IMac Late 2006 Will Not Boot Up

I have a late 2006 iMac. The problem I have is that it will not boot up. I press the power button and the light comes on but the display is blank. Do you all think the problem is the logic board?
Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Could be. Is it that the display is blank but the system is running???? If so, what if you connect an External Monitor.
My iBook has been having Logic Board issues similar to what you say though, but it's because of a chip on the lower side of the board that become desoldered. I ended up putting a small piece of rubber onto it to apply pressure onto the chip once I reapplied the case/undercover. It works & I backed up everything, but it sometime acts up again with similar symptoms as your iMac.

  • IMac (late 2006) Does not boot. No matter what I do.

    Hello all,
The iMac I have is the 17'' iMac from 2006 w/ 512mb of ram and OS x 10.4. I press the power button and immediately after the sound the apple logo and pinwheel come on but stay on. It never gets past that and I do not know what else to do. I've tried to run it in safe mode and it doesnt work. I've burned a copy of the Snow Leopard OS x DVD from my friend and it wont start from the DVD. It wont run in single user mode/ verbose mode. When I press the option button on startup with the DVD in I get two options, the HD and the DVD but no matter which one I press it just hangs. Recently I pressed the DVD option and now it goes from the apple logo to the circle with a slash symbol. What should I do??

I would suggest using either the recovery disk that came with the computer or an actual Snow Leopard disk.

Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

  • Imac crashed and will not boot up

So my iMac crashed and will not boot. The power will come on and when it switches to the boot sequence it powers off.  I bought Black Tie protection at Best Buy but when I took it to them they shipped it to Apple. The problem was never fixed. Apple said it was a software issue to reload the OS. Well i did that and not even a day went by and it is doing the same thing. Any suggestions would be helpful...

I agree with BGreg that you should run Apple Hardware Test , however run it in Extended Mode. If no errors turn up run it several times. It's a lengthy test so be patient. Also here is what Apple says about your symptoms in Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup.
I hope you have been backing up your system, if not then if you can boot into Safe Mode as suggested you should immediately backup using either a clone or Time Machine. That should be the #1 priority to preserve your data.

  • Installed Yosemite update on MacBook Pro retina late 2013 will not boot flashing folder with ?

I just Installed Yosemite update on MacBook Pro retina late 2013 will not boot flashing folder with ?

dunno, Lynn--maybe Etrecheck. trying running disk utility to verify the status of your hard drive. That may give you a basic idea. Perhaps tech tool pro.  As for it running hot, I can't say for sure. try shutting it down and using a vacuum clearner +crevice tool around the back of it.  It's been my experience that hard drives usually fail without a lot of warning, luckily you have a backup. Afterwards you can say "Yup, that went bad".  I've done a little research and found out that your MacBook Pro doesn't come with a conventional hard drive as such, but an SSD (solid state device) . It's upgradeable (up to 1 TB ) but not cheaply
go here for more info (OWC) :http://eshop.macsales.com. For right now, I'd recommend resetting the SMC/PMU, maybe zapping the pram . to do that, reboot, hold down Apple+Option, P+R keys while rebooting. Hold down for 3 chimes, let go and let it boot. as for the SMC thing....
I'm assuming your battery isn't removeable-shut down computer, plug in MagSafe cable . On built in keyboard, on left side, press Shift-Control-Option and power button at the same time.  release all the keys and the power button. press power button again to turn on computer
    that is all

  • IMac late 2006 doesn't boot

I just got a late 2006 iMac, 2.16Gh Intel Core Duo. The computer will not boot. The Apple and the spinning gear appear as thgough it will start up but the iMac shuts itself off. I used universal copys of Leopard and Snow Leopard and the computer just ejects them. How can I open the iMac to physically reset the SMU on the MLB or change the Hard Drive if necessary?
I have reset the PRAM and reset the SMU by umplugging and holding the power buttom as I plugged it in.
I do not know what operating system is on he iMac but I think it is Leopard.
What is my next step to get this iMac to boot?

I purchased from apple a copy of leopard. I purchased from apple a copy of Snow Leopard. These disks are NOT computer specific. They will work on ANY macs.
While your statement isn't correct they will not work on ANY Mac they should work fine on one of your vintage. What I mean is an license of OS X that is earlier than the original installed on the computer when it shipped from Apple will not work. For example if you bought a Mac with Snow Leopard on it you cannot install Leopard on it. However your machine originally shipped with Tiger therefore if the discs you have are upgrade DVDs of Leopard and Snow Leopard assuming your computer meets or exceeds those OS's requirements they should work fine. IN addition if the media you have is the media that shipped with other Mac's they will not work on your machine because that media is machine specific.
I'm not sure what you have (a photo of the media would be very helpful) however it's possible you have a hardware problem. What I'd recommend at this point is running Apple Hardware Test in exteneded mode. If no errors occur then run AHT in Extended Mode 2-3x, this will take awhile, probably 2-3 hours. If you still don't get any errors then your next stop is an AASP or Apple Store for professional diagnostics.

  • My iMac (late 2006) no longer boots from FireWire drives, although they contain all the system files.

My iMac (late 2006) no longer starts (boots) from Firewire drives, although they all contain a current system (Mac OS X 10.6.7). If the drives are connected with USB 2, they boot normally. The FireWire drives appear in the Start Volume program, but they do not boot. If I press and hold the Alt key while booting, only the internal drives and the USB drives appear as options. What can I do in order to boot from FireWire drives as I always could in the past?

I'd first recommend doing a SMC reset and if that doesn't work refer to:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10333969-263.html
    and
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/firewiretroubleshooting.html
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Imac 27 Intel will not boot normally only in Safe Mode

I posted previously but the answer to the question was did it wake up in safe mode, i did not give it a chance and I restored from back up to 10.10, upgraded to 10.10.1 and it worked for 1 week and returned to the previous problem.
I ran AHT - Passed, reset PRAM, verified disc - Passed, repaired permissions and removed each RAM module and still will only boot in safe mode. The crash report is below.
It locked up while on Safari, and wake up. When booting it loads the first 25% then goes to grey screen and stays there with spinning beach ball or just pointer never goes to log in screen.
In Ten (10) Crash logs it gives me the following reason:

  • Imac late 2009 do not boot

    Hello ,
my iMac24 late 2009 doesn't boot normally , only in safe mode .
After that everything works fine but no audio or cam , I've done a clean install of OSX 10.7.5 without any problem ( audio and cam working during the install process ) but once arrived to the screen " .. and now start enjoying Lion .." the screen stopped on a mix of the login screen and the desktop Andromeda Galaxy wallpaper ...
When I start from the off condition it works and the scene shows the spinning icon , but after the mouse pointer shows up I get only a blank screen and the HD makes its usual noise in the background like it's working or defraying .
Please help , many thanks ,
    moritz58

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your system DVD that originally came w/your comp while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • Pre-Intel Imac G5 17" Will not boot past safe mode, tried everything!

I have a 17" Imac with leopard that has been working fine until just recently stopped booting in anything other than safe mode. It will load the apple screen fine, then a ghost mouse image appears in the top left corner, which then appears, and sticks like you can move it. The blue screen appears and you now have your normal mouse that you can move around with the other one still froze in place, then the blue screen turns dark blue, then black and thats it. Your left with the mouse and a black screen and nothing else. I have tried resetting the ram, the hard drive checker command, apple, F O commands, single user mode, I checked the LEDS on the back the first one is always on, the second comes right on and the third lights when its supposed to. I did a complete erase and install of leopard and when the computer booted up you saw the the ghost arrow, and the same thing, but I waited awhile and you could hear the "Welcome to Leopard" music playing in the background It just doesn't make sense why the computer is not booting. Any advice is appreciated. I have tried it all. I am an apple lover, but this is one time where I am honestly about to throw it to the road.

Welcome to Discussions - from what I have seen, this could be your capacitors on your logic board about to fail, I'm afraid the cure would be a new logic bard. If you can take the back off and check to see whether the tops of the caps are bulging, that would be a definitive clue.

  • 21.5-inch iMac (late 2011) will not turn on.

My iMac went to sleep (as I normally allow it to do at night), and the next morning it would not turn on at all. No startup screen, no apple logo, nothing. I do, however, hear the fan very slightly. And every once in a while I will hear the disc drive as if it's trying to eject a disc, but after that, there is no activity.
I unplugged the iMac from the surge protector and plugged it back in, nothing. I plugged it directly into the wall and tried to turn it on, nothing. I still hear the fan, and the disc drive still tries to eject a disc occasionally (I'm not sure if there is a disc in there or not).
We did have a power outage a few days ago, but (1) it was plugged into a surge protector, and (2) I have used the iMac since then.
I searched the forums, but most solution says to perform tasks that I can't perform, because it will not turn on. I have tried resetting the SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
I would post the OS, but I'm not sure what it is, as my computer will not turn on. I know it's a version of Lion, OS X 10.7 (but I did not install the latest update yet).
Nothing has worked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you do not hear the startup chime that means your Mac has not passed it's startup diagnostics tests.
If nothing helps here > Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
Then it's probably time to take the iMac in for service >  Apple - Find Locations

I have tried multiple keystroke combinations (c + power on, option + power on, and others) upon startup and all get the same response: the computer powers on and the screen displays the apple logo. after a minute or two, the screen darkens, and a multilingual message appears telling me that I need to restart the computer. I cannot get far enough to start from a different drive or a system software disk. I cannot eject the disc currently in the drive. I cannot run any diagnostic software, cannot reinstall system software or put another disc in the drive. obviously, I am experiencing hard drive problems, but I cannot seem to get past this frustrating stumbling block. any troubleshooting or problem solving would be greatly appreciated. I have checked other discussions and support forums, but cannot find any that reference the specifics that I have mentioned. I have researched and tried the logic board check and many other potential "solutions", but none of the discussions mention the gray screen "you must restart your computer" message that I continually receive.

What you are experiencing is called a Kernel Panic.
First, to get the disc out of the drive, hold the mouse button down as you reboot.
Have you tried resetting the SMU?
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Then try booting from your install disc and running Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    Please post back with results,
