IMac keeps shutting down while in sleep

I have an iMac G-5 without iSight.......not sure if this started happening after the last sucurity update or installing HP printer software, but now when the computer goes into sleep, it waits awhile and then shuts down entirely, forcing me to turn the computer back on. I uninstalled the HP software, and repaired permissions, but this still keeps happening. Any ideas on what caused this and what I can do to fix it?
iMac G-5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   80 gig hardrive which has about 2 gigs left

Hi,
I am having a similar problem. I have an iMAC (serial in the range W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx) and in the two weeks, when the computer is put to sleep it turns off. However, I only notice this in the morning after it has been asleep all night. The problem seems to be far more frequent when I put it to sleep as opposed to just letting it time out and go to sleep that way.
I have applied all updates and the only modification to the computer is extra ram (from Other World Computing).
I have seen elsewhere that I can see the computer's reason for shutdown in "system.log". Can anyone tell me how to find that so I can look for the shutdown code there?
Any ideas?

You may have to make an appointment and take your iMac in to Apple or Apple authorized repair center for diagnostics and a repair estimate.
If your iMac has a 1 TB internal hard drive, it maybe a Seagate drive and maybe eligible for free replacement under the Apple Seagate 1 TB internal hard drive replacement program.
If you can get your iMac running, you need to backup all of your data ASAP!. Either backup to optical disc, flash drive/s or purchase an external hard drive for backup. You can use a data cloning program such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make an exact copy of your iMac's internal hard drive.
You can check for eligibility for free hard drive replacement by inputting your iMac's serial number here.

Hmm. The problem still may be the RAM - Apple buys the RAM it puts in its machines from third-party vendors (usually Hynix) so it could be a RAM problem.
There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
Run Rember first... call back with results.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • After installing Mac OS 10.5.8 my 2005 iMac G5 shuts down instead of sleeping

After install of OS 10.5.8 my iMac G5 - 2005 model, no Intel processor - whenever I choose sleep from the Apple menu or the time-out goes to sleep mode the computer shuts down instead of sleeping. Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Try using Disk Utility t repair your disk
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot and repair permissions from your internal drive.

  • IMac G5 Shuts down while running applications

    I installed iLife '06.
Since then my iMac G5 (20") has started shutting down while I'm working.
I'm not sure if the installation is related to the intermittent shut down or if there is another problem.
Someone told me that the fan might be bad. I don't know how to check if the fan is bad. I've heard that some iMac's have noisy fans. I've never heard the fans on my iMac.
I've had my iMac for ten months with no problems.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There are two common reasons for an iMac G5 to shut-down:
    1) a failing power supply (see the article A. Brody mentioned).
    2) Over-heating.
    I'll tackle the second one.
All the recent Macs have a protection mechanism built-in. If the system gets beyond a given temperature, the computer will turn itself off (without warning) to prevent permanent damage.
So, if you notice that the computer is running warm before it shuts-off, then that could be the cause.
But, it is also very likely to be the power supply.
And, operating with a faulty power supply could lead to tons of other problems or damage.
So, I would personally get it into a shop for inspection and repair very fast.
But, if it is under warranty, you should not have any trouble at all getting it fixed (either standard warranty or AppleCare).
If it's warranty has expired, see if it is within the covered systems listed in the article A. Brody gave you.
If so, request it to be inspected and repaired for free under terms of that extension.
Regardless of which problem it is, get it fixed. Neither problem is one that should be ignored.
    Hope this helps.

  • Imac keeps shutting down as soon as I start an application

Really need some help - I have an imac 27inch 2009 Intel - It keeps shutting down as soon as I start to use any application weather it be photoshop or itunes!
I have reset the PRAM, also reset the SMC. Also managed to do a software update which worked fine, although I'm fairly sure software isnt the issue.
I have plugged directly into the wall too.  It seems to stay on if i dont use it, but as soon as I start to do anything - boom, it goes off.  Its driving me crazy.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers.

    Should I re-install OS?
Yup told you it was a lengthy test. Yes I think you should re-install OS X, before you do what verison of OS X is installed?
BTW please update your profile, you will find it under My Stuff in the upper right of this page. You should at least list what computers you have and what version(s) of OS X is installed on each otherwise we can't get an accurate picture of what is going on.

  • IMac keep shutting down after installing OSX lion

    Hi,
I have a mid 2010 27 inch i5 machine and after I had installed OSX Lion last month the machine randomly shut itself down while I'm using it.  At first I thought it was because of a software problem with Final Cut Pro X, since I installed that at the same time and it would shut down while I was using it.  Then it start to shut down while I'm just browsing the net.  Restarting is not a problem but a pain to loose unsafe data when it crashes.
Does anybody else have this problem?  Again the machine was working fine before OSX Lion so I don't think it's a hardware issue.  On average it would shutdown once or twice per usage day sometime a few minutes after turning on the machine, still cool, and sometime after a while, not excessively hot.
Appreciate any help and thank you in advance!

  • G5 iMac sometimes shuts down instead of sleeping

I’ve recently started having a problem with my G5 iMac whereby it shuts down by itself after a while instead of sleeping.
Basically, I start up a task that might take awhile, such as burning photos to a DVD for backups, or updating an Aperture vault, and I go away for a while. I come back later, and sometimes I find that my iMac is sleeping as expected, and other times I find that it has shut itself down. It appears to complete the task before it shuts down. I’ve checked all of the preferences and can’t find any that tell it to shut down.
I’ve also checked the lists of G5 iMac that are affected by the known power supply capacitor issue, but mine is not in the list of affected units
I’ve searched the forums here, and I haven’t seen any other reports of this happening to anybody else.
Any ideas on what is happening?
PS: I’ve also been having occasional issues with unmounting external WD (Western Digital) FW drives lately too. I dismount the drive from the desktop, and the icon disappears as normal. I then power the drive down, but sometimes it will warn me that the drive was improperly removed and that data could be lost. This is odd since the drive icon was no longer on the desktop, so the drive appeared to be dismounted. This has happened with several different WD FW drives. The only thing I’ve noticed is that this doesn’t happen if the external drive appears to go to sleep after dismount. Sometimes, the drive appears to be active (even though the icon has disappeared). Again, any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    MGW wrote:

Not before a normal shutdown. And since I'm never around when it shuts down by itself, I can't say for now.
    MGW wrote:

I think I have around 165 GB or so of free space on the internal drive, so that should be OK. I didn't know about the thermal paste.
    MGW wrote:
If it keeps on happening, you should, after making a full backup, take it in >to Apple and have them take a look.
I'm trying to keep my backups up to date, and I figured that it may need to go in. At some point, I would like to get a new computer, either a new 24" iMac, or a Mac Pro with a 30" monitor. I was hoping to get the new one before I'd need to send this one in for repair, but I might not be able to wait. This iMac is about 3.5 years old, so my Apple Care has expired.
It is odd that it always seems to complete the task at hand before the shutdown. If it was purely due to hardware, it should be more random than that, and not wait for the task to complete. I was starting to wonder if there is some sort of bug in the latest version of Leopard. I didn't have this happen before I upgraded to 10.5.6, but maybe that just a coincidence.
    Thanks again for you help.

If anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it.
I have also had issues with the drives in the computer running fast for no reason which in turn causes the fan to blow extremely loud.  The only fix I have found for turning the fan off is to put the computer to sleep, which then makes the drives go back to normal running speeds.  When the fan starts blowing loudly, the drives are running upwards of 4000rpm.  When I put the computer to sleep and wake it up again, the drives are running at the normal speeds of around 1000rpm.  Please help.

I got another panic report last night after I uninstalled the antivirus software the other day.  This is the error message that I got.
