IMac iSight G5 will not power up

Here's what got me here...
I installed a 500 gig drive about 6 months ago maybe. Annoying and time consuming, but everything went fine. Well so I thought anyways. In the last couple days, I began experiencing random freezing and kernel panics. I suspected a HD issue, but everything said it was fine, no problems. Tried zapping pram and the usual stuff. Then I had problems just getting the machine to turn the screen on much less show me anything at boot.
So I ran the hardware test at this point when it would finally behave long enough to run it, and it gave me a FAN2/4/8 : HDD FAN error. So I tear the computer apart tonite to see what's what, and turns out, i forgot to plug the fan in the last time I was in there. Odd that it took 6 months for it to start causing issues, but whatever. Plug the fan back in, blow the fans out quick while it's open, put it back together, and it turns on for a couple seconds and then quits.
Hmm. So I do the SMU reset jig a couple times, nada. Do the SMU reset while holding the power button. Nada. Apple cleverly hid the leds on the board under a black piece of plastic. I can't find anything on the led's inside the isight model, but if they are the same as the older generation, green led 1 is on indicating power to the board. Green led 2 comes on after pushing the power button, but goes out after a few seconds, and a red led 4 comes on, and stays on. This reads as the power supply being unable to supply sufficient power to the machine, if going by previous model's guidance. At no point does the machine reach the chime stage. Nothing is attached to any ports, no mouse, no keyboard, no nothing.
Power supply, or logic board?
Yes, the machine was out of warranty whem I put the drive in, so there was no warranty to void.
No I don't have apple care. This is the first mac to puke on me, and I've had lots over the years.
Yeah I probably cooked something without the HD fan running, stuff happens, but what got cooked?

What can get cooked is the motherboard - but the power supply could also be faulty. Your best option is to take it in and have it looked at, if you feel competent enough to replace those components (we won't mention the debacle with the drive ;-)) you can order them online and DIY, otherwise, let the Apple service provider do it.
Let us know how you make out,

what do i do..my imac will not power up...it comes on, and goes back off....HELP

Wouldn't that be like, telling you that your car need a new engine and transmission over the phone.
Take it to your local Apple Store or AASP and have them diagnose the problem.
Click on the Service section, at > Apple - Find Locations

My 24" iMac just died and will not power-up.  What can I do?

Bring it into an Apple Store for a free diagnosis and quote for cost of repair/replacement of parts.
If the costs are $500 or over, consider using the money toward a new or "newer" (used) Mac.

Out of warranty:  Please detail ALL you have done so far in the way of troubleshooting?   Need this info to avoid the been there done that scenarios.

  • IMac will not power up!  Help!

I have an iMac that for some reason will not power up, at all.
The specs are: 800 MHz, iMac G4, 512 MB.
It stopped detecting the available WiFi network in my home regardless of where I located it. So I rest PRAM, and no change. I reset NVRAM and all in open firmware, no change. Pulled the RAM and AirPort card and reseated; no change.
So I reset the PMU (pushed it quickly and only once) and now it will not start up at all. No fan. No lights. Nothing.
I don't have any extra plugged into the iMac now. I pulled the RAM and Airport card and have tried booting with and without just the keyboard plugged in.
I've unplugged it and let it set for over 24 hours and still nothing. I have noticed that when I plug it in, the overhead incandescent bench light on the same circuit dims or flickers ever so slightly for a very brief moment.
So I'm leaning towards one of the following:
    1. PMU crash meaning I need to replace the logic board
    2. Fried logic board which is likely why the Airport card stopped responding (which, by the way, was somewhat intermitant at first)
    3. PMU crash that can somehow miraculously be reset saving me from having to get a replacement logic board
    4. Bad battery (haven't checked this yet as it seems the machine would show some sign of life if it had a bad battery. This thing is lifeless).

    Hello slee:
You have, IMHO, analyzed the problem. I think it is time to take the computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified repair shop for diagnosis. I do not think you want to begin replacing things that may be OK.

  • My brand new iMac will not power up after an update restart, any suggestions?

Any suggestions on why my IMac will not power up after it done a restart?

Try an SMC reset and PRAM reset: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
    If that doesn't help:
See if it will start in Safe Boot: restart holding down the Shift key until you see a grey progress bar, type your admin password when prompted, let it continue to (hopefully) boot. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If that didn't help, try booting into the Recovery HD: restart holding down Command+r and choose Disk Utility from the four choices when they appear on screen. Once DU has launched select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If anything gets changed click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass, restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you still have problems, give AppleCare a call.

I tried to change the memory and now my Imac will not power on. and there are no beeps. what did I do wrong?

Don't know.  Could be any number of reasons.  Re-read the how to install RAM manual again for your model iMac.  Double & triple check to make sure you purchased the right RAM chips.   Make sure they are seated properly.  If you didn't hear a snap when seated, the RAM is not properly seated.

My iMac will not power on

Hi I have some weird problem related to this and unfortunately either or apple or APS able to solve.
I have picked a 27 iMac late 2012 model 2 montsh back and a APC Back up UPS 700.
Whenevr I turn on the Main power> Turn on APC> Turn on iMac, the iMac doesn't turn on. I will have to unplug it and plug it back it works. It happens only when I start the UPS for the first time in the day. After that how many ever times I remove my iMac plug and plug it back to APC, it turns on.
Initially I thought, it is the problem with the UPS and contacted APC where they replaced with a new UPS and its the same problem.
Unfortunately, Apple is not able to tell that its the problem with the Apple iMac as it works fine when directly powered without using APC.
So, the problem lies working with APC and iMac together.
Could someone please help. The last option I have is to carry the UPS to a Apple store and see if it works fine with any other iMac.
Also to mention, I did try SMC reset adn PRAM reset.

  • Imac i5 will not power on

My intel based iMac i5 will not power on today.
    It worked fine last night.
I tried to turn it on and I got the chime but nothing else. No sounds or display.
I attempted to reset smc with no resolve.
At one point after resetting I did get the fan to come on. The fan would run continually until hitting power botton.
Now I hit power button and Nothing.
I have had this unit since last December with no issues.
    Any Help would be appreciated.

You could try a PRAM reset:
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If that doesn't help, try a 'safe boot' - restart holding down the shift key until you see the progress bar. If it boots, restart normally from the Apple menu.

  • My iMac will not power up

My iMac will not power up. It is a late 2008 21.5 inch. Any suggestions, tricks, soothsaying, or voodoo that one can apply here would be a great help. Thanks.

If it doesn't have any video and doesn't make any sounds take your 20" (not 21.5") 2008 iMac in for repair, it has suffered a hardware failure. When you say it will not power up please be more descriptive, what exactly happens when you hit the power button and what troubleshooting have you tried?

  • Imac crashed and will not boot up

So my iMac crashed and will not boot. The power will come on and when it switches to the boot sequence it powers off.  I bought Black Tie protection at Best Buy but when I took it to them they shipped it to Apple. The problem was never fixed. Apple said it was a software issue to reload the OS. Well i did that and not even a day went by and it is doing the same thing. Any suggestions would be helpful...

I agree with BGreg that you should run Apple Hardware Test , however run it in Extended Mode. If no errors turn up run it several times. It's a lengthy test so be patient. Also here is what Apple says about your symptoms in Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup.
I hope you have been backing up your system, if not then if you can boot into Safe Mode as suggested you should immediately backup using either a clone or Time Machine. That should be the #1 priority to preserve your data.
