine", but that could have just been all the ambient noise as well - music, crowded store, etc)
but my real question here is what temp should the imac g5 (1.8ghz) run at? at idle my CPU usually sits at about 155, under load about 165-170. this is acceptable right?
maybe its just a sign to give up on this machine and be an early adopter with the new mac pros and get to deal with whatever engineering probs are there (had the cube before this, bought right when it came out, cracked case, flaky sensor, temp problems, etc) or learn my lesson and wait another 9 months or so
I'm also having USB problems, but Apple told me they couldn't replace it (logic board) because my headphone jack is broken and that part isn't under warranty even though the USB is. sigh

Hi Eric, you might get more help posting in the G5 forum. This forum is for the iMac Intel Core Duo.

  • IMac i7 - Strange CPU-fan problem!

    Hi,
my name is Chris and I'm living in Germany. Sorry for my pigeon english, I'm not very good in languages... Nevertheless I will try to describe my problem.
I have received my iMac last saturday. It's an i7 with 2TB hard drive. On sunday suddenly the CPU-fan went nuts, spinning with about 3500 rpm. At that time there was no heavy CPU load at all.
Neither P-RAM- nor SMC-resets fixed the problem, the CPU-fan was running at full speed all the time. On monday morning (the i7 was switched during the night), the problem was still persisting. Hence, I contacted Apple and they promised to send me a replacement for the i7 in about three weeks.
Later on this monday, I received a package with additional 4GB of memory I had ordered for the iMac. Although the iMac was making noise comparable to a 747, I decided to build in the additional 4GB of RAM, just to play a bit around with an "8GB machine". The assembly of the additional memory was pretty easy, basically everything was working fine (memory wise). But the CPU-fan was still continuously at around 3500 rpm.
Afterwards, I decided to clean up the computer a bit by using the "automatic" script within "Onyx". I started the procedure and left the room.
When I came back about 1 hour later, there was total silence in the room. In first instance I wasn't surprised very much, because the iMac was obviously in the sleep mode. But I was really surprised when I woke it up again: The CPU- fan was back to normal, spinning with 940rpm. Almost completely silent.
Any ideas what happened? Can there be a connection between the "fan-went-nuts-issue" and the Onyx scripts?
What shall I do? My iMac is behaving now, but I have already ordered replacement...
    Best wishes,
    Chris

Yes, I have seen this thread, thank you.
When the CPU-fan started to spin at 3800, one of the first thing I tried was putting the iMac into the sleep mode. After I had done so, I woke it up back again almost immediately (about 1 minute later) by pressing the space bar. But for some reason, the iMac woke (with normal fan noise) and then immediately fall back into sleep (after being about 10 seconds awake). A "proper wake up" was not possible, since it was sort of an infinitely loop of waking up and falling asleep. A reboot via the power button was necessary, whereby the fan went back to 3800 rpm.
And then I performed this Onyx-run (as mentioned in my first post), and afterwards the iMac went to sleep mode automatically. It stayed in the sleep mode for about an hour or so, and after my next wake up call it was cured.
Really strange. Either it was cured by the maintenance-things Onyx did to the cache/system files, or by being in the sleep mode for about one hour. I also can't exclude influence of our Lord, since I was behaving in the last year...
Somehow I have lost my trust in that machine. Even after the fan went back to normal behavior I am still not sure if I should cancel the replacement order... I am open for recommendations from your side.
    Best wishes,
    Chris

  • TA25225 Display Flickers in my 21" Imac Intel. This happened after the fan noise in my machine. I also reported the problem and gave to the service centre, but the problem still persist. Please help. I purchased it 3 - 4 weeks ago

    Hello,
I purchased my imac intel 21" 3-4 weeks ago and in the 2nd week i faced an issue with the machine. When i switched on in, there was a fan noise and a white screen. The machine had hanged. I reported the problem and gave to the service centre. After testing for a week, they said that there is no problem with the imac. Again i faced the same problem after receiving it from the service centre. They again tested the machine for 3-4 days and reported as no problem with the machine. Couple of days back, I received the machine from the service centre, and on the same day when i switched it on, there are flickers in the display. Please help me solve the issue. I am from India. The service here is very bad.
    Hope for a resolution
    Thanks

    Hello RedDevil07
Yes I agree with seventy one. It's common sense to do this, especially now. I would also contact AppleCare and report this issue with them, it will get documented and you will have a caseID that you can refer to when talking to them in the future should this issue go one.
Be polite with AppleCare and your AASP. Hopefully everyone is being honest and trying to help you and not what might appear to be the opposite.
Patience is a virtue, but I thoroughly understand your frustration.
Let us know how it goes, we are here to help in whatever way we can.
I encourage you to contact AppleCare to report this experience and get their recommendations. There is an expectation that you should have that AppleCare is there to help you as a customer. I am sure they will too!
