Imac keeps shutting down as soon as I start an application

Really need some help - I have an imac 27inch 2009 Intel - It keeps shutting down as soon as I start to use any application weather it be photoshop or itunes!
I have reset the PRAM, also reset the SMC. Also managed to do a software update which worked fine, although I'm fairly sure software isnt the issue.
I have plugged directly into the wall too.  It seems to stay on if i dont use it, but as soon as I start to do anything - boom, it goes off.  Its driving me crazy.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Just backing up a few files first.
Should I re-install OS?
Yup told you it was a lengthy test. Yes I think you should re-install OS X, before you do what verison of OS X is installed?
BTW please update your profile, you will find it under My Stuff in the upper right of this page. You should at least list what computers you have and what version(s) of OS X is installed on each otherwise we can't get an accurate picture of what is going on.

Could, also, be failing hard drive , power supply or logic board.
You may have to make an appointment and take your iMac in to Apple or Apple authorized repair center for diagnostics and a repair estimate.
If your iMac has a 1 TB internal hard drive, it maybe a Seagate drive and maybe eligible for free replacement under the Apple Seagate 1 TB internal hard drive replacement program.
If you can get your iMac running, you need to backup all of your data ASAP!. Either backup to optical disc, flash drive/s or purchase an external hard drive for backup. You can use a data cloning program such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make an exact copy of your iMac's internal hard drive.
You can check for eligibility for free hard drive replacement by inputting your iMac's serial number here.

Hmm. The problem still may be the RAM - Apple buys the RAM it puts in its machines from third-party vendors (usually Hynix) so it could be a RAM problem.
There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
Run Rember first... call back with results.
    Good luck,

    Gary...
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Power:

A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.

    Try a SMC reset.

  • Imac keeps shutting down Safari and Skype

My computer was working fine* and about two weeks ago any time I opened Safari or Skype it would shut them down as soon as they opened. I have updated both programs and even deinstalled Skype and installed it again, but it keeps happening. I have also carried out the latest software update on the system.
    Thanks
    Luis
    * when I say it has been working fine it is with caveats, as at night very often I have to "Force exit" several programs.

Clearly your iMac has NOT been operating properly, as that is not normal behaviour.
Try a bit of simple maintenance:
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • IMac keeps shutting down during startup loading bar under apple sign

My electricity went out and came back on a minute later. When my computer started up again the font was back to original factory setting. I then restarted my computer and every time it would load up it would shutdown. The computer chimes and then reaches a grey screen with an apple sign. Below it is a loading bar. This bar loads about 10% then goes back down and loads from 0%. A couple minutes later it shuts down after staying at 0%. It keeps doing this routine every time I start the computer. I then did a command s and rebooted the computer to factory reset it. The computer still shuts down and has the old habit of reaching 10% and 0% with the loading bar but now after the loading bar is at 0% it then disappears to the Apple sign and a loading circle. It then shuts down again. This iMac was originally 10.6.8. but i believe i updated it to 10.9.4 and was purchased new around 2008. I also tried to put in a CD with Firmware Restoration CD 1.7. but that didnt work. Can anyone help? or has anyone had similar issues?

  • IMac keeps shutting down while in sleep

I have an iMac G-5 without iSight.......not sure if this started happening after the last sucurity update or installing HP printer software, but now when the computer goes into sleep, it waits awhile and then shuts down entirely, forcing me to turn the computer back on. I uninstalled the HP software, and repaired permissions, but this still keeps happening. Any ideas on what caused this and what I can do to fix it?
iMac G-5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   80 gig hardrive which has about 2 gigs left

    Hi,
I am having a similar problem. I have an iMAC (serial in the range W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx) and in the two weeks, when the computer is put to sleep it turns off. However, I only notice this in the morning after it has been asleep all night. The problem seems to be far more frequent when I put it to sleep as opposed to just letting it time out and go to sleep that way.
I have applied all updates and the only modification to the computer is extra ram (from Other World Computing).
I have seen elsewhere that I can see the computer's reason for shutdown in "system.log". Can anyone tell me how to find that so I can look for the shutdown code there?
    Any ideas?

If anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it.
I have also had issues with the drives in the computer running fast for no reason which in turn causes the fan to blow extremely loud.  The only fix I have found for turning the fan off is to put the computer to sleep, which then makes the drives go back to normal running speeds.  When the fan starts blowing loudly, the drives are running upwards of 4000rpm.  When I put the computer to sleep and wake it up again, the drives are running at the normal speeds of around 1000rpm.  Please help.

I got another panic report last night after I uninstalled the antivirus software the other day.  This is the error message that I got.

  • Imac keeps shutting down

We bought a 2007 intel based Imac in 2008. It was refurbished but seemed to be working just fine. Just after the year warranty ran out in 2009 the computer started randomly shutting itself down and restarting.  We thought it might be a ram issue so we took out the ram we had added and then the computer wouldn't start at all. It seems to be connected somehow with hybernation or sleeping. Whenever I use those modes the computer shuts down more often it will even shut down and restart during hybernation.  We took it to an apple certified repair shop. They ran a diagnostic and replaced the fan but after a few days it started shutting down again. Took it back and the diagnostic didn't turn up anything so they have no idea what might be causing it. The worst thing is that sometimes it will shut down and will not start up again. I have tried unplugging it and sometimes that works but sometimes it will be unplugged for hours and even when I plug it in again it will not restart. I've read a lot of people dealing with this issue but have yet to find an answer that seems to solve the problem. Any ideas?

  • Imac keeps shutting down - is this a power supply issue

Dear all. Help would be much appreciated.
my imac G5 has recently started shutting down by itself - always about 1 minute after starting up... I have seen a few suggestions to reset the PRAM and the power switch - both of which I have done to no avail.
I have hoovered the dust out - still same problem.
Question is - can I be confident that this IS the issue - and order a replacement part?
I would like to install it myself - thus avoiding cost for a repair - and am confident I could do it if I had good instructiuons.
Can anyone help me with my diagnosis or how to fit a new power supply?
Thanks in advance - I am really missing my imac!

You can't be completely sure that it's the power supply, it could be bad caps . Open the machine up and inspect the caps, and also the ones in the power supply unit. If any of them is bulging or leaking, that would be your problem. Look at http://www.jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php for instructions and help.
You can also try to run Apple Hardware test from your install disk and see if it comes up with anything, also, from your install disc try to run Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • IMac keeps shutting down after Time Machine recovery

I have a late 2007 iMac. The hardrive died, so I installed a new SSD. I have a Time Machine backp on a usb drive and aslo a bootable usb drive created a couple of months ago. I installed Maverics on the new SSD (I was running Maverics before as well), and up to this point everything worked fine. Than I started from Recovery Drive and run Recovery from Time Machine. It seemed to be working fine, but after it was done, the iMac shut down. Now every time I start it, it chimes, the gray background with apple appears, and it shuts down immediately.I repeated the whole proces twice, same thing happend. I also tried to do migration instead of recovey, which worked,  but that didn't copy all my files, just the program files.
I have no clue, what to do. Any suggestions?

  • 2011 iMac keeps shutting down at random after Mavericks install.

Installed Mavericks day 1 of the public build on App Store and ever since my Mac will just randomly shut down and not let me power it back up.  Only has happened when browsing the web and after shut down I have removed power cord from iMac and wall, and also tried different outlets and nothing the first two times I was able to get it back up and running after about 20 minutes of it just being off.  Third time it happened I was not so lucky, made an genius appt and they ran diagnostic test and checked power cord and it of course worked fine for them, took it home and booted instantly... Now 24 hours later it just shut off again and no luck getting it going.  Suggestions please or should I schedule another appt and have them send it in?
