IMac (Intel) starting up in "DOS"?
I just got an iMac 20" (1.5gb RAM - 1gb of which is 3rd party/Kingston, 250 gb hd). When I start up or restart, the screen goes gray, then black and it goes through a boot process (white text on black) that looks something like starting up in MS-DOS. It eventually gets to the login screen and otherwise seems to work fine.
Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated.

It sounds like you are starting up in verbose mode. Hold the Command-Option-P-R keys during startup and this will reset your pram and nvram. This should put your default back to full mode. Keep on holding the keys until you hear at last 3 bongs (each bong is a restart of the computer).

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Or if you have installed new RAM, try reinstalling it or the iMac's original RAM making sure that the modules are fully seated in the slots.
Then if it won't light, seek sercice from your Local Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store. > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ -
Imac intel start up problems and fan runs constantly on high
I got my Imac 17 Intel Duo Core on March 16th and 10 minutes after I started it the screen went black and a little light started flashing on the lower right. After holding the power button it finally turned off but would not boot up, just that black screen and blinking light. I was told by tech to unplug everything for a few minutes then put the plug in just the Imac, then hold the power button down while plugging it in. Well it started after that but the fan was on high constantly. This was remedied by unplugging everything for a few minutes and then starting back up normally. Now it runs in stealth mode being virtually silent. If your Imac intel is making noise it's not normal. Check out this site for noise problems.

What I have heard happens sometime is one of the temperature sensors is either not put back on properly during reassembly or it comes of soon after. Turned off my new iMac for a few days. Tried to start up and get the power light, a short whirring sound, and a black screen. No blue, no chime. Tried unplugging the power cord at the machine and at the wall. Has anybody else had this problem?
Don't know what the problem was exactly, but the Apple Store in Pentagon City gave me a new computer as the fix.

My Imac Intel 17" does a double start up sometimes
Twice now in the two weeks I've had my Imac Intel it did a double start. I press the on button and it does the mac sound, then about 3 or 4 seconds later while the screen is still black I hear the mac sound again and it boots again. Has anyone else had this problem and is it a prelude to bad things to come??
The first thing that your Mac does when you hit the power button is check the RAM, if the RAM appears fine it sounds the startup chime. Next it starts looking for a boot volume. It sounds like this process is being short circuited and starting over; checking the RAM, sounding the startup chime and then looking for the boot volume again.
Perhaps you should startup from your Install DVD and use Disk Utility to repair your startup volume if perhaps something isn't kosher.

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

I keep receiving an error message when its starts.
Message says something like:

I downloaded the upgarde 3.0.1 form apple's website but I get a message saying that the update is not needed...

Imac intel freezes while starting
Hi,
my friend's imac intel duocore freeze in the late stages of the starting process. This appeared after running latest software update package, including iphoto, ipod, itunes, quicktime, keynote ....
Next, I started from install disc, repaired permissions, repaired disc with disc utility, which reported some errors, but told me, it was able to repair.
Unfortunately, this did not change anything!!
What should I do?
- run diskwarrior (3.0.3)?
Or will I have to install a new system?
If yes, is there a way to keep the old data?
The other thing I missed: when booting from cd, I expected to be able to see the harddrives data, but it was not! How can I access it.
If nothing helps, I'll run the imac as a slave disk of my ibook to backup!!
I'll hope there is someone to assist me a little bit!

We don't know what machien you have or the version of OS X it is running because you haven't completed your profile. I would start though by doing a SMC reset.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -

Intel imac wont start after changing permission
intel imac wont start after i changed my hard drive permission to let me read and write, then i clicked apply to all enclosed files.i turned it off no problem. then it never started up again in os x. the grey screen with apple logo appears,then after a minute it restarts, and will keep doing that if i let it. i can start up in windows xp, but i dont know how to do anything in windows xp that will affect os x. i can use the hard drive in target mode, but i cant figure out how that can help me. i use a macbook to view target disk. ive spent hours looking through help and support. finally i do not have the os install disks. PLEASE HELP!

Restart normally. Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the commands in the Terminal application to avoid typos:
sudo su
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again. Now paste each of the following at the prompt and press RETURN after each.
chown root:admin /Applications
chmod 0775 /Applications
chown root:admin /Library
chmod 1775 /Library

Imac Intel will not boot up - 3 days old, light on, starts to spin...
I got an Imac Intel 20" from my husband on mother's day and it now will not turn on!! White light comes on, sounds like it is trying to boot and then nothing... blank screen, no beeps - have unplugged and restarted, tried a million key combination from the forums and still nothing... locked up once on "Garage?" software (according to son)... worked for 2 days...
Very dissapointed and sad... husband looking like the PC is still a better box even after breaking down and getting the Imac - can't help much because this is all new to him...
Help!If you bought your imac with a credit card anywhere in your home state(or within 100 miles of your home in another state), then you can return it within 30 days if you are unsatisfied. That is federal law, and a store cannot do anything to deprive you of those rights--no matter what they say (or what they print on the receipt under your signature). My Apple store tried to tell me they only allow returns for 2 weeks. I told them the were violating federal law and they were required to issue a credit for the amount of the return, and they reluctantly complied.
I believe credit card companies are now required to print those rules on your bill (mine does and I don't think it would do so voluntarily), so you can check the fine print on your last bill and read them.
So, if you meet the above requirements, take your imac back . Insist on a refund. Be firm. If the retail person won't do it, tell them you want to speak to a manager. Once they credit your account, walk up to another retail person and tell them you want to buy a 20" imac.
If the retailer won't credit your account, then call your credit card company, and tell them you tried to return a defective product within the 30 day limit that you bought in your home state, and you would like them to reverse the charges. -
I have an iMac (Intel) Desktop computer. It will not send a message to my Lexmark printer because it says "offline". My Lexmark printer is in working order as I have just successfully photocopied a document on it.
That message means that the computer cannot see the printer on its network.
Is the printer directly connected to the computer with a USB cable, or is it a network printer (either wireless, or wired to the router with an Ethernet cable)?

OS X install disk for iMac Intel
My imac intel HD needs repair. I booted with the Install disk. Started Disk Untilies app. I can not use the mouse to select, verify/repair permission or verify/repair disk. I can not quit the app via the mouse, only with the keyboard. Dose anyone have an idea what is going on? And how can I repair the HD.
To answer your questions.
1 Yes, it is the wired mosuse that shipped with the iMac.
2 Within the Disk Utilities app, the mouse wwill not allow me to select "Permissions or Reair bottons. They are noe grayed ot out. Also, I can not quit the app via the mouse. If I choose any options from the menu that offers a dialog box with options, I can not select any options. I can only use the keyboards Return key to choose the default option.
3. I ahve considered the mouse as a source of the problem. But when I ran the "Verify Disk" from the Disk Utilities on the HD, I get several "Illegal Name" response.
4. Also, from the OSX installer disk, I can not go beyond the 1st Installer page. The mouse, point & click, will not work. But no problem with the mouse when booting from the HD.
This is verey odd. Is it a faulty DVD installer disk?? Have been a Apple user from 1982 and Mac user since 84, I guess I expected a better product.
