IMac issues

Any ideas where I should go from this as it's been unanswered now for over a month? Sent via post, email and now forum.
Any advice on what I should do would be appreciated. Won't go to indepth as the letter says it all.
Noted also that my last post was deleted for some reason?
Thanks
Simon
Dear Sir/Madam,
I'm writing a letter of complaint, due to frustration, upset and general let down of two of your products.
In January 2008 I bought a 24" iMac G5 with iSight with the intention of using for university work. Since purchasing it I found that the Mac OS and software on it is so good that I replaced all of my Windows based devices with Apple products, this includes a Macbook, G5, time capsule and iPhone. The ease of use of your products, coupled with their quality and style has led me to recommend them to friends and colleagues, many of whom have gone on to purchase various devices.
Unfortunately for all the praise I put upon Apple and its products I have had a rather unpleasant experience with some of the items I own and the service that I have received. I am not one to complain lightly and generally willing to accept that all products have their issues and occasional problems but after repeated let downs I felt compelled to write this letter.
The iMac developed a Graphics card issue causing the screen and as a consequence the iMac to become unusable and as such I took it into the Bluewater Apple store to have it repaired under the APP I took out. I took my iMac fully boxed into the store as I didn't want it to become damaged on route. I understand your staff must see and handle these things everyday but the Genius I saw happily threw the polystyrene mould onto the floor and kicked it aside snapping it in the process, before pulling my iMac out and practically dropping it onto the desk.
Admittedly they are heavy but this was carelessness and not the inability to hold it securely. Surely your staff are trained in handling these products?
It was noted that something was wrong and the iMac was taken in for repair and could be picked up a week later. At the same time I had my Macbook looked at due to an issue with the battery and charger cable. This was rectified at that time.
Unfortunately a few days later my Macbook developed a new issue as well causing it to hang on boot up. I decided to have this booked in for the same time as I was due to pick up my iMac.
I went back a few days later to collect the iMac and have my Macbook looked at. After waiting for almost an hour they pronounced the hard drive in the Macbook dead. This meant another few days later I'd have to come back to the store, which is roughly 50 miles from my home.
Following this I was presented with my iMac with no box. As it was taken to the store in its box I was expecting to get it back in the same state I had left it in. When I mentioned this to the staff they gave little if any concern about this and I had to argue the point to get my box back. Although a box may not seem that important it was the way this was handed that surprised me the most. Once the box was found I was asked if I’d like a hand taking my product out to the car. This was a kind gesture but I politely declined as the car was only a few feet away. I was then told that he would take the product for me, as if I dropped it, it wouldn’t be covered by the warranty and I would be liable. I again polity declined but by which time he had picked up the product and was walking towards the exit. When we arrived outside announced that he needed to get out for a cigarette, using this as an excuse to smoke seems wholly inappropriate and very unprofessional.
When I got home I noticed that the remote for the iMac was missing, this was inside the box when it was given to the Apple store... Already quite irritated I set up the iMac and started it up, only to find that there were two dead pixels on the screen! Now these were defiantly not there before hand. On top of this my iMac was deadly silent before being repaired and now had a high pitched whistle emanating from it.
My girlfriend, father, brother and work friends all said they would have got extremely angry at this point and almost certainly got in touch with someone about the whole situation. With hindsight I tend to agree with them and wish I had done something about it before now however at the time I was just happy to have my computer back and be able to work on it again.
So what's sparked this letter? Around 4 days ago my iMac developed exactly the same issue with the graphics card and is unable to boot again. This is roughly 5 months after getting a 'new' one fitted and I now have less than 4 months warranty left, I am left wondering if this will end up happening again when the warranty expires?
That thought made me anxious but what topped it is my Macbook battery has died again as well. Although the Macbook is of less worry to me as I can still use it it's still a burden to me and something of massive frustration.
Just to put things into context I'm writing a list of products I have from apple.
My current apple product list:
iMac,
Macbook Black,
Mac Mini,
Mac Pro G5,
Time Capsule,
iPhone x 3 (in the household),
iPod x 2 (in the household),
iPod shuffle x 2 (in the household),
iPod Nano
Apple Software list:
Remote Desktop,
Logic Studio,
iLife,
Leopard
MobileMe
Journeys to Apple store to sort out problems:
1 x for Macbook battery
2 x for Macbook hard-drive (and another occasion which has not been talked about in this
letter)
2 x for iMac Graphics card
Totalling over 250 miles for Mac related issues.
As stated before I take pride in my machines and don't in anyway shape of form abuse them. They are put to sleep or shut down when not used and I even follow guides on your website to keep them in top shape. So I am positive it's not user error.
This can only lead me to think that there is a problem with these products, as your company has such a good reputation it suggests that I have been unlucky and just got a couple of machines with unusual faults. However this doesn’t really make the issues I have had or the treatment I have received any easier to take.
My confidence in Apple has been somewhat dented as a result of these unfortunate problems and I would like to know what you intend to do to rectify the problems I have had? I am not trying to get something for nothing; all I am hoping for is that you can provide me with a solution that will allow me to gain the enjoyment and pleasure from your products I so desperately crave.
I look forward to your reply
Simon Longson

If you wish to be pointed to the correct folks to assist, then post that, no more, no less.
There are two warranty options, the original 1 year warranty and the Apple Care extension to three years. BTW if you have not bought the extension, you have until the day before the one year warranty expires to buy and activate it. It often pays for itself with one repair.
Either directly, face to face with the store staff, or with an Apple Care first line agent on the phone, relay the information of the issues you are having with the Mac and rehearse the remedies that have been applied to the situation up to this point. If the issue is a repeat, or if there are multiple issues, directly ask for the machine to be replaced. From what folks report here, Apple's general policy appears to be to repair twice, then replace. There are often acceptions.
If you feel that the person to whom you are speaking is uncaring with your issue, request to escalate the issue to the next level; store management or, on the phone, a product specialist.
On the phone, ultimately, there are also Customer Relations agents who are authorized to pretty much make the customer happy. Hopefully you do not need to go to that level.
Always remain firm and specific in your requests, but non-argumentative. No threats, especially regarding lawyers. Apple pretty much will not deal with you at all after that kind of statement, other than perfunctory adherence to the warranty, which is always repair or replace on their terms.

  • How come most people think it's an isolated Alu iMac issues?

My old PC couldn't do what I needed it to do anymore so I desperately needed a new computer for my project. I was going to go Apple's London store and move a new Alu iMac home immediately, but before I did that I came to this forum ... And that's how thing started to become very complicated.
At first, I was shocked by the number of people complaining about this 'new iMac issues' - the faulty display and the freezing problem ... mostly, the freezing issue. Quite a few people believed it was caused by the 1.1 update and the ATI card. After a few days of my intense reading on this iMac forum, Apple issued a statement acknowledging the freezing issue.
I knew it would only be sensible if I waited until Apple solve the problem. The thing is: I just cannot afford to wait - I have to finish my project.
I stared looking at other options: Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mini .... and ... what I have found on this Apple forum, based on what other Mac owner's posts, none of these models is clear of the same problem - unexpected, continuios freezing problem!
Based on what I have read so far, the freezing problem is not exclusive of the
1: new Alu iMAc - some white iMAc, MacPro, MBP, Mini owners have reported the same issue.
2: Macs with ATI graphic card.
3: Macs have been updated to OS X 1.1
    4: Macs have games installed
It's a large, wide spread issue than some people would believe, isn't it? To be honest, I have started looking at Dell desk top these two days ... but I just cannot imagine to spend any money for another PC - it should be my last solution.
I desperately needed an Mac for my project - it's a very important one. I am depressed by the situation I am facing now and don't really know what to do. Can anyone kindly offer me some advice?
Some of you might say: get a grip - it's only a computer ... and the freezing issue is not that serious ...
However, if you rely on the computer to get your work done, would you really go ahead and buy an iMac regardless what is going on. Otherwise, what else can I do? If I buy an iMac and only work under bootcam with Windows until Apple fix the freezing problem - will it be a solution?
If you were me, what would you do?
    I will appreciate any input!

    David,
I posted the same thing and was taken to task by some posters for stating it also. The truth is that gamers were the first to report this issue and did so in far larger numbers than other users. In fact, those who are or were reporting issues with Aperture or iTunes or other applications really didn't start posting in significant numbers about the issue until a few days after it surfaced.
I think many people didn't get a chance to read some of the first posts on the subject as many of them were removed, for cause, and some of them are a few pages back now and forgotten.
I too have had the problem but in my case I was able to solve it by removing the game that was causing it all the time, reformatting the drive, reinstalling, and then updating. That was a week ago and I have not had any freezes since, but I have had video artifacts a couple of times. When it does that I just save my work and restart. I have even managed to get through some iPhoto sessions without issue.
    *To the Original poster:*
No one can tell you what you should or should not do but if you want a Mac, buy one. This problem is not as widespread as some would have you believe. If you base your opinion on what you read here you would come to the conclusion that everyone's iMac is sick, but that is not true. In my case of the three Intel iMacs that I have, only my 24" has the problem, the other two are just fine.
Even if 30% of them were/are bad, which is an absurdly high figure, you would still have a 70% chance of getting one with no issues!!
I also trust that Apple will find and solve the problem. After dealing with them for 20+ years that is what I have come to expect based on my past experiences with them.

  • 24" iMac issues...Please advise!

I have had a 24" iMac for about a month now. During that time, I have been experiencing some strange behaviour with the machine.
Firstly, it does suffer from the much discussed "hum" from the display, but I can deal with that. What has been much more irritating to me is that it sometimes spins up a fan to very high RPM for no apparent reason. The noise seems to originate from just behind the left side of the screen, which makes me believe it is related to the video card or hard drive.
What is irritating about this is that the fan typically spins up when waking from sleep, but doesn't turn back off, whether you are using the computer or just letting it sit idle. The fan still spins at the same speed no matter what you do or don't do. The fan stops spinning if you turn off the computer, but it resumes again on startup. However, if the computer is put to sleep for an extended period of time, it may or may not happen at waking. This is strange, because on the occassions that it doesn't run, I can do things as intensive as video work and gaming and it will never come on, nor will it display any artifacts on the screen to indicate overheating. Clearly, it is not a normal spin up that is happening. It is loud enough to lay down some serious noise through the built in microphone.
I'm not sure if it is related or not, but sometimes the computer will not sleep...putting the monitor to sleep, but never spinning down the hard drive. I have also put it to sleep before, only to find it had awakened on it's own.
Is this a logic board issue, or a need for a PRAM reset or some other function. Will a 10.4.8 upgrade help with this? I live a looonnnngggg way from an Apple store and really don't want to make a bunch of trips that aren't really necessary.

You are experiencing what are known as "dead pixels". Unfortunately, the LCD manufacturing process is less than perfect, and a certain number of "stuck" or "dead" pixels is considered acceptable. Sometimes, if there are enough of these pixels, Apple will replace your display. I understand that there must be over 8, and they must be obtrusive.
Take heart, though, as there are some things you can attempt to do on your own to fix the problem. Try this link for steps on how to get your stuck pixels back: http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-a-Stuck-Pixel-on-an-LCD-Monitor

  • External Hard Drive and iMac issues

When I plug in my external hard drive to my macbook pro, it works great. But when I plug it into my new iMac, it shows up as read only? What can I do to rectify the situation without reformatting the hard drive?

    Hi jsncrwfrd182,
If you are having an issue with being unable to access an external hard drive because of permissions, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • IMac issues: Overheating, Software Crashing, Screen Burn

    To whomever is helpful,
My 24" iMac, early 2008 model has been experiencing problems that have gotten progressively worse over the past three months. The iMac began to heat up more than usual, and it's gotten hotter progressively over that course. The iMac is almost unusable after thirty minutes unless the screen brightness is turned down as low as possible. Software crashes, everything from advanced programs such as the Adobe suite, and the Chrome web browser which is not supposed to tax the memory very much, if at all. I have 4 gigs of RAM installed, and I believe the issue is heat related. As a sidenote, if the iMac gets hot enough, there is screen burn when moving application windows, and they disappear only after 10 minutes in sleep mode.
In my mind, all of this is abnormal, and earlier today I tok my iMac to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, and the Genius didn't spend five minutes diagnosing my problems likely because there was a long line of people waiting. All he told me was to go home and run Activity Monitor and Disk Utility to see if there's a problem, and also to reinstall the operating system and the applications that crash. I've tried that, and as expected it didn't do anything, and I'm wondering if anyone has insight that could be of use, and if maybe I should send my iMac to AppleCare for them to look at it. Any help would be greatly appreciated appreciated.
    Regards,
    -Chad

Chad, very sorry to hear of your problems.
If your Mac is still under warranty (sounds like it might be) I'd suggest the following.
Call Apple, and politely request they send a warranty tech to your location to address the issue.
Ask that the tech come prepared to replace your Mac if they are unable to fix it.
Although I am not an expert, this doesn't sound like a problem you could have caused. If you didn't break it, you shouldn't have to be involved in fixing it. You paid good money for a product, and you deserve to have it.
Again, I'm assuming you're still under warranty.
If you decide to try this, I hope you'll report how it works out for you, so we can learn from your experience. Thanks, and good luck!

  • 24" iMac Issues- Hangs Up Consistently

I have an early 2008 24". This thing has served me flawlessly until I first installed Mountain Lion. It's a 3.2Ghz, 4GB RAM, with now, a 120 GB SSD, with 100 GB free at this time. My only issue ever, was that my HDD failed a couple of years ago. Once I installed ML, I started having the expected issues with program compatibility and what not.
Disk Utility is returning no errors. Activity monitor is almost completely idle, meaning that no program is taking any more than 1/10% or so. I had no issues with this thing until I decided to upgrade to ML since they started phasing out the programs for Snow Leopard. The first time I installed ML, I noticed it was slower. I've switched back and fourth to SL at least three times, but I get the exact same behavior. I've also changed from HDD to SSD a few months ago, thinking that would help, but yeilded no performance increase.
I run a constant 5Mb/s or so network speed and have tried various networks, so the connection isn't the issue. The main issue seems to be when I click a different web page, or click to work within an application: I get the beachball for 15, 30 or 45 seconds. Not every time, but a lot of the time. It's the same behavior no matter, SL or ML. Shortly after wiping the system, with no connection to my other drives, it will start this. It's as though Apple has preordained this behavior. Ever since the inception of ML, I have had nothing but problems. Do I need to buy the latest model or something? If I had another $3k to spend, I'd experiment, but my machine has been flawless, so I expect it's a "compatibility" issue. Please help me.
    -Jason Blackwell

Mountain Lion is fully compatible with 2008 iMacs, I suspect either corrupt download that resulted in a corrupt install or a hardware fault. However you may have a hardware fault that may need to be professionally diagnosed. To see if there is a hardware issue run Apple Hardware Test in Extended mode at least 3x back to back. AHT isn't 100% reliable but it finds errors they are correct, if it doesn't that only means you need to take it into an Apple Store or AASP to be profesionally diagnosed.
    Good luck.

  • Importing FCE to FCP and G5 iMac to Duo Core iMac issues

I mainly film & edit weddings, but work on a number of other things as well. Someone told me to try hitting escape when I get the error message window, which worked good enough on a few of the projects, but not on most. Have been using FCP 5.1.4 for about a year now and opened plenty of my old FCE 3.0 files without trouble. Switched from an iMac G5 without a Duo Core to a new one (iMac 7.1) with a Duo core in Jan, and now having all kinds of problems opening old FCE and sometimes even FCP projects started before I got the Duo Core.
There's a project I created abt 8 mos ago in FCP 5.1.4 I'm trying to open and touch up a bit in the same version of FCP, but the cursor goes into a multi-color spin and essentially freezes up. I've also tried to open the capture scratch files from this project in a new Final Cut project, but they won't open and I get this message: "File error: 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown." Finally, try to open the capture scratch files in Quicktime, but get this message: "an invalid public atom movie was found in the movie". This makes me wonder if the captured video files might have gotten corrupted...any idea how or what to do now?
Looks like my current system has an ATI Radeon HD2600 card. I'm not super technical when it comes to most of this. Any ideas why it won't open or what I can do to get it to work around these issues? Having to re-load footage and start completely over on these sure would be a huge pain. Please say NO
Any thoughts are appreciated and welcomed.

  • TS2570 Brand new iMac issues?

And if you have this issue with a brand new (one week old) iMac? Do you also have to do al these things trying to fix it? Or does Apple take back the 'old' iMac and immediately changes this for a new one?

You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return a Mac w/no questions asked.

  • 3 weird ALU iMac issues..

My ALU 20 inch iMac has 2 or 3 weird problems which I'd appreciate feedback on...
    1. When I run Maintenance or Onyx they both said my start up has a problem and I need to install the original start up disk and have it repaired. I did so, it checked and said there were NO start up issues.
    2. After shutting down for 3 days as I was away on holiday, I came back, started her up and there was the sound of the computer's drive being on but no start up process and nothing on the screen. I turned off for a while, did again, and on the third attempt it started up as normal.
    3. Most weird of all, after downloading and watching a TV episode from iTunes, my dock disappeared. I put it to sleep and this morning it is still the same. I can only access Mail and Safari through the 'recent item's drop down menu.
Are these things connected? Why on earth does Onyx say I have a problem when the disk says I don't, and where might my dock be....?

Hello and thanks for your reply/
The Maintenance version is 1.2.0 and was just downloaded.
It says "the volume needs to be repaired. To repair your start up disk, start up from your OSX DVD..."
No more specific than that I'm afraid = start up volume?
    Thanks.

  • IMac issues with displaying Internet images

Recently my iMac hasn't been displaying some images on the Internet correctly. For example the header of bbc.co.uk/news looks like a TV searching for a scrambled signal, but the rest of the images on the page are fine. There are a few other sites that I'm experiencing the same issue. When I try to save those images, they download with the same scrambled effect. I'm not sure what caused it to do this, but it also started on my Macbook Pro a few days after. It's not the browser because the same thing happens on Chrome, Safari and Firefox. I've tried resetting the cache and PRAM but to no success. Both computers are running OS X 10.9.
I'm not sure how to attach a file on this forum, but here is an imgur link to a screen shot of the problem http://imgur.com/7hGFSqE.
If anyone has seen something like this, please let me know.
    Regards,

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Sandy Bridge processors in new iMacs issues.

    Hello
Does anyone know if any of the faulty Sandy Bridge processors which were produced at the start of the year made it into this iMac refresh? Or did Apple wait until the updated versions were produced before using them in their macs? By updated versions I mean the completely non faulty new versions of the chips not the ones that went back to intel and they just patched them up before sending them back out to vendors.
I am in the market for a 27" i7 iMac upgrade but this is the only issue stopping me from buying one straight away. I was thinking of leaving it a few weeks for the initial stock which may contain these faulty chips to sell through then hopefully get an iMac from a newer batch.

I'm sure it's pretty safe to say there are no issues with the current crop of Sandy Bridge procs in the 2011 refresh. Apple would make sure they'd cleared up any problems before rolling out the new iMacs, and If I recall correctly, Intel resumed shipping the corrected chips back in mid February. You should be fine.

  • IMac issues since upgrade

I used to run my iMac using 10.6.3 fine, never had any issues. Then one day my brother came over with a gift of 10.8. Well since Installing that right off the bat I had issues with mail, mainly with an e-mail account from my work. I just decided to not use mail any more since I did most of my e-mail with my iphone any way. After that we updated to 10.8.2, and that's where it seems like all **** broke loose. I constantly get the spinning beach ball all the time. and programs were freezing up. I could click different programs and move the cursor, but the beach ball wouldn't go away and I would have to force restart. I have run disk utility multiple times, both while logged in, and by holding down command r on boot up. I have also run fsck, and reset PRAM. After all of this I decided to wipe the computer and do it over again, unfortunally losing quite a bit since it would freeze every time I tried to use timecapsule to back up.
So I have reinstalled 10.6.3, which went smooth. I updated again to 10.8 and that was fairly smooth. I did find music on my external drive that was corrupt, so I have deleted that thinking that might be causing some issues. Well 2 games I like to play are Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2. Both of these games kept saying that for best performance, to upgrade to 10.8.2, and Starcraft 2 seemed to be locking up a lot on login and when loading a game. So I decided to attempt 10.8.2 again. Most everything had been going smooth although I noticed it didn't fix Starcraft 2 at all, so I might just try and reinstall that, but on top of that, the beachball seems to be coming back again and it takes forever to login to the computer and takes longer to boot up than it used to.
Should I again, wipe the computer and try staying with 10.8? or does this sound like some kind of issue that may be resolved some other way? (without having to buy a new computer as my wife keeps saying we should, as she's conviced the computers dying).
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I only had one thing to disconnect, which was my external drive. I did notice that the computer boots up a bit faster, but it still has the same issues once up and running.
I was thinking this morning tho and think I might have figured out my issue.
Does anyone know if dust/powders getting inside the computer could cause this? I ask this because around the same time we started to have issues was when we used a powder substance in the house on the rugs to deal with fleas, and I know it does kick up a bit when moving around and we were treating the house for a while. Also if this is the cause, is there a safe way to clean out an iMac? Is it easy to open and clean?
Either way I am looking at probably upgrading to a new iMac with tax money, but I would probably be cleaning this one up, wiping it and putting factory settings on it to give my parents to replace the eMac I gave them years ago when I got this iMac. Also on that note, any tips or advice on whether I should get a regular ATA drive or fusion? That's the only thing I'm not sure about yet.
Hoping the dust is my issue and can resolve it this weekend if there's a way to open it up and clean it.

  • Late 2009 iMac  Issues (Wits' End)

Hello I would appreciate any help or direction I can get with the issue that I am having.  Please see the bullet points below.
    1)     Intial hard drive crashed about a year ago.  I replaced with a non Apple hard drive.  (Turns out this intial drive was recalled but since I removed it I am not covered)
    2)     Recently the computer started acting up with periodic reboots.
    3)     Did a fresh install of Mountain Lion but periodic crashes persisted.
    4)     Things had settled down for about a month when all of a sudden we could not login to a user from the user select screen (pinwheel of death)
    5)     Disk utility from recovery partion ran fine repairing permissions and verifying the disk (Still recieving pinwheel of death)
    6)     After several tries and reboots later Disk utility was rebooting from the recovery partion for no reason.
    7)     Decided to take to Apple and they determined that I had a bad hard drive only because the hard drive temperture sensor was reporting an error (Thirdy pary hard drive installed)
    8)     They advised that they could not repair the iMac due to use of a third party (me) opening the iMac and installing the hard drive.
    9)     I do not believe the hard drive was the issue.  Once I got the imac home form Apple I decided to run a test with an install disk and an external drive.
    10)   The computer shutsdown shortly after selecting the option key to even boot to the install disk.   (This by the way is worse than when I took it to Apple)
    11)   The computer now shuts down shortly after boot with not interupt or break possible.
Can someone point me to what I need to do next?  How can  the hard drive be the issue if I can't even boot to the install disk?  Any one have any good resources or can point me to good support outside of Apple?

    Don't have an idea from 2 - 11, but a comment on #1:
I read in the email that I received that they would reimburse me if I had replaced the hard drive in question previously, having to send proof. Do not know about the entire process, but have read here of several people who did get reimbursed. So, you may want to keep that in mind and follow up on it with Apple once you have your current problem addressed.
As for your problems, it almost sounds as though you have a totally hosed system causing the problems (rather than a hardware issue). Do you have a viable and clean bootable clone on an external drive? But, this is not my expertise, so I'll leave it to others.

  • Frequent and chronic Slowness on Late 2009 21.5" iMac, Issues with Display, Fan, and Booting

    Hello,
Sorry for the repost, but I realized after the edit period had passed that I left out a lot of information from my original post, and that I misrepresented my problem in the question heading. Because of this, I am posting again with the updated information.
I  am using a 21.5" iMac from Late 2009 with OSX Mavericks 10.9.2.  Recently, I have been experiencing several signs of failure/aging during  use:
    Frequent:
Mail.app slow opening, closing; messages opened in large batches do not get marked as read
Terminal.app experiences noticeable lag when opening (it sometimes takes between 5 and 20 seconds between launching the application and getting an active prompt)
Processes lag or become unresponsive, even when not many applications are running
Browswers frequently become unresponsive, pinwheel, or lag considerably, frequently requiring a force-quit.
    Mouse Pinwheels Frequently
    Intermittent
Computer  generates loudly audible fan noises, persists even when computer is  briefly powered off during a reboot; does not always stop after  rebooting
    Finder often becomes unresponsive
    Rare (one time only)
Machine  powered on in "Safe Boot" mode for no apparant reason; red text reading  "Safe Boot" in menu bar of login screen; background picture slideshow  mode became very glitchy, phased and flashed in horizontal grey bars  before loading next background image
    Chronic (Consistently Happens)
Machine  will not boot if plugged into normal powerpoint after being unplugged  from that power-point; cable must be plugged into a different A/C power  outlet for machine to boot, at which point it can be switched off again,  moved back to the original dedicated outlet, and booted again. This has  never failed to happen, and is mind-boggling.
I followed some instructions from a similar thread,  but I felt that my experiences were sufficiently different that I  couldn't troubleshoot from someone else's solution. I would greatly  appreciate any technical advice and help that the community can offer.

This indicates that your Bootcamp partition is still FAT, which also indicates that the Windows Installer has not been used to reformat it to NTFS yet, as required by Windows Installer. No Windows installation exists yet.

The NVRAM in the Mac (as set by Bootcamp Assistant) is telling it to boot from the built-in Optical drive. Is it fully functional and has Windows Installer media in it or broken? Since no drivers have been loaded, the Keyboard/Mouse which are BT/USB, will not function.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) - Technical Specifications, it has a built-in Optical drive...
    Optical drive
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
3: If I don't hold down option key and it is without my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". My keyboard is, again, unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
No bootable media in Optical drive, hence this error.

  • B/W G3 Tower & G4 iMac Issue

    Hello All,
I have a bit of a problem with a G3 tower that was donated to my shop the other day (I am the manager of a charity shop in London).
The tower will switch on and the hard drive whirrs but the monitor comes up with the ?/Mac flashing folder (which I assume means it can't boot from the HDD).
I know next to nothing about computers (which is why I have a Mac) but I've been given the task of bringing this beastie back to life as everyone else at work is a confirmed Windows user.
Now, because I have a G4 iMac at home I've taken the base unit of the G3 back to my house along with an Ethernet Crossover Cable.
My idea was to look into the mind of the G3 through my G4 iMac (which has an integrated monitor). I don't have any other monitors at home so I'm not quite sure what to do next.
Both Machines are on and I'm wondering how (or even if) I can view the G3 using the monitor or my G4.
Niävely I assumed that just plugging them together would make something magical happen. I guess even Apple haven't managed to cater for my complete lack of knowledge.
    Could anyone offer any advice?
I have a copy of OS 8 and OS 9 in my bag and I'm trying to install one of them on the G3.
    All help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt.

"(I am the manager of a charity shop in London)."
" I don't have any other monitors at home so I'm not quite sure what to do next.
See if someone will donate a monitor. 17" monitors are being sold here for $1.oo. If it is a PC monitor, you can find adapters.
"My idea was to look into the mind of the G3 through my G4 iMac (which has an integrated monitor)."
That would require much more work than you want to tackle.
"The tower will switch on and the hard drive whirrs but the monitor comes up with the ?/Mac flashing folder (which I assume means it can't boot from the HDD)."
Do you know some one with an install CD? The G3 probably will not boot from the iMac install CD but it is worth a try. If you can find a startup CD, it will let you check and see if the hard drive is OK and just needs a new system folder.
I have a copy of OS 8 and OS 9 in my bag and I'm trying to install one of them on the G3.
Is that a bag of tricks? : )
If you have an external hard drive or a zip drive, that will plug into the back of someone else's older Mac and let you copy a system folder over to an external drive long enough to get you going. I would partition the drive so you can have an emergency back up of your system folder. If the system folder on one partition dies, the Mac will automatically boot from the second partition. It is a Mac. Take advantage of the benefits of auto detecting system folders.
