IMac (Mid 2007) hangs at startup before the Apple logo comes up

I have a 20" 7,1 iMac (Mid 2007) with Lion installed on it that hangs at startup before the Apple logo even comes up. The machine is on a APC surge protector, but not on a UPS. We had a few power outages yesterday that were caused by high winds. When I came home the machine was stuck at a white screen. When I tried cycling the power it got stuck at the initial white screen. Since then I have tried the following, with no luck:
- booting in safe mode
- booting in verbose mode
- booting into single user mode
- booting into hardware test mode
- booting in recovery mode
- booting from the original DVDs
In all cases it just hangs at the initial white screen. About the only thing that has worked is reseting the PRAM and NVRAM. Which definitly reset the speaker volume and screen brightness, but did not get it to boot any further.
Oh, and I should note that I have unplugged all external devices and switch back to the orginal (usb) keyboard and mouse.
Any thoughts on what the issue might be? I have done a number of searches, but I did not find much info about machines hanging so early in the boot process.
Thanks in advance.

Good work so far, about the only thing left to try is...

    Problems installing OS
I have an iMac 21.5 (mid-2010) and I'm trying to install a new hard drive.  When I choose the installation disk the Apple logo comes up and it stops there.  Then the mouse and keyboard goes dead.  I'm trying to install 10.6.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Since you have a new hard drive, there is nothing on it, so you need to boot from an external source (and probably format the hard drive before installing an OS). Are you booting from the 10.6 install disk? Better yet - do you have a bootable backup clone or at least a Time Machine backup?

  • ? just before the apple logo at start up

Just had the hard drive replaced at the local Apple store (it had the click of death and took all of my wife's academic work with it to the grave). Now, at start-up, it displays the folder with a ? for an instant before the Apple logo appears. Is this cause for concern?

No. Simply go into your System Preferences and select 'Start-up Disc'. Then make sure that your hard drive is the one selected to startup from.

  • A "Briefcase" icon before the Apple Logo?!

    Hi
I had Windows XP installed on my MBP for a few months, then when I no longer needed it I uninstalled it using Bootcamp
My MBP is working fine, however since uninstalling Windows XP, when I switch the computer on, just a split second before the Apple Logo appears, what looks like a Briefcase?! appears in place of the Apple Logo, and then quickly dissapears to be replaced by the aforementioned Apple Logo. Any idea what this might be, it's not a forwarning of dire things to come is it?
    Thanks
    A.L.I

Open System Preferences and select the Startup Disk pref. Locate your startup volume in the icon list and select it. Click on the Restart button. This should solve the problem.

  • Macbook Pro BIOS requires at least 1 minute before the Apple logo appears and Chime sounds.

When I cold-boot my MacBook Pro, it takes a least 1 minute before I get the chime and Apple logo.
    Some background on the problem:
After purchase I almost immediately installed Windows 7 on BootCamp and had no problems.
Around 8 months ago I bought a SSD drive and CD-bay kit, put the original HD into the CD bay and the SSD in place of the original HD, installed OSX on the SSD and formatted the original OSX partition, this broke the Windows install.
I tried in vain for around 2 months to repair the Windows partition without having to reinstall it to no avail, so I swapped the positions of the drives.
Since then the Windows & OSX partitions work fine, however from a cold boot it takes upwards of 1 minute before the Apple logo appears and Chime sounds, after that it behaves as expected (maybe 20-30 seconds and I'm fully booted).
Performing a soft restart behaves as expected too (Chime/Logo appear almost immediately and boot time is lightening fast!).
When I close the lid, it exhibits a similar problem in that it takes about 1 minute before it has gone to sleep and I can't do anything to wake it until that time has past.
It's not the end of the world, but it is slightly annoying, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
My guess is some kind of EFI/BIOS problem, but I can't find any other examples of this problem and have no idea how I might fix.

When in OS X go into System Preferences and Select Startup Disk. Then select the OS X entry, even though you are in OS X, and reboot.
Some times the hardware gets confused as to which OS to boot and figuring it out can take some time. Once you select the OS X partition as the OS to boot to it should startup faster.
If not then you have some other problem that I am not familiar with.
You might also want to do a SMC reset, Google for the instructions found on the Apple KB site.

  • ? in Folder - Appears briefly before the apple logo appears

    hi there.
I'm not sure if this is a Macbook thing or an OS X thing. ....I'll try here in the MacBook forum first, & see how I get on.
This has just started in the past few days. Everytime I start my MacBook, I get the folder with a question mark appearing just for a second or two before the apple logo appears.
Now I know this means the mac can't find a system folder, so this normally indicates a problem with the hard drive.
As this is only appearing for a second or two, should I be particularly concerned about this?
The only thing that's changed is I've recently upgraded my hard drive. It's no longer got the 250 gb in my signature, it's now got a 320 gb Toshiba drive. This was installed after cloning my previous drive with carbon copy cloner. ....this new drive also checks out fine re' S.M.A.R.T status & has had its permissions repaired.
    Anybody got any suggestions?

Thanks Jonathan, ...i'll definitely bear that in mind.
So I booted from the install DVD. Repaired the disk, but this didn't find any errors.
I decided the best thing to do was re-install OS X, just archive & re-install. .....but this threw up another problem.
When I selected my internal drive as the location to install OS X on, I got an error message telling me that drive didn't have a GUID partition table (...think that's what it's called?)
I imagine that when I cloned my old 250 gb drive to my new 320 gb drive, I should have properly formatted the new drive first.
So the 320 drive in my macbook has been properly formatted, OS X has been re-installed, & I'm currently copying everything back across from the 250 gb drive, that I'd been using as a time machine back up drive.
Hopefully this should have everything sorted. If I still can't select the internal drive to start up from in preferences, then i'll zap the pram as Jonathan suggested.

    Try:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • MacBook Pro starts then the apple logo comes up and it looks like it want to continue then a white screen comes up and stays

I purchased a refurbished MacBook Pro  (MACBOOK PRO APPLE MD385LL/A)
I did go to newegg and purchase / install 16 GB of RAM
It worked fine for the first week or so, now   I shut down  and when I restart  - it starts  - then the apple logo comes up and it looks like it wants to continue   - then a white screen comes up and stays.
    This just started.
I got this fix from on line
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Macbook if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
It works most of the time   How do I fix this permanently?

Can you try putting in the old RAM to see if the problem persists?

  • When I power up my ipad air the apple logo comes up like it should then the lock screen only comes up for a second or less so I can't swipe it fast enough.

When I power up my iPad Air the Apple Logo comes up like it should then the lock screen only comes up for a second or less so I can't swipe it fast enough to get to the home page. The lock screen just disappears. I have to hit the sleep/wake or home button to bring the lock screen back up so I can swipe it. Have others found this situation with the iPad Air. I have an iPad 2 and it does not happen at all. The Apple store checked it out. One rep said to me this is unusual and had a tech check it out and they said this is normal. If the iPad is suppose to be user friendly, why this extra step to get to the lock screen? Are other owners of the iPad Air having the same problem? If so, what have you done to correct it?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

    Hello warhogs17,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone will not turn on past the Apple logo. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • I dropped my iphone 5 in the water, its dead and when I try to charge it the apple logo comes and goes, thats my only sign of life, I've done many after market repairs but what I want to know is if I should replace the ligntning port or the battery

I dropped my iphone 5 in the water, its dead and when I try to charge it the apple logo comes and goes, thats my only sign of life, I've done many after market repairs but what I want to know is if I should replace the ligntning port or the battery... or just buy a galaxy s5?

If you dropped it in water, and then plugged it in, you may very well have destroyed the battery and/or the logic board.  Charging/plugging in to a power source is very damaging to wet electronic devices.  There is not much you can do but replace the entire iPhone...and since you did repairs yourself Apple will not do an out-of-warranty replacement.
You can try replacing the battery, the lightning port is another issue, but I would not expect that iPhone to work again.

  • I tried to update my ipod 4th gen. but when I came to see how much charge the screen was red and it wasnt charged and i cant use my ipod. the screen turned blue also one time, and now the apple logo comes up and its bright then dim and it stays there help

I tried to update my iPod 4th generation while it was charging and when I came back to check on it the screen was red and it wouldnt go off, and my ipod wasnt charging like it was supposed to. I found out how to get the color of the screen off but my ipod always has the low battery thing and when I charge it sometimes the screen turns blue or the apple logo comes up bright and then it gets dim and stays there. My ipod wont turn on, and I really want it to work again. Help me please! Also, I noticed my ipod battery hasnt been lasting long as it should efore this happened.

when i try starting my IPod  it won't start, the Apple logo comes up for a few seconds, and then. it just shut off . I tried to charged it through an outlet, the IPod didn't eve charger so I tried to restore my setting in my computer, i tunes won't

But that requires the computer to see the ipod. I am having the same problem and I keep being told to restore it, but you have to either get the ipod to turn on or have the computer see it in order to so that. Right now I have a pretty useless 32GB ipod touch cos I cant get the thing to turn on! I can only get the apple logo for like maybe 20 seconds and it goes away. Ive charged it for days on a wall charger, on the computer usb charger, and on a speaker charger. Nothing works.
