Imac motherboard repair

Another iMac owner whose logic board failed due to bad capacitors after 4 1/2 years. My question is whether those of you who have had theirs repaired (either under warranty or not) have found the problem resolved, or have you had a reoccurrence? I need as much information as possible before committing to getting mine repaired (or else looking for another replacement). Thanks!

I think they really do it case by case, and I just tried to make the case the best I could for why I felt I deserved some consideration.
I visited an Apple store where their answer was very matter of fact that the computer was past warranty and told me the cost for repair. They were very polite and professional, but it was obviously not their responsibility to go further.
I called Applecare1 (800) aplcare or (1 800 275-2273) and made the best argument I could. I said I had paid for the AppleCare protection plan for 3 years, that I have a variety of Apple products in the home, a .Mac subscription member since near it's inception. My primary argument was that it was somewhat a known issue (article HT2390) and my computer fell in the serial range of the affected computers. And although my computer failed some months after I let the AppleCare lapse, I felt the difference in whether or not your computer failed was really chance, if you used your computer less you were punished because it would fail outside the coverage, where if you were a heavy user your chance to have the problem correctly identified was better.
By the way, the first contact I made through the Applecare support was very polite and professional but again could not offer a resolution; I was transferred to the next level and here is where I think I just got lucky; I found a very sympathetic ear to my plight, and she said that my case would be reviewed further and she would get back to me. Eryn was good to her word and I got a call from her the next day with the good news that cost of parts would be covered and that was enough for me. People do make a difference! I'm really very grateful for that because I think I would have been forced to put the iMac in it's box in the back of the closet.
Good luck, I hope you also get some consideration ..............

  • I need to find someplace that I can get my HP G61-322NR motherboard repaired in Boise, Idaho

My old motherboard in my laptop overheated and melted (so very bad) So I bought another used motherboard THINKING it was fully working as was stated on the website from the place I bought it from. They will not refund my money on this board at all. They will not respond to emails. So I am stuck with a board that is dead and I need my laptop before I leave on the 6th of June. I took it in to find out what was dead about it. I had a place here locally in Nampa, Idaho test it. They stated that it had blown a fuse on the motherboard and to contact HP to see where I could take it to have this fuse replaced. They could take the good fuse out of my other motherboard to put in the supposely good one I have. Thing is no one here locally will not attempt to repair it. I know that they have a hp manufactoring place in Boise (HUGE PLACE MIND YOU). However I want to get this in this week to get it repair. I am already out a $140 for a blown fuse board. I cannot afford much more. I cannot even get close to the cost of a new board or new laptop. Can you send me or refure me to someplace here local so I can get this done asap? Please respond VIA EMAIL TO: [email protected] Thank you so much for your time.

I guess I would like somebody to show me the fuse on a laptop motherboard. There is no fuse like a fuse in a car that controls the dome light but I get the picture. There is some component no longer working. What is not clear is what component. That will determine who can fix it. HP does not have anybody here in the U.S. who can do component level motherboard repair. That is just not part of the service they do. That is kind of service that highly skilled independent techs can (maybe) do. I know techs here in Indianapolis who can repair visible components like a usb port or a power jack but I have never personally seen an actual chip repair. I know there are folks on ebay who claim to do it with larger chips on the motherboard like the video chip but they use very expensive equipment, and would charge close to the price you paid for the motherboard. If the board is truly defective why can't you return it? Check ebay for "laptop motherboard repair" and see if you can find somebody fairly nearby. I think the odds of finding such a place in Boise are very slim but you can likely find one in Silicon Valley or the Seattle area? I did a quick search and got no hits within 250 miles of Boise, however.

  • Upgrading slot load iMac motherboard with later model

I have a 450 MHZ iMac DV. I recently found a 500 MHZ iMac motherboard with the 16 MB video chip on eBay for $15 so I figured I might as well go for it. I know the CPU heat sink is in a different place. Does anyone have any other advice for the swap (I've swapped motherboards between 350 & 450 iMacs efore so I have some experience with it).

I've swapped quite a few. It will work fine as long as you replace the power button as well. You'll need one with the white LED instead of the green/amber one currently installed.

  • This is not right: time limit on iMac G5 Repair Program

iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302181
The program covers affected iMac G5 computers for up
to three years from the original date of purchase.
Apple sold iMacs G5 computers that were defective when they left the factory. Apple knows the cause of the defects. In some of the affected iMacs the defects manifested them earlier, in others later.
That Apple is using a time limit for the free repair is not right because the manifestation of the problem is usage dependant - those who used their iMac little (and the problem appears late) are being penalized. The correct way would have been to recall and repair all of the affected iMacs or put no time limit on the free repair.

    Hello All,
I agree as well. My iMac G5 would not power up on Saturday morning. I bought it in Feb. 2005. I had the logic board and power supply replaced in May 2006. My apple care ran out in Feb of this year. Still, I called Apple, thinking perhaps something could be done.
The tech was very, very nice, and talked with his supervisor three times to see if perhaps I could get some kind of discount on a new computer. No go. And he explained that Apple is no longer making the old logic boards, they have to be made special, etc. I do feel a little cheated, since they replaced the logic board with one that had the same problems (opened it up--bulging capacitors with the cross mark on them). Well, it lasted two years after that, but we are not hard on our computers, and now I wish I'd have been less cautious with it. Maybe it would have died two months sooner when I still had Applecare!
Nevertheless, I still went out and bought a new iMac 24 in. 2.8 with 4 GB ram and a new Airport Extreme Base Station (Apple products are still the best I've ever used). I'm going to wait awhile to get Apple Care--to extend my coverage time as long as possible, since even a couple months would have helped in my situation.
Good luck to all you G5 owners. And thanks to all the people in the G5 forums that have been so helpful in the past. And Back-up often--you'll be glad you did.

  • Battery exchange program : thanks for the iMac motherboard!

    Hi!
I had problems with my battery.
Its serial number made me able to use the battery exchange program.
Thanks to UPS, after lots of difficulties, I received my parcel. How big it was!
I understood fast why it was so big: it was a iMac G5 motherboard. I don't need it. I need a battery.
What I wonder is: who do I need to contact, and how? (I'm French).
    Thx in advance!
    iBook G4 12" 1.2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Apple just sent me a replacement battery, and I can keep the motherboard (lol)! Thx a lot, even if I spent over half an hour calling an expensive number...
Still in love with my iBook, Vishnu.

  • How do I re-install FCE4 after motherboard repair?

    Hi folks!
Hope you had a great Christmas! Just got my fantastic MacBook Pro back from the repair shop with a new motherboard, and I'm excited.
However, when I try to start up FCE4, it asks for the serial number. I punched in all the numbers I could find on the package, but none work. (FYI: I had the store technician install the program when I purchased the computer three years ago, so I've never actually installed the program myself)
Anyways, can anyone tell me how I'd go about re-installing, or where on the packaging I'd find the serial number (in my experience, serial numbers usually start with S/N, or something like that; all I'm seeing on the package is two numbers: one starts with MB... , and is right above the label "Final Cut Express 4 Retail"; and the other number starts with BP. Can anyone offer any advice? Is there a special place I'll find the serial number to my version of FCE4?
    Thanks so much!

  • HT1758 Where can i take my imac for repair in the Orange County Ca area?

I'm having problems with my iMac and would like to take it to a repair center. Is it best to always take it to an Apple store or can I take it to a smaller business and have it looked at?

Either an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) ...
Use google to find them in your area.

  • Ship in iMac for repair?

    Hi,
I've just come home from my third 2012 iMac display replacement.
This one has a horrible yellow tint/gradiet and very low brightness. Again.
(Are Apple using inferior replacement parts?)
Anyway, there are no AASPs near me and I've not got time to take another 2 hour journey to the store.
Is there any way to have Apple collect it from me?

Call Apple to arrange to have it shipped to them for repair. They will provide you with a shipping container that will be delivered to you. It will contain an RMA return label that is pre-paid.
Package up the machine only. Arrange for pick-up. Apple will repair it and return it to you, also pre-paid.

  • IMac G5 Repair Extension Program

Parents have a first-gen iMac G5 that just died outside of the arbitrary 3 year window (serial number included in repair extension program). Local certified Apple Repair Center refused to even look at the machine and were clueless about the Repair Extension Program. Machine exhibited signs of strangeness months before the 3 year mark but parents didn't report it because it was still usable, didn't have Apple Care and they were never informed of the repair program. Not to mention the machine was back-ordered so the date on the receipt is months before they actually received one.
My question is, has anyone heard any status on the support of machines outside the 3 year window ("Apple will re-evaluate based on repair numbers, etc....")? Anyone had any luck getting machines of that era repaired?
Seems funny to me that registered customers are not informed of recalls.

It's only called a "warranty extension" for legal reasons (i.e. to avoid lawsuits, not admitting manufacturing flaws, etc).
Already called Customer Relations twice and was told we were SOL (my words). The first time my parents called the rep tried to tell them they were going to be charged even for questions about the problem because they did not have Apple Care; when they were transfered to a tech he faked trying to fix the problem (machine not completely dead at that point) by telling them to run the permissions repair utility even though they spoke about the extension program by name -- said nothing of replacement parts, etc.

  • Replacement of Imac motherboard

My dad's computer stopped turning on. He took it to an apple store and was told he needed a new motherboard, which would cost about $1000 including labor. I would like to know if anyone has replaced a motherboard of an IMAC who could assist.
    Thank you...

    I agree a New 20" is only $1199

  • Motherboard repair

I needed a new fan because the old one was rattling and the computer was heating up. So I ordered two fans, L & R, and proceeded to follow the online guide to replacing the fans. Unplugging the fan was not well illustrated and consequently I broke the bracket off of the motherboard instead of disconnecting the connecter from the bracket. Apple, of course wants to replace the whole motherboard, but the company from which I bought the fans says the motherboard can be repaired. Does anyone have experience with repairing an issue such as this, or any thoughts or advice? This computer is a MBP late 2008, idetifier 5,1. But the specs match the early 2009 MBP and parts are listed as early 2008/late 2009.

Call Apple customer relations and give them all the details.

  • Just back from:iMac G5 Repair Extension Program. No start/black screen.

O.K. Now what's wrong? I just got the IMac G5 back today. Plugged it in with the key board and mouse attached only. It will not start up completely. The light comes on, the screen is black, then the fans speed up. Pram reset, safe mode do not work. Tried several times.
    Any help appreciated,

    Imac G5 1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That is so surprising! And wow, my heart goes out to you. That really *****! BUT, there may be a very good reason or at least one that Apple didnt catch intially. Yea, I would most certainly call AppleCare now, if you havent already.
Let us know what happened if you think of it. I'd be interested to see what happened. Maybe this might be time to ask for a replacement. I know for me and my first generation iMac G5 it was a long, long frustrating relationship. I swear I dont think any of the early ones are safe. It just seems like such a troubled, flawed model. I am glad now that they fixed the issues. My 2.1 iSight iMac G5 has worked flawlessly for the 5 months I have had it. ( Knock wood.)

  • IMac cannot repair disk in Disk Utility

My computer started slowing down when I initially installed Snow Leopard. Eventually it stopped starting up at all, leaving only the white screen of death. I tried without the perioherals and I reset the P-RAM and nothing changed.
The most success I had came when I booted using the Snow Leopard disk. I went to disk utility to repair the disk, but it says "Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." I would be willing to but I can't even get that far along to back anything up. Please help! I keep trying different things. Will I lose everything, including my software if I restore??
    Thanks!

    Stolen from MacWorld.
    8. Back up a drive
Looking for a free way to back up a drive? Well, you’ve already got one—Disk Utility’s Restore tab. It’s a somewhat crude tool, but it does work. Launch Disk Utility and choose the Restore tab. Next, select the volume you want to back up in the left column, and drag it to the Source text field. Select the volume that will hold the copy, and drag it to the Destination text field.
If you want to erase the contents of the destination volume before storing your backup files there, select the Erase Destination option. Otherwise, the newly stored data is simply added to the existing files. Click on Restore to make a copy, and the backup process is complete. If you need to use your backup files later, simply reverse the Source and Destination directions.
