IMac is Half Asleep

Recently, I've noticed that my iMac never sleeps or makes the display sleep. I made sure that it's set to sleep, and it works if I do it manually, but if I don't, I just get a dimmed (as if it was GOING to sleep) version of whatever was on my screen after 5 minutes. It's supposed to make the display sleep after 5 minutes, but it doesn't.
Now here's the strange bit: the sleep light is ON when the screen is dimmed as if the computer THINKS the display is asleep. But I usually just see a dimmed version of my screensaver. And the screensaver is still moving while it's dimmed. I tried disabling screen saver, but I get a dimmed version of my regular desktop with moving graphics such as the clock and CPU usage bars.

Try to boot in Safe mode, see if you are able: Hold down shift and then power on. For wireless keyboards, hold down shift after the chime.

Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

  • HT201272 When I download a previously purchased song to my iMac only half of the song plays

Any idea why only half of every song plays when I download a previously purchased album or song to my iMac?

Does the track play correctly in Quicktime Player?  If it does then it is an iTunes issue.  If it doesn't then it is possible the file was not completely downloaded, or is corrupt.

  • Imac with half the screen psychedelic

Mid-2008 iMac with "ATA Radeon HD 2400 XT" graphics card.  Just started going psychedelic on the exact left side of the screen.  Intermittent it seems but getting more permanent with use.  Everything works with the new colors, mouse clicks, etc., but the colors are all wierd and everything is fuzzed up.  Screenshot ends up looking like all is normal so I'm assuming this is a screen/graphic issue.
So I ran hardware test and it passed with no faults.  I reinstalled the OS (archive and install) with no improvement.  And I'm typing on the right hand side of the screen as the left is not usable.
From what I have found on similar problems online, this is a very expensive fix and not worth the cost of the repair when compared with new.  Questions:
Any other actions, tests, diagnostics I can take to confirm problem or (perhaps) repair?
If this is logic board or such, expensive to fix as I suspect?
Is this to be expected from a 3 1/2 year old machine?  My iBook is going on 7 years with no problems other than a dull screen and dead battery.
Given that I would not chance a new iMac again if this turns out ugly, what Mac alternative might be more reliable?
What to do with the old machine?  Ideas?
Yes I had bought Applecare, no I'm not criticizing Apple.  But I cannot afford a machine that is throwaway at 40 months.

Thought I'd update this in the hopes of getting at least a single idea or reply.  Took the machine to the Apple Store where the Genius Bar folks wired up a second monitor and confirmed (at least they think so) that it's the screen and not some hardware issue.
The problem is the intermittency of the whole problem.  For the past two weeks the screen has been fine, no psycedelic colors.  Now, I'm typing on the right half of my screen because the exact left side is all 60's mind-bending colors.  Everything works over there, but unless I can somehow do drugs only in my left eye, I'm stuck with a half a screen to work with.
Apple wants $400 to change out the screen, but I 1. don't trust it's the screen since it works SOME of the time, and 2. don't want to spend 1/3 the cost of new on a 3 1/2 year old computer.  Unfortunately I'm also leery right now about another Mac.  Fortunately my seven year old iBook is still plugging along.
    So, any suggestions?

  • Tried to load Yosemite and iMac crashed half way through. Stuck with a half-completed execution bar. What to do?

I'm trying to download Yosemite on my iMac. It's been stuck at the halfway point for an hour. I don't want to turn it off. But looks like its stuck.
    Any thoughts?

My iMac also took a VERY long time to load Yosemtite, and I'm not sure that it's all there. Every time it boots the bar only fills to about 30% then disappar and after a long 3 minutes or so, the desk top statrt to appear.  I think all of Apple's commercials/adds have installed. However the applications appear to be lacking.  Is the bar not supposed to load completely, and thereby indicate a full installation?  I'm confused - and frustrated.

  • New imac 2013 half screen black

We just purchased a new imac 27 in.  Woo hoo!  hmm the bottom 1/2 of screen is almost black- like 85% black.  Bummer.  Anyone else have this issue.  Apparently turning it on and off 100 times is not the solution.  I was hoping for a software / driver issue but I am beginning to think its the screen.  Anyone else have this in 2013?

  • IMac takes half a minute to go to sleep

When I logout from my account, I often then go to put it to sleep, but more often than not, when I click the sleep button, nothing happens. I wait for thirty seconds and then the screen goes black. If this was normal behavior, the screen would show some sort of feedback, right? I don't know what would be keeping the iMac awake, and I can't check from the login screen.

    Hello Macky,
Is this a 2012 iMac or newer? It may be trying to write a sleepimage.
See if it's related to the opposite problem...

I have tried many things - i have closed all applications unplugged all usb and firewire devices and turned of wifi but still on its own accord it awakes. I have also tried resetting the smc but to no prevail.

  • I go to use my imac and its asleep wont wake then if it does mouse is frozen

I am having an issue where if I go to use the computer for the first time say that day or having been on it earlier in the day and return to check mail a few hours later the screen has gone to sleep and I can press any or many buttons and try to wake it but eventually I have to hold down the shutdown power button to get it first to power off - then I can re start machine only to find when its started up again the mouse is frozen and cant be woken or unfrozen.
Help this was purchased only August or September 2012 and is frustrating beyond belief!

I just posted this response in another thread discussing the same problem:
Some users (me included) have had an intermittent wake from sleep problem since some point in OS X 10.6.x, right through Lion 10.7 and during some of Mountain Lion 10.8. For me the problem went away in 10.8.3, although I still see some users, like yourself, continue to experience the problem.
The 'fix' that worked for me was: System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • After iMac is asleep, it requires going though the network diagnostics screens to reconnect to the internet.  What happened and how can I fix that?

After the iMac has been asleep, it requires me to go through the Network Diagnostics screens to reconnect to the internet.  Why and how can I fix that?

Which model iMac do you have?  Which OS system are you using?  Need this information to provide you with the correct troubleshooting solution(s).
Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.

  • Unable to Connect to Internet for 10+ Minutes after iMac Wakes Up

This has been driving me crazy and any help would be appreciated. Apple has referred me to my ISP and my ISP has referred me to Apple. Every time my IMac (Intel Core 2 Duo) is awakened from Sleep, it takes around 10 minutes for it to connect to the internet. I'm using an ethernet cable to connect the Imac directly to my modum. If I use the same cable with my PC, it connects instantly. Once I'm on the internet (with the iMac) I have no problems. I never get booted off. It's only when the iMac has been asleep and needs to reconnect. I've seen similar problems on the boards but the solutions don't seem to take care of my issue. In System Preferences, my Location shows "Automatic" and Configure IPv4 shows "Using DHCP." I've restarted countless times and have reinstalled the operating software to no avail. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Do you have the Airport card still turned on?? If it is, then turn it off and this may speed things up a lot if your computer is trying to check a local wifi network.
When this happens, does it sort it if you remove the ethernet cable, and then put it back in? It may be that your router thinks the machine is still active, and your machine is trying to connect afresh. This has the router thinking you are asking to be connected twice, and the Mac thinking it isn't connected at all.
Let us know if any of this makes sense.
    Karn.
