IMac is starting with only 2 cpus

Hello,
Two weeks ago my iMac started restarting by itself. It couldn't start the OSX, but restarting just before the login screen. I was investigating this issue for a whole day until I found that if I set boot arguments to CPU=1 it starts just fine.
Today, I decided to try if it'll fail if I choose more than 1 cpu and so it started well with 2, but it wont with 4.
Does it mean 1 or 2 of my processor cores are dead? Is it even possible to have dead cores in a processor or it seems to be a configuration issue?
P.S.: My CPU is 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5 on Mid 2011 iMac
Thank you!

Okay, so I just tried and it seems that I can start 3 cores:

  • My PC won't start with only one push of the start button.

hi guys my pc won't start with only one push of the start button. It takes me 1 to 10 pushes for it to start. I encountered this main bios error once when my pc started but it fixed on its own. What could be the problem?

    Hi
The problem can be fixed by running a latest BIOS Update on your unit or if it is a mechanical issue it could be the power button itself.. you can call HP tech support if the notebook is still in warranty.. they'll be able to help you.
    Hope this helps.

  • Brand new iMac running slow with only 3% of HD used!

I just purchased a new iMAC 21.5" with 2.9 i5 and 8GB memory and literally have yet to add any programs except AI, ID and PS and its running very poorly. This is my first MAC and i'm very disappointed. I purchased this computer for school where I am getting my BS in media arts. I use an older 27" iMAC at school using all the same programs and more and my new computer doesn't hold a candle to its usability. For example, opening up the programs takes what I consider to be a long time being that there is nothing on the HD. While in PS, and trying to edit, without even having multiple windows open, or multiple layers, it will not instantly edit in the preview window. If and when it decides to edit the computer, then it prompts the color wheel buffer. I specifically told the guy at the store exactly what I would be using it for - to only run the Adobe programs and CC. Since owning the iMAC, I have updated the suggested programs from the apple store and had the most recent OS updates.
The model number of the computer: A1418 any help would be greatly appreciated! If I don't have the correct model I need - I will gladly make the unsaid large retail giant take it back, one way or another.

  • My iMac is starting with a safe boot

Why is my iMac starting up with a safe boot?

This might stop it booting in Safe Mode. Open Terminal in Utilities and copy/paste only
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
Hit return and enter your admin pword when requested. You won't see anything entered as you type it in. Then hit return again.
(Note: I've never had this happen, so don't know if this is effective or not. Found it in another thread here for this problem. If it doesn't help, it should at least be harmless. Maybe Linc can say; he's far more Unix literate than I. OK, found where it came from:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3965882?start=0&tstart=0)
So looks like either a PRAM Reset or the Terminal command will work.

  • Openbox always starts with only 1 desktop

can anybody tell me what's wrong with the following rc.xml entry?  I always get only 1 available desktop on startup, and then have to use the openbox gui configurator to tick up the number to 5 to enable them (then I tick back down to 4).
      <desktops>
        <number>4</number>
        <firstdesk>1</firstdesk>
        <names>
          <name>1</name>
          <name>2</name>
          <name>3</name>
          <name>4</name>
        </names>
        <popupTime>600</popupTime>
      </desktops>

When my xml edits don't work as I expect, I always check with xmllint or I use an online xml validator such as this one from w3c: http://validator.w3.org/#validate_by_upload

  • Each time I restart my iMac, it starts with a former configuration.

Even my keyboard is configured in a different language.
My dock comme with ? on appps I have ditroyed,...

Exactly which iMac model do you have? The following explains how to find it.
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Post the result here:
To post screen shot do this:
Press COMMAND-SHIFT-4 which will change the cursor to crosshairs.
Hold down the mouse button and use the crosshairs to select the part of the screen you wish to capture.
Release the button and the image will be saved to your Desktop.
Click on the Camera icon in the toolbar of the forum message editor.
Drag the image onto the Choose File button and click on the Insert button.

  • On opening 2 browser Tabs are displayed doubling the infomation how can I start with only one browser Tab?

each time I access firefox 2 tabs are created each with the same information. To retrieve the information I must manually close the second tab else the info will not display properly. I am wondering is there something I can do to stop this from happening? It happens with direct open or from a link and if allready on a web page and open another via link 2 more Tabs are created it can become very crowded and hard to know which was first tab created. I do hope you understand what is happening and hopefully there is a cure. Thanking you Graham Rice

  • IMac won't start with Thunderbolt Display connected after firmware update

After updating my thunderbolt display firmware to version 1.2 this morning via the App Store, my mid-2014 iMac won't start up with the external display connected.  I can get the iMac to start up only by disconnecting the display's thunderbolt connector. After the iMac comes up, I can reconnect the display and everything appears to function normally.  I've tried several restarts and the iMac won't start up with the display connected.  Anyone else experience this?

  • T400 does not start up with a battery and AC, but starts up with only AC.

I bought T400, 7417-CTO in Jan 2010. My T400 does not start up with a battery and AC power. I tried to start with only AC power after pulling out the battery, it worked fine. Even when I inserted the battery in T400, which was running perfectly with AC only, T400 seems to lose the power - more strictly speaking, it kept stoping and re-running several times, and finally it dead.
    a few possibilities
    1) a battery is dead - but it does not explain the failure with both AC and battery
    2) some hibernation issue - I plugged in and out the DIMM, and clock battery. I tried to keep pushing the power button trick, but it didn't work
    3) Mother board failure??
I really appreciate if you give me some advice on it.
    Wanyong

Thanks for all your kind and helpful comments.
Unfortunately, I don't have any friends who have Lenovo - or I don't have many friends here since I moved in the last summer. ;-)
After purchasing a new battery, I will update it. Hope that this thread helps someone who had/will have same prob. as mine.

  • Imac not starting up properly

When I restart my iMac it starts with a black screen and the word 'root' at the top left corner of the screen. What do I type in so that it takes me to the login page?
If anyone can help, greatly appreciate it...

Yeah it worked before...I forgot the admin password and the only way to change it was to reset it using the installation disk. I cancelled it before it completed and when I restarted the computer the black screen appeared.

    Hi Paula2808,
I’m sorry you are having trouble starting up your iMac, that must be quite frustrating. There are some troubleshooting steps I would suggest in order to get you up and running again.
First I suggest using the steps in this article for the Apple logo appearing -

  • I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.  My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook.  They are all associated with the same Apple ID.  How do I get all of my music on the laptop?

I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.  My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook.  They are all associated with the same Apple ID.  When I try to sync, I get a warning message stating that I will lose songs on my phone which aren't on the laptop.  How transfer my music from my phone to the laptop?

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

You are probably going to want to upgrade your memory (RAM). While 2 GB is the stated minimum, realistically 4 GB seems to be the consensus minimum. More is better.
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • IMac SLOWLY Starts Up With Progress Bar

Just the other day my iMac has started doing something very annoying: It starts up with a white screen and a gray progress bar, and it takes a long time to start. It does this each time I start it now. I have not added any new hardware/software. Any ideas?

That usually only happens if you had to manually force shut it down. See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 for details.
