IMac kernel panic -- rule out hardware and software! any ideas?

Greetings forum
I am totally at a loss on what to do next. Im writing about a mid 2010 27 inch iMac recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Shortly after this the computer started to experience issues of rebooting itself as clicking apps such as safari. So began the troubleshooting process!
First tried clean install -- ie format HD and internet recover install
everything installed fine and then restart issue again as it experience kernel panic
ruling out the Software I was convinced it was a memory hardware issue so I booked appt at genius bar and took it in-- the computer was there for 4 days and the tech said they did extensive testing and could find nothing wrong with the hardware tests!! and they had no advice other than to try a fresh install (again)
I took it home and let it sit for a couple of months as I didnt want to bother with it right away
So I pulled it out again yesterday and decided to do a fresh install after format -- again within 5 min in kernel panicd! This time i think I was searching in safari. BELOW is the crash report
I also decided to load up the diagnostic tool off my iMac disk to test hardware (did the extended test TWICE) and NO TROUBLE FOUND (see photo)

Hmmmm, what all is connected at home that wasn't at the Apple Store?
Does it ever crash when not using Safari or Internet?
Can you test your AC power?

First thing I would try is a full shutdown and restart, which sometimes fixes these kinds of glitches. Next thing is to log in to another account or create one and see if this happens there or not. If it doesn't, don't delete your regular account, this is only for troubleshooting.

  • My iMac kernel panics when backing up via WIFI

Scenario:  my iMac, running 10.8.4 (latest version) backing up via WIFI over Wireless N, kernel panics and crashes on initial backup.
I upgraded my router to go Wireless AC.  I purchased a 4TB WD My Book to go with it.
I was using the standard Verizon ActionTec and an 1TB iomega NAS drive attaced via ethernet to the ActionTec.  Time Machine worked fine with that scenario, however, the 1TB was becoming too small for my needs and I wanted to segregate my network.
Moving to AirPort Extreme and a 4TB MyBook was a great solution.  On page 13 of the AirPort Extreme manual, it indicates this is an acceptable configuration.
On the WIFI backup, the iMac kernel panics and crashes.  Here is the error message:
    panic (cpu 3 caller 0xffffff80272f3458):  "hfs_swap_HFSPlusBTInternalNode: attr inline #21 too big (attrSize=2097202)\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.24.15/bsd/hfs/hfs_endian.c:822
My Apple Support rep told me to ethernet the iMac to the Extreme for the initial backup.  I did that and the backup worked, with out crashing.
Then I added some files to the iMac and did an incremental Time Machine Backup.
Recall that with the ActionTec/iomega, I had no such issues.  So I attached the iomega to the AirPort Extreme and attempted an initial backup.
My iMac kernel paniced and crashed.   It's either the AirPort Extreme or the iMac with the issue.  Or the marriage of the two.
    Any ideas?

If you have the iSight model G5, you cannot self repair the insides/remove the HD (will void your warranty/AppleCare). You will need to take the computer to your local AASP for a professional to remove.
Which "model" & generation G5 iMac do you have?
Need this info so that the knowledgeable users can provide you with the proper troubleshooting solution(s).

  • I am putting together a proposal for a Final Cut Pro Workstation to use with a tapeless HD camera.  Can anyone suggest the best camera (in the 5-10,000 dollar range) ?  What hardware and software should I include in the package?

I am putting together a proposal for a Final Cut Pro Workstation to use with a tapeless HD camera.  Can anyone suggest the best camera (in the 5-10,000 dollar range) ?  What hardware and software should I include in the package?

This is quite an open suggestion, but here are some ideas which might get you started.  There are good HD cameras in your price range from Sony, Panasonic and Canon (and maybe other manufacturers). Tapeless formats vary.  I have only worked with Sony XDCAM which seems pretty good to me.  File sizes for material shot at 35MBS are not too huge and, with the free Sony transfer and conversion programme, are easy to bring into the computer via USB direct from the camera or from a fairly inexpensive converter.  The Sony XDCAM EX3 can produce results well up to broadcast quality.
As to hardware, you'll need a powerful MAC - iMac, Macbook Pro or MacPro with 4GB or more of RAM and a good video card.  Softwarewise, FCPX is quite a bit cheaper than FC Studio 3 and of course it's 64bit and can make better use of multi-core machines than FCP7.    It's also designed to handle HD formats with less hassle than FCP7 and is matched to the latest versions of Motion and Compressor.   But you'd probably be wise to search reviews of FCPX before you make your choice - it has some issues.
A good HD monitor will be essential and, for colour correction etc, you may want to consider a second monitor or HD TV foe editing. ( A MacPro is generally the best machine to connect a second monitor to).
This should give you a good editing system, but there are many other things you could add (Photoshop, professional sound monitors, etc)
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Multiple kernel panics related to java and NTFS

Over the past week, I have experienced at least three separate kernel panics, but only two have had their event recorded by the System Diagnostic Reports.  I was wondering if there are any known issues that could cause kernel panic, such as the ones my system has received.  I have attached the result of the most recent panic below.
Please note that I am running OS X 10.7.4 on a Mac Pro (early 2008) with 14GB RAM.  At the time the panics occurred, CrashPlan was in the process of backing up files (to CrashPlan Central) from my Boot Camp partition, which has Windows XP installed on a NTFS drive.  I mention this, because the fault appears to be related to NTFS and Java.  My understanding is that CrashPlan uses Java, and I don't believe I have many other (if any) applications running on it typically.
I should also mentioned that I may have had Parallels Desktop running at the same time, and had a Windows XP virtual running the CrashPlan client for Windows that was overseeing the backup on my Synology DiskStation NAS.  At this time, I do not believe this is related to the panic, as I have been using Parallels in such a manner for weeks prior, and never received a panic.  Also, while the CrashPlan client in Windows also uses java, due to the VM sandbox, I believe the java is handled internally by Parallels, and doesn't utilize any java thread outside of Parallels.
As I mentioned earlier, I have two recorded panics apparently caused by the same issue, having occurred in the "java" thread and related to "ntfs_attr_record_move_for_attr_list_attribute()".  I noticed that the other report also includes a section at the bottom for "System Profile" with information, such as:
    Model: MacPro3,1, BootROM MP31.006C.B05, 8 processors, Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2.8 GHz, 14 GB, SMC 1.25f4
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770, ATI Radeon HD 5770, PCIe, 1024 MB
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x0000, 0x000000463732353642363145353830304600
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x0000, 0x000000463732353642363145353830304600
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1, 4 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x80AD, 0x485900503132354637324350344E332D5336
    ... ETC ...
Why would some kernel panics include the system profile while others do not?  Are the panic logs "complete" or can they be incomplete due to the kernel locking up before writing the entire log?
I have been using this system since 2008, and gone through numerous OS and Parallels updates over the years.  At this time, I appear to be update-to-date on all software.  I do not recall ever having received a kernel panic in the past, and if I have, it would have been extremely infrequent with the last occurring many years ago.

What might I find by running XP natively?  I won't get kernel panics under XP.  I haven't run it natively in many months.
I thought that Parallels actually uses Paragon NTFS (or at least a variant of it) to read and write to the NTFS drives.  It's possible that I am mistaken, as many years have passed since I last looked at Paragon NTFS.
Is the Paragon driver intended to replace the OS X default NTFS driver or Parallels?  I'm not sure how Parallels will respond to the Paragon driver.
Parallels should be up-to-date.  It reports build 7.0.15094.
Regarding Windows XP, this is the only system I have that is still running XP on Boot Camp.  I rarely use it these days, and wouldn't be now, if I wasn't trying to back it up using CrashPlan.  My plan is upgrade when I have time.  All my other systems have Windows 7 on the Boot Camp drives.
I do have a few VMs that use XP, because I haven't had the chance to replace them with Windows 7 installs, and they are generally used for infrequent development tasks and for running Beyond Compare.  Also, I believe there may have been license issues with the version of Windows 7 that I'm own when used with VMs (meaning they're not allowed) ... but don't quote me on this.
I noticed that Riser B/DIMM 1 and 2 do not report the Manufacturer.  I'm pretty sure the 2GB and 4GB DIMMs are OWC.  The 1GB DIMMs are OEM from Apple.

  • ADF Webcenter Portal Deployment System Hardware and Software configurations

    HI All,
Anyone please help me to sort out this issue.
I need to have the production System requirements of Hardware and Software.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks / Balaji.

    Hi.
Do you need High Avaiability in your environment?
Are you planning work with Spaces or Portal?.
A typical architecture consists in a cluster of two machines por HA.
About your response/users requirement I think that next settings will be OK (approach):
    - Each WC_SpacesX node 4g or 6g
    - Each UCM_Server 2g
    - Each WC_CollaboratrionX 1g
    - If don't use Portlets, Analytics and others you can maintain shutdown these servers.
Approximatelly you'll consume 23GB RAM with all components working (Analytics also, portlets... also).
For performance and good response of pages don't forget next tips:
    - WebTier OHS installed with DEFLATE module enabled. It reduces too much static files loaded in WebCenter like CSS, JS and Images.
    - Put your custom images in OHS instead of inside of WebCenter platform.
    - Don't install WebCache. It's not useful for WebCenter.
    - Configure JoC (Java Object Cache) for cluster caching.
Remember that this information it's only an approach based on my experience, you've to investigate and work with Oracle to decide the best apporach for your requirements.
    Regards.

  • Remote Desktop Services - VDI / Hardware and Software requiremnts

I am going to plan to do POC for 50 user on customer end for Microsoft VDI installation. For this i required hardware and software requirement.

    Hi Pratik,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
It all depends on how you want to configure your VDI environment. In Server 2012\R2 there are 2 flavors: Pooled & Personal and further can deploy both that as Managed\UnManaged deployment. You can check following article for further details.

  • Update hardware and software Qosmio G30-198 for hight performance

    Good morning,
    I have a Qosmio G30-198.
I Have to use Autodesk Civil 3D program in the laptop.
It is a CAD program that requires a lot of ram and a high speed data transmission with the HDD's.
For this, it is absolutely necessary to update hardware and software for to use Civil with good performance.
I need to buy and install SSD HDD, install more RAM (what is the maximum allowed in this computer?) and I need to install Win 7 Professional 64 bit.
    Please,
if someone can tell me how I can further improve performance of the laptop, please tell me.
I do not know what steps I have to keep.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you so much.

    >.. what a disappointment
Why? How old is your notebook? At this time 4GB was the same when you use 8GB today.
We have mobile machines with limited upgrade possibilities.
    > It is better to install hardware or soft ware? (Win 7 Proffesional)
To be honest I dont understand this question. You should upgrade RAM to the maximum level and install Win7. Im pretty sure it will work well on this old Qosmio.
If you need your notebook for some specific operations like usage of Autodesk Civil 3D program you dont even need all drivers or specific Toshiba stuff. the main thing is you have most important drivers, tools and utilities.
    > I read in a post that it is necessary to change the video driver and install a diferent that the original one.
Fact is that Toshiba recommends usage of own drivers only. Toshiba offers tested and adapted drivers for usage on mobile machines. These different drivers can help notebook owner to have better graphic performance and this new driver will force graphic card to offer more power but at the same time you must understand that more performance results with more heat. Due to specific design it is very risky for notebooks.
Have you ever cleaned up your notebook? I can imagine it is pretty much dust inside.
    > Do you think if I install G50 driver it will work in my G30?
Unfortunately I cannot comment this. Just be careful with this.

  • Access to hardware and software inventory?

It seems that as soon as I make someone an administrator in the ZCM console, they get access to all the detailed hardware and software inventory of all devices. Is this true and if so, is there a way to deny it?
What I want to be able to do is allow someone to manage bundles but not have access to the detailed hardware and software inventory of all the devices. Is this doable? I tried various combinations of deny rights but can't seem to get it to work.
    thanks for any help

  • Is the Hardware and Software enough/good for my needs

I've been reading these forums and a few others and am concerned about somethings and hope some of you can help with these concerns:
    Some background and info:
    1. I've ordered a Dell XPS 720 H2C which as a Intel Core2 Extreme processor QX6700 (3.46GHz,,Overclocked) w/Quad Core Technology and 8MBcache, 4 GB RAM, Dual 768MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX, 1.5TB RAID 0 HDD and a secondary 500GB SATA 3GB/s (No option for a RAID 0 secondary HDD, Windows VISTA ultimate OS.
    2. Will be buying/upgarding the Production Premium CS3 package. (currently only use PhotoShop CS3 and Flash CS3).
    3. I have a Canon XH A1 prosumer video camera (I'm an amature photographer/videographer not a professional. Software is my forte).
My questions at this moment are to do with hardware software capabilties and workflow.
My first project (of many I hope) is a make some corporate videos in HDV format for online marketing purposes (kind of like the videos Adobe have for CS3 - http://www.adobe.com/creativelicense/) and possibly to produce DVDs of the same.
My first question is; Given the hardware and software, will I be able to do what I need? I really hope I don't have to go buy any more hardware. I don't mind having to do one or two more steps. to achieve the end goal (initially).
Starting with the mode to shoot in (for the purpose stated above), what is my workflow going to be?
    i. What is the best mode to shoot in? (24f, 30f, 60i)
ii. How do I get the video from the MiniDV tape onto my HDD and then into Premier Pro.
iii. I need to be able to compisite multiple HDV clips to produce the final cut. Is the hardware and software good for this? On a scale of 1 to 10, what can I expect in terms of productivity.
I've heard elsewhere that Premier Pro just don't produce true HD quality results. Is this earlier versions.
What format/compression and dimension is the best for online viewing (I want to retain the HD quaility as far as possible.)
Thank you all for listening and hope to hear your opinions.
    Shiv.

    Steven,
Thank you for your quick reply and information there in. The video is very nice too. Great angles and composition.
So I guess, I'm going to have swap my drive and re-install my OS when the machine arrives.
I'm not going to be able to capture directly to my desktop (due to poratability reasons). So is there I way in Premire CS3 to uncompress the HDV from the camera and store it in my HDD in uncompressed format? I don't mind having to do this extra step each time if the post production experience is going to be better.
I've heard a lot about Aspect HD from you and others here as well as other forums. I'm not very video savvy yet and don't understand a lot of the vocabulary used :). I've been to their website and don't get what their products are supposed to give me either (I guess their audience understands exactly what they are saying).
What I do get is it decompresses the MPEG 2 to saves it to yout HDD for editing purposes. However, I would have thought the Premier Pro CS3 would have that capability as part of the product, no?
I'd also like to use footage that is not HDV as well as photos/images (composits) but still retain the final cut to be HDV quality. Is this possible and if so, what does it do to the editing experience/performance?
Will I be able to output the final cut back to my camera's Mini DV tape (without having to buy Aspect HD)?

  • Idea to store daily data of hardware and software requests submitted

    Hi All,
suggestions to allow users to input and store basic data such as date, amount of hardware and software requested per day, etc.
Ideally present it a viewable format, i.e. a chart
I'm thinking a custom list is sufficient but looking to see if anyone else has implemented something better?
    Thanks

A custom list would do, you can then use either Custom Views, Excel, REST + jQuery, Custom code or any of a dozen other options to display the data in a nice manner. It all depends on what your users need to see.

  • Hardware and Software inventory data shows blank in SCCM 2012

    Hi All,
I have this issue. When i try to view the inventory data for hardware and software it shows blank data. Below is the screenshot of that. Mine is a lab setup and i have only 2 clients configured.
I am using the default client settings which comes with priority of 10000. I altered the inventory setting to pull .dll and .exe files with changing the interval. But still the same issue. I analysed the InventoryAgent.log and found the below error on both
    the clients.
    Inventory: 1 Collection Task(s) failed.
    InventoryVersionNumber for '{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000003}' not found.
    CInvState::CheckInventoryAgentConfig: Get() failed: 80041002
    Can any one please help.
    Gautam.75801

    Hi Garth,
A reboot just fixed the issue on that system in which the options are not coming to run the setup manually.
As i had hibernated the VM's and the server in which those options were not coming is the physical box hosting the VM's (SCCM server and one more client). The physical box is also acting as a client and the SQL server holding the SCCM Database.
Now things which need to be troubleshooted are:
    1. Why is it Hardware inventory report appearing after running the setup manually and not appearing automatically.
    2. The software inventory report is not appearing at all even after it is being run manually.
Below is the screen shot of the default client settings policy i am using.
    Software inventory:
    Hardware inventory:
My LAB setup is as follows:
SCCMSVR.labtest.com  - Is the SCCM server and Fail back status point, Asset intellegence sync
    point and etc.
Server.labtest.com - Is the Domain controller, SQL server
SCCMTEST.labtest.com - A testing machine to push the client and to deploy patches in it.
    Site code is LAB
Grath - What do you suggest is the next Plan of action which you suggest ?

  • Minimum hardware and software required to install RAC

hello friends i am new to RAC and i want to install RAC on 2 nodes and i want to know about the minimum hardware and software like (RAM,HDD,OS,EXTERNAL DRIVES,NIC,SOFTWARE FOR RAC<SOFTWARE FOR CLUSTERWARE<ASM REQUIREMENTS ETC)required to install RAC??
    thanx in advance

If you choose hardware, you will need a SAN server which is necessary for RAC installation. A SAN server is expensive.
As you are new, I suppose you just want to see how is a RAC.
You may try Oracle Virtual Machine which allows you to experience RAC/Linux installation upon a cheaper PC with only 4 Go RAM and 160 Go (Windows XP is suitable).
You need some experience on how to create cluster storage system (but this is offered by Oracle Virtual Machine or VMWare).

  • Groupware conenctor Hardware and Software Installation

    Hi,
We need to install groupware connector for QA and Production systems. Client wanted to install for both the systems on one Common groupware conenctorm server.
What is the hardware and software requirement ? and what are the additional privilages required for to install this connector.
    Thanks,
    Kristene

Please find the GW Connector HW and SW requirements.
Hardware requirements actually depend on the number of users on the Groupware Server and the amount of changes to be replicated.
    The operational minimum requirements are
    <b>Component                 Description
Processor                                 Intel PIII 600 MHz or higher
    Minimum RAM                 256 MB
    Minimum Disk Space                 100 MB
    Display Mode                  640x480x16 or better</b>
Result of performance testing shows that following hardware is required to serve 1000 to 1500 users
    <b>Component                  Description
    Processor                                  Intel P4 2 GHz
    Minimum RAM                  512 MB
    Minimum Disk Space                 100 MB
    Display Mode                  640x480x16 or better</b>
Performance of the connector scales linearly – one box with 4 * Intel P4 2 GHz and 2G of memory will be able to serve about 5000 to 6000 users.
Note: all performance estimations are relevant to Groupware Connectors operating in Local Area Network environment.
Note: Groupware Connector may share the same box with relevant Groupware Server in case if the box has some performance and memory reserve. Use numbers above to check if there is enough free resources for amount of users to be served.
