  • Is it possible to turn off imac display while mirrored display plays video?

I've set up a new 21.5" imac for my parents use in their living room and have connected their 52" lcd tv to the imac as a mirrored display.
One issue that i can't find a solution to is to find a way to turn OFF the imac display when they're watching content on the lcd tv. If they want to watch a film from the imac out to the LCD TV, they want to dim the lights and watch it, but the imac display being on in the dark room is distracting.
Is their any way (3rd party software??) to turn off the imac display while still being able to have the mirrored display running?

You should actually NOT use mirroring, although it would work OK on the 21.5-inch iMac because the screen resolution is identical to 1080p HDTV.
In System Preferences Displays pane Arrangement tab, turn mirroring OFF. This makes the HDTV screen extend the iMac's Desktop. In the diagram on that pane, it shows how the two screen arranged. The edge where they touch is where you can move your mouse cursor from one screen to the other. You can move the two screen around in the diagram, to match how the iMac and HDTV are located in the real world.
In System Preferences Displays pane Display tab, there will be a window for each screen. The 21.5-inch iMac's screen should be set to 1920x1080. The HDTV's screen should be set to 1920x1080 also, if it is a "1080p" HDTV.
To watch video content on the HDTV, first show the video playing in a window. Drag the window to the HDTV screen so that it is completely on that screen. Give the full screen command (usually Command-F). The video will play in full screen mode on the HDTV screen. In most video playing applications, such as DVD Player, QuickTime Player, iTunes, etc., the other screen (the iMac's screen in this case) will go black. It's not OFF, but it will display black.
Note: Some video playing apps have a preference setting for which screen gets the full screen. When playing video content in a browser window (such as YouTube or Hulu), when you go to full screen mode by clicking the +full screen+ button, the other screen will not go black.
As far as I know, there is no way to turn off the iMac display, even with mirroring turned OFF.

  • Prevent Retina iMac defaulting to 'mirror displays'

Hello! I have a Retina iMac (Yosemite) connected by Thunderbolt>HDMI adapter and HDMI cable to a Samsung 32" TV. How can I stop the iMac defaulting on start-up to 'mirror displays' (forcing it to a low resolution) despite deselecting 'mirroring' in display preferences? I will never use mirror displays and only ever need an extended desktop. Many thanks in advance

I just thought I'd answer my own question here, in case it is of any help to anyone!
I realised my iMac is just within the three-month Apple Care telephone support period, so I rang them up, and they were terribly helpful. We went through a number of elimination processes, and eventually the "don't mirror displays" preference was finally remembered by deleting the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file.
However, this was not actually the cure - one of the the processes we did to eliminate certain things was to set up a test account in addition to my own account. After doing this, naturally we had to disable auto login.
So after the euphoria of fixing the problem by deleting the .plist file, I hung up and deleted the test account and re-enabled auto login. And the problem returned!
So the problem actually lies within enabling Auto Login....so for the time being, I will leave it disabled. If anyone has an answer as to why this may be, I'd be ever so grateful to hear from you, as my dream scenario would be to re-enable it!

  • Apple TV Mirror display issue

I am currently using a 3rd Gen Apple TV with a late 2013 iMac. I can connect to AirPlay display and it automatically connects to "extended display" and the TV screen goes black however I get no options to use as a secondary display. When I click "Mirror display" nothing happens. I have tested on a later Macbook Pro, iPad Mini and iPhone 5 and everything works fine. Both computers are up to date and using OS X Yosemite.

  • IMac mirroring on external monitor

I would like to connect my old iMac 20inch to an external monitor. This external monitor(probably 24 to 27inch)  will play as primary monitor.
What is the maximum resolution on external monitor if I mirroring my imac? My old iMac curent resolution is 1680x1050. Thanks

You are running into the fact that the converters from Geffen, Atlona, etc block the ability of your current GPU of driving the iMac's display directly, which is why you can only drive the iMac's display at 720i, which is 1480 x 720, half of the iMac's display's resolution.
Atlona makes a US$279.00 solution, a video scaler with its own GPU to drive the display at its native resolution. You would use this in conjunction with the DVI to mini DisplayPort converter. So overall, it is a $428.00 solution. You can obviously get another video card for less than that.
The issue is that currently your PC does not have a GPU that can produce a DisplayPort signal directly. Any one of the video cards to which you link should theoretically do the trick. Then all you would need is a DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable.

Perhaps you can explain your project to the developer and they can recommend the right card for your application, or guarantee that you can return the card for a full refund if it does not work.

    Hello Victoria,
It sounds like you are connecting your MacBook Pro with your television, but you are not getting additional options for your external display.
I found an article with steps to troubleshoot issues with displays.  This article is for internal and external displays, so you can skip any steps referring to the internal display.  I recommend reviewing the section titled "No video or no signal, image distortion, 'snow,' or flickering" in the following article:

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
    How do I exit TDM?
To leave TDM, press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that is in TDM. You can also exit TDM if you shutdown or sleep either computer or detach the cable.
Can I use a third-party keyboard or older Apple keyboard to enable TDM?
Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple may not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. You should use an aluminum wired or wireless Apple keyboard to toggle TDM on and

  • Help please. Extended display won't work on MBP and AOC 20" 1600 x 900  60HZ monitor. Mirror display does. I've a mini dvd to vga converter cable. Should this work?

Help please. Extended display won't work on MBP and AOC 20" 1600 x 900  60HZ monitor. Mirror display does. I've a mini dvd to vga converter cable. Should this work?

I have the same mini display port adapter and Belkin DVI-HDMI cable (but a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV) so just set this up on it to see if I could duplicate your problem, unfortunately for you (but good for me) I can't.
I connected the adapter+HDMI cable before switching the HDTV on and then powered up the MBP. It (the HDTV) came up with my background right away (it's set at Mirror not extended Desktop) and when I run System Preferences/Displays get the following. Sorry but all I can confirm is that adapter+cable combination should work ...
Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys?

  • Mirrored Display. How to sleep MBP display without closing LID to keep the machine vented?

I just got my hands on a 15" MBP and I currently have a third party Display that I have connected to my Display output port. Mirrored display, and tried the clamshell mode but machine got quite hot by running in it that way. I was wondering if there is any way to keep the lid open while the mirrored mode on the external Display still runs?
Also, if there are any third party software that does give me flexibility as to which display to sleep and such, and at least have control over the display output options, that would be a gem. Appreciate it if anyone has that info?
Thanks a lot for taking time to help! Happy holiday and a great year to come for all!
    Miles of smiles,
    Jimbo

    Captfred,
I've tried what the article suggests but it only seems to work if you want to wake the computer when it is sleeping or the screen saver is on.
What I am trying to find out is how to start the computer when it is turned off without having to open it. I would imagine that there would be some key combination on the keyboard or perhaps a way to program the on/off button on the side of the Apple external display to do that.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • IMAC mirroring is not working with my IMAC and Apple TV since last update

    Hi friends,
since last update I am facing problems with my IMAC and airplay via apple tv to my HD TV screen. It is not working. Only audio but not video. I believe it has something to do with IMAC mirroring, which is not possible to select only expanded desktop. Airply on my TV is working with my IPAD, so it should be a problem with my IMAC only.
Did someone of You make the same experience or know what to do?
    Thanx in advance

  • Using iMac as display.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I ultimately want to get a PS3 and use my iMac to display it. It runs HD video from eyetv and downloads fine.

    I use one of these

When I try to link my Macbook to my TV, I cannot find the "Arrangement" button that would lead me to "Mirror Display". Please help!

The Arrangement tab only appears in System Preferences Displays pane if a second display is recognized by the system (the OS).  So it seems like your MacBook is not seeing the TV as being connected.
Describe the video connection between MacBook and TV...  What type of video out port does your MacBook model have?  How is it converted to the type of port used on the TV?
