IMac Mail always looking for mail...

Mail is always looking for new messages - how do I stop it? It is constantly grinding away, trying to find new mail. Force quit stops it, but as soon as I open Mail again, it begins looking for mail to load. New messages come through okay, but it doesn't stop after they are loaded.

Thanks, but I did that - selected 'Manually', then Force Quit. When I reopened Mail, all was quiet. It wasn't looking for mail. Then I clicked on 'Check for new messages'. It downloaded new messages and kept on spinning, looking for others. It doesn't stop. I don't know why...

  • Buying Used iMac - What to look for?

    Hello,
I'm a devoted mac user. I currently own a late 2008 unibody Macbook, and have been looking for an upgrade. I came across a used iMac posting on a craigslist-like website. The configuration is a low-end mid-2011 21" iMac (quad core i5, 4gb, 500gb).
I asked the seller for the serial number and checked it out the support site. The warranty is due to run out on Thursday, just enough time for me to buy extended AppleCare. The price seems reasonable (approx $730 whereas a new iMac is $1200), and I've asked to see the iMac in person tomorrow. I wanted to know what to look for when making the final decision.
Also do you think I should hold out for an Ivy Bridge iMac (rumoured to be coming soon??) or will it not make a difference for normal coding/browsing (no photo/video editing/gaming)? One factor discouraging me is that Apple has hitched up the prices for the newly released Macbooks here in India (the base 13" pro used to be $1250, now $1530!!!).
    Thanks a lot!

Oh! Had no idea about this... how does one release the account? I mean, is there a way i can check it on the machine itself? The applecare site doesn't show any registration info.
    Thanks!!

I am trying to transfer files from my MacBook (source) running OSX 10.7.5 to my IMAC  (target) running OSX 10.9.1.  Machines connected by ethernet cable.  On Target machine I get "Looking for other sources" and on source machine I get "Looking for other computers".  Both have clockwise spinning wheel.
    Looking for advise.

If you are connecting the two computers directly to each other with an ethernet cable, you need a special "crossover" cable to swap the send/receive pins so the data sent from one computer arrives on the "receive" pins on the other end of the cable, not on the "send" pins that you get with a straight cable.
Incorrect, you do not need a special crossover cable. Any cable will do.

  • IMac M5521 family - looking for correct AHT disc

    Hi,
I just got a couple of old teardrop style iMac's - from the M5521 family.  I've tried several hardware test CD's and DVD's on them and they all report that it is the wrong version.
The specs from the label are:
    400MHZ/512K  L2/CACHE/64MB SDRAM
    IMAC DV 10GB   HD/DVD/56
If anyone could at least tell me the correct version, I may be able to find it!
    Thanks!

What versions did you try with your iMac DV400?  The AHT disk [iMac Version 1.2.2, for use with iMac (Summer 2000), iMac (Early 2001), and iMac ( Summer 2001)] would have been identified with this part number 693-4327-A.  The disk image for it can be downloaded here.

  • Screensaver always looks for external server when iPhoto event selected as screensaver.

When I have iPhoto selected as a source for displaying pictures on screen saver, the screen saver always tries to connect to my external server although the photos are resident on the macbook HD.  How can I change the default behaviour so it will not do this.  If I am not a home the screensaver will not display any photos since it cannot connect to the server.

    1. It's not a problem as you never ever access your photos in this way.
    2. If you want to back up your original photos you do this via the Export function: File -> Export
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
    3. None of this saves space on your HD. To do that you need to move your Library from the HD to the external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    a. Quit iPhoto
    b. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    c. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    d. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    4. That particular Apple Genius isn't.
    As to the specific questions:
Why is this happening? And can I fix it so that it doesn't happen when I next import photos into iPhoto?
It's happening as that is how iPhoto works and there is nothing ti fix. Exporting makes the issue redundant.
Should I just stop using iPhoto?
    Why?
What happens if I change the names of the Master folders in the back end of iPhoto to reflect the Event names in the front end?
You'll corrupt the Library. And it's unnecessary.
Would it be better to just organise them on my hard drive?
    No.

  • Laptop always looking for e-printer? Using up all my memory!

In the task manager window on my computer, I see that there is a process that does not end that keeps trying to find the e-printer when I'm away/undocked near the printer.  Is there a fix out there for this?  A way to turn it off?   I'm running out of memory .  Thanks

    Hi kat61,
Thank you for the detail. Please try disabling the Scan Activation to resolve the issue. Use the steps below to disable the Scan Activation.
    1. Open the HP software by clicking on the desktop icon or by opening it from the programs folder <All Programs>HP>Product>
    2. Navigate to the Heading Scanner Actions in the software and click on the link titled Manage Scan to Computer
    3. Disable the activation and uncheck the box to automatically restart the activation when you log back in.
Keep the scan deactivated unless you need to scan, at which time simply enable the activation by reversing the steps above.
Set ink alerts to show only when you print if it is not already. To do this, open the HP software and click on estimated ink levels.
The printer toolbox appears - Select the advanced settings tab
On the advanced settings tab, make sure the default is set to 'Only show me ink alerts when I print'. Let me know if that has any impact
You will need to uncheck the box that states re-enable after computer restarts / reboots automatically

Another possibility is the ink alerts. Lets set ink alerts to show only when you print if it is not already. To do this, open the HP software and click on estimated ink levels.
The printer toolbox appears - Select the advanced settings tab
On the advanced settings tab, make sure the default is set to 'Only show me ink alerts when I print'.
Please let me know the outcome of these efforts, thanks.

  • My Macbook Air is always "looking for a network"

The computer is constantly disconnecting, searching, then reconnecting to the network. This amounts to an extremely slow internet experience and no capabilities to watch videos at all! Not even youtube, as it can't buffer ahead. It is ironic that my 10 year old Powerbook G4 is faster than my brand new Macbook Air!!
2 weeks ago I had this complaint and Apple replaced the airport card and now the problem, which was annoying before, is much worse and not tolerable. It takes 2 minutes to load a google search!
I have a feeling this is something to do with the setup because I have heard that one of the upgrades on iPads was to disconnect when on 3G/4G networks to save data use but this is completely absurd on a laptop. Any chance the new programming was across the board on all airport updates?(good chance this ipad thing was just a rumor too!- I don't really know)
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Enter the PIN code that the user used to lock the device originally, using Find My Mac to have done so.
Alternatively, go to an Apple Store to have it unlocked. Be prepared to prove the unit belongs to you. As the PIN code feature is designed for owners to thwart thieves who have stolen a device.

  • When I start Firefox 6.0, it always looks for updates, even though I have this feature turned off in Options. How do I change this?

This isn't a big issue, just annoying.

  • What to look for in external HD

I'm about to buy a new external hard drive. I've always looked for an apple logo when buying this sort of stuff, but seriously, it's a stupid hard drive. I need a USB 2 port and power. If it is formatted different than I want then I can change it. Time Machine will make a separate disc image anyways, so does a logo matter? Should I just look for something on super-duper-extra-laser sale? Yes, budget-brand drive and my MBP COULD crash at the same time? Am I forgetting anything?
Unrelated, but I just saw the CEO of Seagate talk about backing up from "an internet or an iTunes". Internet gold found at:
    http://online.wsj.com/video/seagate-latest-consumer-launch/96D2BB41-DDE1-4D89-A2 84-23CEEB1520EE.html

I would pick an HD that you feel comfortable with. FYI, Apple outsources its HDD, so an Apple logo doesn't really mean much if you are looking for an HDD. Apple puts Maxtor and Western Digital HDDs in its iMacs and Hitachis in its 500GB Time Capsule. I don't know if there are any other makes Apple uses, but I hope you get my point. Just make sure that once you pick one out, check the partition scheme and formatting and re-partition and re-format. Many are formatted for PCs out of the box. If you need wireless Time Machine backups and in the market for an AirPort Extreme Base Station, check out the Time Capsule.

  • Are you happy with your Galaxy S5?  I'm looking for a new phone.

Are you happy with you Galaxy S5?  I'm looking for a new phone.

Very happy after getting it to stop keeping the display lit after charging completes.  Battery life blows my Galaxy Nexus out of the water.  The GNex was like an electric car with a 30 mile range.  Always looking for a charge.  The S5's screen is gorgeous.  OLED is a must-have for me.  Signal strength is better than the GNex and the S5 is XLTE-ready so you can get faster speeds in those markets.  I got 69.08/18.95 in Kansas City back in May.  Other XLTE areas have had download speeds of high 20s to low 30s.  Performance is good.  The interface feels smooth and responsive.  I even like the look.  It's like something out of a 50s diner.
My only real gripe is the storage.  16 gigs is pretty sad these days and only 10 gigs are available.  I know you can add a 128 gig card (I have) but few apps load completely to the card.  Heck, lots of apps won't put anything on the card.  A flagship phone should have 32 and 64 gig options.
I also wish I could just load the bare OS and skip all the bells and whistles that Samsung's added.

  • RAZR HD, why does my phone look for a Wi-fi when I am going onto the internet?

My Droid 3 seemed to have a better connection to the internet and I never had to set up a Wi-Fi connection.
    Any advice?

Ahauben4, that's a great question and I'm sure we can figure this out! Just to clarify, is your phone asking you to connect to to a WiFi network because one is available or is it saying no 3G/4G connection available? If you have WiFi turned on, it will always look for available connections. Please turn off WiFi in Settings, Wireless & Networks. If you're having problems connecting to internet over 3G/4G, what city and state are you located in?

  • Mail help! Looking for an additional Mail App for Exchange!

I have been desperately looking for an additional (not the built in) app so I can read my corporate email on my iphone. Does anyone know of such an app?
    Thanks...

With the general Mailbox I got 4 mailboxes. 3 that I always have to be alerted when mail comes in, the general one I have to check in only once in a while. I always have all mailboxes open, however if I have the darn general mailbox in there i loose control over what's important. So I use safari right now for that busy mailbox which is cumbersome.
I just wanted a separate mailbox that doesn't alert me every 2 minutes of incoming mail, yet easy enough to check what's in it when I need it.
I'll give ibismail a try. Thanks.

  • Looking for Mail wildcard search

    Hi All,
I have an incredible amount of data in my Mail app and would like to speed up my sorting of it.
Emails are filtered to folders by mail rules depending on the mail subject but I'd like to manually filter them further,
rules can not accommodate this. My manual sorting is based on small strings of info in the content of the email.
Basically what I'm looking for is a search wildcard that allows me to use * or ? as any character. I have tried both and they
don't work. Is there another wildcard character I can use?

of course, you're always dependent on the company/community/developers of the software... (else there would be no software)
with the sentence "I want to be independent from .." I meant, that I don't want to use particular services offered by a company
with e.g. horde, I just grab the latest version, install it on my server and it works.
if the project dies - doesn't matter, it still runs on my server and I can export all my data (and re-import it into another software)
the mails are on the IMAP server I choose, and the other things are stored in my database
    makes sense, doesn't it?
