IMac menu bar probelem - it's very hard to describe

Could someone please take a look at this photo and give me a hint on what to search to find the solution to this problem?

So that multicolored stripe is at the top of your desktop (the menu bar)? Or is it further down (because there is a lot of dark/black space above it)?
If you are under warranty, I would call Apple or get to a Genius Bar. If you are not, make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar where diagnosis is free.

  • Can menu bar use variants instead of hard coding in GUI Status?

    Hi Experts,
I am trying to select data into a variant from one table. This variant will be used for text in Menu Bar of GUI Status. I used to hard coding in Menu Bar. Is it possible for variants instead of hard coding in Menu Bar?

  • Menu bar items disappear, and external hard disks not mounting

    Hi,
This problem started yesterday. I start up my Mac, and none of the menu bar items in the top-right of the screen show up. Then I noticed that none of my external hard disks had mounted.
Looking at the Activity Monitor, I saw that sustemuiserver was not running.
Reading around, I discovered that this usually follows a FrontRow hack (which I haven't installed). I tried deleting the ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file and logging out and back in again. Everything seems to work again, for a while. However, the same thing happened this morning.
Has anyone else experienced this, and anyone know a fix to stop it from happening?
    Thanks!
    Tom

I've been having the same problem for a while (I believe since 10.5.3). I have reinstalled OSX, installed OSX 10.5.6 combo hoping that it would fix it, but nothing yet. I have the problem only when I insert an expresscard into the slot and restart. It connects to a PCI expansion chassis. When I restart with the ExpressCard installed, all menu items dissappear and I can't eject volumes (hard drives) from the desktop. If I restart without the ExpressCard in, the menu bars seem to work properly. I tried with an older G4 running 10.4.11, with a CardBus card and the same chassis, and that worked fine... all menu bar items displayed and worked properly and I could eject disks.
I have also tried creating new users, but that didn't work either.

  • My imac menu bar keeps flashing

my mac os x menu bar keeps flashing. i cant even click on them cos it keeps appearing and dissapering. any help please

First you must figure if this is a system issue or user issue. IF you can, create a Test User. If the test user is affected Reset the NVRamm (Hold Command,Option, P, and R upon restart until you hear a second start up chime).
Repair disk in disk utility boot to The Mac osx install disk (hold C with the disk in upon restart. On the toolbar go to utilies and run disk repair on macHD). and repair permissions too
If that fails an Archive and install is an inconvient option
If its a  user specific it can be more complicated an Archive and Install may not. I would try pulling out the Com.apple.Example.plist files (They are found in (homeuser)/library/prefrences
i would try finder plist first then maybe even all of them if it comes down to it.

  • Menu Bar and Keyboard not working

    Hi,
My Ipad has encountered some very annyoing issues. Worked fine for 4/5 weeks since purchase and now this has started to happen.  I am unable to use Menu Bar at top of screen when Ipad is held in Portrait position. For example when in Safari, cannot input new email address, use back button, use X button. And its same with other applications - when in settings, the options on menu bar at top are not working - As if its Greyed out and not accessible.  When I flip Ipad into Landscape position, these options on Menu Bar are then working - very fustrating.
Also same issue affecting keyboard. When holding Ipad in landscape position some keys do not work and they do when Ipad flipped back into Portrait position.
Means i am constantly turning Ipad around in my hand endlessly trying to get it to function making it pointless to use. Only setting that I can see that may be affecting this is Lock rotation - but same issue with this selected or not.
Anyway any help appreciated as Im not very tech savvy and only have Ipad few weeks. I've downloaded no apps, only used it for browsing internet so far. I have taken some photos and videos and really would hate to lose those.
All comments appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention that Ipad also keeps telling me that I cannot get Mail when I click on Mail icon - That Connection to server failed?

  • No menu bar, Dashboard after 10.4.11 upgrade on G3 iMac

I'm not a Mac expert, so bear with me here. I installed the 10.4.11 upgrade on my wife's iMac DV G3 (i.e. the most important machine in the house). During the installation, I got a popup stating that my startup disk was nearly full and that I should (not must, but should) delete some files. I clicked through the popup and the completed the installation. After that the machine rebooted and I got to a blue background screen but no Dashboard or menu bar at the top of the screen.
I rebooted in safe mode (power on w/shift key) and got to a login window, logged in, and got to the same blue background screen.
Q - What are my other options here? I seem to have no access into the machine, though it seems to be booted and not dead.
    Please help.
    tcpasley

I still have the original problem of No top menu, No dashboard, No desktop Icons after login. I still see coreservicesd crashed in /var/logs/system.log.
    Here's what I've done:
Booted from Install DVD, repaired Disk and Permissions repeatedly - no problems here; no repairs done after the first pass through (and only permissions needed repair then).
From a bash terminal: checked /var/logs/system.log. Found the coreservicesd crash. Also see that lookupd exits abnormally.
As per an Apple Tiger support page (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464), followed the instructions for "You see an empty, blue screen" and renamed some plist files and directories. Got repeatable performance in that I could always log in but would only get a desktop background w/o menu/Dashboard/icons.
Booted to OS9 and copied the 10.4.11 COMBO package file to the Macintosh Hard Drive, rebooted with the Tiger install DVD, opened a bash terminal and installed the 10.4.11 COMBO package as per http://net3x.blogspot.com/2007/03/macos-x-1049-update-killed-my-mac.html. No problems encountered with the installation.
Unplugged the machine for ~10 min at some point here. This apparently reset the clock, which I set via the date command.
Rebooted in Safe Mode. Actually got Dashboard and the Time and Finder magnifying glass portion of the top menu (upper right corner) to appear. Clicked on the Finder in Dashboard and got the "infinite spinning beachball" hang. Rebooted in Safe Mode and then got the featureless desktop background again. I haven't checked logs of the one semi-successful startup yet.
So - installing the 10.4.11 COMBO package DID NOT fix the problem.
I also find that networking is not being configured. This could be due the the renamed preferences files and directories.
What should I try next, short of CraigsList for a new/old machine?
    Please help,
    tcpasley

  • Menu bar and hard drive icon don't appear at last stage of boot up

Machine froze trying to print a PDF document off a flash drive in Preview.  Had to power off the machine.  Upon restart, everything came back to life fine until the very end of the boot up process (chime fine, desktop background pictures appeared, main side tool bar program icons fine) when the top Menu title bar didn't appear nor the hard disk icon.  Spinning beach ball.  Never would finish the boot up process; seemed like it was still trying to finish the print job from before.
Unplugged the networked Laserjet printer, unplugged computer power, restarted.  Same result.  Everything is perfect for 98% of the boot process until the end.  Ran Disk Utility "verify disk" and it found a couple of items.  Repaired successfully.  Ran "verify permissions" and found quite a few wrong.  Repaired successfully.  Still same problem.
Any ideas?  I hate to reinstall the OS with it so close to being just fine.  Machine has been very solid and stable in the current configuration.  I do have a 2nd internal hard drive that has 10.3.9 on it that I can use in a pinch.
Power Mac G4 silver tower, Dual 1ghz, 2GB RAM, 10.4.11 with OS 9.2.2

While in Safe Mode, try this...
In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).
    Reboot & test.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Look at SecondBar gives you a second menubar
    <http://blog.boastr.net/?p=3>
    Also see DejaMenu
    Also see MenuEverywhere (Shareware)
And if you happen to have a Magic Trackpad, the SecondBar author has a very nice BetterTouchTool utility for creating Magic Trackpad gestures.  I can not live with out BetterTouchTool on my 27" iMac with 24" external monitor.

When is select Bookmarks from the Menu Bar, at the very bottom are a bunch of bookmarks. How can I move these in groups to a folder or folders?

The easiest way to move bookmarks around is in the Bookmarks Organizer, which at some point was renamed the Library. To open it, you can choose Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks or press Ctrl+Shift+b.
(Please note that the sort order of the Library dialog doesn't actually carry over to the menu. To sort the menu alphabetically, it's easiest to open the Bookmarks Sidebar, right-click the words Bookmarks Menu and choose Sort by Name.)

  • Intel iMac stuck at desktop screen, no menu bar, no finder, spinning ball

Hi, I've just run into a serious problem with my 24" Intel iMac not starting up properly. At first it was getting stuck on the gray screen, then I got it to the blue screen, and now finally I can get it as far as loading the desktop picture, the cursor comes up and is responsive to the mouse, but has now become the spinning beachball. There is no menu bar, and the finder will not load. It's been in this state for about ten minutes. What I did to get it to this state is:
    1. Disconnect all peripherals. I'm using an Apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse, too.
    2. Reset the PRAM.
    3. Reset the PMU.
    4. Used the installation disc to run Apple Hardware Test (the short version) successfully...no problems.
    5. Used the installation disc to run Disk First Aid. Corrected a minor problem with the file structure.
    6. Used the installation disc to run Disk First Aid. Repaired permissions.
    7. Performed a Safe Boot, and got to the log-in screen, did not log in, but restarted normally as suggested in one of the Apple support articles.
    8. Am now staring at my desktop picture without the menu bar or the Finder, but the spinning beachball is chugging along and is responsive to my mouse.
If it is of any help, I've noticed for several months that the computer would occasionally fail to wake from sleep, and I'd need to force a shut down by holding the power button for several seconds. Could this have been a precursor to the current problem?
At this point, I'm not certain which version of 10.5 I have, because I can't check. But I've installed all the Apple updates that have come through, so I must be at the current version of 10.5. I can't remember exactly how much RAM I have installed, either, but it might be 3 GB. I installed a second memory module at the time of purchase, which I bought from Crucial.com.
I'm having to write this on my ancient PowerBook G4, which is still performing admirably under OS X 10.4.11. Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can provide! : )

It appears to have been a short of some sort on my power supply...it blew a capacitor somehow, though I don't know how/when that happened. Computer is on a surge protector, and generally sleeps during day while I'm away, but no power outages or other electrical issues occurred while I was out that I'm aware of.
Anyway, I had a new power supply installed by an Apple certified technician...opted not to do it myself...and discovered that the HD is perfectly fine. No data loss. Phew! Just two weeks w/o my computer, and no way to recover backup files on Time Capsule in the meantime.
Thanks for all the help and advice!

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

  • How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr

How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr?  I have downloaded Google Earth and it wants me to drag it to the hard drive for install. I was able to display the icon but now I would like to put it on the menu bar. Is this possible? Or can I add it to the hardware section under system preferences?
I'm a new Apple user, coming out of the dark ages of a lifetime in the PC Windows world.
    Thanks

It's on your Desktop, is it not? You cannot put it on the menubar through OS X although you may find third-party utilities that will. If you want it on the Desktop:
Select Preferences from the Finder's Finder menu and check the desired boxes:
Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar to set what you want displayed in the Sidebar.
