IMac (Intel) shuts down unexpectedly, a semi-loud 'boom!' is heard.
Hello, I'm new here.
Something just happened when I was using my Mac late at night yesterday, and when I was just searching for iTunes Library in Finder (which, in the end I couldn't find it), my screen went black and a boom sound was heard. After I calmed myself from the shock, a smell like burning plastic came into my senses. To check is everything okay, I pressed the power button and it started up fine. So I decided to shut it down manually and goto sleep.
When I woke up this morning, I tried to boot up the Mac and all I can feel is the fan running in its normal speed.
I've been using this Mac about 12 hours every day for a week now and I think I may have overheated the computer.
The apps that I used before the shut down:
- iTunes
- Mozilla Firefox
- Tweetdeck
Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my Mac? I can't seem to find the solution anywhere :(
Even the small caps in today's computers can make a nice "pow" noise and let some seared electrolyte out to wrinkle your nose.
The good news is that usually in this case, the offending part is easy to find for any technician worth his/her salt.
It's not normal use that causes caps to fail. It's either age or a manufacturing defect, usually an impurity in the electrolyte that allows a resistive bridge to build up until the ohmic heating causes a short, then kerpow.
Get it looked at and corrected by a service provider.

IMac G5 shuts down unexpectedly
Hi friends at Apple Discussions,
This week my iMac has shut down by itself unexpectedly about once a day. Immediately after it shuts down it will not start up, although after a 10 minute wait or so, it will start up and run just fine. Nothing had been changed, hardware or software, recently that should have caused this.
It is a Rev A machine. Serial number is QP507XXXX. Within the first 6 months of ownership, she had a power supply failure that was repaired under warranty by an Apple Retailer. Everything has been great since then.
I understand that this might be another Rev A hardware failure issue and I believe I am still inside the three year repair window. However, I also understand that there are often preliminary steps to take before jumping to that conclusion.
Any advice as to what action should be taken next? I appreciate your expertise.
James
iMac G5 1.8 GHz 20" Rev A 768 MB RAM (Crucial). Mac OS X (10.3.9) iBook G4 12"Status report...
In previous posts I did not mention that I am not under AppleCare. The tech was willing to help but suggested that I might try isolating/replicating the problem on my own. Otherwise, if I take it in and they find it is a software issue, not the hardware issue, I get charged.
His suggestion: Try an archive and install for a couple of days, see if problem still occurs. That will determine if it is a hardware or software problem. Actually, I believe I'll do a clean install instead for a couple of days, as my entire hard drive is cloned & bootable on my external LaCie drive. This is an inconvenience and steals my time, but its easy enough to do, I guess.
So I'll do it, but the question lingering in the back of my mind is...is this actually necessary? Does software shut a machine down randomly and prevent it from booting up again for the duration of some unknown 'cooldown' period? Besides, the only software change I have made relativly recently was installing Camino I am highly skeptical that its a software issue. But because I am not an expert, I will follow the suggestions.
Any comments on this?

In the last three day the iMac has unexpectantly shut down, stopped responding, posted four panic reports and has been very difficult to reboot without several attempts. But then will go through a day without any problems. This morning it just stopped doing anything. Unplugged it from the wall, waited several hours and then rebooted without a problem. Go figure! What are my next steps??
If you have AppleCare, call them up & let them deal w/it.

Early iMac 2009 shuts down unexpectedly Yosemite only
So i have been having this problem ever since Yosemite released. I would be browsing the internet and the computer just powers off...I turn it back on and browse again, it could be an hour, it could be 10 mins before it does it again..
I wiped the Hard Drive and tried a Clean install of Yosemite. Same exact problem.
Wiped the drive again and Installed Snow Leopard and updated it to Mavericks. I have been on Mavericks for a few months No issues. So i decided i would try a clean install of Yosemite again. Fire it up do all the updates, start to browse and off it goes within the first 5 mins on a clean install.
I have replaced my HD and one stick of memory (before Yosemite came out) after i had this problem i replaced the power supply. I have ran the memory test and it passes. I tried the stress tests and the computer stays running. it seems like its only when i browse the internet, I haven't tried any other browsers except safari right now.
I cannot run the AHT as i do not have the original install disc.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for the reply. I have done a lot of searching on this, it seems there are others with the early '09 mac that have the same shutdown symptoms. Although i have not found anyone that had it shut off specifically from browsing, only when the computer was under heavy load. I can run Photo Shop for an extended period of time with out issue. Right after i posted 2 hours ago, my computer shut off. I have been browsing ever since. I did an ETreCheck I'm sure theres nothing out of the ordinary since this is a clean install of Yosemite. but ill post it anyways. Im just hoping someone else had a similar issue and resolved it. I like the new features of Yosemite and would prefer it over Mavericks...

IMac 27" Intel i7 Shuts Down Unexpectedly
My 18-month old iMac has started shutting down unexpectedly, it will not restart normally, i have to remove & reconnect the power to the machine and then it will restart.
However it will shut down again soon afterwards.
It would appear that the longer the machine is disconnected from the power or remains in the off condition the longer it will remain on when restarted.
Therefore i am assuming this could be heat related?
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
What was the reason for failure and who did you resolve? These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

My imac shuts down unexpectedly and now a fan is running??
Hello,
I have been working on my iMac all morning and it shut down twice within a half hour and I had to press the start button on the back to get it going again. Now their is a loud fan running and I have no idea what is going on. Help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!Hi ebeugs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information about resetting the SMC here:

IMac shuts down unexpectedly since Yosemite
So, I apologize in advance for the long story:
I have a late-2009 27" iMac i7 with 8gb Ram and a 1TB HD. I updated my OS to Yosemite soon after it came out. Now, I admit I don't use the computer that often, so it took a while to notice the issues but, we first realized there was a problem in early November when my husband could not download a game (presumably because of the wi-if connectivity issues supposedly fixed in the latest update). It was around a week after he finally was able to download tthe game, that he was playing it and the computer would just shut down out of nowhere. No warning, just shut down and restart with the "your computer shut down unexpectedly" screen. Now, because it happened so many times, I started to get worried about all of my photos and music that is stored on thIs computer, so I went to do a back-up on my time capsule. This was when I noticed my computer had at some point been renamed (not by any human) to "my Computer (3)" when prior to yosemite (as far as I can tell) it was named "my computer". Also at this point I could not for the life of me get the time capsule to back up the computer as it was looking for "my computer" and all that was available was "my computer (3)". This is when it had been working flawlessly for years. I ultimately had to wipe the TC completely, reformat it and start a back up from scratch. It was for the short period of time that the time capsule was not connected to the computer that we noticed it was no longer shutting down unexpectedly. however, one the TC was reconnected and doing a back up, anything extra that you would be doing (with the exception of web surfing) caused the computer to crash. So, simple fix, right? Turn off the auto back ups while and try to remember to turn them on every so often. fine , dandy, whatever. However, I have done the latest yosemite update and the wi-if still does not seem to be staying connected, disconnecting every few minutes. Now I'm seemingly having more issues with a game that is well within the limits for my computer and the game will not start. There are just so many things going wrong with the computer that I'm really concerned that everything is going to disappear off of it one day. Anybody have any clues as to my computer's issue??Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -

P.S I know that it doesn't say that i own and "iMac" on my iCloud, but i do. I've traded it for my old MacBook Pro with Retine displayThat kind of panic is usually caused by a faulty memory chip; however, any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to the problem:
Parallels
WavTap
Soundflower
ProTools
PACE Interlok driver
If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you check that all are up to date, and if they are, uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can determine which (if any) is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.
Back up all data before making any changes. -
IMac (Late 2008) (8,1) (20") Shuts Down Unexpectedly
Hello everyone, here's my problem:
Every know and then my iMac (Late 2008) 8,1 20" shuts down unexpectedly, more than once. And usually happens when I'm stressing the computer by clicking on things or just at random times. The computer however seems to be hot on top when it does shut down. When the computer shuts down it then turns back on after about 10 seconds. I've called Apple they had me reset the PRAM this worked but then after a few weeks the problem had begun again. I don't want to take it into the Apple store just yet because I really need my iMac right now and I want to know if there are any other options I have to fix this besides taking the iMac into an Apple store. Also could it be that I have to little RAM? I only have 1 GB or ram and my bus speed is: 1.07 GHz, Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz. Oh and I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.4).
Hope you can can figure out whats wrong or what might be causing this problem. Also if you have any questions or need more info to solve the problem, just feel free to ask and I will answer them.Check out this thread and see if it pertains to your problem.

IMac G5 Computer Shuts Down Unexpectedly
No unusual circumstances, computer has shut down unexpectedly without warning four times this morning.
Any ideas?Depending on your exact model, you might be eligible for Rev A repair extension program or Rev B Extension. Check and see if your numbers fall within the appropriate ranges. You can check your model here iMac release dates.

21.5" iMac shuts down unexpectedly. How do I fix this?
My iMac (Aug 2010 purchase) shuts down unexpectedly when I put it to sleep occasionally.
Set the Screen Saver Preference to Never.
Set the Computer Sleep to Never, the display to 5 or 10 min. and uncheck all the boxes.
Check to be sure that Sleep or Shutdown are not Scheduled.
Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then test the computer for a few days, only sleeping it from the drop down menu when your done at the end of the day.

Why does my iMac shut down unexpectantly?
Why does my iMac shut down unexpectantly?
Check System Preferences > Energy Sacer > Schedule

My 27" Imac (A1312/EMC2390) keeps shutting down unexpectedly with no warning or "screen of death". So far I reset the SMC, and zapped the PRAM. I even replaced the power supply but the problem continues. My error and system logs seem unhelpful too. Can anyone help me out?
You can get a shutdown like that if the computer gets too hot. Make sure the air intakes on the bottom and the exhaust vent on the top are clean and are not blocked by something in your workspace like papers or the back of the computer being too close to part of the furniture. You need a good six inches (15cm) of clearance between the exhaust slot and other objects or surfaces.
Anti-virus/internet security software, especially the "pay for" kinds, can increase operating temps. So can third-party backup software furnished with many "name-brand" external hard drives.
Fan motors and/or temperature sensors can fail. If you have the original grey disks that shipped with your iMac, find the on that has Apple Hardware Test (AHT) and run it. If you have a failed heat sensor or fan motor, it will detect it with an error code containing "SNS" if it's a bad sensor or "MOT" if its a bad fan motor.

IMac G5 (Intel): shut down, and won't turn on
I've had my iMac now for well over a month now, I'd say about 2 months, and after the first week I removed the default memory stick that came with it, and installed 4 GB (2x2). The computer has been running fine with the new memory for over a month, so I'm pretty sure the memory is not an issue, the computer itself has been working perfect up until tonight.
So I was doing my normal web surfing, and little bit of graphics editing when out of nowhere the iMac just shut down, like it went from a regular screen to just black screen. I then proceeded by hitting the power button, and got nothing. Held the power button down for 15-20 seconds, then hit the power button once again holding for 2-3 seconds. Now I hear the hard drive sound, like it's starting up the hard drive, but I never hear the Apple "aaahhhh" sound, nor does my screen even turn on. It would seem as if it just dies from there but it's obviously not, because if I goto tap the power button again for 2-3 seconds it won't make the same noise the hard drive makes when it's turned on. But if I hold the power button down again for 15-20 seconds, then proceed by tapping the power button again afterwards I can hear the hard drive sound like it starts up again, but still no screen no Apple sound.
*Failed Fixes Tried:*
- removed memory and reinserted memory.
- remove power cord for 30 seconds, plug back in, start up.
- make sure the power cord is plugged in to an outlet with power (I more than obviously think it is receiving power due to the hard drive sound starting up, but maybe the computer is not being fed enough voltage which is why it's not starting up? Then again it's still odd because I've been using it like this fine for months.Take it in for service.

Hi bria90,
That is not good thing to have. Lets see if we can get it to boot up normally. Start with checking out the article below and go over each troubleshooting option that is available to get it back up and running. It will have you check things Safe Boot and resetting the NVRAM.
