IMAC Keeps on shutting down

I recently bought an IMac having always had PCs. I adore it now some of the initial teething problems with the HDD have been resolved (back up, clean disk, and rebuilding from scratch with a new copy of Snow Leopard)
Disk Utility now runs clean and the same can be said for ONYX.
But it keeps on crashing (since purchase - every couple of hours, or every few seconds).
This is putting me off the whole transition (not before I bought the NANO, Apple TV and various Software applications). It is out of warranty, and I have tried everything on this site - I would take it into a repair shop if I knew this could be resolved.
I am desperate for advice as I am looking like an idiot every time I try and show family/friends how kewl it is...
Cheers chaps, Soph

  • My 2011 21.5 iMac keeps randomly shutting down

    Hi, all -
I have a mid 2011 refurbished iMac that I bought last September from the Apple store. I love it, but it has a bad habit of suddenly shutting down on me. It started about three weeks after I got it. If I unplug it and plug it back it it always turns back on, although sometimes I have to do it three or four times before it'll turn back on.
Other times I try to turn it on using the power button and nothing happens. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it will turn on.
I took it in to the Apple store a few weeks ago and they ran all the tests on it and found nothing wrong. They did a reinstall of the OS but it's still shutting off for no apparent reason.
There's no pattern to it. Some days it doesn't do it at all and other times it'll do it two or three times in a row, sometimes not even getting past the bootup screen.
I found out the outlet it was plugged into wasn't properly grounded, could that be a cause? It's now plugged into a plug in another room that is grounded via an extension cord, but it's still turned off on me once in a while.
I've looked around and it seems this is a common problem with some iMacs, and some claim no cause has ever been found. I'm wondering if I should bother taking it back to the Apple store when they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Maybe it's something in the power supply to my house?
    Any ideas out there? Thanks!

You can call Apple Customer Service and they should be able to provide you with Lion for your iMac.
    Hope this helps

  • Imac freezing when shutting down

hi, i have this problem for quite a while now. it does not happen all the time but 9 times out of 10 this happens.
when i shut down my imac, the screen goes blue as it should then you get the circle with the black lines going round until it shuts down. thats where it stops, it freezes there and then i have to manually shut it down by pressing the button at the back.
is this a common problem ?
does it cause my imac harm by shutting down this way ?
how can i fix this ?
it didnt do this in the beginning only a few months later it started to
    any help will be appreciated
    thanks

Had had my 500GB HD replaced by apple in my imac24 today, after reinstalling everything and updating I indeed am experiencing the issue of the power button press to sleep COMPLETY locking and freezing the iMac.
I am for now clicking the iMac to sleep but plann to call tomorrow and ask why this has started happening.
Has anyone had a resolve yet??

Verify that when the radio interface is shutdown, the workstations can connect to the server immediately. Also ping from the AP to server and workstations to verify if there is any difference seen to the results seen prior to the radio interface being shut down.

  • My iMac has been shutting down abruptly

My new iMac has been shutting down abruptly the past week and after that I have to wait several minutes to try and see if it will turn on. At first I thought it was overheating, but even after being on less than an hour it shuts down. Does anyone know the reason why this is happenig? Oh, and I was just browsing on the internet, there were no weird programs runnig and the anti virus scan says it's clean.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • IMac 8,1 Shuts Down without warning using FCE

Can somebody give me some advice on this?
My iMac 8,1 shuts down without warning it seems that it is when I am using FCE.  Its as if there is a complete power loss, again no warning, just a black screen.  It always starts up when I push the start button on the back of the machine.
This problem has only started since I moved into a new home.
It is plugged into a surge protector.
I am running the latest update of OS10.6
I have an external HD connected by 800 firewire.  This is where the FCE project is saved along with all of the footage.
I have used this configuration for years without a problem.
The problem does not occur when I am using safari or itunes or mail.
The steps I have taken so far are:
    reset the PRAM
    reset the SMC
tried different outlets in the house in case of a wiring problem in the house
removed and reseated both 1GB RAM chips.
tried different configuartions of my external hard drives
If anybody please has any advice or has experienced the same problem please let me know.  Thanks!

hi, i hv macbook mid 2010 ..it was working fine till few days back but after updating it to mavericks, it keeps on shutting down itself...what to do ? could sm1 help me out ?

The startup disk may need repairing...
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery

  • IMac starting and shuts down after less than one minute...

    Hi !
I hope someone could help me with this problem...
    I think I've tried everything... CMD+Alt+P+R / CMD+R / ... SMC...
I'm a little lost because I can't access to the computer (it shuts down before arriving on the desktop). I've also tried to access just to the hard drive by connecting 2 Mac with Firewire cable... And the same problem appears. The iMac is also shutting down to soon to backup anything...
Is there someone who has experienced the same problem ?
    Thanks !
    Best regards,
    Jonathan.

    Hi Jonathan..
Just to rule out any hardware issues, might be a good time to run the OS X Lion: Use Apple Hardware Test

  • My computer keeps on shutting down randomly

My computer keeps on shutting down randomly. What can I do?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem is (what OS you're using, what Application you're using, recent software installs or updates, a full or screen shot or the text of any error messages) the more assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it.
Under your profile there's no data about the age of your MBA, the OS it's using. This is helpful for us to know because there's a phenomena with machines recently updated to Mavericks that have unusual sleep/wake behavior.  There are other issues particular to certain combinations of machines and software.
Is this happening when the computer is on battery or plugged into the mains (wall outlet)?
How long has it been happening?
