IMac keeps going to sleep

Hi there.
I bought a second hand Rev. A G5 2 months ago. It has always been noisy - loud fan and a whiny noise. It's a bit annoying but I can live with it.
My major problem is the computer falls asleep by itself. It's unpredictable when it will happen but it does seem worse when it's been turned on for a few hours. It will wake fine once it's gone to sleep but will usually go back to sleep a couple of minutes later. I usually leave it for an hour or so and then it's okay. I have wondered if the noisy fan is linked to this. Is the computer overheating all the time? I tried resetting the SMU but that didn't really work.
Yesterday trying to import into iMovie was near impossible as it would keep sleeping - and the main reason for switching was because I liked the idea of iLife and using it to make DVDs of our old home movies and photos.
I'd like to get this sorted as I love my Mac (my friends say I've become obsessed!) but it's starting to get to me. I've read lots of posts about similar problems but there doesn't seem to be a solution mentioned.
Please help!

Hi
My kid's Rev A falls within these serial numbers but Apple refused to believe there was anything wrong and sent it back to my dealer untouched! The CPU fan constantly sits at a noisy 5600 rpm and the machine goes to sleep frequently during processor-intensive Flash games on the internet.
It's now back with my dealer in the hope he can convince Apple to fix it - although I am convinced the problem only started when I loaded Tiger - it ran quietly on Panther.
Having owned more Macs than I care to remember (and with a beige G3 still running 24/7 as a server in my office) - I really think this is software related rather than hardware. Apple kit has always been pretty reliable!
Hopefully soon I will know one way or another!
PowerBook 17" 1Ghz - too many others to mention!   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

  • Since Yosemite, my iMac keeps going to sleep roughly every 10 minutes watching media

Since upgrading to Yosemite my trusty old iMac (mid 2007) keeps going to sleep roughly every 10 minutes whenever i'm watching media (either through a player or streaming online), regardless of power saving preferences. Everything else is working perfectly as it always has, as far as I can tell.
What am I missing? Are there new settings in Yosemite for this?

In addition to resetting the SMC as Link suggests.
You should also check and/or clean-vacuum the dust out of your iMac's air intakes to make sure that it is cooling properly.

  • My iMac keeps going to sleep

This started happening about a week ago. I have the Energy Saver "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:" set to "Never". Also I keep the computer up 24/7 and it doesn't happen over night. But lately this is happened a few times. Yesterday, my wife called me at work and told me that "the screen was black" I asked if the light was pulsating on the front of the mac, it was. Tonight after work I was ripping a CD. I had dinner and went to the computer and it was asleep. I mentioned it to my wife and she told me it happened twice today.
Is it possible that some key sequence or something is putting it to sleep? Of course, I didn't touch it and it went to sleep. Is this a possible hardware issue? I still have the extended warranty (at home service). Should I have it looked at? Its not a huge deal, but I have it configured to never put it to sleep (I do how the "display" sleep after 2 hours of inactivity though.
Hope someone might have a suggestion.
    Thanks.

If you still have AppleCare or it's covered under onf the G5 iMac extentions, and it turns out to be that... I sure think so.
Try some heavy lifting CPU wise with it, like making a big disk Image or burning one like before.
I don't remember the exact temp figures, but tyours does see high, iirc.
Looks like it is too high...

  • My 24"intel Imac Keeps going to sleep -it is hot to touch in the top left corner of the case -is something about to fail .

My IMac works for 30 mins without a glitch then starts putting itself to sleep every five minutes after that - it is getting hot in the top left hand corner - my guess is that something is on its way out - anyone had a similar issue before .

    Ran AHT - nothing wrong.
Did a full cleanup and verify as well.
    probem persists.
    Fan is always going
might have to go to an applestore..

  • How do I stop iMac from going to sleep automatically after 15minutes of inactivity

How do I stop imac from shutting down automatically after 15minutes of inactivity, trying to play music but the imac keeps going to sleep, tried changing power saving preferences to never shut down, never go to sleep, unticked put the hard disks to sleep, automatically reduce brightness, but still goes to sleep.

    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • Computer keeps going to sleep even though it is set up not to

I recently helped a friend set up his iMac to stream to his home stereo system so things like Pandora could be played throughout the house. The problem we are having is his computer keeps going to sleep and back to the log-in screen. In energy saver, we set the computer and display to never go to sleep. We also un-checked the box that says "put the hard disks to sleep when possible." Even after doing this, the display still goes dark and when the mouse is moved to turn the screen on it is back at the log in screen. This causes pandora to stop playback, which is not good since this is why we set up the streaming in the first place. Why is the computer still going to sleep when we are telling it to never do so?

    HI Ty,
Couldn't hurt to check the hard disk.
Follow these instructions to verify the hard disk for errors:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.5 in the window and click: Restart
If you don’t have a Mac OS X Install disc, restart your computer while holding down the Shift key. As your computer starts up, it performs a disk check similar to the one Disk Utility performs.

  • Monitor keeps going to sleep

    Hello there
I have a HP Pavilion Elite HPE-063uk Desktop PC, product number: VG251AA, serial number {Content Removed}, with Windows 7, my monitor keeps going to sleep and a message saying VGA NO SIGNAL comes up. The only way to awake it is by switching the pc off at the power button (the F2 or "half moon" button should awake it but does not) .
I have checked everything from the "Save Power settings (which is on off)" to Screen Saver (off as well) and done anything what I can find on the HP help and support, troubleshooting problems, testing this and that, even connected a different monitor and restored it to an earlier date, but I cannot solve the problem.
Please can you help. Thank you.

    Hi vitolaterza,
Are you getting the no VGA signal after the computer goes to sleep? If so this is normal.
Turn off all sleep mode options; make sure everything is set to never sleep.
Check the cables on the back, you only need one video cable going to the monitor.  Also go to hp.com and download the latest BIOS and Graphics driver.
Here is a link to download the drivers.
Let me know if this helps.

This is usually a sign that your iPod's headphones are not plugged in all the way.  Make sure that you cannot see any of the silver still showing from the headphone's plug.  You should hear a sort of popping/clicking noise when inserting the headphones letting you know that they have been fully seated.

After doing the 10.9.6 updates last night, my computer keeps going to sleep, even right in the middle of typing, the screen goes black and the lights on the keyboard go off.  I have to hit a key on the keyboard or tap the touchpad to wake it back up, and re-enter my password.  I am also running os x server installed on this laptop and did that update, along with xcode 6

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep
