IMac losing signal of the network

Hi,
I have a wireless conection as my only way to access the internet, the wireless router is near the iMac and the signal is really clear.
Many times a day my Mac stops comunicating with the router and I need to close the internet using app and then reopen it to gain access again to the internet.
When that happens my iMac is always encountering new wireless networks, so i think my iMac gets confused and is trying to access the other networks, so the apps forget how to access the net.
is there a way to tell my mac to only search for my network and not for anyones network?
should i change the channel of the signal (1 to 11 i think)?
change the encryptation to dav, wep or something else?
get into the terminal?
I have access to my gateway config page. its a 2Wire 2701HG-T Gateway
thanks from Mexico
the problem does not occur with my G3 iBook

Based on that Time Machine storage reference, is this iMac possibly running Mac OS X Server?  If this is Mac OS X Server, does this server have static IP address, and valid DNS services?
Are all the IP addresses in the same IP subnet?  Are you using one of the private IP address subnets?
Are there any wired network connections in use, in addition to wireless?
Are you located in an area where there may be many wireless IP networks installed?

    Hi ChrisBell,
my Pixi shows me the missed calls in a list of its own? I don't have many, so maybe I'm missing something. But I agree with your half-ranting to some degree. As a long-time Palm-user (my last phone was a Treo 680, terrible form factor, good UI), I am really disappointed with the standard software on this phone. Memos and Tasks, which AFAIK were there and useful even on the first Newton's, have regressed beyond the point of usefulness now (solution: Toodledo and Done!, at least for now).
But ChrisBell: if you feel up for it, you could start tinkering. Many people love these phones so much they have started developing patches to solve the obvious problems skimmed over by developers. Try looking up "webosquickinstall" and "preware", and you will find over 300 patches and a lot of free software to help you out. I am not a computer wizard myself, but I am not scared of them either, and I have been able to make good use of all these extras made available by the community.
just a thought, might help you out on a few of your half-rants

  • IMac always falling off the network

I have my iMac always on, serving up our big ITunes library to our wireless network around the house. It seems to fall off the network fairly regularly, every few days or so. I have the newer Airport extreme and several Airport expresses (not the latest ones) connected to stereos in different rooms of the houses.
But this has always happened, for a year or so. Anyone know what it might be? thanks!

I have exactly the same problem and called tech support (not helpful at all, they need to work on their listening skills) and have no idea what is going on. I have found a temporary solution and that is to reset the basestation and not use any security or hardware access and it seems to work fine for a long time with no problems. my problem (not sure if this is the same problem as you but...) whenever I put any kind os security or hardware acccess on the network my mac either can seem to find the thing or does and randomly cuts out. I of course check my signal strength and it always says it is full.
    any help please

  • Imac can see all the network

I am new to mac and switch after my pc died. I have put the imac onto a windows network. Our network has 2 domains. The imac can see one but not the other. One server issues dynamic IP and the other is static. I have email accounts on both domains and via entourage they both appear to be running properly. The network runs XP pro machines and the servers run windows 2000. Can anyone please give me some pointers as to what settings to check. I have seen a file and print share utility for 2000 that isnt installed - does it need this to work ?

Thank you very much once again for trying to help with the two problems that I am experiencing. Unfortunately, following your advice and having creating a new administrator’s user account on the same work group ,I am still unable to connect to the windows XP pc other than as a Guest.
I have additionally entered “Network access: Sharing and Security Model for Local Accounts” on the XP and changed “Guest Only” to “Classic”.
I have also disabled “Simple File Sharing" ( My Computer…Tools…Folder options…View).
The oddity remains in that when I click on the Shared column item on my iMac to open the connection to my laptop running Windows 7,the first screen to appear identifies “USERS” and not the list of shared folders (without USERS) as when I connect to the XP.
Please have you any suggested remedy for removing the message:-
“Operation can’t be completed because the original item for “xxx” can’t be found”
Thanks once again…. much appreciated.    Colin.

  • Losing Connection to the Network

    Hello all,
For several years I have had problems with getting disconnected while playing video games whenever someone calls.  Now I am having the problem but nobody is calling it just kicks me offline for no reason.  I thought the problem before was that my phone and wireless were the same Ghz (2.4) but now that the phone isn't causing interference I don't know what is. My Router is a broadband 2.4 GHz Wireless-G router - Model # WRT54GS.  I also have a AARIS Touchstone Telephony Modem that Comcast gave us.  The problem that I thought I solved was by adding in a linksys Wireless-G Range Expander so that the connection could go from my room upstairs down to my basement, this is not the case anymore.  I seem to be able to play for 20 minutes or so but then it says I do not have connection to the network, the only things I can think of are:
    1. We need a new router, this one is old and outdated.
    2. With no password on our connection someone is using it and causing too much activity. If that's the case should I get rid of the expander and or add a password?
Thanks for any of your help or suggestions.

Also change the channel on the router's wireless to 11. This is the least used frequency.
Also keep your phone away from the router. Can't tell you how many calls I got because of cordless phone interference when I worked tech support

  • Machines losing connection to the Network

We are experiencing some irregular network issues whereby we have 2 G4 Mirror Door Desktops acting at servers (10.3.9) and a variety of Powerbook G4s and Macbook Pro's (10.4.x) which are continually dropping off the network sporadically. Apart from these two desktop servers, all the machines affected are laptops strangely enough.
Firewall is not enabled on the Macs.
The Macs lose all network connectivity including printing, internet connection and server connection.
I have tested pinging to and from the Macs and the results are always as though they are off the network. The Macs can however ping itself indicating it can see a network. Whe you remove the machine from the network and re-add it, the IP address range is 169.x.x.x. This is because by default, Apple allocates the user with an IP range so far off the network that its indicating it can see a connection (ie ethernet card and cable) but cannot see the network.
To get the machine back on the network, you need to remove and re-add the network cable to get connection again. We looked into every possibility inclusing Firewall or DNS issues.
We have compared the switches and vLANs and they are all the same; we have checked that Appletalk is broadcasting correctly through the switch; we have added the machines with a static IP address (servers have static IP addresses anyway)and the machines still drop off; we have altered DHCP lease renewal to a longer period and it still dropped off; removed Appletalk from a machine and it still dropped off.

It may be a 'typo' by you, but forget about 'appletalk' - this is not relevant to your problem (and pretty well redundant now). This looks like a TCP/IP issue.
What is doing your DHCP? Presumably you have checked to ensure that there is only the one dhcp server in your network, and another has not accidentally been enabled (on a server, router or airport). What is the dhcp range for the DHCP server?
Your post suggested that the servers, with static IPs, also 'drop off' the network. So a server IP cannot be pinged from a lan machine which has a correct IP assigned to it (rather than one which has a 169 address which obviously will not be able to ping it) ?
On your laptops, when connected via an ethernet cable, have a look at Network Prefs-> Show: Network Port Configurations. In what order are these? Specifically, I am wondering if Airport is getting prioritised above Built-in Ethernet and maybe there is a 'rogue' airport network which the laptops discover and attempt to join ahead of built-in ethernet.

  • My iMac won't join the correct network

This is a new iMac with Lion.  The network is ok because all my other devices work fine with it.  The network is in the list and when I select it my mac joins without problem, but won't join it automatically.  I've also tried to move my network up in the list but that doesn't seem to work either.

Mine is the only network listed in the Perferred Networks List in the advanced settings.  The "Remember networks this computer has joined" is checked.
The problem is that when I wake my computer up, it won't find the network.  I updated my airport extreme last week and this problem started after that.  However, none of the other devices using this network are having any problems.

  • AE green light but still Unable to join the network - G5 and iPad 1st Gen

I gave my old 1st gen AE to my parents as they got an iPad and needed Wi-Fi. The AE is plugged directly into their ADSL box (Livebox - Orange in France if it makes any difference) and it worked from when they plugged it in a few weeks ago until now for some reason.
It still lights up with a continuous green light and both their G5 iMac and iPad finds the network (Apple Network Bbf09-whatever) but won't allow them to sign on. There is no password (never has been) as they live out in the country side so no leaching. They can individually sign on (one at the time only) wirelessly from the Orange ADSL modem which is no good.
Tried to unplug everything: ADSL Modem and AE left unplugged for a couple of minutes and reinserted. Still the light is solid green, shows up on the list of networks but won't connect. Keeps saying "Unable to join the Network"?
    Anyone having any ideas?

UPDATE: It turned out to be the ISP. The signal quality that came in was not very good for some reason and caused problems with the WiFi through the AX.

  • G3/OS 10.3 does not recognize the network

I just mounted a new Airport network card into a (WiFi capable slot) iMac G3 (576 Mb RAM) running OSX 10.3. After restart, the Airport icon in the toolbar is present, albeit all gray, as one would expect before connecting.
My network is served by a D-Link 801.11G WiFi router. SSID is not cloaked - it is broadcast and freely accessible: It works, several (non-Apple) laptops recognize the network and connect to it fine.
However, my iMac does not see the network, neither from the Airport icon in the toolbar nor scanned from the Airport Setup Wizard. I located the iMac right next to the WiFi point to eliminate any signal strength/interference issues.
I will bring an Airport iBook G4 as well as an Airport Express wireless point to check if there is something wrong with this iMac's card, and will also bring in a long CAT5 patch cord to hard-connect the G3 (to download any Airport patches or firwmare upgrades), but was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on why a non-cloaked 802.11G network would not be recognized by my iMac.

Ensure that you have the antenna wire properly connected to the AirPort card in the iMac.
Also ensure that your D-Link is configured to work either in 802.11b/g or "802.11b only" mode. Since the original AirPort card in your iMac is 802.11b, your router must be in a 802.11b compatible mode.

  • Our ISP changed the way we access the internet. Since then, wireless devices such as iPhone, iPad and iPod won't connect to the wireless and hold on to it. Devices get on, but then drop the network and can't get back on. Then it will appear, magically.

Our devices keep getting dropped off the wi-fi. The computer and lap top are fine, but the iPad, iPhone, and iPod all keep losing access to the network. We have tried:
Resetting the D-link, restoring Airport Extreme to its factory settings, resetting netowrk settings, powering down devices, turning wi-fi on and off. It has been pretty frustrating to say the least. This all started after our ISP changed our... I am not sure what it is called, but the thing stuck on the house outside to broadcast across the valley to the mountain where we get our internet.... Any other fixes?

I guess the issue is the Airport Extreme. We put back our old D-link and everyone is on. The Extreme did not live up to my hopes - (guest network, limit wi-fi for my children's devices to a certain time period...) And, it didn't last long - I think it is only a year old, if that. I have restored it to factory settings but to no avail.... perhaps it was a dud. Is anyone else actually able to limit access? I set it up but it quit working over and over and the kids were on whenever. Then we started losing all the devices in the last few weeks - laptop fine for wi-fi, iPad, iPod, iPhone all randomly kicked off and let back on.
This is a great idea - and it would be worth replacing if I knew my new on would work. Thanks for replying lllaass!

  • I open my safari internet in my macbookpro oneday and it says cant open page because you are not connected to the internet. I look into the network but it was connected to a network why is that?

  • My fix for the AE dropping off the network in client mode

    Turn off any encryption.
I have the linksys/vonage/wireless G router, which supports WPA. The AE will sometimes join the network with WPA but it takes anywhere from 1-5 minutes for it to do so. When finally on the network it shows up on the Airport manager list and in iTunes. The most playtime I could get out of it was 15 mins, before it would drop from the network. The light on the AE would be solid green, but I couldn't ping it. The only solution was to power cycle the AE. Note this is dropping w/out running the microwave, cordless phone, verifying my network channel is different from my neighbors, etc.
I tried fiddling with WEP but the only way I could get that working was to specify the full key in hex, appearantly Apple and Linksys don't agree on the way to take a passphrase and turn it into a key.
So I dropped to the unencrypted network, disabled the SSID broadcast and restricted wireless access to my machines. Works great now. :/ If I run the microwave and the cordless phone at the same time I can get Airtunes to drop, but it comes right back when the microwaving is done.
Very frustrating, and the part that is the most irritatating is that my mac laptop and iMac can get on the network just fine.
Still deciding if I want to keep it this way or say nevermind and return the AE.

I found the solution after many many many attemps.
It's not a MBP problem, it's your wireless router.
1- Set your BEACON between 20 and 50. D-LINK router for example use 100 has default value. It's too long.
2- Change your channel. D-link default is 6. Use whatever channel. I use 10.
    Hope you enjoy!
