IMac M5521

I recently acquired an iMac M5521. It has both os x 10.1x and 9.2 classic. I am wondering if I can install a newer OS on this machine. It runs fine in the classic mode, but when I use the 10.1x mode the internet browser crashes. Also, when I try to enter a live chat site, it will load the room structure but will not initiate the chat or show the users in the room. I know that it has something to do with the age of the OS versus the modern technology of the internet, so I've been considering upgrading the OS to something newer in order to surf the net with minimal difficulty.
This machine has 256mb of ram and runs at 500mhz clock speed. If anyone knows of a Mac OS that will run on it, please let me know.

Read the system requirements. One thing that strikes me is your RAM is awfully low for just about any version of OSX, even if it does meet min. specifications for some. 500 MHz, while modest, should work okay for anything up to Tiger.

How much free space on the drive? OSX needs lot of free space. I usually leave 15GB free for Tiger.
Your browser issue, while easily related to the age of the browser and the OS, could also be exacerbated by too little RAM and too little free space on the hard drive.
There's several browsers suitable for older systems. I think Camino, Opera... Browse this forum and the Panther and earlier forum for ideas. The main hurdle will be any site requiring Flash since that is limited by the OS version.

IMac M5521 family - looking for correct AHT disc

Hi,
I just got a couple of old teardrop style iMac's - from the M5521 family. I've tried several hardware test CD's and DVD's on them and they all report that it is the wrong version.
The specs from the label are:
400MHZ/512K L2/CACHE/64MB SDRAM
IMAC DV 10GB HD/DVD/56
If anyone could at least tell me the correct version, I may be able to find it!

What versions did you try with your iMac DV400? The AHT disk [iMac Version 1.2.2, for use with iMac (Summer 2000), iMac (Early 2001), and iMac ( Summer 2001)] would have been identified with this part number 693-4327-A. The disk image for it can be downloaded here.

I bought an imac m5521 for my daughter. It powered no problem. I took it to the genius bar to have them reload the OSx tiger (to erase the guys info) they troubleshooted the computer - clean. They even downloaded tiger and burned it (since they did not have a copy) and gave it to me after boot up.
I turned it on this am - great no issues. I had a black screen after a while and I could not "wake it up" '
So i did a power down with holding the power button.
SInce that, I plugged it back in - and all I am getting is a grey screen with nothing else. I have tried to do the hold option down on start up also the shift button. Nothing.
can anyone PLEASE give me any suggestions on what to do.

Try holding down the option key then powering on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
The simplest thing would be to re-install.
The good news is that you could buy an external firewire 400 hd & intall the os on it & boot off it. I you cannot fix the ?.
You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
The latest the hard drive enclosures support the newer serial ata drives. The drive and closure that I list supports only older parallel ata.

Trying to update 10.4.6 to a newer version

Hello all I've been trying to update my system from 10.4.6 to 10.4.11 I tried the intel and power pc version (combo) when I go to install the updates it tells me that this update cannot be updated on my computer. Does any one know how i can do an update in a 500Mhz power PC slot load iMac M5521 Indigo. Below is my computer info if that helps.

How do I remove the Hard disk from computer? I have an old iMac, model M5521 circa 2000. I need to wipe the disk clean to DOD specs before donating it.

I pulled the original 10G hard drive from our M5521 and replaced it with a larger one. The whole thing took under 45 minutes, including the 15 minutes it took me to recover a screw that fell into the works.

What is the max ram for a iMac DV 400mhz? (family M5521)

I've read several posts on this forum about the max memory for this iMac. Several people say it's 512 then usually someone comes back and says "Actually it's 1024". As per the Apple specs page (posted below) the Min is 64MB and the Max is 512MB. Is that overall system, or per slot? I'm guessing it's per slot, since it has two slots and the Ram Sizes states it can handle a 512 chip (2 slots @ 512 ea. = 1024) am I wrong in this?

First ensure that you have the correct firmware installed. See Announcement: iMac (Slot Loading): Install iMac Firmware 4.1.9 Before Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
You will need OS 9 installed on the hard drive to install that firmware update. If OS 9 is currently on the hard drive you can install the firmware update (if needed) before swapping the hard drive.
Yes you can install OS 10.3 directly without installing OS 9. If there is any possibility that you will want to boot from OS 9 in the future, ensure that you pick the option to install the OS 9 disk drivers.

Is My M5521 imac useable?

I turned on my blue imac and it gave me a message to download text encoder or reinstall system software. I do not have th system software.
When I go online, there are strange symbols at top of the page and some web sites are not readable, just a list of symbols. Is there a place to get the text encoder or whatever I need?

The problem is that you're running OS 9.2.x, and it's very hard to find supported pre-OS X browsers anymore. If you're using Internet Explorer 5.x, it's obsolete and not supported by most web sites. If you really want to keep using your old iMac, you should buy/install OS X (Panther or Tiger) on it, so that you can run a decent, supported browser. This may require a larger hard drive (depending on the available free space on it) and more physical memory (I'd recommend at least 256 MBs). In addition to the software, if you need to spend the money for these hardware improvements, you'll be investing more money in the computer than it's current market value. Also, those CRT iMacs tend to develop problems with the PAV board as they age. If it goes bad, you're left with a repair that requires an experienced tech to perform, because of the danger of serious electrical shock. For most users, this essentially retires the computer, because it isn't cost-effective to pay someone to replace that component with a used/pulled part that will ultimately fail like the original. New parts for 12 year-old Macs are not available.

From the information supplied, I'd guess that the machine has been loaded with OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). You need the 10.2 installation disc to reset the password.
It is not wise to buy any Mac without all the original installation discs, and any discs required for a later OS which may have been installed.
It won't boot from a USB stick or USB drive. It may be possible to boot from a firewire external drive running OS X 10.2 or later, or in firewire target mode from another OS X Mac. It won't boot from an external DVD drive.
That model originally shipped with OS9 and either OS X 10.0 or 10.1 (neither of which was worth installing).

Presumably this is the specification printed on the underside of the casing, in which case 6GB is the original HD size. The model did later ship with up to 40GB however, and it's certainly possible that it may have been replaced.
One caveat; some 6GB models could only be booted from a 6GB or smaller partition, so any upgrade would have to be partitioned accordingly.
If you get hold of a retail OS X disc 10.2 or later (but not 10.5), BSD is available from the installer as an optional installation (with the main OS). It's unlikely the previous owner would have installed it however.

IMac DV G3 firmware/OS 9 install

Just wondering if anyone can advise me on this as I'm getting a little lost as to what I need to do or how to do it. I've just got my hands on an old but mint condition iMac DV (G3 M5521) 500Mhz with 30Gb HD and 256 RAM (it also has the slot-loading DVD). Anyway a bit of research has confirmed that I can upgrade this as far as Tiger with a RAM upgrade to 1Gb). However, it is currently running OS X 10.2.8. When I try to put in my OS X 10.3 upgrade it tells me that I need to update the iMac's firmware (Firmware update 4.1.9). I can only do this in an OS 9 environment though not while booting in OS X. I have tried to install OS 9.2.1 off a friend's CD but got the error 'Classic startup found no system folder on the boot volume from which to start Classic'. I then realised I would probably need to partition the HD so that I could have one partition for OS X and one for OS 9. I'm fine with the partitioning the HD but I have no idea where to go from there or whether I can actually install from the 9.2.1 disc. Can anyone help me?

That message indicates you tried to run the installer on the CD while the machine was still booted to OSX. The OS 9 installers on all OS 9 install CDs will work only when the machine is booted to OS 9, typically the OS 9 on the CD itself.
The solution would be to boot the machine to the CD. To do this, with the CD in the drive, restart, immediately press the C key, keep it held down until you know the machine has started to load the OS on the CD. Booting to a CD takes significantly longer than booting to an OS on a hard drive, so wait it out.

Provided the CD is a retail one (white label with a large gold 9), it should work fine.
If it is a model-specific disk (grey or blue-grey label, states a machine model on the label), it probably will not work.
I then realised I would probably need to partition the HD so that I could have one partition for OS X and one for OS 9.
It is not necessary to partition the hard drive; both OS's (OSX and OS 9) are designed to co-exist on the same volume. However, there are advantages to having each OS on its own volume (volume = an unpartitioned drive, or a partition of a partitioned drive).
If you're willing to do that, you can do it while booted to the OS 9 Install CD. Note - partitoning a drive will erase all data currently on it, so be sure to back up anything you do not want to lose to another disk.
This article can help you partiton the drive using OS 9's Drive Setup utility -

Be sure to select Mac OS Extended as the format.
I would suggest setting no more than 10GB for the OS 9 partition; 5GB will be probably be enough provided you do not intend to use OS 9 for disk-space intensive work, such as audio editing or movie making.
If you plan to spend most of your time and effort in OSX, then make it the first partion (top one in the list) and OS 9 the second one. Reason - the first partition will be the fastest one for read/write purposes.
It is possible that when you boot the machine to the OS 9 Install CD that the hard drive's icon will not be available (mounted) on the desktop. This usually means that the drive was last formatted using OSX's Disk Utility, and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected.
The solution for that is to reformat the drive. And, if you need to do that, you can choose to partition it at that time.

Older iMac display stretched horizontally

I have an older iMac (family number M5521) that still works well except that everything on the screen is stretched out horizontally. I am looking for suggestions as to possible causes, possible repairs, or just recycle it!

Can you estimate how much it is stretched? Can you see the Apple at left, for example? Is the stretched even throughout the screen? There is no other distortion?
That family number is not so helpful - the processor speed is.
It's possible one of the software adjustments got out of whack, but more likely an electronic component broke. If your unit is the vintage I think, the adjustments require opening the live computer, attaching a jumper wire, and running adjustment software - not recommended unless you know the risks of injury or death. If a part broke, replacing the whole analog board is easiest, but not too cost effective at this point.
Generally, all things considered, you would probably be better off considering something newer.

I already updated the firmware to 4.1.9 and installed Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and OS 9.2.2.
I currently have the Matshita 8184 (Panasonic) DVD ROM (SlotIn) with Firmware AA31.
I read there was a AA27 before and I also read that there is an update 1.0
When I tried to install Firmware Update 1.0, it said, it already got updated.
I even found Firmware Update 1.1 for the DVD ROM (fixes audio cd readability)

I wanted to test the machine using your Apple Hardware Test, but I was told, that there never was a AHT for my 1999 machine.
I was also told that there was a "iMac 400 MHz DV Special Edition" in mid 2000, which supported the AHT (1.0.1 (?)) and its only difference to my iMac 400 MHz DV would be the ATI 128 Pro instead of a 128vr. (?)
Are there any other differences ? Would that AHT run on my machine then ? I ask because :

I have a lime-colored G3 iMac DV (400 MHz) from 1999. The iMac DV SE that shipped in 2000 had a 500 MHz processor, a 30 GB hard drive, a 4x DVD-ROM drive, the marginally better ATI Rage128 Pro GPU, and 128 GBs of SDRAM. It was available in Graphite or Snow. The internal DVD-ROM drive may have had a sequentially newer model number, than that used in the 1999 models. I wouldn't be concerned about updating the firmware in your DVD-ROM drive - it is what it is - a 15 year-old computer with similarly dated hardware. I didn't receive an AHT disk with mine, and have had no reason to run it anyway. If you would like a much more modern internal DVD±RW drive, you can buy one here for $149. Obviously, that exceeds the value of your iMac. With onboard FireWire ports, I have used external CD-RW and DVD±RW drives, rather than replace the internal drive. A common problem with those slot-loading optical drives occurs when the neoprene sleeved rollers (that pull in and roll out the disk) get dry/slick with age. This will cause slipping and is usually indicated when the disk repeatedly gets stuck, as the motor keeps churning to eject it. I maxed out the memory at 1 GB and installed an 80 GB hard drive, but that's all. As for the resolution setting, I wouldn't be concerned about using a 60 Hz refresh rate (and dealing with the annoying flicker). Just select the optimal resolution & refresh setting. The greater concern for component failure in those iMacs is its Power-Analog-Video (P-A-V) board, which is the heart of the system's power. Replacement requires previous experience with CRT repair, because of the potentially dangerous stored electrical charge that must be properly discharged in order to swap P-A-V boards. Finding a new "old-stock" P-A-V board would be difficult, if not impossible today. Installing a used part with unknown remaining service life could be a waste of money. If you wish to boot from your Tiger installation, you can press/hold down the "X" key when you power ON the computer. That model also supports using the Startup Manager, which you can read about here.

IMac G3 Speaker Removal, iMac G3 Speaker Removal

In order to remove and replace the drive on my iMac G3 Blue, family M5521, I have to remove the speakers but can't seem to get them off and don't want to force them off and break their plastic mounts. Does anyone out there have a suggestions since they may have dealt with this type of issue?
I'll be checking back intermittently all day and tomorrow to see if I can luck out finding someone who has dealt with this problem. Thanks in advance.

I have just replaced the speakers in a friends blue G3 iMac. Removing the old ones requires a lot careful pressure and twisting while moving them away from the case. Unplug the wires from the connectors.
Once removed you can open the case by removing the centre screw in the speaker housing and using a flat blade screwdriver gently in the slot at the front to 'crack' the two halves. Then just pull the case apart.
The 24mm speakers are difficult to find so I went to a discount shop and found some ipod mini speakers for $4. They are about 45mm 2W ones with a silver cone and fitted very nicely in the circular cutout space on the plastic front panel on the main chassis. Cut off the speaker wires and solder them to the new ones.
I used some plastic glue to secure them and re-assembled the case. They sound much better than the originals and look fine behind the existing speaker grills.
So, I just figured out that the speaker has a hook attached to it that latches underneath the chassis to keep it secured to the platform.
Used a slotted screwdriver to get underneath and release the plastic hook. The hook was a bit damaged when I finished, but it released fine.

1) yes you can use DSL with what you have, but you want more RAM and I would recommend getting OSX.3 or above because the web browsers for OS9, which I assume is what you are running, are a bit dated and not well supported any longer.
2) Yes you can add more RAM. The 64meg stick in there can be removed. You can add up to 1 Gig of RAM via two 512Mb PC100 or PC133 DIMMS.

3) No you can not use CD-R or CDRW with the hardware you have. That iMac only has a CDRom drive and can not burn CDs. You can buy an external CD burner if you want to back up to CDRs
