IMac modem mystery

I set up a 600MHz G3 iMac (10.3.9) for a client; the modem worked fine when I tested it, but now she says it sometimes can't connect -- about "1 time out of 15". When it doesn't connect, it will fail repeatedly ("5 or 6 times in a row") but then work okay later in the day. The ISP says there's no problem; and once when the iMac wouldn't connect she tried right then with her PC and it worked.
I've looked at the Internet Connect utility's Connection Log; where a successful connection is logged thus:
(date & time) : Version 2.0

Modem Reliable Link Established.
Modem Compression Established.
Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cu.modem
... and IP & DNS numbers are listed

Does anyone have any idea what this means? Is the modem going bad (I thought modems either worked or didn't work, not intermittent)? "LCP terminated by peer" sounds like something happening on the other end. Anyone know what SIGHUP means? I can replace the modem if necessary, but it's a pain so I'd like to learn what I can first.

Thanks for your response. As it turned out, I discovered I was able to duplicate the problem on my iBook at my house, which pretty well ruled out a cause in either the iMac or the phone line at the client's house. Consultation with the ISP determined that it was probably due to how I had the connection configured, i.e. using "[email protected]" rather than simply "username". For some reason, 90% of the time that would work, but 10% of the time it wouldn't. So I've corrected that, and we're hoping the problem won't recur. (The tech also suggested entering the DNS numbers, rather than allowing them to be retrieved automatically; he said "Macs require that," though I doubt this is true -- certainly not for EarthLink, which I use.)

  • The Great iMac FireWire Mystery

    I'm stumped on this one and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
    A couple of months ago I replaced my mother's mirror door G4 (2x1GHz) with a 20" 2.16GHz Intel iMac (the last of the all-white iMacs). Her G4 had an 80GB and a 60GB internal hard drives, with the 80GB being the boot drive and the 60GB being accessed exclusively by Retrospect to do incremental backups on a nightly basis and a recycle backup once a month. This system worked quite well for the past couple of years.
    Her iMac has a 250GB internal drive. I added a Newer Tech miniStack v2 200GB hard drive which I have connected via FireWire. Using the same Retrospect-based system, backups are performed regularly. However, there's a fly in the ointment. Occasionally and for reasons unknown the computer will unmount the FireWire drive all by itself. This happens regardless of whether the computer is idle or in use. Power cycling the drive will remount it and all is well afterwards -- until the next time. It seems to happen about once every 2-3 days. The drive can be connected for 2-3 days at a time without any problems, but then it just disappears. Poof.
    Things to remove from the list right off the bat...
    1. The miniStack drive is fine, having performed its duties on several other computers in the past and operating flawlessly in the same capacity on other computers (including a MacBook Pro and an aluminum iMac).
    2. OS X is set to sleep the drive when it's not in use. Since the incremental backup process takes less than five minutes a day to complete, having the drive spun up 24/7/365 makes little sense. The drive happily spins up when Retrospect does its thing (assuming the drive is still on the desktop at that time, of course) and the drive happily spins down shortly after Retrospect finishes (again, assuming...). A suggestion of "turn drive sleep off" is not acceptable for this reason, and for the fact that the other computers that the drive was attached to also had drive sleep enabled and didn't have this problem.
    3. The OS X installation (10.4.10) is very clean, having been installed when the iMac was installed. There are no "haxies" or anything weird like that installed. The only "modification" to the system is enabling the DEBUG menu in Safari. When I put the iMac into target disk mode and boot my wife's MacBook Pro from the iMac's hard drive, the miniStack drive does not show this problem. If the OS X installation was to blame then the MacBook Pro should also have lost the drive.
    4. I've also gone the other way, booting the iMac from the MacBook Pro's OS (10.4.8 and 10.4.10) in target disk mode. The problem remains on the iMac.
    5. The iMac itself has been checked out by Tekserve and the Apple Store, both in Manhattan, and has been pronounced 100% without error or problem. The iMac also passes the hardware test provided on the Apple CD and the TechTool Pro diagnostic. All other aspects of the computer perform flawlessly.
    6. The FireWire cable has been replaced, and both the old and new cables are perfectly functional with all other drives and computers tested.
    7. With one exception, other FireWire devices on the iMac seem to work flawlessly in all other regards. I've tried two camcorders, an iSight webcam, a friend's FireWire-to-MIDI box, a DVD burner, and a FireWire CF card adapter. All perform perfectly. The one exception is a 60GB portable FireWire hard drive. This drive performs exactly the same way on the iMac; that is; you can connect it and use it without a problem, but if you keep it connected for 2-3 days it too disappears from the desktop just like the miniStack drive. (I had a 2GB CF card connected to a FireWire CD card adapter, and it was mounted on the desktop as a formatted Mac volume. This card stayed on the desktop for five days without a problem, so the problem seems to be localized to actual hard drives and not just mass storage devices.)
    8. The iMac performs perfectly in target disk mode. I had it in TDM connected to the MacBook Pro for several days and it never disappeared.
    So, I'm at a loss. My current "fix" is to connect the drive to the iMac via USB and that seems to be working. That seems to indicate that it's a FireWire problem but I've never heard of one so specific to one particular category of hardware before (e.g., hard drives). Regardless, that doesn't solve this mystery. Yes, the drive works under USB....but why not FireWire like it should?

    I have been having similar problems with a Mybook FW HD disappearing and remounting at random intervls. I am in the process of replacing it with a Fantom 1000.( I have a 300G Fantom with an Oxford chipsest that has been completley reliable for > 2yrs attached via FW400).
    The Fantom 1000 mounted immediately with FW800, but as it was Fat32 formatted I decided to erase and reformat with MacOS extended using disk utility. I haven't been able to mount the final product, although it is recognized and described by the System. Disk utility can't verify or repair due to a formatting error.. I should mention that disk utility never gave any indication that it had finished the formating.. the blue barber pole was still spinning after 12 hrs
    How long should it take to format a 1T disk?
    Anyway now I am trying using a FW400 port and am about 1 hr into it...... next I will try USB and if that fails I will try to return to FAT 32... I should have quit while I was ahead
    My question .... is this a FW problem, a Fantom problem or a formatting (Disk utility probem)

  • 11 pm modem mysteriously dialing, connecting, exchanging data

    I've been trying to figure out why my PowerBook has been waking up at 11pm, dialing, making network connection and exchanging data with a remote server. I suspect that it's looking for a software update but have no assurance that it's not something more sinister. Is there an easy way to check for auto update settings?

    I have a Netzero account and it is using that number for dialing in (503-584-9935.) After that it's all Greek to me.
    I tried to track down the IP address (64.136.20.121) for a clue using the Network Utility software that is a part of OS X but that didn't help me. I checked System Preferences>Sharing and have everything turned off and the Firewall is on so don't understand how this could happen.
    Appreciate any ideas anyone has on how to stop this and clues as to what might be causing it to happen.

    Hi Ken,
    Welcome to the discussions area.
    My recommendation is to use a connection sniffer, such as Little Snitch, to determine which program is requesting the connection to the outside world.
    I suspect the log details you've shown would be the same or similar when you normally create a connection ie. they're related to your ISP.

  • Dialing from Filemaker via iMac modem socket. Can this be done?

    I want to setup my iMac to enable me to call via a headset on a landline.
    Has anyone done this?

    To the best of my knowledge you can only dial over the iMac's modem, you'd then need to pick up a handset to actually make the calls as the modem is not voice compatible.

    I experience pretty much the same problems as you. my specs: IMAc G5, 1.8 MHz, 512 MB, 1.5 years old (but not first generation).
    I had more memory, and airport extreme installed for all the time. since 2 weeks , things go crazy with exactly the same diagnostics as yours, which is a "kernel panic". This seems to be related with bad memory, incompatible third-party soft- or hardware. I would hate to pay so much money for a thing which is only 1.5 years old, thus i'm still looking whether i can locate the problem and solve it. It looks to me as if it is caused by some software settings, not failure of hardware. It occurs at startup or wake-up... but it is not reproducible.
    if you found a remedy, please tell me.

  • V.92 on internal iMac modem?

    Is there a way to update the internal modem on an G3 iMac? The model I'm talking about is the gray slot-loading version with a 600mhz that comes with a v90 modem installed internally. I cam across an update file called "z_applemodemupdater.smi" (or something like that) but the file doesn't open. Is it worth going to v.92 and does Apple or anyone else offer the necessary update files to do so?

    The only way to update the modem is using the updater you found.
    To make sure you are downloading the update for your specific computer, refer to the list of updates available for each computer here:

    If you download the wrong update you'll have trouble. So, make sure that the update you are getting is specifically listed for your model / revision.

    Double-check that you are getting the update for your system (as mentioned above). Not all systems have an updater available.
    Then, see if the documents about the disk images help.
    As for v.92, I don't really know of any immediate need for it. Most companies still work fine with v.90.
    The modem updaters from Apple just bring you up to the latest v.90 standard. Their documents don't say anything about enabling v.92 features. So, basically, you are just upgrading your modem from the early v.90 standard to the finalized standard (after all the standards disputes were settled).

  • IMac Startup Mysteriously Turns On Sony Stereo Receiver

    Yup. That's right. Every time I start up my new 24" iMac, my 10-year-old Sony home theater system switches on as well, right after the chime. There are no wires or any other kind of connection between the two. There are no peripherals attached. They face each other in the same room, with about 15' between them. I'm guessing that it's some kind of IR remote control thing, but it still doesn't make any sense to me.
    Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea what's going on here? It's driving me crazy!

    Have no idea really but try "pairing" your remote and the iMac.

  • IMAC - modems startup order?

    I've been having automatic connection issues when I turn on my MAC. The computer is plugged into a wall outlet. My DSL router (bridge mode) and my Airport Express are both plugged into a power strip. It seems that when I start the modems first and wait until there is a green light on the AP express and THEN start the MAC the wireless connection is automatic. However, when I start them both (the computer and modems) one right after the other, quickly, in any order, the AP Express is not recognized and/or it takes me a long time to connect manually.
    Does this make any sense?
    Can someone tell me how he/she connects their computer and modems to power?

    makes sense to me as well...
    if you have nothing dependent on a specific ip address, then you only have to really worry about your modem and router.
    _for me, my power up order is this (wait until each is happy):_
    Modem
    APE(n)
    APE(b/g)
    TC
    VoIP
    then any wired or wireless computer / device in any order being that the 'core' network is in place, for me i've assigned ip's for everything.

  • IMac USB mystery

    Hello forum,
    I've been using Macs for over 10 years now, so far never had a problem which couldn't be solved but now it seems I've reached a point where this is no longer the case.
    Have a new iMac (21.5", 3.1GHz, 1TB Fusion Drive) since a few days. Everything's working fine, apart from the USB ports. A few examples below:
    - iPad working perfectly fine (i.e. charging and being recognized in iTunes) when using an original Apple Lightning cable
    - iPad very quickly alternating between "plugged-in" and "plugged-out" mode constantly when using a non-Apple Lightning cable (tried no name ones as well as Belkin ones - same result). The same no name or Belkin cable however works fine when charging iPad using the (original Apple) wall plug
    - iPhone works perfectly fine with all three cables (no name / Belkin / Apple Lightning)
    - 2.5" USB 2.0 portable hard drive works perfectly fine
    - 3.5" external hard drive (in case, externally powered) works perfectly fine over FireWire800 via Thunderbolt adapter
    - the same 3.5" external hard drive does not work over USB 3.0 (external case has 2 FW800 and one USB 3.0 port). Whenever I plug it in using the USB 3.0 it appears in the Finder for a few seconds, then an error message pops up saying I should unmount the drive properly before ejecting. It also shows up in the disk utility within the first few seconds but then disappears. Have tried a few cables and all four USB ports and it's the same for all of them
    Have examined the external HD on FireWire in Disk Utility and everything is in order there
    Have searched the web quite extensively and many people seem to have problems with USB 3.0 drives when the Mac goes to sleep, but my problem pops up immediately after I plug the drive in. When I first tried it I thought the USB ports might be faulty but they work perfectly fine with the iPhone and the old USB 2.0 external HD
    Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance

  • Disable internal modem

    Got an iMac 333 with a defective internal modem. Am now using an external modem but needed to upgrade OS from 8.6 to 9.2. Upgrade went fine and the modem worked. My friend called me and now has the same problem...the OS wants to dial-out using the old modem. We've disabled the extenstion to the old modem but the problem still exists.
    I'm a pc tech but learning Mac stuff and would like to know how to disable the internal modem, that or pull the modem if it is in an expansion slot. And if by pulling the old modem will that force the OS to look at the external modem?
    BTW- the OS sees the external modem

  • Why is my iMac sounding loud

    My imac was mysteriously sounding loud like a fan running on high.  I shut the imac down and rebooted and it stopped.  Any ideas?

    Do a SMC reset, if it doesn't work the first time please do it again.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
    Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Internal fax modem not answering but sending ok

    My iMac G5 internal fax modem will send a fax with no problem (how do I change the number of attempts it makes to send a fax until it gets thru successfully?) BUT, it will not answer incoming calls even though I have set the Print & Fax System Preference to Answer After 2 Rings (I tried other numbers of rings with no success)?
    When I connect a telephone (in place of the modem) it will ring when a call comes in and it can be answered normally. I don't have a normal fax machine to test on this line.
    This phone line can be split (with a filter on one side) so an ADSL modem can simultaneously use the line. I removed the splitter/filter so the connection is direct from the phone company to my iMac modem with no other devices on this line, but all remains the same; outgoing fax is fine, incoming calls don't get answered by the modem.
    Can this be corrupt preferences, like if the Fax Prefs are stuck with the Receive Faxes on the Computer box unchecked? Can I delete the PrintAndFax.prefPane or some other file to get a fresh Pref?

    I hate to experiment on my own stuff when stuff is working, so I didn't see what would happen if I unchecked all of the following boxes, so I have to ask, you do have one or more of the Save to {folder}, Email to {email address}, or Print on printer {printer} checked, right?
    Have you (or to your knowledge, anyone else) ever modified your /usr/bin/fax file to take advantage of the distinctive ring feature offered by many telephone companies? I have mine configured to only answer on my phone line's distinctive ring because I share the phone line with my home voice service. If you have a line of text in that file that reads like:
    INIT="-iZ -i&FE0&D2S7=120 -i&C0-SDR=2" (or "SDR=3" or "SDR=4", etc.), that might explain why your modem isn't going off-hook, too.
    I don't know if there is, and where a boolean for Receive faxes on this computer is stored -- I don't see it in my /Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.FaxPrefs.plist.

  • Disable internal modem hardware?

    Does anyone know how to disable the internal modem on a G5 Dual Processor? 10.4.8.
    We use the fax modem to receive and send faxes but the fax software/hardware periodically crashes requiring a full restart of the server to be able to send/receive faxes again.
    Bought an Apple USB modem in the hope that we could reboot the modem by unplugging, but, the server only answers the fax when the line is plugged into the internal.
    Disabling the modem in System Preferences > Network does not seem to do it. Each time a fax is sent manually from the server itself, the server recreates the internal modem as a queue which can be found in the Printer Setup Utility. Shifting the phone cord from one modem to the other results in fax being answered only by the internal and not at all by the external.

  • Modem failure to disconnect

    I am operating in a dial up mode and connecting to AOL.
    About every 6th time I sign off, the iMac modem will not disconnect. Clicking on the Disconnect legend does nothing.
    Disconnecting the phone line does nothing.
    The "disconnecting" scroll across the top right of the screen continues and will not allow me to sign on again.
    The only solution I have found is to restart the computer, When I do that, every thing is back to normal.
    The problem, when it occurs, will last for hours if I miss the problem and leave the computer on.

  • Can MoCA Cable Adapters Be Used To Connect Ethernet to Apple TV?

    I don't want to run a new 50'-60' ethernet line throughout the house (through the basement), to connect an ethernet line from my 2013 iMac Modem to the Apple TV …. and was wondering if anyone has experience using the newer MoCA cable line adapters for their ethernet extensions?
    Below is the MoCA adapter I am considering using:

    After talking with others, I'm dropping the whole ActionTec MoCA interest ….
    … and going for a simple Ethernet switch device, and running inexpensive Cat6 RJ45 cable from the iMac/Modem location to the Apple TV, across the house. Too much trouble, time consuming, and potential headaches wiring in and justifying the cost of the ActionTec's MoCA adapters. No doubt would have hours of trouble getting the MoCA adapters up and running. Besides, also read some bad reviews on Amazon about ActionTec Tech Support, and ActionTec MoCA adapter reliability over time.
    The KeeBox SGE05 5-Port 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet Switch (below/at Amazon), should do the trick …. along with picking up about 40'-50' of inexpensive Cat6 RJ45 cable.  I'll just be running it along the same internet cable line TimeWarner put in to my iMac & Internet Modem.
